Welcome to episode 86 of the One for the Money podcast. In the late 1960s and early 70s, a famous psychological study was conducted that has since been called the Stanford Marshmallow test. The study was designed to explore the concept of delayed gratification. In this episode, I'll share how life might be considered one giant marshmallow test.In the tips, tricks, and strategies portion, I will share a tip regarding how to not eat the entire marshmallow. In this episode...The Marshmallow Test [0:36]Delayed Gratification in Personal Finance [2:23]Investing Rewards Patience [10:01]Teaching Financial Discipline [10:46]In the late 1960s and early 70s, a psychologist named Walter Mischel at Stanford University conducted what has become a famous psychological study. The study was designed to explore the concept of delayed gratification — the ability to resist the temptation for an immediate reward in order to receive a larger reward a short time later. Here is how the Experiment was set up:600 preschool-aged children, roughly 4-6 years old, participated in the study. Each child was placed in a room with a marshmallow placed on a table. The researcher told the child that they could either eat the marshmallow immediately or wait 15 minutes without eating it. If they waited without eating the marshmallow, they would be rewarded with a second marshmallow. The researcher then left the room, leaving the child alone with the first marshmallow. The Key Findings as a result of this research were that Individuals had varied Self-Control: Some children immediately ate the marshmallow, while others were able to wait the full 15 minutes for the larger reward. Now you might be wondering what a 4-6-year-old eating a marshmallow has to do with personal finance? Well, that's what was most remarkable about this study was what the follow-up studies revealed. The outcomes were very successful at Predicting Future Outcomes: Over the subsequent decades, Mischel and his colleagues followed up with many of the children who participated in the experiment, and the results were astounding:It found that the children who were able to wait for the second marshmallow, decades later, tended to have significantly better life outcomes in terms of higher SAT scores, lower rates of obesity, more likely to be financially stable as well as to have greater job satisfaction. The ability to delay gratification was a more accurate predictor of future success than their scores on an IQ test. Now it should be noted that while the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment became a widely discussed study about the power of self-control, later research showed that the environment in which a child grows up, including factors like trust in caregivers, socioeconomic status, and stability, can influence how well they are able to delay gratification. For instance, children in more unstable environments may have less reason to trust that the promised later reward will actually come. But suffice it to say, the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment remains one of the most influential studies in psychology, because it exposed the impact that self-control has on later life outcomes.I've read about this study numerous times over the years, but recently it has led me to this thought: is life really just one giant marshmallow test? Is delaying gratification part of the better planning one needs to implement to have a WAY better life?As I thought about this more, I came to the belief that generally speaking, life is one giant marshmallow test and that individuals can both learn and develop the skills so they too can have much better life outcomes. It also seems to me that businesses and politicians can hijack our desires for immediate gratification to their advantage.Individuals...

