Send us a textIn this episode, occupational therapist and IBCLC Michelle Emanuel joins us to explore the hidden ways tongue-tie affects babies long before birth. She explains how oral restrictions begin in the embryo, influence fetal positioning, and impact birth outcomes including torticollis and C-sections. We dive into the anatomy of the tongue, how it connects to breathing, posture, and feeding, and why many tongue-ties remain hidden or misdiagnosed. We discuss feeding positions, tummy time, swaddling, and infant sleep, and, of course, SIDS, including airway safety, sleep surfaces, toxins, and the importance of ventral (tummy) time for development and sleep.Michelle shares insights on when a frenotomy is truly needed, the risks of unnecessary or too-early releases, and why myofunctional therapy and whole-body approaches are critical for optimal long-term outcomes. This episode is a must-listen for parents, birth professionals, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of how tongue-tie influences health even before your baby is born. Watch this episode in full video format on YouTube.Michelle's WebsiteInstagramOur Patreon Event with Michelle**********Our sponsors, Patreon, and contact info below: Needed

October is Pregnancy, Infant and Child Loss Awareness Month.  All month long we will honor our babies gone to heaven far too soon.   Have you heard of recurrent pregnancy loss? Recurrent Pregnancy Loss is defined by two or more failed pregnancies and is considered distinct from infertility. When the cause is unknown, each pregnancy loss merits careful review to determine whether specific evaluation may be appropriate, and after two or more losses, a thorough evaluation is warranted.  Today's guest experienced 5 miscarriages after having her baby girl, one being an ectopic pregnancy where she lost her fallopian tube, and then was diagnosed with secondary infertility.  Anesha Stanley's first pregnancy ended with a miscarriage in 2014. Three months later she found out she was pregnant with her rainbow baby girl, Sinai. She waited two years before trying to conceive again. In 2017 we began experiencing recurrent pregnancy losses. Miscarriage #2 on January 14, 2017. An ectopic pregnancy #3, November 1, 2017 was treated with methotrexate. Anesha went onto experience two more losses and was diagnosed with secondary infertility and tubal failure.   In this episode, Anesha takes us back to what it was like experiencing the highs of finding out she was pregnant and the lows and pain of miscarriage.  She shares how she felt after being diagnosed with secondary infertility and tubal failure, and how and why she started her non profit Keys of Hope Foundation and became a Sisters in Loss Birth & Bereavement Doula.   https://stan.store/autumnacresminipetpigs/p/preparing-for-a-new-piglet                  In this episode of The Pet Pig Podcast, Autumn takes listeners on a thoughtful exploration of one of the most common yet most misunderstood piglet behaviors: rooting. We all know piglets root for food, for warmth, or just because it's instinct — but what if there's more happening beneath the surface? What if rooting is not just a survival behavior, but also a powerful tool for bonding, comfort, and brain development?          Autumn draws fascinating connections between piglets and human infants, showing how both species use rooting, nursing, and touch to regulate emotions, build trust, and shape healthy brain chemistry. From dopamine and oxytocin — the “feel-good” chemicals of bonding — to the way gentle handling, warmth, and predictability can impact a piglet's lifelong behavior, this episode sheds light on the deeper meaning behind those tiny snouts pushing into blankets, littermates, or even your lap.          Listeners will also hear why piglets who are pulled from their mothers too early sometimes grow up a little “off” — more anxious, more demanding, or more unsettled — and how this may be linked to missing out on the natural cycle of comfort and reward that rooting provides. Autumn discusses the importance of understanding rooting not as a “bad habit,” but as a window into a piglet's emotional world, much like a human baby's cry for closeness or the comfort they find in a pacifier.         This episode is a blend of science, observation, and heart — part educational deep dive, part reflection on the universal needs we all share for safety, love, and connection. Whether you're raising a piglet, preparing to bring one home, or simply curious about the hidden science of behavior, this conversation will give you a fresh appreciation for how much is happening in those early days of a pig's life.   Autumn's Links:  Website: https://www.autumnacresminipetpigs.com/ Email: https://stan.store/autumnacresminipetpigs Educational Membership Group: https://stan.store/autumnacresminipetpigs/p/autumn-acres-educational-membership-group Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/autumnacresminipetpigs/ Facebook:  HTTP://Facebook.com/autumnacresminipetpigs Free Community: https://stan.store/autumnacresminipetpigs/p/autumn-acres-free-community YouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UCGue5Kp5AwOXkReCGPUyImA Stan Store: https://stan.store/autumnacresminipetpigs Newsletter: https://stan.store/autumnacresminipetpigsb

With nearly one in ten newborns in the US requiring care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the importance of NICUs has never been more clear. On today's episode of Raise the Line, we're shining a light on the extraordinary world of NICUs with Lindsay Howard, a veteran nurse with over 17 years of experience caring for premature and critically ill infants. She currently works in a Level IV NICU at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, one of the most advanced neonatal units in the country. “We call ourselves ‘the ER of the neonate world' because we're never full. We have to make space no matter what comes in off the street, and at the biggest medical center in the world, we see all the things,” she explains. In this enlightening conversation with host Lindsey Smith, Howard describes how advances in medicine have made it possible to provide more types of care for younger and smaller babies, creating a need for NICU nurses to develop subspecialties. In her case, Howard is on a dedicated team that handles the placement and maintenance of all central line IVs, and has earned certifications in neonatal and pediatric chemotherapy and biotherapies. “We see babies that we may not have seen before being born with cancerous tumors who need chemotherapy to try and eliminate it, or just give them more time with their family.” This is a revealing look inside the workings of a top tier NICU where you'll learn about approaches to care that support healthy neurodevelopment, how clinical staff handle the emotional challenges of the job, and how her own experience as a mother with twins needing NICU care impacted her work.  Mentioned in this episode:Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. Infants were usually placed with relatives or sometimes were placed into the foster care system.  This program offers a different path—one grounded in dignity, healing, and the belief in second chances. MCC talks with Kim Perkins, nursery program manager at  the Women's Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center (WERDCC) in Vandalia. Kim discusses the challenges and successes of the program.

