In this engaging episode of the Friends for Life Podcast, Tony Stuart addresses a compelling question: Are you too old to be a Direct Support Professional (DSP)? Tony dismantles the common misconception that age disqualifies individuals from contributing effectively in the disability support field, especially within intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) communities. He passionately argues that older adults can bring invaluable experience and a rich array of skills to roles that don't necessarily demand physical labor, such as in Adult Day Services or programs emphasizing arts and culinary skills. Tony encourages listeners to rethink their capabilities and consider how their unique experiences and passions can make a significant impact in the lives of those with IDD. As the discussion unfolds, Tony highlights the increasing demand for support within the IDD community, noting rising autism and intellectual delay diagnoses. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing and utilizing one's skills to aid in fostering independence among individuals with IDD. Tony issues a challenge to listeners, urging those between the ages of 25 to 55 to engage more actively with their communities by volunteering a few days as a DSP. This involvement, he suggests, could range from hands-on assistance to strategic roles in hiring and training within local agencies, highlighting the diverse ways one can contribute. Wrapping up the episode, Tony extends a warm invitation to join the Friends for Life community, reinforcing that no one is ever too old to make a difference. He reminds listeners that Friends for Life Residential Care is actively hiring and always open to new members who are passionate about enhancing the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities. Whether you're looking to make a big or small impact, Tony encourages taking that step towards becoming part of a community that values every individual's contribution, proving that your ability is indeed stronger than any disability. Join Tony next time for more insightful discussions on the Friends for Life Podcast.

Home care is amazing! Older folks overwhelmingly fear loss of independence and institutionalization more than death. Home Care can save the day for folks when they lose their ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) independently. Caregivers help with hygiene, nutrition, safety, cleanliness and so much more, all while allowing a person to stay in their home and the surroundings that they cherish.Adult Day Care is also Amazing: Another fear that outweighs death is the loss of family or friends. Day programs combat social isolation, provide nutrition, activity, movement, friends and a reason to get out of bed in the morning. When my mom started with adult day services, she told me "...and now I'm even going to camp."The first proposed titles of this podcast were "We are not enemies!" and "We are not competition."Powerhouse guest Liz Barnes, Vice President of Risk Management and Adult Day Services for Easterseals in the national capital area (Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland) is a great proponent and advocate for all home and community based services. She has a wealth of knowledge and also a great energy and passion, and I especially loved two things about my interview with her:She answers everything from the perspective of the participantFor Liz, "taking care of people" isn't enough, she wants them to live their best lives.Coincidentally Liz is the Chair of the upcoming NADSA conference and comes bearing a Discount Code (Ankota20)It's not a coincidence that the timing of Liz's episode is just about one month before the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) conference. It will be held from September 18th - 20th in the supercool Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta (Buckhead Marriott). When we recorded the episode, she mentioned that it was one day before the "early bird discount" was coming to an end. I had to share that sadly the episode wouldn't be reaching you until today, but Liz took care of you and arranged for the discount code Ankota20 that will get you 20% off conference admission. You can register for the conference here. Please enjoy what Liz has to share.Liz also graciously shared that she loves helping Home and Community Based Service (HCBS) entrepreneurs and that you can reach her via email at ebarnes@eseal.org.Home Care Heroes and Day Service Stars is produced and sponsored by Ankota - If you provide services that enable older or disabled people to continue living at home , Ankota can provide you the software to successfully run your agency. When Bill Zagorski took over his family's elder care services agency, they were mostly doing non-medical home care. Now they're mostly providing Adult Day health Services and their revenue per caregiver has more than doubled. As a research PHD, the leader of 3 adult day health centers, chairman of the Tennessee state association and board chairman on the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA), Bill is perhaps the most qualified person in the country to talk about this, and the episode is literally a master-class for anyone interested in adult day services. This slightly extra long episode covers the following:How Adult Day Services is growing and gaining prominenceOvercoming Fears and Challenges to adding Adult Day Services (like real estate, meals and transportation)Great synergies between home care and ADSHow to Learn MoreOne great way to learn more will be to attend the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) conference from September 18th - 20th in Atlanta. Meet Susan Lowe Dedicating my career to senior care, I did some research on opening an Adult Day Care Center and learned that most rural communities in Indiana did not have this service and seniors were potentially doing without needed assistance. After achieving my goal to become a licensed administrator and run an assisted living community, I still had a strong desire to serve my senior neighbors in my community. With over 30 years working in corporate-based senior care, I stepped away and opened my own company, A Senior Retreat, providing adult day services to decrease senior isolation, and give seniors a purpose again through socialization, peer engagement, and fun, yet therapeutic activities. While the initial focus was on the clients' experiences, our program is ultimately for the family caregivers. Our goal is to be their trusted care partner for their loved ones and their resource through their caregiving journey! After putting together a business plan, my investor helped me with the initial start-up costs. The name came from my desire