This episode of the Healthy Family Project podcast is all all about how to shop for organic foods. We're joined by Sally Kuzemchak, our official registered dietitian and author of RealMomNutrition.com. Sally dispels the myths and breaks down everything you need to know about buying organic. You can't walk into a grocery store without seeing all sorts of labels making bold health claims including organic labels on fresh and packaged foods. There is a lot of confusion among shoppers around what the organic label means, does organic equal healthy, and what nutrition information should actually be taken into account when making food purchases. As Sally notes "organic cookies are still cookies" and shoppers should not be duped into thinking organic always means the food item is healthy. Sally breaks down the meaning of organic when it comes to food labels, what we should know about the dirty dozen list, and what food items to prioritize when it comes to deciding between conventional and organic. The phrase “money can’t buy happiness,” has been around awhile and for good reason. Even after people have achieved wealth, many are still looking for ways to achieve a joyful life. Sally Glick, today’s guest, talks about finding happiness. Sally started her career by working with her father, a CPA sole practitioner in Chicago, during a time when firms didn’t yet have logos and brands. What they did have was white stationary with black ink. They were located in the downtown Chicago area. They didn’t know the words thought leaders and center of influence but that was exactly what they did. They stayed in front of their clients and helped them. The major trick she learned was to always put herself on the other side of the table so she could understand what her clients and prospects needed, from their perspective. Overcoming interruptions As Sally has experienced interruptions, her reactions depended on from whom the interruption was coming. If she’s put in a situation where she can’t pause the interruption, she lets it go and thanks them for making a great point. She then continues from where she left off. In a more informal situation, however, she tells them to hold their thought for a minute and let her finish speaking first. Happiness matters Happiness matters because people who are happier are also healthier. If you want to be healthy, seek happiness. Finland has won The Happiest Place on Earth for three consecutive years. The main cause is because people there have deep social networks. When people feel connected, they don’t feel ignored, overlooked, and marginalized. When you’re happy and satisfied, you can do more for others. You can be magnanimous and charitable, as well as forgiving and empowering. Sally learned from all the studies she’s read that there’s no direct correlation between happiness and other factors such as money, material possessions, education, gender, or even physical attractiveness. Studies show that relationships are what make people happy. It’s the ability to form deep and meaningful connections with other people. The more good relationships you have, the happier you are. Money can't buy happiness but it can make life so much easier. There are certain basic necessities that need to be addressed for you to feel complete but once those necessities are met, you don’t need more to be happy. When you’re listening to someone, there’s a difference between finding common ground to talk about and taking over the conversation to the point of not acknowledging their story. “You Can't Buy Happiness -- So How Do You Achieve a Joyful LIfe?” episode resources Follow Sally Glick on LinkedIn. We are all unique and everyone is different. We possess wonderfully unique qualities that differentiate us from others. Some of us are dealing with disabilities that also make us different from others. Having a disability can be extremely challenging because of the way the outside world treats and views us. Today, Ashley is talking with Stenetta Anthony, author of "A Home for Sally" an authentic book that is opening the dialogue about disability and societal value placement. In this book, we look at the concept of disability with regard to Sally who is missing a paw. Sally is awaiting being adopted. As Sally awaits adoption, she watches how the other puppies that came in the adoption facility at the same time as her are all adopted except her. Eventually, Sally is adopted by a wonderful family who loves Sally. This book applies to the human experience of being disabled and how people stare, overlook, or ignore because of their own judgment, fear, or insecurities dealing with others. Sometimes people lack empathy and understanding because they haven't had to deal with something of this magnitude. Stenetta, a veteran educator, has been instilling solid ideals within all of her students for twenty plus years. Sally's story will warm your heart and articulates what we people go through with disabilities.
