Ohio 7th District Race Tightens as Max Miller Faces Abuse Allegations and Bernie Moreno Stays Silent

Ohio's 7th Congressional District was rated Solid Republican. It is not anymore. This week the Purple Political Breakdown Ohio Edition covers the race almost nobody outside Ohio was watching, and the reasons it moved. Congressman Max Miller is facing domestic abuse allegations from his former wife, Emily Moreno, who is the daughter of Republican Senator Bernie Moreno. Miller denies the allegations and has filed a defamation suit. No charges were filed in the police matter that made the records public. Those are allegations, they are not findings, and this episode labels them that way while covering the documented court record and the measurable political effect on a district Donald Trump carried by eleven points. Also in this episode: Ohio counties sold record amounts of residents delinquent property tax debt to investors who can collect at up to eighteen percent interest, and a bipartisan bill to stop it. The two billion dollars in state and local sales tax exemptions that went to data center operators in a single year, and why Ohio lawmakers walked away from the vote to change it. Where Amy Acton and Vivek Ramaswamy actually stand on data centers and property taxes. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur voting yes on HR 2616 and the backlash from her own base. Temporary protected status ending for Haitians and what it means for the Clark County workforce. And the two Ohio Supreme Court seats on your November ballot that will get almost no advertising and will outlast the next governor. Segments include Statehouse Watch, District Watch on Ohio 9, County of the Week on Clark County, the deep dive on Ohio 7, and Research on a Dime on the Ohio Supreme Court. urple Political Breakdown, hosted by Radell Lewis. Political Solutions Without Political Bias. The Supreme Court struck down this administration's tariffs. So it found a different law and taxed 99.4 percent of everything America imports anyway. A federal judge blocked the order rewriting how you get a mail ballot. So it went to the Supreme Court, and the Postal Service started building the portal regardless. OpenAI sealed two AI models in a sandbox to test whether they could hack. The models picked the lock and hacked a real company on the way out. Nobody in this episode broke a rule. Everybody found a way around one. That is the thread. This week we launch a new opening segment, What Has Trump Said This Week, going straight to the tape on the fourth term comments and the Netanyahu remarks. NUANCED NEWS: The tariff sequence nobody is explaining. Three different legal authorities in six months producing nearly the same outcome, each time a court closed a door. Section 301 after Section 122 after the Supreme Court struck the original Liberation Day tariffs. Then the same authority aimed at the European Union one day later over the Google antitrust fine, and a lawsuit filed by Friday afternoon. Plus the mail ballot executive order reaching the Supreme Court with a response due August 3, two federal appeals courts splitting on ripeness in the same week, and the postal portal getting built anyway. Plus the OpenAI containment breach, including the detail almost nobody reported: when OpenAI tried to defend against its own attacking agent, another American lab's safety guardrails made its model useless, so the defense ran on an open source Chinese model. RESEARCH ON A DIME: Jay Clayton, confirmed Director of National Intelligence 51 to 47, and the surveillance law nobody will vote on. Section 702 of FISA has been dead since June 12. It is not being debated on its merits. It is collateral. And on July 10, the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act became law without a presidential signature for the same reason. Same bill. Two hostages. Then Michigan's Senate primary, the 36 million dollars in outside spending, and the 16.8 million from a group that does not have to say who funds it until after you vote. BREAKDOWN IN THE PUBLIC: Is it actually harder now, or does it just feel that way? New Pew data on how young adults see homeownership, education, savings, and jobs, the Minneapolis Fed's argument that we may be measuring American homeownership 12 points wrong, and an honest steel-man of the case that the whole gerontocracy frame is a misdirection. GOOD NEWS: States are revoking data center tax breaks after residents connected their power bills to the building down the road. Solar hit a quarter of all EU electricity for the first time. And a Stanford Medicine trial has kids with multiple food allergies eating full servings safely. A Leftist on Israel, AIPAC, and the Democratic Party Civil War Tearing the Left Apart