Send us a textIn this podcast episode, a pediatric gastroenterologist, Pediatric GI expert Dr. Victoria Martin joins me to demystify milk intolerance in babies—what FPIAP and cow's milk protein intolerance really mean, why these diagnoses are tricky, and how families can find practical, evidence-based solutions.shares her expertise on milk intolerances in infants. Dr. Martin emphasizes the importance of supporting breastfeeding mothers, addressing misconceptions about milk allergies, and the potential benefits of early allergen exposure. Additionally, Dr. Martin and the host discuss the role of lactose intolerance, and nutritional considerations for infants. Dr. Victoria (Tori) Martin is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, Co-Director of the Pediatric Gastroenterology Section of the Food Allergy Center at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children, and Associate Program Director of the MGHfC Pediatric GI Fellowship. Her research focuses on early-life GI health, food antigens, and the infant microbiome.Key takeaways“Lactose intolerance” is not a typical infant diagnosis; infant concerns are usually protein related.Microscopic stool blood alone has limits—treat the baby, not just the test. For breastfed infants with visible blood and discomfort, consider short, targeted milk-protein elimination, then a re-challenge in ~1 month to confirm diagnosis and avoid unnecessary long-term restriction.Hypoallergenic formulas are an option; prioritize growth, feeding comfort, and family well-being.Early, safe introduction of other allergens (e.g., peanut, egg) should still proceed on schedule unless otherwise directed by your clinician.Your Child is Normal is the trusted podcast for parents, pediatricians, and child health experts who want smart, nuanced conversations about raising healthy, resilient kids. Send us a textIn this episode, we chat with Dr. Tim Nelin and Dr. Yarden Fraiman, two authors from the recently published special issue of Children on the life course implications of preterm birth. Together, they explore how inequities—both environmental and social—can shape the long-term health trajectories of preterm infants.Dr. Nelin introduces the idea of “micro” and “macro” environments, showing how factors such as air pollution, green space, violence, and neighborhood social vulnerability not only contribute to preterm birth risk but also affect infants once they leave the NICU. His research underscores how the same exposures tied to prematurity continue to drive health disparities long after hospital discharge.Dr. Fraiman focuses on ADHD as a case study of inequity across the life course. He describes the “ADHD care cascade,” illustrating how systemic bias and structural racism impact recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of ADHD among children born preterm. The conversation highlights how inequities layer over time, widening gaps in health and educational outcomes. While the challenges are significant, the discussion also points to solutions—ranging from policy interventions and community partnerships to family-centered approaches. This episode emphasizes the urgent need to think upstream, addressing the drivers of inequity to create meaningful change for preterm infants and their families.Support the showAs always, feel free to send us questions, comments, or suggestions to our email: nicupodcast@gmail.com. Send us a textIn this episode, Dr. Daphna Barbeau sits down with Dr. Richard Shaw (Stanford University) and Dr. Soudabeh Givrad (Weill Cornell Medical College), child psychiatry experts and co-authors of Neurodevelopmental, Mental Health, and Parenting Issues in Preterm Infants. Their conversation shines a spotlight on the often-overlooked intersection of prematurity, neurodevelopment, and family mental health.Dr. Givrad explains how the rapid brain growth that normally occurs late in pregnancy makes preterm infants especially vulnerable to stress, pain, separation, and environmental influences in the NICU. She and Dr. Shaw outline the higher risks for challenges in cognition, language, and motor development, while emphasizing opportunities for early interventions that can positively shape outcomes. The discussion then turns to “infant mental health” and the ways relationships in the early years set the stage for emotional regulation, social development, and resilience. Both guests highlight how parental trauma, PTSD, depression, and anxiety affect not only caregivers' well-being but also how they interact with and raise their children. Concepts such as vulnerable child syndrome, overprotection, and parental guilt are explored in depth.Ultimately, this episode underscores why supporting parental mental health is as essential as any medical treatment—because how parents experience and process the NICU journey profoundly shapes the lifelong health and development of their children. Additionally, we delve into the significance of saints’ relics and the complexities of baptismal regeneration. Join The CA Live Club Newsletter: Click Here Invite our apologists to speak at your parish! Visit Catholicanswersspeakers.com Questions Covered: 02:45 – Some Protestants don't believe in infant baptism, what does that tell us about their understanding of sin and how does that compare to the Catholic view? 12:16 – I understand the Catholic teaching on cremated remains is to not separate them. But if that's the case, why do we have cases where certain saints' body parts are in different locations? It seems like that contradicts the policy on cremated remains. 20:20 – How do Catholics understand Purgatory in light of Hebrews 9:27? 24:44 – How do you determine what a saint is a patron of? Like how does someone become patron saint if pilots when airplanes weren't even invented yet when they lived? 34:45 – Can you comment on the different translations of Luke 1:28, why Protestant Bibles say “greetings o favored one” and why Catholic bibles say “hail full of grace”? 44:45 – What is the Catholic interpretation of 1 John 5:1 with regard to baptismal regeneration? I'm struggling to square “if you believe you've been born of God” with having to be baptized. 51:50 – I practice no meat on Fridays. How do I keep up this practice during times when there are lots of feast days or solemnities on Fridays?
