The Tennessee Association of Agriculture Education Convention was recently held in Murfreesboro. Callie Robinson explains how this conference helps unite ag teachers across the state, and helps them prepare for the upcoming school year.
Conflict often shows up in relationships. Especially for those who have been through some form of childhood trauma or been at boarding school. We weren't taught how to resolve conflict in a heart-centred way. Instead we learned to avoid conflict at all costs. For many it was seen as dangerous. But there is a positive and life affirming way to resolve difficulties in relationships with others. And today's guest, Kimberly Best, who is an expert in this field leads us through the key principles of conflict management.A really fascinating conversation.---Kimberly Best is a civil mediator and is currently serving her second term on the board of the Tennessee Association of Professional Mediators as Chair/President. She also have over 4 decades as a licensed registered nurse and an MA from the Institute of Conflict Management, Lipscomb University.Areas to talk about:I would love for you to share some of your journey. How did you get into the work you now do?Men and interpersonal conflict. Why do men keep so much stored up inside themselves? What are some of the of rules and expectations that we put on men? What do we need to do instead of instilling rules and expectations? How important is it to be heard without judgement and validated, so much locked emotion comes out. It is sacred to share those moments. Can you please share some tips on conflict management, the emotional experience and/or why we do conflict like we do?Can you please talk about how conflict is normal. It's a sign of a problem to solve and just because people don't agree with us doesn't mean they're against us - it means they're different from us. I talk about the cost of right/wrong, win/lose; the stories we tell ourselves about the other person; the uselessness of blame. One of the most common for men is trying to mitigate for someone else's feelings - a commitment to “not upset.”I talk about being honest about what goes on with us and letting the other person feel however they need to. Conflict resolution is about the “what next?” I also really like to talk about using mediation as a tool for conflict resolution - at work and with interpersonal relationships. #conflictmanagement #conflictresolution #boardingschooltrauma #complexptsdTo find out more about her please visit: https://www.bestconflictsolutions.com/mediation-practice--- Piers is an author and a men's transformational coach and therapist who works mainly with trauma, boarding school issues, addictions and relationship problems. In this episode, we interview Dr. April Ebbinger, a Nationally Certified School Psychologist who is the Director of Psychological and Behavioral Services for the Tennessee Department of Education. In this episode, we discussed recruitment and retention of mental health providers in rural Tennessee. One of the challenges smaller and remote school districts experience is that many healthcare providers are not attracted to these regions. To address these challenges, Dr Ebbinger is the principal investigator on a federal grant called Project RAISE. Many students have mental health challenges by age 14, and given several new challenges, such as COVID-19, students have new challenges. Her research and advocacy is to address these concerns to provide resources and networking through the grant. As professionals sign on, they are expected to stay and provide support and services within mental health. 44% of schools had no school psychologist. In other words, many students did not have access to student mental health services. The grant was designed to help address these gaps. Further, we discussed how contract agencies impact these services, including the funding approaches and how those resources are used. Dr. Ebbinger would like to see more mental health providers stay in these communities. We discussed how these resources can positively impact student learning and communities. Dr. April Ebbinger, a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, is the Director of Psychological and Behavioral Services for the Tennessee Department of Education. Additionally, she is the primary investigator on the federal grant Project RAISE to provide mental health support in rural school districts. Dr. Ebbinger has experience as a classroom teacher, school psychologist, district administrator, and higher education faculty. She has authored multiple journal articles and presented them at state and national conferences. Dr. Ebbinger serves on the Board of the Tennessee Association of School Psychologists Dyslexia Advisory Council and was the 2020 Tennessee School Psychologist of the Year.
