We went and saw The Night House and I was blown away by the depth of storyline, the way the movie played with tension, and the insane twist. (1:23) - Intro(6:10) -Synopsis(8:30) -Review(18:00) -Score(29:45) -Spoilers(1:04:45) - Final Recommendations(1:05:00) - Bad Reviews for Good Movies https://youtu.be/W8WQGXkif_s Synopsis Beth (Rebecca Hall) which you will remember most recently from Godzilla vs. Kong has just lost her husband, but not to natural circumstances. He killed himself on the lake, in their boat.  This is an incredible surprise to Beth because not only was it sudden, but her husband never showed any signs of depression or mental illness. As we follow Beth in her shocked grief, we learn more and more about her husband who seemed to be hiding an alternate life. He went to great lengths to keep this other life hidden from Beth which is concerning enough without the nightly visits she gets from an ominous presence that may be human, or may be paranormal in nature. As Beth digs deeper into her husbands past, she finds a terrifying secret that he kept from her which left me quite emotional. Review The Night House came out of left field for me. I vaguely remember seeing the trailer before the theaters shut down and not being impressed by the title or the portrayal of the story. What I walked away from left me emotional, scared, and somewhat enlightened. The Night House takes grief and places it front and center, then places weird new rules on the night time that Beth now experiences. There are moments when this movie feels very much like a home invasion flick and others where it feels straight out of a Paranormal Activity movie. It even feels like a detective thriller at moments. But with all this it never feels cluttered or confused. The way this movie deals with sadness and curiosity is something that I connected with deeply and I am finding it hard to review because of how perfectly gobsmacked it left me. If monsters or aliens or raging killers are what scare you, this may not be your thing. But if death, and things that go bump in the night make your hackles rise, this is right up your alley. Matthew Layton presents Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio's weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view. This week… Matthew's guests are mother and son Beth and Christian Guardino. Christian is a very talented, charming young man. He's a musician and his instrument of choice is his voice In 2017 he had a good run on U.S TV's family entertainment juggernaut America's Got Talent. But as you know, here at Studio 1, we're not interested in such shallow fripperies. People involved in or watching these so-called reality television shows often talk of the participant's “journey” - which generally means didthey got to Round 3 or the quarter finals and did they shout at anyone or cry like a baby on the way But in the case of Beth and Christian, a much more interesting and significant journey actually began twenty one years ago when Christian was born with a severe visual impairment. As Beth says in the course of the interview you're about to hear… “I started out holding this infant and not knowing if he would ever see my face or what life would look like for him… I never knew anybody else who was legally blind” Blindness and low vision are often seen very much as “other” something that happens to someone else. One of the things we try to do here at Studio 1 is to get across the message that the people this stuff happens to are just ordinary people like you with feelings, hopes, dreams and busy busy lives. As you're about to find out, Beth was just an ordinary human being who suddenly had to leverage superhuman levels of stamina and bravery to do the best she could for her child. -- Please do get in touch with the show on any of the subjects covered in this week's show, or if there's something else you think we need to talk about. After our last episode we thought it would be interesting to dig a little deeper into the radio tales of Sherlock Holmes. As Beth is such a fan of both the character and classic radio dramas, I asked her to pick two different audio tales that we could fashion into a short show to introduce listeners unfamiliar with the form to a couple of solid examples. I expected her to stick with the series that starred Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, but she surprised me by also finding a much later show that unexpectedly did an excellent Holmes adaptation. If you enjoy the two shows we present here you can easily find more online in various places and we highly recommend the search. We might even do some future episodes like this to discuss why they stand out or if they are particularly unusual in some way. Hope you enjoy this first presentation.  If you have any comments or suggestions about the podcast please write to us at thebloodypit@gmail.com where we'll be happy to hear from you. “MY WHOLE LIFE I’VE ALWAYS BEEN A RISK TAKER. WHICH MEANS, WITHIN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE, IT’S NOT REALLY THAT RISKY. IF GOD’S LEADING YOU, THERE’S ADVENTURE ON THE OTHER END OF THOSE LEAPS OF FAITH.” BE THE VESSEL For Beth Guckenberger and her husband, much of that adventure began in Mexico, where they lived and raised a family for 15 years. “WHAT WE KNEW FOR SURE IS THAT WE WANTED AN UNCONVENTIONAL LIFE.” When the couple felt what Beth described as “a magnetic force toward something they couldn’t see but couldn’t deny” – the pull of the Holy Spirit – they pulled all of their savings and went to Mexico with the goal of serving orphans and vulnerable children. Did they have a plan? Sure. Though it was anything but complete blueprint. Did they have funds? Sure. But only to last them one year. Since their move over 25 years ago, Beth and her husband have launched Back2Back Ministries, which has grown into an international non-profit serving orphans, vulnerable children, and the communities in which they