What's the bigger threat to America right now: Israel's influence on U.S. politics, or Trump and MAGA itself? I sat down with a leftist creator (Cousin Ali on TikTok, Project Socio on YouTube) to dig into a tweet I put out that got people fired up, and to actually have the conversation instead of a shouting match. He makes the case that AIPAC's money and influence over Congress and the presidency, including Trump's Iran policy, makes Israel's lobby a uniquely dangerous force in American politics, one he argues is more entrenched and harder to challenge than MAGA on its own. I push back where I think the comparison breaks down, we talk about the far right turn in Israel's own government (Ben-Gvir and company), the growing divide inside the Democratic party over AIPAC-aligned candidates, and where healthcare policy (public option versus Medicare for All) fits into the bigger picture of what the American left can actually deliver. This is a solutions-focused, nonpartisan conversation. My guest's views are his own, and I bring my own pushback throughout, we don't always land in the same place, and that's the point. Ohio's governor race just got a new label. Cook Political Report moved Ramaswamy vs. Acton from Lean Republican to Toss Up, and Ohio's largest police union broke decades of habit to endorse a full Republican statewide ticket for the first time in recent memory. This episode covers both, plus the ten Ohio House seats that could decide whether Republicans keep veto proof control of Columbus. In this episode: the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio endorses Vivek Ramaswamy, Jon Husted, and Keith Faber for Attorney General, its first Republican AG endorsement in twenty years. Statehouse Watch covers the Ohio EPA's reversal on data center wastewater permits and the ten House Republican seats Democrats are targeting to break the sixty seat supermajority. District Watch breaks down Ohio's 14th (David Joyce vs. Maria Jukic) and 15th (Mike Carey vs. Don Leonard) congressional districts. County of the Week looks at Summit County's House Districts 31 and 35. Research on a Dime digs into a new KFF poll on who Americans actually think is committing Medicaid fraud, and how it lines up against Republican Attorney General messaging in Ohio's race between Keith Faber and John Kulewicz. Plus: the billionaire money behind Ramaswamy's super PAC, Victors Not Victims, which has raised thirty seven million dollars from a small group of billionaire donors, more than eighty eight percent of its total funding. This week on Purple Political Breakdown, Radell Lewis breaks down a night where every major American institution seemed to bend under pressure at once. The Iran war didn't end, it got worse. After the June ceasefire collapsed, the US and Iran have traded strikes across the region, eighteen American service members have died since February, and Congress is now being asked to approve $87.6 billion more to keep funding it, all while Trump quietly approved a 30-year nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia in the middle of the fighting. Back home, attorney general nominee Todd Blanche confirmed a settlement that permanently bars the IRS from auditing Trump's own tax returns, Mahmoud Khalil filed a lawsuit accusing senior administration officials of using an 1871 law written to stop the Klan to target protesters, and a federal appeals court ended 60 years of desegregation oversight in Louisiana at the DOJ's own request. Then there's the elections themselves. The Election Assistance Commission just lost its entire bipartisan leadership four months before the midterms, and Trump gave a primetime speech claiming newly declassified documents prove foreign election interference. Radell read the actual documents and breaks down what they really say, and don't say, about China, Russia, and the 2020 election. Plus new Senate developments out of Maine and South Carolina, a fresh look at Arizona's governor race, a deep dive into why the public trusts both political parties less than ever, and why the conservative backlash to Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey turned out to have nothing to do with what audiences actually thought when they showed up. We close things out, as always, with some good news: a record-breaking rescue operation in China, a promising new Alzheimer's treatment, 3D-printed organs manufactured in space, and humpback whales making a stunning comeback off the coast of Brazil. Ohio just landed at number one on CNBC's 2026 list of the best states for business, the first time it has ever finished first. In this Ohio Edition of the Purple Political Breakdown, Radell Lewis follows the money and the power lines behind that ranking, and breaks down who is actually on your 2026 ballot in Ohio's 11th and 12th Congressional