On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back breaking down the huge news that was released last week from the Big Ten, their Flex Protect Plus football scheduling model that will allow all 16 of the teams in the new-look B1G to play everyone in the conference at least once every two years and visit all 15 of the other venues at least once every four years. It also allows for protected rivalries that would be played every year and for the USC Trojans the obvious choices was the UCLA Bruins, keeping that long standing rivalry going. Coach Hyde talks about that new model and also what the USC football schedule will look like going forward in 2024 with the Trojans facing off against LSU in Las Vegas, home games against Notre Dame, Michigan, Iowa and Wisconsin plus a road test against Penn State. Then 2025 is fun with Georgia Southern (and potentially Clay Helton), Ole Miss, Nebraska and Penn State in the Coliseum with road games against Ohio State, Wisconsin and Notre Dame. These schedules are exciting for the fans, and Coach Hyde thinks the Big Ten did a nice job. He would like to see the conference go one step further and make sure that USC and UCLA were not hosting huge games during the same weekend 20 miles apart. He would like to see that schedule alternate so the Rose Bowl hosts a Big Ten game one weekend then the Coliseum hosts one the following weekend. Overall he thinks these huge games will help both USC and UCLA recruit nationally and generate a lot more exposure for both brands. Coach also gives his thoughts on the shocking departure of Mike Bohn, a move he feels will impact the entire athletic department. Bohn and Brandon Sosna were the guys who brought in Lincoln Riley and now both of them are gone. With the success Riley has already had, is will be up to USC to bring in an athletic director that will work with Riley and get on the same page, not the other way around. Football drives the bus and USC needs to bring in a great leader and administrator, but also one that knows the football program is already rolling in the right direction and can't be derailed. I've got some recruiting notes, including updates on a few Trojan prospects and commits from the Long Beach Tournament of Champions 7-on-7 event. Plus some feedback from coaches and players as to why the Trojans struggle to recruit elite defensive players. I continue the USC athletic director situation following Mike Bohn's resignation last Friday. Is it a blessing in disguise? The timing might be right for a change as the school transitions to the B1G Conference. And the most ridiculous top-25 QB list from ESPN ever put together is discussed. #usc #TROJANS #FOOTBALL #MikeBohn #recruiting #Offensiveline #Recruiting #LincolRiley #nil #top5 #linebackers #widereceivers #calebwilliams #defensiveline #depthchart #pac12football #defense # impact #mvp #transferportal #nfldraft #basketball #ncaa Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are back together talking about the rather abrupt resignation of USC athletic director Mike Bohn. Friday seemed like it would be a relatively slow news day in the world of college football until the LA Times reported that Bohn has sent his his resignation letter and would stepping down immediately as head of the Trojans athletic department. That was followed shortly after by an acceptance of the resignation letter by USC president Carol Folt, stating that he would no longer be the athletic director as of that day and they would put together a temporary leadership plan while they kick off a national search for a new AD. The guys talk about what both Bohn and Folt said in their statements as well as supportive statements from head football coach Lincoln Riley and head basketball coach Andy Enfield. They also discuss what they have heard about this major shift in the USC athletic department and talk about why Bohn left the job and the department in a much, much better place than he found it when he was hired in 2019. As far as replacement candidates go, the guys would like to see someone with athletic director experience at a major college program this time around. Four years ago USC's athletic department was in shambles with all of the bad hires and scandals and it would have been tough to hire any sitting Power Five AD. Now the department is in amazing shape with most of the sports excelling and the program moving to the greener pastures of the Big Ten, so getting a sitting Power Five AD shouldn't be a problem. In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods return to talk about the newly released Pac-12 annual revenue numbers that while came in at record levels, are still dead last among the Power Five conferences with a $21 million gap per school between the Big Ten. The guys talk about what those numbers mean and how that gap is only going to increase with the new SEC and Big Ten media deals kicking in next year. The guys also talk about the latest on the Pac-12 media rights front including interviews by Washington State president Kirk Schulz and Arizona State athletic director Ray Anderson, giving two very different timeline estimations for when this deal will finally get done. There is also a deadline looming if the Pac-12 wants to add San Diego State for the 2024 season, as the SDSU exit fee of $17 million to the Mountain West will triple on July 1. Plus the Pac-12 is making some changes to enhance the television product for football games including putting microphones on players and coaches pregame and interviews with head coaches during games and the new proposed California legislation that would allow football athletes to share athletic department revenue. At the very end of the podcast news broke that USC athletic director Mike Bohn was resigning. The guys give their quick reaction to this out of the blue story with the Trojan athletic department now in search of new leadership with a move to the Big Ten on the horizon. Hello, and welcome to the Women Leaders podcast! I'm Patti Phillips, CEO of Women Leaders in College Sports. A few weeks ago, we attended one of college sport's biggest event: the college football national championship in Los Angeles! In partnership with the College Football Playoff, Women Leaders hosted a panel and reception at the Grammy Museum. I sat down with four industry leaders including: Gloria Nevarez, Commissioner of the Mountain West Conference, Desiree Reed-Francois, Athletic Director at the University of Missouri, Diana Sabau, Deputy Commissioner & Chief Sports Officer at the Big Ten, and Mike Bohn, the Charles Griffin Cale Director of Athletics at the University of Southern California. This panel did not disappoint...we discuss why football continues to take up so much of the conversation within college athletics, the obstacles and biases that have prevented women from leading athletic departments with prominent football programs (although that is slowly changing), and how we can leverage the power of football to help move us forward. Let's jump right into the conversation and remember, we are Women Leaders!