live. Today it is in over nine countries around the world, operating with millions of dollars in budgets each year. Looking back, Beth reminds us: If we follow these prompts in spirit, “God is there to do work far broader and deeper than we could do ourselves. He’s just looking for a ready vessel who will stand in the right place, at the right time. And twenty-five years later, that’s still my story.” SUPER-MOM On top of serving countless children around the globe, Beth is also a biological, adoptive, and foster mom to 11 kids – 7 girls, 4 boys – from 17-34 years of age. Because of their experience as foster and adoptive parents, Back2Back has since developed a curriculum, Trauma Free World, for parents fostering or adopting kids with informed trauma. RECKLESS FAITH First and foremost, Beth talks about how the call to “wait on the Lord” doesn’t mean stagnancy. It’s not a stillness, like inactivity. It’s a stillness rooted in trusting the faithfulness and power of God to empower us as we take bold steps. As well as his power to re-direct us if and when we do move into the wrong directions. Beth’s 40-day devotion, Reckless Faith: A 40 Day Journey to Saying Yes, is a practical supplement to her original memoir, Reckless Faith: Let Go and Be Lead, and offers not just insights into how Jesus has brought adventure in her own life, but also applicable ways to say yes to reckless faith in our own every day walk with Christ. “BIG STORIES GET TOLD THROUGH A BUNCH OF SMALL YES.” She also reminds us that reckless faith doesn’t always mean “high volume.” It doesn’t always look bold and loud. Your adventure is the exact, perfect one God has tailored for you. But get excited! Because where your reckless faith takes you is somewhere no one else has been before. As Beth says, “Sister, if I can do it, you can do it.”

Here’s how to teach your staff that.In this episode our hosts are here to help listeners to understand that conflict can be good, it can create new ideas, decisions or avenues for new exploration. As Beth says, the goal of conflict resolution is to have all parties involved mutually agree and to do that, she reminds listeners of the 4 S’s:Is it SAFE?Does it SERVE the community?Does it promote SELF-ESTEEM?Is it good STEWARDSHIPThe S for stewardship really encompasses the individual’s being entrusted with any given scenario, so it’s important to remember that although you may have conflict with your peer at camp, you both are working towards the common goal of making camp a better place to be. Ruby reminds us that at times as a camp Director, you will have disagreements with your staff. Furthermore, sometimes since you are the camp Director, it ultimately is your decision regardless of any influence your team may have on you. If you stick to your original idea, you will have frustrated staff. It is important to create avenues for your staff and peers to have conversations about how that decision made them feel. Emotions are part of any conflict or decision-making process, so we need to listen to our staff and most importantly, we need to admit when we are wrong.Speaking of emotions, Gabrielle reminds us that conflict builds in our minds. The longer we put off dealing with conflict, the worse it becomes. Put out the spark before it becomes a dumpster-fire. Give your staff the tools to avoid and work through drama.Summer camp staff are usually a tight-knit group. As well, the expectations of a happy go lucky summer with friends vs the hard reality of living together in community smack into each other. This type of cosmic splatter happens to any and every organization at one point or another. As leaders, it is our goal to manage that state of cosmic distraction. We work from having differences and bring our community from disruption to resolution and work to land on collaboration. Working with people is complicated, you have to set the expectations at the beginning of staff training. As Beth says, by frontloading, it is easier for your staff to reach those attainable goals. When you are faced with challenges, you can separate these in the two steps of analyzing the situation and work together to resolve issues. To do this, you can break the “views” into a quadrant so you can have a better understanding of other people's perspectives. An example of a view would be campers vs parents vs directors vs staff and dissecting each perspective and how each view can influence the outcome of your resolution. It’s not polite to talk politics.  I’m sure you’ve heard the sentiment. Especially in any kind of mixed crowd where people might disagree on the issue at hand.  We live, worship and work in diverse communities, but with politics becoming so tribal in nature, many of us simply avoid the subject. And that does a disservice to us all.  Yet we can get comfortable with being uncomfortable and do it in a grace-filled way, according to Beth Silvers, co-author of “I Think You’re Wrong (But I’m Listening): A Guide to Grace-Filled Political Conversations.”  She and Sarah Stewart Holland also co-host the Pantsuit Politics podcast. As working moms from opposite ends of the political spectrum, they regularly sit down to talk politics together.  Beth, a conservative life and business coach, spent 11 years as an attorney and then an HR executive before opening her own business. Named one of Cincinnati’s “40 under 40” business leaders and as one of Ohio’s Most Powerful and Influential Women, Beth regularly speaks to organizations about hard conversations.  She asks us to hear each other’s thoughts, to test our own beliefs against each other’s philosophies and to better appreciate our own core beliefs by having to articulate and challenge those beliefs.  As Beth says, politics is all about how we live in community with each other. And if we engage in conversation with a goal not to persuade but to be open to personal growth, we’re all better off. Find show notes for this episode and more at caringmagazine.org/podcast.