He highlights the importance of understanding the motivations behind pornography use, which can range from curiosity to emotional coping mechanisms. Brian also addresses the stigma surrounding addiction labels. He explains that only about 10% of users experience compulsive behavior, while many others face problematic use. Church leaders should focus on creating a safe environment for youth to discuss these issues. By asking questions about triggers and providing coping strategies, leaders can help youth navigate their experiences. So, Timmerie's talking all about the Cass Report: you know, that massive study from the UK that's got everyone rethinking the benefit of gender transitions for kids. She brings on Dr. Theresa Farnan, who's a moral philosopher and all-around expert on this stuff, to explain it for us. The Big Deal: The Cass Report is 366 pages of hardcore data that says, basically: there's NO benefit to transitioning kids: none! Whether it's puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, or full-on surgeries, this report shows it's not helping minors and, in fact, could be doing some serious harm. This study is based on a four-year, international review. It's the real deal. What's the Drama in the UK? Doctors in the UK are fuming. Their medical leadership came out in support of transitioning, but a bunch of doctors said, "Nope!" and even quit over it. The review showed that these gender clinics were a mess, and kids weren't thriving; they were actually doing worse. Key Findings Long-term follow-up: In the UK, they track people's health long-term, so they saw how bad things got. Kids who were transitioned weren't just unhappy; they were struggling even more. Kiera Bell's lawsuit: Kiera, a detransitioner, sued after having a double mastectomy as a minor. She basically said, "I needed mental health support, not surgery." Even though she lost her case, her bravery triggered this whole review. Kids are falling behind: When kids go on puberty blockers, they don't just delay puberty; they're left behind developmentally, socially, even intellectually. One study showed a kid's IQ dropped after being put on blockers. Yeah, no one's talking about that! No evidence, all harm: The report found zero proof that transitioning helps kids. And get this: they called social transitioning (like letting kids live as the opposite gender) a "psychosocial intervention" - fancy talk for saying it's messing with their heads. Why is the US So Behind? While other countries like the UK are saying "enough is enough" with these gender transitions, the US is still lagging. Timmerie and Dr. Farnan point out that we're just not keeping up with the latest data, and it's hurting kids. Dr. Farnan says that the Cass Report is the new gold standard for showing how dangerous and misguided these treatments can be. It's not just a moral argument: the science backs it up, too.

What's the ROI of a business book? Peter Winick and Bill Sherman dive into this game-changing question in the latest episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership. Partnering with industry giants like Gotham Ghostwriters, Amplify Publishing Group, and Smith Publicity, they've launched the most comprehensive study on the ROI of business books to date. Over 350 authors participated, and the results are eye-opening. The data shows 64% of business books turn a profit, with a median of $11,350 for books that have been out for at least six months. But here's where it gets interesting—authors with a clear strategy saw a median profit of $96,000. The key takeaway? Profit is more about strategy than sales alone. Books with a robust launch plan, PR efforts, or even ghostwriting support outperform those without. For every dollar spent, the average book generates $1.24 in revenue—not just from book sales but from lucrative add-ons like speaking engagements, consulting, and workshops. Another intriguing finding? Authors with weak strategies ended up spending more than those with a focused approach. And when it comes to satisfaction with publishers, hybrid models shine. 70% of authors using traditional or hybrid publishing were satisfied, but hybrid authors were twice as likely to be enthusiastic about their experience. Catch the full episode and dive into the data at www.authorroi.com. Three Key Takeaways: • Strategic planning drives profits: Authors with a clear strategy around their book—like PR, launch plans, and ghostwriting—saw a median profit of $96,000, significantly higher than those without a plan. • Revenue extends beyond book sales: For every $1 spent on a business book, authors generated $1.24 in revenue, with most of the profit coming from related services like speaking, consulting, and workshops, not just book sales. • Hybrid publishing leads to higher satisfaction: Hybrid authors were twice as likely to express strong satisfaction with their publishing experience compared to traditional or self-published authors.

