James Cameron-Wilson celebrates a buoyant summer box office climbing another 42% with #1 Jurassic World: Rebirth. But despite a great cast including Scarlett Johansson and director Gareth Edwards, it is very formulaic and feels like a retread of past glories. Fiona Shaw and Emma Mackey star in #11 Hot Milk but again, despite such fine actors, it is bafflingly abtruse and so little happens, you might as well see the excellent trailer which even includes the climactic scene. On Netflix, James was disappointed by The Old Guard 2. Much as he enjoyed the first spin on immortaility this one is overbudgeted, crammed full of exotic locations and leaden. The show has been described as  a kaleidoscopic journey through theatre and its history, and will also mark Dickie Beau's fourth venture into Hampstead Theatre, a place which he describes fondly as his latest show prepares to open. Indeed, it was only earlier this year when he was starring opposite Simon Russell Beale in an acclaimed revival of 'The Invention of Love'. In this way, it seems that there will likely be an ongoing partnership between him and the theatre, with Hampstead's audiences continuing to be blown away by his performances. In this brand new interview with Dickie Beau, he tells us about the origins of SHOWMANISM and how he began by thinking of theatres as sacred, communal spaces. We talked about his unique process of using technology in his shows as he transforms himself into various esteemed actors including Sir Ian McKellen and Fiona Shaw. Over the course of our conversation, Dickie opens up about his love for actors and for live theatre before discussing his hopes for how audiences will come away from the show having had a fundamentally human experience.SHOWMANISM opens at Hampstead Theatre on 18 June and runs till 12 July 2025.Support the show

Welcome back, Void! You get a monologue, and you get a monologue, AND YOU GET A MONOLOGUE!! Monologues for the ages! We're seriously awe-struck at the quality of the speeches in this half of the season. Andy Serkis leading the prison break, Stellan Skarsgård digging deep into sacrifice, and Fiona Shaw being the first stone thrown (literally). Following the first strike against the Empire at Aldhani, the sparks of rebellion are kindled across the galaxy. For each hero rising up, there is an equal psychopath torturing, stalking, and just being creepy. Mon Mothma is our "character growth" MVP as she chooses to walk the walk and sacrifice everything, even her daughter, to the rebellion. This season is one of the best pieces of Star Wars storytelling, period.

Potterversity Episode 59: Holding Space for Harry

We're always holding space for Harry Potter, but no one does it quite like the Harry Potter Academic Conference. Our favorite event of the year was back in person at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia in October and full of interesting insights as usual. Katy and Emily talk with Potterversity producer and conference communications coordinator Laurie Beckoff and conference vice chair Lauren Camacci about the range of presentations and the wonderful community of scholar-fans. Emily, Laurie, and Katy discuss their respective papers: "Harry, Gawain, Green Knights, and Goblets," about the connections between Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight; "'All with Flaming Red Hair': Harry Potter and the Magical Redhead Tradition," on how Harry Potter engages with literary and historical depictions of redheads; and "The Petunia Palimpsest," about Fiona Shaw's portrayal of Petunia Dursley and Maarva Andor on the Star Wars show Andor. We also talk about some of our favorite papers from the weekend. Dumbledore was a popular topic and remains a contentious figure. Psychology and politics were present alongside literary analyses. We enjoyed presentations on Madam Pince and the Hogwarts library (Ian McLaughlin), sexual innuendo and maturation in Goblet of Fire (Bill Ward), the series as wainscot fantasy (Liam Butchart and Katherine Wang), property law in the wizarding world (Dorothea Keiter), entrepreneurship and business in the wizarding world as well as the fandom (Abigail Kohler), and a potluck panel about food in Harry Potter (organized by Mark-Anthony Lewis). There was plenty to learn from the plenary lecture by Priscilla Hobbs, author of Harry Potter and the Myth of Millennials, as well as the invited talks by conference regular Brent Satterly and first-time presenter Julian Wamble, known for sharing snippets of his Harry Potter class on TikTok and his Critical Magic Theory podcast. The conference switches off annually between in-person and online events, so we look forward to joining a global community of scholars virtually in 2025.

Director Simon Otto is here to chat failed Christmas gifts, formative films, and finding the balance of a multithreaded storyline story and having to take into account theatrical experience versus streaming consumption. This interview contains mild spoilers for That Christmas. More about Simon Otto Simon Otto is the Director of That Christmas. He started his directing career on the Netflix animated series Dragons: Race to the Edge and Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia. Most recently, he directed the Love, Death & Robots episode ‘The Tall Grass' and developed, executive produced and served as the Supervising Director on the successful Netflix series, A Tale Dark & Grimm. Prior to turning to directing, he spent over 20 years working at DreamWorks Animation, most notably as the Head of Character Animation on the Oscar-nominated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy. Born and raised in Switzerland, Simon studied animation at the prestigious Les Gobelins Animation School in Paris, France. More about That Christmas Based on the charming trilogy of children's books by beloved multi award-winning writer/director Richard Curtis (FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, NOTTING HILL, LOVE ACTUALLY, YESTERDAY), THAT CHRISTMAS follows a series of entwined tales about family and friends, love and loneliness, and Santa Claus making a big mistake, not to mention an enormous number of turkeys! This heartwarming comedy from Locksmith Animation marks Curtis' first foray into animation, serving as the film's writer and executive producer, and also the feature directorial debut of renowned animation veteran Simon Otto (LOVE, DEATH & ROBOTS, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON FILMS). Nicole P. Hearon (MOANA, FROZEN) and Adam Tandy (THE THICK OF IT, DETECTORISTS) are producers. John Krasinski is most famously known for playing Jim Halpert on “The Office.” However, he's also a movie director. His last two movies, “A Quiet Place” and “A Quiet Place Part II”, were ones that would give kids nightmares. In his latest movie, “If”, he tries to take them, and their parents, to a happy place instead.  “If” is the story of Bea, a 12 year old girl that has gone through a tragedy and is staring a potential one head on. Her Dad is going through surgery for a heart problem. However, she starts seeing mysterious figures, and Ryan Reynolds. It turns out these mysterious figures are the former imaginary friends of different children. They're trying to inspire their former kids to remember them as their imaginary friends. Along the way, Bea decides to help them do that. Many kids have imaginary friends. Maybe you did too. If they were here they might steer you towards “If” or tell you it's the worst movie ever. Which one is it? I give you at least my opinion about “If” in this episode. “If” stars Ryan Reynolds, Cailey Fleming, John Krasinski, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Steve Carell, Fiona Shaw, Louis Gossett Jr., Alan Kim, Liza Colon-Zayas, Bobby Moynihan, Catharine Daddario and Aubrey Hoffman.Support the Show.Feel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook
