Holding Up The Ladder

Who is art for? And how are we to engage with it? Should art be in museums or outside in parks, town squares or on the side of buildings? Is art the province of an elite few, the private collector, with a rarefied language that excludes? And why do artists make art, is it for ourselves, do we exist because there's an audience, is it because of our ego? My guest today thinks so.eL Seed is a contemporary artist whose practice bridges painting and sculpture, developing a unique visual language inspired by the tradition of calligraphy and the energy of urban art. He uses art to explore ideas around identity, cultural heritage, creating connection and inspiring ideas of unity. About how he engages with the communities where his art is placed. Whether it be the Coptic community of Zaraeeb in Cairo or a rural community in Nepal. For eL Seed art is an amplifier, it's about humanity and that really comes through in our discussion.I remember listening to an interview with British sculptor Anthony Gormley, perhaps best known for his life size and life-like cast iron figures of men, he said that art belongs in the world, that ‘art is about life and it needs to be in life.' That it can change the way we behave, think and feel. That's exactly how I would describe eL Seed's work.Guest: eL SeedTitle: ‘Artists exist because there is an audience'Music: Eminem Stan, Booba, Fairuz, Umm KultumLinksWebsite - https://elseed-art.com/IG - https://www.instagram.com/elseed/Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@elseedart Cairo project - https://youtu.be/g9M3HIjHuq0?si=0tfE03TxY5nxvJaE Find out ways to support the Israel-Palestine project click herePodcast WebsitePodcast IG Hosted on Acast. What is culture-led housing and can it play a role in tackling the UK's housing crisis? This is the introductory episode to a new ASSET ARREST mini-series on 'culture-led housing', made in collaboration with The London Cultural Diversity Lab at City, University of London. The London Cultural Diversity Lab is one of five cross-Europe “laboratories” that form the Creative Impact Research Centre Europe (CIRCE). Throughout 2023, the five labs are exploring the multiple challenges and opportunities facing the European creative economy in the midst of an unfolding polycrisis. In this episode I introduce the idea of 'culture-led housing' and speak to architectural researcher and practitioner Jonathan Orlek. Clips sampled can be found at: 1. Nicoletta Lambertucci's career so far has been a story of beginnings. Firstly, working as a Curator at DRAF, she joined the team in 2012 just after the Foundation moved to its previous site, which was a huge former furniture factory in Camden.  Since 2017 she has been Curator of Contemporary Art at The Box, co-shaping the strategy for this £46m museum, gallery and archive. Collections can be seen as fluid entities and resources. From this perspective, Ned and Nicoletta talk about curatorial approaches and responsibilities when working with diverse collections, the role of the curator within institutions and how to create an integrated programme. The Box in Plymouth opened to the public on 25 September, Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-5pm. @nicolettalambertucciHave questions, comments or want to see more of what DRAF does? Akram Khan is hardly ever still; an international star, he spins around the world with his dance company - just this last month he's been performing in Santa Barbara, Corby, Moscow, Seattle, Spain, Austria... Born in London, the son of a Bangladeshi restaurant owner, Khan was talent-spotted at the age of 13 by director Peter Brook, who cast him in the RSC production of the Mahabharata - which led to his first international tour on stage. Now just into his forties, Akram Khan has won numerous international dance awards, including the Olivier. In 2012 he choreographed and danced in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics. He's collaborated with prima ballerina Sylvie Guillem, with sculptor Anthony Gormley, and worked with the National Ballet of China. And he's choreographed for Kylie Minogue. He says 'The reason I dance - is because of music!' In Private Passions, Akram Khan tells Michael Berkeley about his childhood, when his aunties would gather and sing till 3am, and require the exhausted young Akram to accompany them on the tabla drums. He reveals why he decided to become a dancer, not a musician. And he talks frankly about trying to be a good father to his two young children now, and how they have transformed his life. Musical choices include Mussorgsky, Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, performance poetry by Kate Tempest, and a Flamenco protest song from the Spanish Civil War. Produced by Elizabeth Burke A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3.

John McCarthy discusses Art and Travel with leading art critic Andrew Graham-Dixon explaining his abiding passion for the raw art of Sicily which has been drawing him back to the island for over twenty years. He talks about his latest BBC 2 series on Sicily called 'Sicily Unpacked' which, in the company of chef Giorgio Locatelli, reveals the many stunning works of art round every corner as well as the fresh ingredients which make for a delicious and unique cuisine. Part of the appeal, he says, is that the Art is so accessible, not locked up in museums and galleries but available to all at virtually every street corner. The art, he feels, has not become homogenised as in so many other places. Art academic Dr. Amy Dempsey discusses her love of Outdoor Art which led to her book called 'Destination Art' cataloguing two hundred of the most modern and contemporary art sites around the world, mostly in Europe and the USA. Many of the works are unshowy and quite difficult to find, all part of the experience for the traveller. She makes particular mention of works in the Netherlands (the 'positive' and 'negative' Green Cathedrals) and the work of Anthony Gormley and Anish Kapoor. She believes these works have been overlooked in the past and have not received the attention they deserve by the critic and the traveller. Susie Parr explains her ten year quest to chart the history of outdoor bathing in the UK. To that end, she has swum in chilly harbour waters, at glorious beaches and in once stylish lidos. She also explores how immersion in cold water seems to have inspired art and creativity and was enjoyed especially by some of the key Romantic figures including, Wordsworth, Shelley and Byron. Producer: Margaret Collins.