In this episode Sally talks about time and how it can sometimes appear to pass incredibly quickly and on other occasions crawl by like lazy snail. She talks about watching her children grown up and realising that years have gone by without them really seeming to make an imprint and she wonders what she did with the time. Did she really use it and honour it? Or did she squander it?As Sally celebrates another birthday she is also reminded that another year has passed, and she reminisces about her experiences over the last year.Ultimately she proposes that time could be infinitely bendy and flexible, and that if we could stay truly in the present we could live in a magical world where time stood still, and we would never have to worry about not having enough time. Why not spend some time with Sally now, listen in and see what you think of her idea? The Impossible Burger. The Beyond Burger. Lab meat. All of these are touted as healthy alternatives to the real deal: a beef burger. Today, Sally Fallon Morell, the head of the Weston A. Price Foundation makes a case for including animal products in our diet. As Sally goes over the highlights from the fall Wise Traditions journal, she goes in-depth, explaining why pseudo meat is a poor substitute for real meat. Their cheap and highly-processed ingredients (including soy, pea protein, artificial flavorings, and colorings) make for an unhealthy choice for us and for the planet. In this episode, Sally also touches on the importance of mitochondrial health, “gentle cooking,” and the dangers of ultrasound technology and even microwave ovens. The conversation, overall, is a solid reminder of why we need to return to real foods and natural approaches for cultivating good health. Ever wondered what it's like to be raised, work in and live a life that is only military?Imagine being a single woman, who has her own career inside a very masculine industry.Sitting in meetings where you are the only woman with 20-50 men?Intimidating much?Perhaps, but what if it was everything you wanted to do and more. This fortnight's episode I sit down with Sally - she grew up in a military family, married a military member (later divorced) and eventually became part of the organisation herself.Imagine everyone knowing your partners (if they're inside as well) and the real possibility of having to work with them later down the track. This is not an uncommon story. It is a life that no one truly knows about unless they're in it or they've married into it. As Sally states - she only knows, or doesn't have any associations with anyone who isn't, connected to the military in some shape or form.Think about it - you move every 2, 3 or 4 years, sometimes one, depending on where you're needed. You get, or your loved one, could be sent overseas for months on end. What do you do with your house? Your pets? Your life? What is it like to be deployed? And what happens when you return? Does life ever go back to normal? Or is it forever changed?Listen to this episode to find out what kind of person it takes to live in this world. It certainly isn't for the faint-hearted.This is Sally. Arohanui, Briar
“People have some of the richest, most exciting experiences outdoors, and it’s hard for them to leave” - Sally Johnson Sally Johnson is the senior manager of events marketing at REI, and the leader of a very exciting project from REI, Outessa. Outessa is an event that gives women the chance to experience the outdoors, to form relationships and bonds with other women who appreciate and enjoy the outdoors, and to have the experience of understanding themselves better through their time in the outdoors. As Sally explains, a lot of women have had the experience of initially coming to the outdoors through some male figure, whether it is a brother, father, spouse, or someone else. But Outessa is working to give women ownership of the outdoor experience, as themselves, and the opportunity to form true and lasting relationships with other women who share their passion for the outdoors. In a time where commitments pile up, stress builds up, the world seems like a crazier and crazier place, giving women the chance to unwind for a moment, have these experiences, and truly build community among themselves is Outessa’s mission. Bulletpoints A lot of women have a hard time allowing themselves to really enjoy the outdoors. There’s something holding them back There’s a lot of women who want to be in the outdoors more, all we have to do is open up access When women spend time outdoors, it can be incredible time to get to know themselves better A lot of women come to the outdoors through a man, whether father, brother, spouse, etc, and it’s important that they discover and reframe their experience and relationship with the outdoors as themselves Women who appreciate and take advantage of the outdoors form very strong bonds and community with each other REI and Outessa is trying to reframe of the story of the outdoors, with women being a central component There is a strong desire among women in general today to do their own adventures, and Outessa is a response to that desire REI believes that a life outdoors is a life well-lived The moments when we are outdoors can be life-savers, and keep us going in the rest of our lives and whatever is difficult Links Outessa.com REI.com
As Sally looks at this story she reflects about how this is about Daniel, orphans, sons, lions, Jesus, the Israelites and us. She asks us to consider how we respond to God when our relationship with Him is tested.

My name is Darren Rowse. Today, I want to talk about Blogger's Block. In fact, this is the start of a miniseries on the topic of blogger's block. It all came about because Sally emailed me. Sally shot me an email just a couple of days ago. She asked me this question, "Darren, do you have any tips for bloggers with blogger's block? I really want to take my blog to the next level in 2016, but I'm completely stuck. Every time I sit down to write, nothing comes, and the more that happens, the more stressed I feel and the less it seems to flow." Sally, you are not alone in your blogger's block. It's something that affects all of us as bloggers at one time or another and I've had many bouts of it over the years. So today and in the coming episodes, I want to share a few different tips and to help you to tackle it from a number of different directions. You can find today's show notes at problogger.com/podcast/83 where you can also subscribe to the ProBlogger PLUS newsletter. It's just a simple newsletter that I send out every week, usually on a Tuesday or a Wednesday, depending on what part of the world you're in. It has our latest podcast episodes, but also anything else that I've produced over the week, including blog posts, periscopes, and other live streaming. There's also the occasional promotion of a new ebook that we might be producing or one of our events, but it's largely just updates of content from ProBlogger. You can subscribe to those show notes. Again, it's at problogger.com/podcast/83. Let's get into talking about blogger's block. As Sally says, a blogger's block is something that really does hit us as bloggers at different times. It can be incredibly frustrating and I feel that frustration in Sally's email. She actually went on to write a little bit more about the problem she was having and I really relate to it. It's why I put aside the other podcasts that I had planned for the next few weeks to really tackle it because it's something that I know impacts a lot of us. Particularly it can be frustrating at this time of year when we're in January and we're excited about taking a blog to the next level, but it's just not flowing and we can't make it flow. So today, I want to talk a little bit about different types of blogger's block. In the coming episodes,
As Sally's team draws up their plans, the other Ian reveals a force on Earth previously unknown to the group. But are they friend of foe?
As Sally gathers her team in preparation for her new mission there is a strong sense that what is happening in Szzzyyyxx space has far greater implications than previously thought.
