Ann Wolfe is the Chief Curator at the Nevada Museum of Art, the only art museum in the state of Nevada accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Collaborating with paleontologist Dr. Martin Sander, she has co-curated a new exhibition at the museum titled "Deep Time: Sea Dragons of Nevada." You might know these Sea Dragons by their actual name- Ichthyosaur. On this week's episode of Renoites, Ann join Conor to discuss the exhibition and how it was created, the process of combining arts and science in museum exhibitions, working with artifacts and fossils millions of years old, the important scientists who have spearheaded expeditions into the Nevada desert, as well as the more art-focused elements of the exhibition including an 85 foot digital "point cloud" projection, a collection of thousands of dinosaur toys from around the world (note: Ichthyosaurs aren't dinosaurs!), and even the art gracing the cans of a local favorite beer, Icky IPA by Great Basin Brewing. In addition to the current exhibition, Conor and Ann discussed the importance of Land Art to the state of Nevada, including Michael Heizer's "City," a land art piece spanning over a mile of the Nevada desert and taking decades to complete, and the "Seven Magic Mountains" installation- currently a major tourist destination in Las Vegas but which is now planned to be relocated here to Northern Nevada. Born on the eastern edge of the Eurasian continent, in Hokkaido, Japan, Mayumi Nakabayashi has now spent 24 years on its western end, in the Republic of Ireland. While Mayumi's primary medium of expression is Land Art, which is art that's made through and with natural materials in the environment, she also works with voice. This means that the materials she creates with are diverse and ever-changing. From the delicate nature of working with spider webs to the dynamism of working with the human body, the contrasts and internal contradictions of Mayumi's work give her cause to think deeply about the nature of each piece she interacts with. Through Land Art, Mayumi creates geometric patterns using petals, twigs, leaves, stones, and other natural materials in her environment. While her materials inevitably come in diverse shapes and sizes, they do follow the rhythms of the sun and moon, have innate geometries in their beings, and behave collectively according to the principle of emergence. Rhythms, geometries, and patterns seem to bring harmony and connection in the natural world, and Mayumi's work is greatly inspired by these aspects of nature.

Indigo, cochineal, red earth, and corn pollen: these are among some of the traditional materials used in the art of Dakota Mace (Diné), Kéyah Keenan Henry (Diné), and Daisy Trudell-Mills (Santee Dakota, Mexican, and Jewish) in the Naaldeeh exhibition at the Bosque Redondo Memorial.  Dakota Mace is a nationally renowned artist and instructor at the Institute for American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. In creating work for the Bosque Redondo Memorial, Dakota invited her students, Kéyah and Daisy, to create works alongside her that would speak history of the place and the suffering endured by the Diné people during the Long Walk and their four-year internment at Fort Sumner.  Encounter Culture host Emily Withnall invited the three artists to speak about their art, the history of Bosque Redondo, and the ways art can provide healing for the Diné and Ndé whose histories are tied to the land.  Many Diné people grew up with warnings from elders to never travel to Bosque Redondo Memorial. Some continue to hold this warning to heart, and some, like Dakota and Kéyah, offer their art in prayer. For Daisy, the stories of the homesickness that the Diné and Ndé experienced at Bosque Redondo resonated deeply.  MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE EC0202: Listen, and Speak the Truth: Collaborating Through Conversation on the Bosque Redondo Memorial with Manuelito Wheeler and Aaron Roth El Palacio: Challenging History: The Conception and Crafting of A World-Class Exhibition That Honors One of New Mexico's Darkest Chapters Dakota Mace Daisy Trudell-Mills *** Visit https://newmexicoculture.org for info about our museums, historic sites, virtual tours, and more. Episode No. 624 features curator Leigh Arnold and artist Sarah Crowner. Arnold is the curator of "Groundswell: Women of Land Art," a survey of artists who have worked in the land that revises ossified male-centric histories at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas. The exhibition provides a broad overview of themes, interests, and artworks that women created beginning in the 'usual' land art era, the 1960s and 1970s, and updates our understanding of land art to include not only work made in the most rural reaches of North America, but also work made and installed in and around urban and suburban centers. The exhibition is on view through January 7, 2024. An excellent catalogue was published by the Nasher and DelMonico Books. Bookshop and Amazon offer it for about $55. The Pulitzer Arts Foundation is presenting "Sarah Crowner: Around Orange," a presentation of site-specific artworks that engage with the Pulitzer's Tadao Ando building and Ellsworth Kelly, whose monumental sculpture Blue Black is on permanent view at the Pulitzer. The exhibition, which was curated by Stephanie Weissberg, is on view through February 4, 2024. Concurrently, The Hill Art Foundation, New York, is showing "The Sea, the Sky, a Window," an exhibition of site-specific works Crowner is presenting with sculptures and paintings from several private collections. The exhibition is on view through February 17, 2024. Instagram: Leigh Arnold, Sarah Crowner, Tyler Green.