Are you challenged by conflict? Do you have what it takes to be a successful mediator? If you feel like you are constantly navigating a maze of disagreements, misunderstandings, and hard feelings, know that you are not alone. Conflict is a significant part of human interaction, and it's particularly present in our professional lives. After all, we spend more than a third of our lives in the workplace, a space that brings together different personalities, perspectives, and values. When conflicts arise, as they inevitably do, they can be buried, mishandled or left unresolved, marring our experience and performance. In this episode, we delve into an in-depth exploration of the nature of conflict and its role in both our professional and personal lives. We attempt to unpack the complexities and dimensions of conflict, looking at its root causes, its evolution, and its potential to catalyze change and growth. Rather than viewing conflict as an undesirable aspect of our lives that needs to be eradicated, we aim to understand it as an integral part of human relationships that, when handled properly, can lead to innovation, empathy, and collaboration. With Kimberly's expert guidance, this episode will equip you with a fresh perspective and effective tools to transform how you perceive and handle conflict in your personal and professional life.THE FINER DETAILS OF THIS SHOWWhat is involved in mediation? In this episode we're talking to one of our favourite gifted educators and differentiation coach, Stephanie Higgs, about how we can all grow our creativity muscle, especially in our gifted kids. Memorable quote… “ “When we broaden that definition of what creativity even looks like, I think a lot more of us fit under that umbrella than we would initially think. And then even those of us who don't feel like it comes as naturally - that's one of the things I'm here to share today, is how we can grow and refine that area of talent.” - Stephanie Higgs Bio… Stephanie Higgs is a passionate, energetic, and engaging educator whose colleagues describe as radiating contagious joy. She has devoted her entire professional life to education, teaching in two of Tennessee's three grand divisions. Stephanie earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she then taught for six years at a museum magnet school and helped students achieve up to three years' growth in reading in a single year. After relocating to Middle Tennessee, Stephanie became a fourth-grade teacher, which had been her dream since she was a fourth grader herself! In 2019, Stephanie became a gifted educator and differentiation coach, where the staff quickly named her their Teacher of the Year before being named a region-level semi-finalist for Tennessee Teacher of the Year. Soon after, Stephanie was honoured with the TAG (Tennessee Association for the Gifted) Horizon Award, which is given to a gifted educator demonstrating promise and leadership in the field. Later, Stephanie was named the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) Teacher of the Year. Stephanie recently graduated with an additional graduate degree from Tennessee State University in Instructional Leadership and now serves on the executive board as secretary for the Tennessee Association for the Gifted. - - - - More… Enjoyed the podcast? Today we finish our conversation with gifted educator and differentiation coach Stephanie Higgs, in part 2 of episode 2, in the Parents Guide to Gifted Kids' First Year of School Series. We talk about… where is the best place to send my gifted child to school and what kinds of qualifications educators might have, when is the best time to start school for gifted kids? What are the misconceptions about gifted learners? Memorable quote… “ ”A lot of our listeners are going to be parents, but I'm coming from the educational side, so I love partnering and saying we are a team. First and foremost, we are a team. You as the parent are your child's biggest advocate and you know them best. I have more experience on the education side and I have some background and some expertise and years of experience there. But you know your child the best. But the best part is we're both huge strong advocates for your kids. So we are a team. And so I think that kind of frees up some of that, ‘am I overstepping?' ‘Am I saying too much?' But you do know your kid best and you've had… four or five or six years of every minute, every day with this kiddo and a teacher is new to that picture. And so we do have to partner, we have to link... we really have to work together.” - Stephanie Higgs Bio… Stephanie Higgs is a passionate, energetic, and engaging educator whose colleagues describe as radiating contagious joy. In episode 2 of Parents Guide to Gifted Kids' First Year of School Series, we're talking to gifted educator and differentiation coach from Nashville, Tennessee, Stephanie Higgs. We talk about… where is the best place to send my gifted child to school and what kinds of qualifications educators might have, when