One of their most exciting initiatives is the development of an underwater seed harvester designed to automate the collection of seagrass seeds. This project is crucial for enhancing restoration efforts, as seagrass meadows play a vital role in coastal ecosystems. Importance of Seagrass Habitats Seagrass habitats are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. They significantly contribute to coastal biodiversity, provide security for coastlines, and serve as important blue carbon habitats, meaning they sequester carbon and help combat climate change. However, many of these habitats are currently facing degradation due to various environmental pressures, including poor water quality and human activities. The Need for Automation Traditionally, collecting seagrass seeds has been a labor-intensive process, requiring volunteers to wade, snorkel, or dive in shallow waters to gather seeds manually. This method is not only time-consuming but also limited by the number of people who can participate. Project Seagrass recognized the need for a more efficient approach to seed collection to scale up restoration efforts. The Underwater Seed Harvester The underwater seed harvester aims to mechanize the seed collection process. Drawing inspiration from a prototype developed by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science two decades ago, Project Seagrass is building upon this foundation to create a more effective tool suitable for varying environmental conditions. The harvester will operate by "giving the seagrass a haircut," cutting the seagrass shoots at a specific height to collect seeds without damaging the underlying roots or rhizomes. Research and Development Before moving forward with the harvester, Project Seagrass conducted extensive research to ensure that the cutting process would not negatively impact the seagrass. They collaborated with regulators in Wales to develop a series of experimental trials, comparing the health of seagrass that had been cut with that of untouched meadows. The results showed no significant negative impact, confirming that the seagrass could recover quickly after being pruned. Future Plans With the prototype successfully tested, Project Seagrass is now focused on securing funding through a crowdfunding campaign to build a fully operational version of the seed harvester. Once funded, they plan to work with engineering partners to finalize the design and conduct further tests in the upcoming summer. The ultimate goal is to create a reliable tool that can be used not only in the UK but also in other regions facing similar seagrass restoration challenges. The Importance of Seagrass and the Underwater Seed Harvester Project Seagrass habitats are vital coastal ecosystems that play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and combating climate change. Often referred to as the "canary in the coal mine" for marine environments, they indicate the overall health of coastal ecosystems. Unfortunately, seagrass meadows are facing significant degradation worldwide due to various factors, including poor water quality and habitat loss. Why Seagrass Matters Biodiversity: Seagrass meadows are among the most biodiverse habitats on the planet, providing essential habitat and nursery grounds for numerous marine species, including fish, invertebrates, and other wildlife. Coastal Protection: Seagrasses help stabilize coastlines by reducing erosion and providing a buffer against storm surges. This is particularly important in the context of rising sea levels and increasing storm intensity due to climate change. Blue Carbon: Seagrass meadows are significant carbon sinks, sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and helping mitigate climate change. They store carbon in their biomass and in the sediment beneath them, making them critical in the fight against global warming. The Challenge of Seed Collection To restore degraded seagrass habitats, it is essential to collect and replant seagrass seeds. Traditionally, this process has involved volunteers wading, snorkeling, or diving to gather seeds, which can be labor-intensive and limited by the number of available volunteers. The manual collection of seeds is not only time-consuming but also poses challenges in terms of safety and efficiency. The Underwater Seed Harvester Project Recognizing the need for a more efficient method of seed collection, Project Seagrass has initiated the development of an underwater seed harvester. This innovative technology aims to automate the seed collection process, making it quicker and more efficient. Building on Previous Research: The concept of an underwater seed harvester is not entirely new. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science developed a prototype 20 years ago, but Project Seagrass is adapting and improving upon this design to suit different environmental conditions. Prototype Development: The team at Project Seagrass has conducted extensive trials to ensure that the harvester does not negatively impact the seagrass. They have demonstrated that cutting the seagrass to a certain height—akin to giving it a "haircut"—does not harm the plant and allows for the collection of seeds that float to the surface during specific times of the year. Efficiency and Scale: The harvester is designed to be towed behind a vessel at a controlled speed, allowing for the collection of a significant number of seeds in a short amount of time. In healthy seagrass meadows, there can be anywhere from 100 to 10,000 seeds per square meter, meaning that the potential for seed collection is immense. Future Plans: Once the crowdfunding campaign is successful, the team plans to finalize the design and test the harvester in the field. They aim to refine the technology further and explore its applicability in various regions around the world, ultimately contributing to the restoration of seagrass