Sally and her party make contact with 5186a, a former slave of the Masters, who now leads a growing revolt against them. The mysterious Benefactor, however, is not providing them with sophisticated weapons for their cause, though he is teaching her more about Earth than could be expected. As Sally talks with her, however, it appears the alliance between the former slaves and the Benefactor is far from secure.
As Sally begins her long journney home, she has time to contemplate the question of the fate of the Ultrablitz. As she begins to explore the story of the mission, a critical clue comes to light. But does she have the right to interfere with history?
As Sally prepares for her trial, she and Jackie compare notes on what the mysterious alien found onboard the ship might have looked like. We also learn more of Travis's original mission and what happened when they engaged their mysterious funnel initiator.
As Sally prepares her crew for the coming of night on the Roanoke, it becomes clear that Ian will not be enjoying the celebrations. For him, return to night means return to humanity. But, what will he be willing to do to avoid it? And what is behind Maxwell's new found interest in him?
As Sally tries to convince Ian not to remain in the alien environment when they leave for Earth, she contronts Rachel, who apparently has a novel way of dealing with Swipe once and for all, but Sally must help. But this final act of mercy may come at a significant cost.
As Sally completes her initial treatment of Anderson she is informed by Ian that they are not allowed to leave the planet as planned. Apparently they have a new adversary on Earth who is taking a personal interest in the mission. Meanwhile, Vlad continues his hidden personal agenda. But things get worse when Anderson wakes up!
Sally Kempton - Religion in the Modern World. Part 3. Designer Spirituality or Discipline Disaster? click here for free sample! (right-click to download) A deceptively profound and skillful pioneer in more Integral forms of spirituality explores what the future of spiritual practice might look like, and perhaps even more importantly, who is going to teach it—the narcissistic offspring of boomers and modern culture, or the growing number of young stars shooting for an ever-brighter tomorrow? Who: Sally Kempton, also known as Swami Durgananda, is among the most dynamic, insightful, and sought-after teachers of Siddha Yoga, and is author of the celebrated guide to spiritual practice, The Heart of Meditation: Pathways to a Deeper Experience. Summary: Sally Kempton is one of the most extraordinary pioneers in more integral, comprehensive forms of spiritual teaching—but my oh my, she’ll be the first to tell you it isn’t always easy, for her or her students! For anyone walking around the modern spiritual marketplace, one of the largest challenges is simply not knowing what the “right” thing to do is anymore. With unprecedented access to all the great Wisdom Traditions from across the world, one is left with several very difficult questions. For students, which tradition should I pick—or should I pick more than one? For teachers, should I continue to pass on my spiritual knowledge in the way it was passed on to me—or should I add in some complimentary techniques from other traditions? This is an exploration requiring equal parts courage and humility, and it’s about this journey of exploration that Sally and Ken discuss, in nuance, with passion, and always with humor. Who will be the next generation of teachers of explicitly Integral spirituality, in each tradition, or as a tradition in itself? Who is going to train those teachers in the first place? Will the teachers of tomorrow help personalize spiritual practice to each person, a kind of “designer spirituality,” or will they forget entirely the importance of discipline, and simply have a bunch of “designer egos” walking around instead? Can teachers of today and tomorrow hold both “unique fit” and discipline in their minds simultaneously? As Sally and Ken discuss, studies have shown that the twenty-somethings of today are even more narcissistic than their boomer parents (a rather frightening achievement), and yet within that generation is an eerily high number of young people who seem to have shot right to the top of the evolutionary wave, and are ready to keep riding higher! So what on earth does that mean for the future of spirituality? A bunch of “be-here-now,” don’t worry about practice, you’re already enlightened so just go play video-games teachers? Or a crop of teachers looking to synthesize and integrate the best that the traditions have to offer, within a framework that understands developmental structures, ever-present spiritual states, but also understands that those higher states won’t stick without diligent practice? At the leading-edge of consciousness, where these questions are being pondered from an Integral view by both teachers and students, we are the ones who have to answer our own deepest questions, through trial and error, with support from others on the same path of discovery, and with the courage to let the exhilarating birthing pains of a more Integral form of spirituality come into the world through you. Why would anyone embark upon such a path? Because their own Highest Self is telling them “walk this way.” It is the call of Eros and evolution itself, which is precisely and only the gesture of Spirit-in-Action—your own I AMness asking you, personally, to help divine truth shine brighter, and embrace more, than what has come before.Sound like a commitment to egoic self-aggrandizement? A Messiah complex perhaps? Not at all. Because if you truly realize what you have just devoted yourself to, humility will knock you flat. In a post-metaphysical Integral spirituality, where it is understood that consciousness evolves, those at the leading edge of consciousness evolution are literally co-creating the structure of consciousness, the world-space, into which untold numbers of others will eventually follow. So, um, don’t screw it up… and don’t let the fear of screwing up paralyze you either. Breathe, smile, and go find some friends—and teacher(s)—to help create this path together….“I’m interested in what degree of discipline this new generation of teachers is going to require from students. My teacher used to wake people up at 3AM to go meditate. It was total boot camp. That’s very hard to do in Western culture without being called authoritarian, cultish, etc….” (Click here for full dialogue.)