Districts. We get into Elon Musk's five million dollar check to V PAC: Victors, Not Victims, the super PAC backing Vivek Ramaswamy, and the billionaire donors behind its nearly forty two million dollar haul (Jeff Yass, Ratmir Timashev, Bill Ackman, and Ross Stevens). Plus Ramaswamy's twenty five million dollar loan to his own campaign, the Secretary of State flag on more than five hundred thousand dollars in unitemized spending, Amy Acton's small-dollar contrast, and Sherrod Brown breaking with the building trades to hit Jon Husted over data centers in the Senate race. Statehouse Watch covers the three hundred fourteen million dollars Ohio has made leasing public land to fracking, the new college syllabus rules under Senate Bill 1, the Medicaid anti-fraud law Senate Bill 315, and the Rooster case, where blogger D.J. Byrnes faces an October jury trial over an image texted to State Senator Jerry Cirino. County of the Week is Allen County and Lima, where Google's five hundred million dollar data center has neighbors up in arms. District Watch, so you know who you are voting for: Ohio 11 (Cleveland): incumbent Democrat Shontel Brown versus Republican Mike Kirchner, with independent Cortney Peterson also on the ballot. Ohio 12 (central and eastern Ohio): incumbent Republican Troy Balderson versus Democrat Jerrad Christian, a 2024 rematch. Plus the latest AARP poll showing tight Governor and Senate races, and Ohio's nation-leading drop in Affordable Care Act enrollment after enhanced subsidies expired. The United States is bombing Iran for a fourth straight night, Senator Lindsey Graham is dead and his Senate seat went to his sister, the agency that certifies your voting machines just got emptied by email, and a text message that would not admit it was a bot tried to move Radell's opinion on Israel. The thread tonight is one question: who actually gets to decide, and who is being kept out of the room? In this episode of Purple Political Breakdown: Iran and the Strait of Hormuz: the June memorandum collapsed, the strikes and the naval blockade are back, oil is near 85 dollars, and the White House position keeps reversing faster than it can be reported. Why the missing story is not the policy, it is the absence of one. Lindsey Graham: the senator's death, the appointment of his sister Darline Graham Nordone to the seat on the President's recommendation, and an honest look at the record, including the 2016 Merrick Garland blockade and the 2020 Amy Coney Barrett confirmation eight days before the election. The Election Assistance Commission: what this quiet agency actually does for your vote, why firing every commissioner months before a midterm matters, and the receipts that connect it to the SAVE Act, the DOGE and True the Vote data deal, the ERIC exodus, and the CISA cuts. Breakdown in the Public: the "Friends for Peace" texts Radell received, traced by reporters to Brad Parscale's firm and a nine million dollar Israeli Foreign Ministry contract, plus fresh polling on where American opinion on Israel actually stands. What would you actually change about American government if you could? On this bonus episode of Purple Political Breakdown, Radell Lewis runs through a full personal policy wish list built live on stream, covering Supreme Court reform (term limits, ethics enforcement, and a cautious lean toward court packing), presidential immunity, pardon reform, filibuster reform, House expansion, voting reform (STAR and approval voting), a proposed federal Election Day holiday, billionaire tax reform and closing the stepped up basis loophole, a mandatory or incentivized civil service program for eighteen year olds, an overhaul of public education toward financial literacy and critical thinking, foreign lobbyist transparency, and a values based approach to international alliances. This is Radell's own running list of political solutions, unfiltered and evolving, in the spirit of the show's core mission: political solutions without political bias. Why Did Ohio Sell Its Parks to Frackers While Ballots and Two House Races Hang in the Balance?

Ohio sold fifteen thousand acres of public wildlife land to out of state frackers this week, days after officials killed a solar farm in Clark County. Meanwhile, over two thousand provisional ballots got thrown out in the May primary, and only 23 percent of Ohio's 18 year olds are registered to vote at all. The Supreme Court also handed down three rulings this week that land right back in Ohio, on mail ballots, birthright citizenship, and campaign finance. We close out with the two U.S. House races the whole country is watching this fall: Kaptur versus Merrin in the 9th District, and Turner versus Knickerbocker in the 10th. Do I Support Supreme Court Packing, and Who Actually Started It?