Off Camera with Sam Jones

Ever since three-year-old Beth Behrs saw Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music, she knew she wanted to become an actor. Beth’s perfectionist nature and her professional approach to the craft resulted in a driving ambition that got her into UCLA’s acting program and eventually led to her first role on network television as the co-star of the CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls.Success wasn't the answer to everything though, and it brought its own set of challenges, like navigating the gauntlet that is being an actress in Hollywood. As Beth says, “We’re told so many different things in the media about how we’re supposed to be and act. When 2 Broke Girls began, I went from having no money and working as a nanny to being on a hit television show. At some point, the schedule, the pressure, and the anxiety from all of that started to break down my body.” In order to be the best actress she could be, she had to learn how to manage stress and take care of herself.Beth soon discovered the therapeutic power of meditation, nature, and horses. She got back in touch with her inner “theater kid in pajama pants”—the person she used to be before the overwhelming social pressures of Hollywood, and with her newfound wisdom, Beth wrote a book about self-care called The Total Me-Tox. She’s the first to admit that she still has plenty of work to do, so now, in addition to acting, she’s found a new calling. “I want to empower people to be who they are and be okay with that.”Beth joins Off Camera to talk about the C that derailed her acting degree, why she’s more comfortable in a character’s skin than her own, and the audition where she was told to “cry prettier."

You will often hear me say that before you worry about the financial future of your kids, you need to make sure you’re taking care of yourself first. Think of it as another one of the talks...so now in addition to the sex talk, the drug and alcohol talk, we can add the money talk. All of these conversations must occur at every stage of your child’s development, with age-appropriate messaging that the kids can absorb. To help with your effort, this week we’re talking to Beth Kobliner, author of Make Your Kid A Money Genius (Even If You're Not): A Parents’ Guide for Kids 3 to 23. Beth Okech - Kenya Relief Medical Center & Orphanage Beth knew when she was (13) and heard the stories of how missionaries served the poor in far away countries, she wanted to be one. In 2007, she graduated from a surgical tech program and traveled to Kenya two years later for the first time. When she arrived her heart was broken by the almost unbearable poverty and the crushing lack of hope so many people endured. No access to medical care, orphaned children, and devastaing social challenges were everywhere. As Beth contemplated her next steps to take and become an Agent of Social Change, she found an opportunity to work with Kenya Relief and operate a small clinic in rural Kenya. Taking the position as director in 2011, Beth leads 16 medical teams annually who come to serve the poor, providing medical care and assistance. In addition to the medical center Beth leads, Kenya Relief also provides help to people with disabilities, water projects, and houses 98 orphaned children.  Dr. Warren Bruhl's comments  I have followed Beth's remarkable work and been awed by all she does in Kenya to help the poor, providing medical care and other programs. Working in Kenya for five years, I watch how she is able to mobilize so many people and bring a large quantity of resources to her community and shake my head, thinking, "HOW DID SHE DO THAT? BECAUSE IT'S NOT EASY!" But, Beth takes it all so casually and humbly and knows her calling. This was a great honor to interview her when she was back in the United States visiting family before she returned to her work in Kenya. Enjoy the interview with this remarkable leader from Kenya who is saving lives and truly changing the world.