Ep.170 MAREN HASSINGER (b. 1947) has built an interdisciplinary practice that articulates the relationship between nature and humanity. Carefully choosing materials for their innate characteristics, Hassinger has explored the subject of movement, family, love, nature, environment, consumerism, identity, and race. The artist uses her materials to mimic nature, whether bundling it to resemble a monolithic sheaf of wheat or planting it in cement to create an industrial garden. Within the past five years, the artist has executed commissions for Dia Bridgehampton, Socrates Sculpture Park, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the Aspen Art Museum. Work is currently installed on the terrace of the Art Institute of Chicago, along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, at Longhouse Reserve in East Hampton, and in Ugo Rondinone's Sculpture Milwaukee. Hassinger will be included in the upcoming exhibition Groundswell: Women of Land Art at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas and will be honored with an upcoming two-person survey alongside Senga Nengudi at IVAM, Valencia as well as an exhibition focused on their work in performance at the Cooley Gallery, Reed College, Portland, OR. She is the recipient of the Women's Caucus for the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award. Her work can be found at the Art Institute of Chicago; the Hirshhorn Museum; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art, NYC; the San Francisco Museum of Art; the Walker Art Center, and the Whitney Museum, among others.  Photo credit ~ Museum Associates/LACMA  Susan Inglett Gallery https://www.inglettgallery.com/artists/255-maren-hassinger/overview/Smithsonian | Hirshhorn Museum  https://hirshhorn.si.edu/explore/maren-hassinger-hirshhorn-artist-diaries/ Getty https://www.getty.edu/news/getty-acquires-maren-hassinger-archive/ Dia Art https://www.diaart.org/exhibition/exhibitions-projects/maren-hassinger-exhibition-301 LongHouse Reserve https://longhouse.org/products/artist-maren-hassinger MICA https://www.mica.edu/graduate-programs/rinehart-school-of-sculpture-mfa/maren-hassinger/ Inquirer https://www.inquirer.com/arts/schuylkill-river-public-art-steel-bodies-philadelphia-20230623.html Brooklyn Rail https://brooklynrail.org/events/2023/06/02/maren-hassinger-process/ Culture Type https://www.culturetype.com/2023/09/05/latest-news-in-black-art-sonia-boyce-now-represented-by-hauser-wirth-getty-acquires-maren-hassinger-archive-tomashi-jackson-wins-rappaport-prize-more/ The Grio https://thegrio.com/2023/09/08/getty-acquires-archive-of-renowned-artist-maren-hassinger/ Sculpture Milwaukee  https://www.sculpturemilwaukee.com/nature-doesnt-know-about-us/maren-hassinger MCAD https://www.mcad.edu/events/visiting-artist-lecture-maren-hassinger Art Pil https://artpil.com/announcements/maren-hassinger-process/ MICA https://www.mica.edu/graduate-programs/rinehart-school-of-sculpture-mfa/maren-hassinger/ Wikipedia   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maren_Hassinger MoMA https://www.moma.org/artists/41280 Hammer https://hammer.ucla.edu/now-dig-this/artists/maren-hassinger Socrates Sculpture Park  https://socratessculpturepark.org/artist/maren-hassinger/ Artic https://www.artic.edu/exhibitions/10139/maren-hassinger-this-is-how-we-grow Association For Public Art https://www.associationforpublicart.org/apa-now/news/the-association-for-public-art-brings-maren-hassingers-steel-bodies-to-philadelphia/ The Great Northern Festival https://thegreatnorthernfestival.com/2023/maren-hassinger-love-for-minneapolis The Art Newspaper https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2023/08/30/maren-hassinger-archive-acquired-getty-research-institute Beverly Press https://beverlypress.com/2023/09/hassinger-works-added-to-getty-archive/

For this week's episode, Sarah talks with artist Rachelle Reichert. Rachelle shares more information about her process, her undying interest in rocks, and what she does to stay positive despite the bleak news around the climate crisis and industrialization. About Rachelle Reichert Rachelle Reichert is a visual artist and art educator based in the San Francisco Bay Area, California (Chochenyo Ohlone territory). Rachelle works in a variety of media to explore landscapes permanently altered by climate change and industrialization. She is interested in earth observation satellite imagery- how nature is composed in images and then circulated to a public, algorithmic visions, and natural systems to view how nature is manipulated by human behavior. Her research focuses on sites of specific extracted materials: salt, clay, lithium. Research findings are interpreted through drawings, photographs, and mixed-media artworks that focus on materials found at the site. Artworks embody multi-scale complexities of observing the natural world, both human and machine, and the emotional connections between the two. Artwork is included in many public and private collections, including the Center for Art+Environment Archives at the Nevada Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Archive, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Library, Facebook, and Adobe, Inc. Reichert has exhibited her work nationally and internationally at the Contemporary Jewish Museum, Center for Contemporary Art at Pacific Northwest College of Art, Anglim/Trimble Gallery, and September Gallery. Her work has been reviewed and published in the San Francisco Chronicle, Make: Magazine, Condé Nast Traveler and New American Paintings and she has completed permanent commissions for the Ritz Mandarin Oriental in Madrid, Spain and Facebook Headquarters in Menlo Park, CA. She has presented her artwork at the California Climate Change Symposium, the San Francisco State of the Estuary Conference, and the American Geophysical Union Meeting and regularly lectures on her artwork and research.   --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thesidewoopodcast/message