Exactly one year ago today USC athletic director Mike Bohn shocked the college football world and hired head coach Lincoln Riley away from Oklahoma. What a difference a year makes, going from 4-8 to 11-1 with a shot at the Pac-12 Championship, the College Football Playoffs and a Heisman Trophy winner. Coach Harvey Hyde gives his thoughts on the quick and decisive turnaround Riley has made for this Trojan football program, capped by the controlling 38-27 victory over rival Notre Dame Saturday night in the Coliseum. Coach Hyde talks about the huge national exposure this USC football team is receiving with fans excited and alumni fired up about the program, right where he thinks the Trojans should be. For the second week in a row Hyde loved the way this USC defense was able to take away the soul of both the UCLA and Notre Dame programs, running the football. The defense played hard and fast and forced both the Bruins and the Irish to play outside of their comfort zone instead of relying on their bread and butter, run-first mentality. Once again the Trojans were able to take care of the ball and force turnovers, doing just enough to allow the offense to keep ND in the distance. Speaking of the offense, quarterback Caleb Williams continues to mystify and frustrate opposing defenses by showing off his moves and abilities and having fun while he's doing it. Coach Hyde loves that this offense believes it can run the football now and thinks Austin Jones is a great back who runs hard and it really hard to stop. Williams has proven himself to be the most important player in the country when it comes to his team winning and Hyde thinks he is a lock to become USC's eighth Heisman Trophy winner. Looking ahead to Friday night in Las Vegas Coach Hyde thinks USC is a different team now and that the Trojans have come together as a program. The game with Utah in Salt Lake City should be very different than the Pac-12 Championship Game in Las Vegas and Coach Hyde wants to see USC try and take away the Utes ground game and of course limit tight end Dalton Kincaid's contributions this time around. In this episode of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde talk about the Trojans kicking off USC Fall Camp and what they would like to see accomplished by Lincoln Riley and his coaching staff. They start off the show going over the latest news, with the USC athletic department making a new hire. Big 12 executive associate commissioner Ed Stewart, a former All-American and national championship winning linebacker from Nebraska, joins Mike Bohn's department as Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director for Football Administration. They also acknowledge the enshrinement of Tony Boselli into the NFL Hall of Fame, USC's 14th NFL Hall of Famer, the most by any program. Boselli was the No. 2 overall pick in 1995 and the first ever pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Turning to fall camp, Coach Hyde talks about this team coming together and becoming an entirely new family. He loves that the squad is having early practices in the Coliseum, giving the players and coaches an opportunity to connect with the great tradition of the program and workout on the field that created so many legends (like Boselli). He wasn't as fond of some of the early morning practices, but Riley told us this week it was a good opportunity to mix things up for the players and sometimes getting your work done early opens up the rest of the day for other activities. The big question for Hyde is how Riley can change the face of the program so quickly, something that will be difficult to do but needs to be done. He says that on the practice field it won't just be the coaches evaluating the players, it will be the players evaluating each other. It should ramp up competition for spots on the depth chart and according to the coach, “Everyday is game day because you will be competing for your job.” The guys also talk about the increased depth on the team, allowing Riley to have the best players go against the best players in practice, ramping up the competition in the workouts. The guys chat about the type of player the Trojans are getting in Raymond plus have recruiting updates from the Overtime OT7 passing tournament in Las Vegas and the first of two USC Elite Camps held on campus. Sticking with recruiting, they talk about a few of the official visitors that made it to USC over the weekend. They also discuss USC chief of staff Brandon Sosna departing for the Detroit Lions, some of the interesting things athletic director Mike Bohn said during Ryan's one-on-one interview with him, what Riley said during his one-on-one interview with CBS college football reporter Dennis Dodd and lots more. This week on the Peristyle Podcast host Ryan Abraham is mixing it up with a mini-solo show where he talks about the breaking news that USC Chief of Staff Brandon Sosna, the architect of the Lincoln Riley hire according to AD Mike Bohn, is leaving the Trojans for a front office job with the Detroit Lions. Sosna made many, many improvements around the athletic department and he will be missed, but he is certainly leaving USC in a much better place than where he found it. Ryan also talks about the three Trojans that are on the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame ballot, safety Mark Carrier, running back Reggie Bush and offensive guard Jeff Bregel. The show ends with a very special guest, athletic director Mike Bohn joining Ryan on Tunnel Vision talking about a variety of USC related topics including the departure of his right hand man Brandon. Bohn talks about being USC's first ever Football Bowl Subdivision Athletics Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the changing landscape of college football and the upcoming Pac-12 media rights deal, keeping up in the facilities race (in football and all sports), extending basketball coach Andy Enfield, making a change with the baseball staff and lots more.