habitats globally. Conclusion The underwater seed harvester project represents a significant step forward in seagrass restoration efforts. By automating the seed collection process, Project Seagrass aims to enhance the efficiency of restoration activities, ultimately leading to healthier coastal ecosystems. Supporting this initiative through crowdfunding not only aids in the development of this innovative technology but also contributes to the broader goal of conserving and restoring vital seagrass habitats worldwide. The initial prototype of the seed harvester developed by Project Seagrass has provided promising results regarding its impact on seagrass health. Through a series of trials, researchers found that cutting the seagrass to collect seeds does not negatively affect its overall health, effectively demonstrating that this process is akin to giving the seagrass a "haircut." Key Findings from the Prototype Trials Methodology of the Trials: The team conducted experiments comparing areas of seagrass that were cut using the prototype harvester against areas that remained untouched. They established transect lines underwater to monitor the health of the seagrass over time. Divers were involved in both cutting the seagrass with shears and using the prototype sled to collect seeds. Results of the Cutting: The results indicated no significant difference in the health of the seagrass between the cut areas and the natural populations that had not been impacted. This finding is crucial as it suggests that the seagrass can withstand this form of harvesting without suffering detrimental effects. Growth Rates: Seagrass is known for its resilience and rapid growth. After the cutting, new shoots began to emerge quickly, with growth rates of three to four centimeters in just a few weeks during the peak summer period. This rapid turnover reinforces the idea that cutting the seagrass merely stimulates growth rather than harming it. Ecological Context: The natural grazing behavior of various marine animals, such as turtles and geese, further supports the notion that seagrass can recover from cutting. These animals regularly graze on seagrass, and the plants have adapted to this natural form of pruning. The prototype's cutting method mimics this natural process, allowing the seagrass to thrive post-harvest. Regulatory Approval: The successful trials have also led to increased confidence among regulators. Initially, there was concern about the potential impact of cutting seagrass, but the evidence gathered from the trials has helped to alleviate these fears. The regulators in Wales, who were initially apprehensive, have begun to understand that the cutting method is not harmful and can be a sustainable practice for seed collection.

The impact of omega-3 fatty acids on chronic disease risk has been a topic of considerable interest and research. The VITAL trial, which assessed the effects of vitamin D and omega-3 supplements on various health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease and cancer, provided insightful findings. Additionally, numerous other supplement trials have examined different dosages and formulations of omega-3s, yielding mixed results. Some trials have highlighted significant benefits, while others have shown minimal impact, leading to ongoing debates in the scientific community. Reconciling this evidence base requires a nuanced understanding of the study populations, dosages, and specific health outcomes investigated. The variability in results can often be attributed to differences in trial design, such as whether the focus was on primary or secondary prevention, the baseline dietary intake of participants, and the specific types of omega-3 supplements used. Understanding these nuances is crucial for making informed recommendations about omega-3 supplementation for chronic disease prevention. In this episode, Professor JoAnn Manson will delve into the complexities of omega-3 research, discussing the VITAL trial in detail, comparing it with other significant studies, and providing insights into how to interpret and reconcile the diverse findings in the context of chronic disease risk. News: Venu Sports Stays Below vMVPD Partners on Price DirecTV UX Update for Satellite Customers Is Its First in Five Years … And Perhaps Its Last U.S. Subscription Streaming Had Its Most Watched Week Ever Roku Most-Used Streaming Media Device Key Findings From Running 100 TVs for Over 10,000 Hours RTINGS.COM We have been following RTINGS.COM's accelerated longevity test on 100 TVs pretty much from the beginning. They started this experiment back in October 2022. They have some key findings out which led them to conclude that thin LCD TVs break faster under prolonged use. They concluded: The goal of RTINGS.com's ongoing 100 TV longevity test is to push TVs to the limits of their durability to examine failure points as they happen. One clear trend we've observed and investigated is that thin, edge-lit LCD TVs fail prematurely compared to LCD TVs with other backlighting technology. The results of this investigation are unequivocal: edge-lit TVs are inherently prone to significant durability issues, including warped reflector sheets, cracked light guide plates, and burnt-out LEDs due to concentrated heat. These problems manifest after prolonged use at maximum brightness, posing a significant risk to their long-term reliability. This analysis, corroborated by real-world observations, highlights a crucial consideration for consumers and the industry. As manufacturers continue to push for thinner designs, addressing these durability concerns is imperative to ensure consumer satisfaction and trust. For consumers in the market for an LCD TV to whom the durability of their purchase is important, we recommend prioritizing models with better heat distribution, such as direct-lit or FALD TVs, for improved longevity and performance.
