People were flooding Cavill Avenue to get a taste of the long-standing American restaurant. Author and health commentator David Gillespie told Shane Doherty on Summer Drive, "Look, we do love a good brand, don't we?" "You change the brand on the front to Wendy's from McDonald's or Hungry Jack's or whatever it is, it doesn't make any difference," Mr Gillespie continued.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Beginning in the 19th century, Americans harvested ice from frozen lakes and transported it to warm places, turning ice harvesting and delivery into a lucrative business. Then came manufacturing and refrigeration, ice cream and iced tea. One of the first films made in America was of an ice hockey game. These are some of ice's cultural moments that historian and journalist Amy Brady explores in “ICE: From Mixed Drinks to Skating Rinks—a Cool History of a Hot Commodity.” We talk to Brady about the history of ice, the industries it has spawned and its place in present life as we face an ever-warming planet. Listen to the recent KQED reporting on alleged child labor violations in California. Today Nathan is joined by legendary former Harper's editor Lewis Lapham. Lapham is the author of numerous books including Money and Class in America, Age of Folly, and Lapham's Rules of Influence. He currently edits Lapham's Quarterly. He also wrote and starred in the delightfully strange documentary/musical The American Ruling Class. He was called "without doubt our greatest satirist" by Kurt Vonnegut, is a member of the American Society of Magazine Editors Hall of Fame, and went to India with the Beatles. The New York Times once called him "amusing." Lapham's books focus heavily on the culture of the American financial and political elite. In Money and Class in America he writes about his own privileged upbringing and the spiritual emptiness of life among those who see price as synonymous with value. We discuss:- The way that rich people go to great lengths to pretend they don't care about money even when it's the main thing they care about- The shallowness of an Ivy League education, and the emphasis on networking over learning anything valuable- How journalists self-censor to avoid hurting their access to the powerful- The social effects of having a publishing industry that cares far more about marketable books than good ones- Why David Graeber and David Wengrow's new book The Dawn of Everything offers a hopeful vision for a possible alternative society that does not worship money and consumer goods

“Winning is everything” is such a common phrase that we rarely question where it comes from and why we apply it to everyday experiences.  One can win a little league game, an election, the lottery, a friendly competition at work or an unfriendly one.  Entrepreneurs can win in business and patients aspire to win their battles over cancer and other sickness.  We can win in life itself, and as the actor Charlie Sheen has recently told us, we can actually be “bi-winning” in our struggles with swings of mania and depression. In Winning: Reflections on an American Obsession (Princeton University Press, 2010), Francesco Duina’s attempts to discover where this fascination with winning comes from, and why as Americans we’re so fond of using the concept in almost everything that we do. Behind our drive to win, he claims, is our desire for differentiation – the longing to be set apart from the rest, and to prove to others and ourselves that we are legitimate and right. But when Duina explores winning outside of the American context, he finds that not all societies share equally in this obsession. President Obama has recently challenged Americans to “win the future.” In this book, Francesco Duina tells us why Obama–and so many Americans–considers the future and everything else a kind of zero-sum game.