is the best time to start school for gifted kids? What are the misconceptions about gifted learners? Memorable quote… “ ”One of the norms that we've established in my class is to lean into struggle. And again, if we wait until these kids are older to identify them or to serve them, it's really uncomfortable for them to lean into struggle because they have been set on cruise control for all this time in class. And so, it's really nice and powerful and we can start that at a young age because not only can we challenge them academically, but we can really pair that with some social-emotional support for how to handle challenges, how to lean into struggle, how to develop that stamina and that perseverance what that says about us as learners. Because I think sometimes it becomes almost an affront on who we are as a person when so much of our identity is in our intellect and in schooling, and all of a sudden it's challenging. What does that say about me if I can't do this? What if someone finds out that I don't know how to solve this problem? If we normalise that from the very beginning, we can teach those in tandem all the way.” - Stephanie Higgs Bio… Stephanie Higgs is a passionate, energetic, and engaging educator whose colleagues describe as radiating contagious joy. Doing Divorce Different A Podcast Guide to Doing Divorce Differently
Today I am joined by Kim Best, a nurse turned divorce mediator in Tennessee. Kim walks us through how she got into mediation and what opportunities she sees through mediation. She focuses on the opportunity and the positive ways to handle conflict and divorce vs. feeling regret years later. Kim talks with us about how our difficult circumstances impact our legacy and some of the great examples she has gotten to be a part of with mediation. This episode is full of juicy nuggets and great takeaways, so make sure to tune in! In this episode: [3:07] How did Kim get to where she is today? [10:04] What are the benefits of mediation? [13:56] What does Kim see as uses for mediation? [15:52] How do these moments create our legacy? [17:58] Kim gives some examples of good divorces she has witnessed. Key Takeaways: Mediation can be the difference between hope and regret. You can choose to look back and be proud of how you handled the divorce, or you can look back and regret how things happened. Mediation isn't just for divorce. Mediation can be used for family issues, such as for elderly parents or other things going on where you need a mediator in the room. You can't control the outcome of what the other person does, but you can control who you're going to be during the process, and nobody can take that choice away from you. Quotes: “We are all never so narcissistic as when we're in pain. Because when we're in pain, it's all about us, and it's all about protecting us, even when we don't know we need protected. Biologically our brains and bodies don't know the difference between an insult and someone holding a gun to our head; both of those actions feel like life-threatening.” - Kim Best “Good people have terrible moments because we're people. We're more than our worst moment.” - Kim Best Guest Bio: Kimberly Best RN, MA is a TN Rule 31 listed Civil mediator and a TN Rule 31 trained Family Mediator, owner of Best Conflict Solutions (http://www.bestconflictsolutions.com ) focusing on Collaborative Problem Solving in Healthcare, Small Business Mediation and Conflict Management, Organizational Conflict, Elder Mediation, Family and Relationship Mediation, Dialogue Facilitation, and Conflict Coaching. This week I'm talking with Pam Lewis of PLA Media in Nashville. PLA is a Public Relations company that gets their clients in front of audiences and consumers through public appearances on tv and in print. Pam has an amazing history of being one of the people who launched MTV in the early 80s and also helped launch the careers of Garth Brooks and Tricia Yearwood. We are discussing the abilities you need to have to work for a PR firm as well as what it takes to start your own PR company. Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. In this episode we discuss: *A publicist (Public Relations) is the glue that holds it all together. *Helping launch MTV. *A publicist's job is to listen to the artist, hear your dreams and take them to the next level and make you a household name. *Publicists do press releases, promote concerts, booking events, finding endorsements, etc. *Publicists have to go through more levels of bureaucracy with major label artists. *Helping launch Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood's careers. *Starting an independent PR company called PLA Media. *A good publicist helps connect the dots. *Looking for unique opportunities for clients, not the obvious ones. *Be Tenacious. *First thing to ask a publication is if they're on deadline. If they are don't bother them. *Find common ground with whoever is on the phone with you. *Our job is to create a buzz. *Rates to hire PLA Media start at $2000-2500 