Text 2W: Hello, Mr. Smith. I'm afraid Dr. Brown won't be able to see you today. He's still waiting for a flight out of New York. He said he would meet you tomorrow afternoon. Is it OK?M: Sounds good. Thank you for calling. Text 3W: David, have you saved enough for the car?M: I have $20,000 now, and the car costs $25,000. My parents said they would like to help, but I don't want to use their money. Text 4W: Dr. Block, I need to take a few days off because my father is coming over to visit. And I need to show him around the city.M: OK, Jane. But be sure to come back to work next week. Text 5M: Amy, my head is spinning! It must be a touch of the sun.W: You'd better lie back still for a while. Take it easy for the rest of the day, and stay in the shade. It's too hot today. Text 6M: Mom, this is going to take forever! Animal World will be on in 20 minutes. It's my favorite program. You know I can't miss it!W: I know, honey. But we have to wait in line to pay for these things we need.M: You promised we'd be home in time.W: Be a little patient, Jack. We'll get out of here soon.Text 7M: Hi, Samantha. Do you have a minute?W: Hi, Richard. Come in, please.M: I've been trying to get hold of you all afternoon.W: I was at the weekly managers' meeting. How are things?M: Oh, splendid. I have some news.W: Good news?M: Wonderful news…to me, anyway! I've been offered a job for three years as an assistant to Prof. Hayes from Birmingham University. I'll join him in Mexico City. What do you think about that?W: Wonderful, Richard! Just what you've always wanted, isn't it? Does it mean that you'll leave soon?M: Next week. But before I go, I'd like to invite you out for dinner — just to thank you for all the help you gave me during my three-month research work here. Would tomorrow evening be a good time for you? We can go to the Shanghai Restaurant in Chinatown.W: Fine with me. Text 8M: What's that book you just picked up, Mary?W: The one Prof. Lee uses in his course.M: Oh, I see. You'd better have it if you want to pass that course.W: But it costs $30. I simply can't afford it.M: Did you check the used book section here? Maybe they have it.W: No, they don't. I asked.M: Why don't you get it from the library?W: I've been trying for months, and it's always out. There are over 50 students in the course, and every single one wants the book.M: Listen, you know my roommate Henry, don't you? He took the same course last year, and I remember he owns a copy. I can borrow it from him for you.W: Oh, that'll be great! Thank you, Jim!text 9W: Hello?M: Hello, Stella. This is Peter.W: Hi, Peter. Fancy hearing your voice! How are you?M: Couldn't be better. I'm planning a trip to Memphis with my family this summer.W: Great! I'd love to host you here. When are you coming?M: We'll leave Boston on June 20th, stay in St. Louis, Missouri for a week, and then fly to your city. We'd probably stay for five days with you and come back, for it's a two-week vacation.W: Is there anything special you'd like to do here?M: We'd love to explore Beale Street, the official home of the blues, where we'd listen to live music. We'd also like to visit Graceland, the popular museum in memory of Elvis Presley. But above all, we want to spend some time with you and your family.W: Of course! It's been ages since we met last time. Let's have a dinner party in my garden.M: Lovely! Oh, could you find for us a hotel near where you live? It doesn't have to be big, but I can't stand noise at bedtime.W: Sure.M: Thank you. See you soon. Text 10M: Hello, everyone. My name is John. I'm the teaching assistant for this lab session. Let me explain a little about it. As you may know already, it's a required meeting once a week. I expect you to do all the experiments and keep the results in your lab notebook. I'll collect the notebooks every two weeks. You'll be graded on lab notebooks and quizzes. But the most important information I want to give you now is about safety. First of all, you must wear shoes that cover your feet in the lab. Tennis shoes are OK. Also, don't wear loose clothes, long scarves, big necklaces, or loose belts — they get caught in something or fall into liquid. Another thing to do for safety is cleaning up. Be sure to put the waste in the correct containers. We can't mix liquid with paper. This is extremely important. I don't want any fires in this room. You are responsible for washing out your own lab equipment and putting it away. If you don't do this, I will take away points from your grade. Nobody's going to clean up after you. OK, any questions?

