Allison Bourke, or Allie as her friends lovingly call her, is a true force of nature in the community! From a young age, she was twirling across the stage with the National Ballet of Canada, playing basketball and competing in dance competitions like a pro. But when knee injuries and five ACL surgeries slowed her down, she switched gears—though not without leaving behind some major dance and court shoes to fill!Allie didn't stop there. With a passion for learning and a heart full of big dreams, she dove into Early Childhood Education, teaching, and psychology. Those expensive degrees? Totally worth it, because they gave her the knowledge to do some serious good in the world. After teaching English in Japan (yes, Allie's a world traveler too!), she came back to Canada and took the reins at Oxford Learning Waterloo in 2013, where her impact on education has been nothing short of inspiring. But wait, there's more! Allie's a total multitasker—she's not just an education advocate, she's also a model, an actress, and an audiobook narrator. She loves stepping into new roles and bringing her energy to everything she does. In fact, she got scouted by a modeling agent in 2021 and has been having a blast ever since, winning competitions, landing commercials, and showing off her stunning talent. Over the last five years, she's even dipped her toes into acting and voiceover work, influencing and more, because why not? Allie's always up for a new challenge!Beyond her personal career, Allie is deeply committed to giving back. She's involved in initiatives like Black Innovation Hub and Food4Kids, helping meet community needs, and she's a key player in committees like Women's Leadership and Libro's Council, where her leadership skills shine. A passion for Allie is watching her beloved KW Titans thrive in this community. She's been in attendance since the beginning, 8 years ago and has been a sponsor with Oxford Learning Waterloo just as long. She's sure to tell you to get to a game in any conversation you have with her!But the best part? Allie believes in getting just 1% better every single day, and that mindset is what drives her to continuously improve and inspire everyone around her. Whether it's helping students unlock their potential or embracing new adventures, Allie is a reminder that there's no limit to whatAllison Bourke, (She/Her/Elle), RECE, M.PSYCH,Director/OwnerOxford Learning Waterloo,10 Fischer Hallman Rd. This is a new-to-me French expression that means the things you think about after the fact. Elizabeth asked me what it is about ‘every day movement' that inspires me to create dance? Prior to this question, there was some talk about how we are meant to move and dance, and my fascination with our eight fundamental movement patterns babies sequence through in their first year of life. But what I realize now is that not only do these patterns set us up to be ready learners, and able to function at our highest potential, they also allow us to develop a lot of the attributes found in studying ballet. As a dancer, I've been told that I observe and move through the world always from a dancer's viewpoint. I am not a dancer only when on stage or in the studio. And here lies the connection perhaps to a life philosophy: to move gently in the world and give more than take. This is important to me that ballet is more than the steps or costume or story. Ballet movement, philosophy, and the music that coordinates with ballet includes deep emotions and physical expression. The feeling of ourselves in space and ability to imagine many different ways to move can be deadened as we age. How to simulate the exhilaration we feel and have known in a class when the participants can no longer run?The last question posed by Elizabeth was how do I envision ballet in the future? I would like teachers to bring joy to the students, knowledge of the roots of each step, why they were created, and how we can bring quality of movement to feel and see the artistry that ballet was developed for. People were interested in, and understood, how feeling, seeing, and surrounding oneself in beauty, and things of beauty improved oneself. From inside and out, you could have your world stretched. As for ballet on stage, it's a big question. Ballet directors are coming together to ask these very serious questions from all around the world. The Dutch National Ballet started the conference ‘Positioning Ballet' in 2017, and this month for the first time, the conference will be held at Canada's National Ballet Company. How do we preserve the historic ballets with their gendered roles and story lines in today's experience? How do we retain the physical history from the original choreographers as we get further and further away from anyone alive today to pass this knowledge on? I would like to see a variety of ballets on stage from the preserved ballet technique and style that was created in the older ballets to new works that take the ballet technique to a new plane. I would like to see the dancers on stage represent our world today. How this is done, I'm not quite sure, but I am hopeful there are creatives who will know how and have the desire to do so.Music in this episode:Waltz of the Flowers - TchaikovskyBarroom Ballet - Silent Film Light - Kevin MacLeodBarroom Ballet - Silent Film Light by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100310Artist: http://incompetech.com/@eblosfield  | theadultballetstudio@gmail.com

When the founding Artistic Director of Fall for Dance North,  and of course the co-host of Mambo!, Ilter Ibrahimof  announced that he was leaving the organization after 10 glorious years, one of the most important questions that arose was: Who would take over the reins and drive the mission and vision of the festival forward? A Transition Committee was formed by FFDN's Board of Directors and Martin Bragg & Associates was engaged to help with the international search. What emerged at the end was closer to home than anyone could have imagined. In July 2024,  Lily Sutherland, the festival's current Executive Producer, and Robert Binet, who has had multiple roles with The National Ballet of Canada, were announced as the new co-leaders. Take in this intimate interview that we recorded with Ilter, Lily and Rob discussing FFDN's global connections, what occurred when Ilter decided to step down, and approaches to both individual and collective styles of leadership. Lily Sutherland and Robert Binet will officially start their new roles with FFDN in November 2024.-The 10th anniversary season of Fall for Dance North festival runs September 26th to October 6th 2024, with both free and ticketed in-person events presented in multiple venues through downtown Toronto. Visit ffdnorth.com for more info and to purchase tickets. This episode of Mambo was produced and designed by Amber Downie-Back, with help from Milana Glumicic. Mambo's original theme music and soundscape was created by Johnny Spence.

In this inspiring podcast, we share the remarkable story of strength and resilience of Ukrainian principal dancer Anna Muromtseva, who faced the most devastating and unimaginable experience of fleeing her home following the Russian invasion and restarting her life and dance career with the Hungarian National Ballet. Listen to Anna's heartfelt interview as she looks back to growing up in Ukraine and rising through the ranks from corps de ballet to soloist and principal dancer. She gives an insight into the demanding yet fulfilling dance life with the National Ballet of Ukraine, their repertoire and the rigorous performance and rehearsal schedules. Anna's deeply personal story takes a dramatic turn with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which forced her to flee her homeland along with her family. Leaving behind all her dancewear and pointe shoes, Anna faced the daunting task of finding a new company which led to auditioning for the Hungarian National Ballet alongside other displaced Ukrainian dancers. And although Anna successfully secured a contract, the only available position available was in the corps de ballet. Anna talks intimately about the physical and emotional challenges of transitioning from a principal dancer in Kyiv to the corps in Budapest. Fortunately, the company's artistic director, Tamas Solymosi, provides opportunities for dancers of all ranks to perform a variety of roles. This has seen Anna return to dancing principal roles, such as Odette/Odile in Swan Lake and helped her rediscover the love of dance in the midst of so much devastation. PRESS PLAY!