a month and go up from there. *It's best to do at least 3 months with PR to do as much as possible. *What it takes to start your own PR company. *Can you provide a valuable service to clients? *You have to have boundaries. *Learn how to work a room. *Be a good listener. *Learn how to talk on the phone. *www.plamedia.com BIO: Pamela Lewis, a native of upstate New York, is an entrepreneur, preservationist, philanthropist and author. A graduate of Wells College with a B.A. in Economics/Marketing and a minor in French and Communications. Lewis spent a year in Paris studying at COUP (Center of Overseas Undergraduate Program) affiliated with The Sorbonne University. In New York City, she did additional graduate course work at Fordham University, The New York School for Social Research, The Publicity Club of New York and Scarritt Bennett. Lewis is also a graduate of University of Tennessee's Institute of Public Service Local Government Leadership Program (third level), of the Belmont University College of Business Administration's Scarlett Leadership Institute Mini Executive MBA program, of Leadership Music, of the Citizen's Police Academy and of the Leadership Middle Tennessee 2020 program. From 1980 to 1984, Lewis was part of the original publicity/marketing team of WASEC (Warner Amex Satellite Entertainment Company), a joint venture of Warner Communications and American Express, that launched MTV to the world. She also worked with MTV's sister cable channels Nickelodeon, The Movie Channel, and the Arts & Entertainment Network (A&E). Lewis was relocated to Nashville from New York City to accept the position of National Media Director at RCA Records helping to shape the careers of top country stars such as Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, The Judds, and Alabama. In 1985, Lewis opened her own PR firm, Pam Lewis and Associates (which later became PLA Media). In 1987, she formed award-winning Doyle/Lewis Management with partner Bob Doyle. The first client Lewis agreed to represent was an unknown Oklahoma crooner named Garth Brooks, who she worked with until 1994. Lewis also managed Trisha Yearwood‘s early career, landing her a record deal at MCA Records. Under Lewis' guidance, Yearwood released her debut self-titled album in 1991, becoming the first female country musician to sell one million records off her first single “She's In Love With The Boy.” The album went on to be certified double platinum, and Yearwood went on to win the Academy of Country Music award for Top Female Vocalist later that year. The two enjoyed a successful partnership which broke new ground in music winning all of the following: Performance Magazine's “Country Music Managers of the Year” two consecutive years '92 and '93, Pollstar Award “Personal Manager of the Year '92, Country Music Association's “Artist Manager of the Year”, SRO Award '01 (The first female executive to win this award), Nashville Business Journal's 40 Under 40 listing in '95 & '96, Who's Who in Executives, International Society of Poets Distinguished Member, Franklin Police Department Order of Excellence '15 & Tennessee Association of Museums Award in recognition of superlative achievement for publications PR kit. Eventually, Doyle and Lewis parted ways, and Pam turned her focus solely to PLA Media. In 2003, Lewis made her first foray into the world of politics running for office of alderman-at-large in Franklin, Tennessee. She won a four-year term, and was the only female on the board for two years. She also served as Vice Mayor for one year, and was elected to the Franklin Planning Commission and Historic Zoning Commission. In 2016, she was voted as a one of the top Female Entrepreneur by Your Williamson Magazine, and was invited to be part of the 2017-2018 class of Leadership Franklin. Lewis has served on or chaired multiple committees, including: The Tennessee State Museum, Tennessee First Lady Andrea Conte's You Have The Power, BRIDGES Domestic Violence Center, Sister Cities of Franklin, Battlefield Commission, mayor-appointed Franklin Housing Commission, Nashville Historic Commission, Historic Cemetery Commission, ARC Board and the Tennessee Preservation Trust. Since its inception, the Pam Lewis Foundation has given away a million dollars to numerous charities. She has been recognized for her business success/entrepreneurship, community outreach and preservation efforts by the Metro Nashville Historic Commission, Franklin Tennessee Heritage Foundation, African American Heritage Foundation, Tennessee State Museum and Tennessee Preservation Trust. In 2017, she produced a documentary of African American remembrances and contributions and was honored to give the commencement address at her alma mater Wells College, Aurora, New York in May 2017. In this episode, Ben speaks with trial lawyer and trial consultant Phillip Miller about how he helps trial lawyers deconstruct and then build a winning case for trial. Phillip starts by identifying landmines that will cause you to lose the