The Trend with Rtlfaith

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2026 88:17

This week is a different kind of Purple Political Breakdown: a solo, chat-driven deep dive on one question. Do you support packing the Supreme Court? Before you answer, Radell Lewis walks the entire board, because the honest version of this debate starts earlier than most coverage admits. You do not need new seats to pack a court if you control who fills the seats you already have. In 2016, Justice Scalia dies and Mitch McConnell blocks Merrick Garland for nearly a year on a "let the voters decide" standard he branded the "Biden rule." In 2020, weeks before the election, he reverses himself and confirms Amy Coney Barrett after tens of millions of Americans have already voted. The frame other coverage skips: the Garland blockade and the Barrett rush were already a form of packing the existing nine through procedure. From there, the history that undercuts the idea that nine is sacred. The number is not in the Constitution. Article III leaves it to Congress, which has changed it seven times, from six justices in 1789, to Lincoln adding a tenth seat in 1863, to the nine we have settled on since 1869. Then the cautionary tale: FDR's 1937 plan to add up to six justices died 70 to 20 in his own Democratic Senate, even as the Court quietly started upholding the New Deal anyway. Then the mechanics. Expansion is an ordinary statute, but it runs straight into the filibuster, which means ending the filibuster first. The Judiciary Act would take the Court from nine to thirteen, one justice per appeals circuit, though the strongest advocates argue less from circuit math and more from a bench they call rigged. We break down Brian Tyler Cohen's pitch to Gavin Newsom, and why messaging that makes people lose faith in the institution itself can backfire. Here is why Radell would start somewhere else: term limits and an enforceable ethics code. Eighteen-year staggered terms with a senior status off-ramp that may be achievable by statute, supported across the aisle by Federalist Society co-founder Steven Calabresi and liberal scholar Akhil Amar, echoed in John Roberts's own early writing, with 49 of 50 states already limiting their high-court judges and bipartisan polling supermajorities (PRRI: 85 percent of Democrats, 76 percent of independents, 67 percent of Republicans; Marquette: 73 percent of Republicans). On ethics, we cover Senator Whitehouse's SCERT Act, the Court's toothless 2023 self-written code, and the Fix the Court finding that Justice Clarence Thomas reported gifts valued near 4.2 million dollars over two decades, far more than the rest of the bench combined. Radell is careful throughout to separate what is documented from what cannot be proven. The bottom line: if the goal is a Court the public trusts again rather than one your side controls for a single cycle, term limits and ethics come first. Court packing can follow, but only with airtight, bipartisan messaging and the number locked into the Constitution so the country does not spend the next decade adding and subtracting justices. Steel-manned, receipts on the table, live chat the whole way, and an honest landing spot at the end. A war the country thought was over is back on, a housing bill almost everyone in Congress agreed on is frozen on the President's desk, and the Supreme Court just told the courts to stay out of its own immigration rulings. This week on Purple Political Breakdown, Radell Lewis connects one thread through all of it: a President who keeps choosing the fight over the people. In Nuanced News: the Iran ceasefire that already looks broken as fresh U.S. airstrikes hit this weekend, the Senate flip-flop on the Kaine War Powers resolution, and the Republican civil war brewing between Vance and Rubio for 2028. Then the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, passed 85 to 5 in the Senate and 358 to 32 in the House, and why Trump is holding it hostage for the SAVE America Act. Plus two 6 to 3 Supreme Court rulings that end Temporary Protected Status for hundreds of thousands of Haitians and Syrians, restore border metering, and quietly strip the courts of the power to review any of it. In Breakdown in the Public: who gets to decide what is true now, from NewsGuard's AI news chatbot to AI cloning child performers' voices for Peppa Pig, to Russian money flowing into Europe's far right. In Research on a Dime: a wave of DSA and affordability-first primary wins, and Radell's read on whether this is a socialism revolt or just a country that is done overpaying for rent. We close on good news: mushrooms cleaning E. coli out of English rivers, a tooth-regrowth drug clearing its first human trial in Japan, and a Somerset farm roaring back to life. What does it take for a young, progressive Democrat to run for the Ohio Statehouse in a district that leans Republican? This week on the Purple Political Breakdown, Ohio Edition, I sit down with Daquan Neal, the Democratic nominee for Ohio House District 39, covering Northern Montgomery County and the Dayton area: Vandalia, Englewood, Huber Heights, Clayton, Northridge, Fort McKinley, Harrison Township, and Butler Township. Daquan is 30 years old, a Central State University graduate, and a former staffer in both chambers of the