to create a fun, warm, welcoming environment for seniors whom we call “our Friends” to “retreat” while their family caregiver was at work or needed time away. Thus, A Senior Retreat, Adult Day Services came to mind. In designing our logo, I knew it needed to have butterflies to symbolize seniors when they participate in peer activities and find purpose and happiness rather than isolation at home in front of a television. It's AMAZING! They do spread their wings and fly like butterflies! We opened our first center in Martinsville, Indiana in June 2019 serving Morgan County. It was a vacant church and would serve 25-30 clients per day. In March 2022, we opened our second location in Franklin, Indiana to serve Johnson County. It is a 1951 house and feels like a “home away from home.” Our goal is to open several centers in rural counties of south-central Indiana in the next several years. Meet Roy Afflerbach, a huge advocate for Adult Day Services. Roy is the Public Policy Advisor for NADSA and formerly in the legislature in the state of Pennsylvania. Roy has always had an interest in politics. He started his career early when he was in high school, helping campaign for John F. Kennedy. He later continued his campaigning efforts for JFK's younger brother Bobby Kennedy. This is when Roy says he realized he could make a positive difference in people's lives through government. Roy learned about the key attributes of being a CAREpreneur through his work in politics - willpower, dedication, and willfulness. After serving over a decade in the Senate and House of Representatives (plus a short stent as mayor!) Roy opened his own consulting firm. Roy's consulting firm is a public policy advocacy organization that focuses on serving non-profit organizations. After some years and through the power of networking Roy found NADSA. After his own personal experiences with dementia care Roy knew this organization could benefit from his help. Flash forward a few years and Roy has been able to help NADSA make tremendous strides in gaining government legislation and assistance for adult daycare services across the nation. Roy continues to show the United States what it means to be a CAREpreneur and continues to advocate for the senior care industry for many years to come. She is drawn to helping others and is passionate about caring for adults and supporting family caregivers through her current position at the adult day services at Catholic Charities. She provides the following insights on this important work and this option for caregivers and families:Adult day programs cost much less than other alternatives.Day services are an option for a loved one to do something during the day so the caregiver can work or just have respite time.Adding the option of day services builds the caregiving team with trained staff who can provide another set of eyes to notice health changes. The caregiver/loved one relationship is improved with time apart.Since the loved one is active during the day, he/she will be more tired and potentially sleep better allowing everyone to get better rest.Activities offered:memory exercises and triviaphysical exercise or range of motion (chair yoga)arts and craftsboard gamesbingosocializingouting to shop, eat or visit children in a daycareFind a program:In Kansas – Dial 2 – 1 – 1Other – Google search adult daycare with your zip code

This is the Albuquerque Business Podcast with your host Jason Rigby. Each week we interview leading local business leaders to inspire the vision and the spirit that is in every entrepreneur. We discuss strengths, weakness, strategies, systems and the problems we can all solve together to fulfill a shared vision of a new future for Albuquerque. Special Guests Nick Pavlakos and Roger Peery of Albuquerque Distilling its on 5001 Central Ave NE Nick and Roger met when they were 13 years old in Mr. Corona’s math class at Jefferson Middle School. This was such a long time ago they actually called it Junior High School in those days. Their friendship strengthened during the years they attended Highland High School. After graduation, Nick attended commercial art school in Denver, then returned home to graduate from UNM with a degree in business. Roger stayed in Albuquerque, and he ultimately finished college, earning degrees in both Geology and Water Resources from UNM. During those college years, Nick, Roger, and a buddy named Fritz, would take turns hosting the Sunday night airing of Star Trek (reruns of the original series), where they began to think about the future and businesses they could start together. In reality, none of them hosted the Trek watching, but rather either Nick or Fritz’s mom, or Roger’s grandma (Big Mom), would enjoy having the boys over, and they strongly impressed upon the young men the idea that when it’s your turn to host, you need to treat people “extra special”. After college, setting aside the mantra of “Live long and prosper”, Nick and Roger married, starting families, having kids, and working in their chosen fields. Many moons later…or galaxies as the case may be, Roger and Nick again revisited the idea of “businesses they could start together”, but this time looking to the past. They began researching and learning about the art of “old-fashioned” distilling and the idea of “hand crafting” quality liquor for people to enjoy. Years later, and after numerous hurdles with partnerships, permitting, and buildout, the two brought together their love of “hand crafted” spirits, and the ideals of their past hostesses…to treat people “extra special” at your place, and opened Albuquerque Distilling in late August 2019. With his business chops, Nick runs the front of the house. With his science background, Roger is in charge of spirits manufacturing. Nick, the Executive Director at Share Your Care, Inc., a local Adult Day Services provider, and Roger, the CEO and a Principal Hydrogeologist at John Shomaker & Associates, a local consulting firm, plan on keeping their day jobs as they manage the distillery. They will rely on their knowledgeable staff to assure patrons of a quality experience every day. Eventually, Nick and Roger’s plan is to retire from their careers and just make high quality hooch all day. please go their website here Please go to www.abqpodcast.com where you can get show notes, resources, and links to everything we talked about today to help you navigate your journey as an entrepreneur and business owner in ABQ. All three of these ladies have very personal stories of why they are so passionate about making sure these services are available and affordable for the people that need them. This is a really powerful episode and is a great example of people thinking on a bigger picture level.