Taking It Down is back this week! With a rundown of the episode (0:02), Blaine discusses the absence of the show (1:26). From there, they talk about Adam's upcoming tour, which stumps Blaine, and why he'll be away from the podcast (1:58). This prompts a quick talk about social media, especially TikTok, and how to contact the podcast (5:55). There, Blaine brings up the notion of how people watch TV all wrong sometimes with a brief mention of 'The Pitt' in non-spoilers (9:30). The non-spoiler section continues with an overview of 'DTF St. Louis': now that they've reached the penultimate episode, can they recommend it (15:46)? They do a midpoint check-in with the HBO series 'Rooster' (23:11) and a discussion of 'Shrinking' now that it has ended its third season (27:28). Before leaving non-spoilers, Blaine and Donovan explain why they recommend 'The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins' so often (30:48). They end the first half with ideas for next week (32:55). To begin spoilers, they start with a listener email about 'DTF St. Louis' and its surprises (35:18). Then they transition into the HBO series 'Rooster' and how it has a lot to offer from Steve Carell but even more than just him (51:41). Lastly, they close the spoilers with 'Shrinking' where they grade the ups and downs of the third season, and they determine how to weigh it as a whole season (1:01:23). What are TV shows actually doing to us?In this episode of the GoodKind Podcast, Clayton, Chris, and Amy wrestle with a surprisingly important question: when we sit down to watch a show, are we just relaxing—or are we being shaped by the stories we consume? From nostalgic sitcoms to intense dramas, television doesn't just entertain. It reflects culture, communicates values, and often invites us into a particular way of seeing the world. The conversation explores how Christians can think thoughtfully about entertainment without becoming anxious or overly restrictive. The hosts discuss setting personal “edges” around what they watch, recognizing the messages embedded in storytelling, and why common grace means good stories can still be meaningful even when they aren't told from a Christian perspective. They also turn to parenting—how kids absorb the stories they watch, why conversations about media matter, and how families can help children learn to discern what is good, true, and beautiful in the content around them.Whether you love TV or rarely watch it, this episode invites you to consider a simple question: what stories are shaping your imagination?Takeaways Television can be a form of storytelling that reflects and shapes cultural values.Entertainment can be relaxing, but it still influences how we think and see the world.Christians can thoughtfully engage culture without feeling pressure to avoid it entirely.Setting personal boundaries around themes like violence, sex, or hopelessness can help guard our attention and imagination.Asking simple questions about a show's message can help reveal the worldview behind the story.Watching media together can open meaningful conversations between spouses and friends.Kids are actively learning from the stories they watch, which makes parental guidance important.Media discernment is a skill that families can practice together over time.Chapters00:00 TV shows we love (and a friendly debate)08:08 What is actually happening when we watch TV?15:05 Entertainment, storytelling, and escape23:59 Setting boundaries around what we watch30:10 A biblical framework for media (Philippians 4:8)33:15 How stories shape us more than we realize36:27 Asking the “moral of the story” question44:00 Why Christians don't have to avoid TV entirely45:59 Parenting kids in a media-saturated world52:32 The challenge of YouTube and short-form content53:55 Final reflections: are we passive viewers?

Dogs can totally watch TV! It's not like they're flipping channels, but they can see and respond to what's on the screen. Certain shows or videos designed with high-contrast colors and movement are more dog-friendly. It's not universal, though – not all dogs are couch potatoes. It's like a personal preference thing, just like some people are into reality shows while others are all about documentaries. So, if your dog's eyeing the TV, they might be more of a movie buff than you thought!

On this week's show, Slate senior editor Rebecca Onion sits in for Julia Turner. First, the hosts examine Dahomey, an audacious new documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Mati Diop (Atlantics.) With a one hour, eight minute run time, Dahomey is an incredibly rich text in a very small package, and contemplates the repatriation of 26 royal treasures plundered from the Kingdom of Dahomey as they journey back to their homeland, which now lies within the Republic of Benin. Then, the three dive into Netflix's Death, Let Me Do My Special, a one-woman show performed and written by Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.) The special is perceptive, macabre, and whimsical, as Bloom reflects on the pandemic years and the loss of her close friend and collaborator, Adam Schlesinger. Finally, what is Mark Zuckerberg wearing? That is the question Brendon Holder asks in a recent Substack essay and that is bewildering the panel. Is the Meta CEO simply trying to beat the dweeb allegations through oversized t-shirts and a boyish haircut? Or is there something more sinister going on here?In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses the role TV plays in their lives, inspired by a recent mega-article published by GQ, “How to Watch TV.” Email us at culturefest@slate.com. The Emmy's are a tradition wherein excellence in television is honored by a long display of inartful television. Plus, Elon Musk is carelessly worsening the atmosphere around the second assassination attempt against Donald Trump. And we're joined by Judge Frederic Block of the Eastern District of New York, who has sentenced scores of defendants to long prison terms, but now the law is providing him with a means to reconsider some of those sentences. He discusses how he approaches his duties under the First Step Act in his new book, A Second Chance: A Federal Judge Decides Who Deserves It.
