Jesse Iwuji is a first-generation Nigerian-American, U.S. Navy reserve officer, college football star, and if that's not enough: an accomplished and beloved professional NASCAR driver. So, how did he become a racing star? He just … wanted it. And one day, he decided to go for it. Along the way, many people told him he'd never succeed. He didn't have the money. He didn't have the connections. No sponsorships. People even said that "African Americans don't race cars." Jesse's entrepreneurial savvy allowed him to self-fund his own outside-the-box training and compete with far more established racers. Today, he's on TV in the professional circuit, despite all the naysayers. How he got there is incredibly inspiring.

Today I'm talking with Jesse Iwuji, the first and only active US Naval Officer to compete in NASCAR and the co-owner of NASCAR team Jesse Iwuji Motorsports, which he co-owns with HOF Former-NFL player Emmitt Smith. He's also a Keynote Speaker/Motivational Speaker and a NASCAR Driver Analyst for NBC Sports. After realizing his love for sports, particularly football, Jesse started setting goals for himself to be on the A team, get recruited, and play college football. Since he didn't get to play Pee Wee and Pop Warner football, he had to put in extra effort to grow his talent, skills, strength, and ability. All his hard work paid off when he got recruited by the United States Naval Academy to play college football during his senior year. Jesse saw this as an opportunity to attend a great school, pursue his love for football, and have a career waiting for him as an officer in the US Navy when he graduates. He spent four years playing for the Naval Academy, went to four different bowl games, and had winning seasons all four years. He later became a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO), which developed his passion for cars and racing. His life changed when he finally decided to become a professional race car driver. Jesse explored every possibility, took the entrepreneur route, and started his own business on the sideline while still serving active duty. In this episode, you will learn about football, professional car racing, the importance of having a vision, what kept Jesse going in pursuing his dream, and some helpful tips on how to start living your dreams. Here are just some of the things we get into: What made Jesse loves sports and football. How Jesse realized his passion for car racing. What he did to fund his journey of learning car racing. How he worked his way up from Late Models to NASCAR K&N Pro Series. How his partnership with Emmitt Smith started. Why Listen:This is an inspirational episode. Jesse is a case study in pursuing one's dream - figuring out what unique aspirations you have, finding others to hold you accountable, and not letting the opinions or doubts of others get in your way. Jesse talks about how he used a kickstarter campaign, credit cards, and his personal savings to inch his way closer - one race at a time - to becoming  a NASCAR driver. We talk about advocating for yourself, how to run a crowdfunding campaign, and how to train day in and day out to make your dreams come true. The topics we cover in this episode are relevant to every single career path - whether you too want to become a NASCAR driver, or want to start your own business, or write a book, or whatever your personal goals may be. If you like this episode check out our show notes at BeyondTheUniform.io, where, in addition to the resources we discuss in this episode, I also list 3 other episodes very similar to this one.   About Jesse:Jesse Iwuji is the first active duty US Naval Officer to compete in NASCAR. He started out at the Naval Academy, after which he served as a Surface Warfare Officer for 7 years before transitioning to the Navy Reserves.

Purpose does not come in shades, sizes, or looks. It is a human-centric construct that deep within every Human conscious, there is this longing to live, become and fill the space called earth.Purpose is often defined by our passion, that burning desire to let out the steam of creativity expressed on different stages. It could be seen in the arts or sciences. Still, all of this is a function of our personality, and being able to understand this and apply ourselves accordingly reveals the fulfillment and satisfaction we see and feel. The love and affinity one shows towards an activity, event and happenings can reveal one's heart and inclination to that particular aspect of life and living. So we can safely use this human behavior to help and channel the energy of those around us in discovering who they are and fulfilling their purpose here. How would you describe one who has a great love for speed and is always yearning to be part of speed and its related activity? In this show episode, I have the opportunity to talk with Jesse Iwuji about his love for speed and how embracing this passion has created a future for him now.Jesse Iwuji is a NASCAR driver & Team Owner, US Naval Officer, Keynote Speaker, TV Personality, Actor, and an eSports Company Owner. His story points to the power of dreaming within the boundaries of determination, courage, sacrifice, and grit.Support the show

But he knew he couldn't do it professionally anymore after graduating college. ● He naturally gravitated toward racing because of his love for cars and the sport. ● He started joining amateur races, competing on open track days using his personal cars. Eventually, his goal turned to become a professional racecar driver. ● Jesse immediately started researching. He found that there was a racial stereotype against being black when it comes to racing. You also needed to have connections. ● However, he already had a clear vision in mind. No racial stereotype or barrier was going to stop him. [5:35] Working His Way to the Top● Jesse started at the lowest level possible in NASCAR in 2015, racing with late-model stock cars. ● Every year, he continues to work his way up. ● Now, Jesse is racing at the national level. He's only about a step or two below Bubba Wallace, who is on the highest level. ● Tune in to the full episode to hear about Jesse's next big goal! [7:18] Being Part of the Minority in NASCAR● He tries not to look at it, but the racial stereotype is apparent in their industry. ● The number of African-Americans on the pit crew side is increasing, but not on the driver side. ● Many African-American drivers are working toward the national series and NASCAR. However, it takes a lot of resources, energy, effort, and networking outside of skill. ● Unlike other sports, there is a branding and networking side in making it to NASCAR; being a good driver doesn't guarantee success. [9:22] Feeling Pressure● Jesse doesn't feel pressure about being one of the two African-Americans in NASCAR. ● Since he started late, he knows he has more to learn and experience. ● Right now, he races part-time between seasons. Once he gets all the resources in place, that's when he can run full seasons and start getting better. ● Everything is part of the process. It takes time, so you have to stay patient, keep grinding, keep your head down, and keep moving. [11:57] Dealing with Racial Stereotypes in NASCAR● It always comes as a surprise to people when Jesse tells them he's racing in NASCAR. ● They...

We are nearing the end of 2020 and to many that sparks a great deal of excitement. If you have faced a year full of obstacle course after obstacle course, you are not alone. Challenge after challenge, test after test, struggle after struggle. In the midst of all the pain, struggle, doubt, confusion it is good to remember that we only get stronger when we are put to the test. No one likes the story of the one who made it to the top by being handed everything; everyone loves the story of the underdog, the overcomer, the one who rose above the challenge, the one who went from struggle to strength.Jesse Iwuji joined Jacob Kersey to discuss going from struggle to strength in this episode. Jesse is an exemplary example of one who has overcome challenges. He played Naval Academy football, serves in the U.S. Navy, and is a professional stock car racer. Learn more about Jesse and connect with him at https://www.jesseiwuji.com/