Ohio General Assembly. He won his May 2026 Democratic primary and is running under the slogan "Our Time Is Now." We get into his core argument that Ohio is not a red state so much as a non-voting state, with more unaffiliated voters than registered Democrats and Republicans in his district, and what it would take to actually turn those voters out. From there we break down his policy stack: a state public option as a first step toward universal health care, a percentage-based "livable wage" built on the MIT Living Wage Calculator with price-gouging protections attached, a progressive marginal income tax to replace Ohio's new flat tax, and the bill he says he will introduce first, universal free school lunch for K-12. We also talk political messaging, why "progressive" lands differently than "socialist," and how he uses his Forever Curious civics program to close the political knowledge gap. This is a real voter-information conversation about who represents you in Columbus and why the Statehouse may matter more to your daily life than Washington. Purple Political Breakdown: Ohio Edition takes you through three Ohio congressional races and the statewide news shaping the 2026 midterms. Host Radell Lewis breaks down the 6th, 7th, and 8th districts: Michael Rulli versus Elizabeth Kirtley in the east, the more competitive Max Miller versus Brian Poindexter race in the northeast, and Warren Davidson versus Vanessa Enoch in the southwest, the district Radell calls home. Before the districts, Radell follows the money. New campaign finance reports show Democrat Amy Acton outraising Vivek Ramaswamy in the governor's race, even as Ramaswamy sits on a far larger war chest built on a twenty five million dollar personal loan. Down the ballot, Democrats outraised Republicans in two of four statewide races while Republicans keep a cash advantage across the board. Radell makes the case for why this should worry anyone who believes elections should not be bought. Then the maneuvering. Radell covers the FBI operation targeting the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, the surprising death penalty split between Governor DeWine and his own new attorney general, and the two voter ID measures Republicans just pushed through. One is a constitutional amendment on your November ballot. The other, the one Radell warns you to watch, is a mail-in ballot photo ID requirement he argues is less about security and more about making it harder to vote. Plus quick hits on a submetering rollback hitting apartment renters and a dangerous new synthetic opioid spreading across Northeast Ohio. Political solutions without political bias. If you are in Ohio, we are striving for a better state on the way to a better America. PODCAST NETWORK ALIVE Podcast Network. Can an Independent Actually Win a Senate Seat in Idaho? Ft. Todd Achilles

What does it take to run for the U.S. Senate in one of the reddest states in the country with no party machine behind you? On this episode I sit down with Todd Achilles, an independent candidate for U.S. Senate in Idaho who is challenging three-term incumbent Jim Risch. Todd went from Army tank commander to two decades in tech, with leadership roles at companies like Hewlett Packard and T-Mobile, then served in the Idaho House before leaving the parties entirely. He founded Veterans for Idaho Voters and now teaches public policy. Todd makes the case that the core problem in Congress is structural, not partisan. He argues that the same debt, division, and dysfunction show up no matter which party holds power, and that the real divide in the country is top versus bottom rather than left versus right. We get into the issues he says are squeezing working Idahoans: rents inflated by what he calls algorithmic price fixing, non-compete agreements on low wage workers, share buybacks, and corporate consolidation. He also lays out his reform agenda, including his defense of the filibuster paired with a push to reform it, his view on AI guardrails, public school funding in rural communities, and why he believes a small group of independents could change how the Senate works. This is a long form, solutions first conversation with no gotcha moments. Todd's positions are his own. My job is to ask the substantive questions and let you decide. This week on Purple Political Breakdown: the guardrails keep getting overridden, and the polls say Americans can feel it. Radell breaks down a president who says an Iran peace deal gets signed any day now while telling you he loves the inflation that same war is causing. A new intelligence chief, Jay Clayton, nominated to clean up the Bill Pulte mess after FISA Section 702 surveillance authority quietly lapsed. Detainees on a hunger and labor strike at Delaney Hall in Newark, and the uncomfortable question of near-free labor for private profit. Then a Breakdown on the gap between what Americans believe is coming, AI risk and democratic decay, and what they will actually act on, including the world's first commercial brain implant and Trump's push to erase his impeachment from the record. Plus a Research on a Dime on the California "rigged election" claims, jungle primaries, and the governor race vote-split. This week on Purple Political Breakdown Ohio Edition, Radell Lewis follows the money and the power