case. Each landmine must be made irrelevant, immaterial, or otherwise overcome so that it does not sink the case. Phillip then talks about questions that every juror needs answered: why is the case important? How will the verdict affect meaningful change apart from money? Who is the villain (wrongdoer) in the case? What is the “real evidence”—i.e., the evidence that is not manufactured by one side of the other? Has this happened before? Phillip talks about his strategy for voir dire, which involves using a series of clear PowerPoint slides to frame critical issues that identify good and bad jurors or prime jurors on important issues in the case. About Phillip MillerTennessee Serious Injury Attorney "Making the world a little better and a little more fair for everyone." Phillip Miller is a nationally recognized attorney who specializes in representing people and families who have experienced serious, catastrophic injuries and death. He is certified as both a civil trial specialist and a pre-trial specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Mr. Miller has been recognized as one of the “Best of the Bar” by the Nashville Business Journal, as a "Super Lawyer," is "AV" rated, and his firm has been designated as one of the pre-eminent law firms in the United States. Mr. Miller is the past president of the Tennessee Association for Justice. Mr. Miller is a frequently sought lecturer on legal issues and has spoken at the National Judicial College, Harvard Law School, the University of North Carolina, Sanford Law School, The William Mitchell School of Law, the Nashville School of Law, the University of South Texas, and Duke Law School. As part of his practice, Mr. Miller is frequently hired by other firms to help them prepare their biggest, most significant cases. Firms in Michigan, Alabama, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas, Oregon, Kansas, California, New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Missouri have used Mr. Miller to help them recover tens of millions of dollars for their injured clients. Phillip's passions include education, the environment, dogs, and what he would describe as "making the world a little better and a little more fair for everyone." In addition to being a founding sponsor of School Aid, International, and sponsoring a Head Start class for more than 18 years, Phillip has also volunteered for Junior Achievement, bringing a businessman's perspective to middle school students. He is a lifetime member of the Sierra Club and belongs to the Tennessee Environmental Council, Tennessee Greenways, Nashville Greenways, and the World Wildlife Organization. Phillip sponsors "Rover," a free neutering/spaying program though the ASPCA, and visits them whenever they are nearby providing services to needy pet owners in the area.

Clean and abundant water is provided to communities across the United States by skilled and trained environmental professionals. Yet the water workforce is facing an impending retirement crisis, with an expected 30 to 50 percent of the workforce retiring in the next decade. The crisis has reached emergency levels in many rural communities. At the same time, our water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure are in desperate need of reinvestment to be resilient for the future, and stricter guidelines are coming out to protect water. Ensuring clean water is available to communities necessitates a highly-skilled, trained, and certified workforce. The 2018 state water report, Tennessee H20, outlines the crisis we could face. It states that while protecting the availability of water in our state is important, “equal attention must be given to the critical need associated with a diminishing workforce charged with the maintenance, security, and growth of our infrastructure investment. The state is quickly reaching the disturbing point of not having a sufficient number of operators to protect, manage, and maintain these systems in the future.” In today's River Talk, we dive into the water workforce crisis and its impacts on our state, plus we explore how to connect young people to these rewarding STEM careers. Our guests on the podcast include Kevin Byrd from the Tennessee Association of Utility Districts, Cristina Carbajo with the Water Quality Technology Program at Pellissippi State Community College, Misty Brown with the Tennessee STEM Innovation Network, and, of course, the Cumberland River Compact. These diverse partners come together in a unique collaborative approach to addressing the water workforce crisis and to providing clean water for Tennesseeans. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thecompact/message