Meet Yara Akkari, founder of Open Spaces, a bi-annual print magazine about art, nature and travel. Yara has traveled all around the world but more specifically has been focusing on unique journeys, the outdoors and land art. Land art by its nature is quite mysterious and mystical, as you can only experience it if you actually go and see it. Images will never render reality. It has been around since the 1960s but in recent years, with environmental issues being center staged, the question whether land is still relevant is coming up. Stay tuned for more.

Nel 1969 gli artisti immaginarono il progetto Wrapped Trees, Project for Avenue des Champs- Élysées and the Rond Point des Champs-Élysée a Parigi, anch'esso mai realizzato. Wrapped Monument to Leonardo e Wrapped Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II (1970) ebbero entrambi vita breve: rispettivamente due e sette giorni.

Mike Nelson is an artist whose influential works oscillate between salvage yards and dreamscapes. He works with things from the present and the just-past, to create these spaces, that ask you to think twice about contemporary culture, and our ways of being. In his words through situations that are on the brink of obsolescence. Mike Nelson's lessons on the agency and potency of objects, and his take on his own positionality as an artist; through the metaphor of sliders on an equalizer were thought-provoking. On every occasion, an artist has to decide over a multiplicity of issues, over ethics, politics, effects, income, and many other dimensions. These virtual sliders operate as part of a decision-making process, over the give and take, and to decide how to negotiate as well as reconcile our decisions. Before we hit record, I had never come across either artist but, since researching and speaking with Liuka, she has inspired me to learn even more about these two interesting Land artists. Each part of the episode focuses on each artist in particular - the conversation was so good I didn't want to cut anything out so it's a bumper 2 part episode this week for you all! Part 1 Liuka and I discuss: - Walter De Maria Earth Room, Munich, and New York additions - Walter De Maria Mile Long Drawing Part 2 Liuka and I discuss: - Michael Heizer Double Negative - Michael Heizer Munich Depression and its digital execution in the Whitney Museum of Art Real Size Munich Rotary. Justin Bateman has made all kinds of different artworks over the years - sculpture, drawing, painting, and most recently, land art that's made of pebbles. You may have seen photos of his spectacular version of the Mona Lisa - his version is called Stona Lisa - or one of his other incredible creations. Last year, just prior to the pandemic beginning, he went to Thailand to pass the impending lockdown there. Time has passed, it's 18 months later, and he's still finding inspiration in Chiang Mai. During this time he's found new ways to express his creativity by making versions of famous paintings as well as original portraits using only pebbles and natural materials that he finds outdoors. He not only creates his own artwork, but he's also shared his creative passion as a Fine Arts professor at the University of Portsmouth and teacher of Art and Design at Fareham College in the UK. On this episode, host Angela de Burger chats with Justin about his motivation to create, what drew him to making impermanent land art, the importance of getting into a creative flow, whether he tries to convey specific messages with his artwork, and if he feels an extra connection to his works due to the personal, hands-on way they're made. Sandra Barclay and Jean Pierre Crousse, co-founder of Barclay&Crousse Architecture, will talk about the period spent in Paris and the decision to come back and work principally in Lima, Peru. What has meant and still today means to work there. As attentive, respectful preservers of regional resources and local craftsmanship, they work transforming limitations and restrictions into enticing qualities of their architecture.About their realizations, we have focused on the pluri-awarded ‘Place of Remembrance', an emblematic work, contrasted by the government but passionately supported by the Nobel Prize writer Mario Vargas Llosa and the people. Many formal ‘imperfections' narrate, as evident clues, the collaborative, choral work. And then on the ‘Paracas Museum', in the Paracas desert, as replacement of the original museum, almost totally destroyed in the 2007 earthquake, a respectful gesture that reminds Land Art artists . Follows the ‘Edificio E', University Campus in Piura, characterized by a ‘deceptive simplicity' revealing an unexpected complexity, a relevant example of intervention that, born from local contingencies, reaches a global impact. The conversation continues about their concept of ‘generous architecture' and the dialectical relation between vastness and intimacy, especially in their residential works, concluding on their approach extremely 'faithful to the essence of the building, leaving aside any formal obsession and any prominence of authorship'.