Fifty-four years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized for the first time that juvenile court cases are adversarial criminal proceedings. Therefore, the Court held that children are entitled to due process and a right to an attorney when facing charges in delinquency court! To commemorate this landmark case, a small group of youth defenders decided to start the In Defense of Children Podcast, where we hope to contribute to building our community of defenders and raise our level of practice we bring on behalf of these kids every day! On our very first episode, Host Christina Kleiser talks with Memphis Defense Attorney and President of the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Mike Working, and Ebony Howard, Deputy Director of the National Juvenile Defender Center (NJDC) about the unrealized promises of In re Gault (1967). Over 10 million Americans misused opioids in 2018, which includes over 800,000 heroin users. In 2016, there were more than 64,000 overdose deaths in the United States; in 2017 overdose deaths jumped to over 70,000. This is a number that continues to grow in at least 23 states. Opioid addiction is a crisis that defies age and sex differences; it defies county and state lines; up to now it has defied all attempts to curb this plague. No one questions that opioid addiction is a national crisis and it is not slacking off. Are the nation’s courts ready to take the lead in fighting this epidemic? What needs to be done and who should do it? Judge O. Duane Sloan with the Circuit Court in the Fourth Judicial District of Tennessee and Director Deborah Taylor Tate, head of the Administrative Office of the Courts for the Supreme Court of Tennessee and Co-Chair of the National Judicial Opioid Task Force, will discuss the recent Task Force Report and the efforts by the Nation’s Courts to take the lead in solving this countrywide crisis. Leave a comment or question about the episode at clapodcast@nacmnet.org. About the Speakers Judge O. Duane Sloan is a judge with the Circuit Court in the Fourth Judicial District of Tennessee. In 2019 the Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts awarded Judge Slone the National Center for State Courts’ William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence, one of the highest judicial honors in the country. He has been recognized for his groundbreaking work helping people with opioid use disorder. Combatting the opioid epidemic is not just a professional commitment for Judge Slone. It’s personal. In 2011, Judge Slone and his wife, Gretchen, adopted an infant son who was born suffering from withdrawals as a result of his birth mother’s opioid use. Judge Sloan is also the 2018 recipient of the National Center for State Courts, “Distinguished Service” Award; the 2017 Tennessee Association of Recovery Court Professionals, “Judges Making a Difference” Award; and the 2016 Tennessee Public Health Association, “Visionary” Award, given for work in reducing incidences of births with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, including innovations in rural Tennessee to provide healthy housing and access to prenatal medical and behavioral health care. Known for his deeply Southern accent, Brady Dale Morris is a national HIV advocate and public speaker living in Nashville, Tennessee. After receiving an AIDS diagnosis in July 2009, Brady began a downward spiral into drugs, alcohol, and depression that led him down a path that ended in several suicide attempts. While recovering from his last attempt, an acquaintance approached him and told Brady he too had recently been diagnosed and needed help in what steps he should take next. That was Brady’s “light bulb” moment and from that day he has dedicated himself to helping those newly diagnosed with HIV and combating the stigma directly felt by others living with HIV. As an independent advocate, he uses his online reach to promote factual and accurate health information about UequalsU and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP.) Additionally, Brady works in several large capacities with big organizations including: Tennessee AIDS Advocacy Network (TAAN,) Tennessee Association of People With AIDS (TAPWA,) Community HIV AIDS Partnership (C.H.A.P.,), is a founding member of the National Steering Committee for Prevention Access Campaign’s #UequalsU message, and has served as the Co-Chairman of the Nashville Regional HIV Planning Council for the past two years.

It’s hurricane season—and extreme weather events are on the rise. Along with the catastrophic losses that families face after the flood is the economic burden on taxpayers through the National Flood Insurance Program. It’s the financial lifeline for those who carry flood insurance and an essential funding source for both disaster preparation and recovery efforts. However, the program is also $25 billion in debt, and more than a quarter of that total is from properties that flood repeatedly. It’s a growing issue affecting more than just coastal cities. Host Dan LeDuc discusses the flood that devastated Nashville, Tennessee, in 2010 with Roger Lindsey, chairman of the Tennessee Association of Floodplain Management and practice leader for Stormwater and Floodplain Management for Nashville’s Metro Water Services, and Laura Lightbody, who directs Pew’s flood-prepared communities work.