across Ohio politics and keeps circling one question: who is Ohio's government actually working for? Radell opens with the biggest and newest story, the FBI search of the Cleveland offices of the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, a progressive group that registers voters, and why the timing and the target deserve a hard, skeptical look. He revisits the FirstEnergy corruption scandal as the real, provable Ohio fraud story, then breaks down a busy week at the Statehouse: the two voter ID measures (Senate Joint Resolution 10, the constitutional amendment headed for the November ballot, and House Bill 472, the absentee photo ID copy requirement now sitting on the governor's desk), the data center tax break that lawmakers promised to end and then quietly kept, the Medicaid anti-fraud bill, and the 3.7 billion dollar capital budget. Then it is the races. The Senate fight between Sherrod Brown and Jon Husted, including the dueling Epstein attack ads and what is actually true about the Wexner donations, Husted's vote on Trump's anti-weaponization fund, and the latest polling that pushed Cook Political Report to move the seat to toss-up. The governor's race between Amy Acton and Vivek Ramaswamy, where Radell digs into Ramaswamy's tax plan, the independent cost estimates, and his own financial disclosure. And a full District Watch on Ohio's 4th and 5th, where Radell lays out exactly what Jim Jordan and Bob Latta stand for and what their challengers, Joshua Kolasinski and Brian Shaver, are offering instead. County of the Week is Butler County. Radell shares who he is voting for and why, makes the case for showing up even in deep red districts, and keeps it where he always does: political solutions without political bias, building a better Ohio on the way to a better America. McMorrow vs Stevens vs El-Sayed: Who's Ready to Beat Mike Rogers? | Michigan Senate Debate Analysis

The Michigan U.S. Senate Democratic primary just had its first real debate, and I broke down every answer in real time. On the stage at Mackinac: Mallory McMorrow, Haley Stevens, and Abdul El-Sayed, three Democrats fighting for the chance to take on Republican Mike Rogers in 2026. This is a new kind of episode for Purple Political Breakdown: live debate reaction, scored answer by answer, no team jersey, just who actually made the case. Here's what I dug into: Cost of living, debt, and the billionaire tax. Who brought a real plan and who brought a slogan. McMorrow's No Reverse Robin Hood Act and her hit on Michigan's SOAR fund versus El-Sayed's flat "tax the wealth" pitch. The AI fight nobody else is talking about. El-Sayed floated regulating AI as a public utility, like broadband, and it stopped me cold. McMorrow rolled out an AI jobs and safety plan. I get into whether any of this is actually deliverable for a single senator, and why the "AI as a utility" idea deserves a longer look. The both-sides problem. El-Sayed framed the right and the left as "two establishments playing the same game," and I push back hard. The door stays open for anyone with regrets, but pretending the parties are equally bad right now does not hold up. The filibuster mess. Stevens tied herself in a knot on whether to abolish the filibuster or use it, the moderator caught it, and I owned up to siding with her before I checked the math. Reconciliation matters, and I walk through why. AIPAC, antisemitism, and a moderator who came loaded. The Israel and Gaza questions got tense fast. I call the pile-on what it was while still taking the substance seriously. Healthcare and EVs. Public option versus Medicare for All, and whether killing the EV tax credit just handed the auto industry to China. This is the start of a debate and hearing reaction series. If you want political analysis that scores the argument instead of the party, this one's for you. Drop your take in the comments: who won, and who's actually ready to flip Michigan? This week on Purple Political Breakdown, Radell Lewis starts with the Meet the Press clip where President Trump claims he never guaranteed no new wars, and uses it to set the night's thread: every guardrail we built only works if somebody enforces it.Nuanced News runs that thread through four stories. The Iran and Israel escalation, and a ceasefire that is not really a ceasefire while missiles fly and warships and drones share the same strait. Bill Pulte handed acting Director of National Intelligence over eighteen agencies despite no intelligence background, through a Federal Vacancies Reform Act loophole that turns Senate confirmation into a workaround. A federal judge in Rhode Island striking down the asylum freeze in a 135-page opinion while the Senate moves roughly 70 billion dollars in enforcement. And the White House media offenders page, plus a list naming individual journalists and creators, as a First Amendment story that should worry you no matter your party.Research on a Dime is an elections roundup: the California governor primary (Becerra advances while Hilton and Steyer fight for second, with a wealth tax proxy war on the November ballot), the Los Angeles mayor runoff (Bass advances, then Nithya Raman advances against Spencer Pratt), the Graham Platner controversies in Maine, Iowa (Zach Lahn beats Trump-backed Randy Feenstra, so vote Rob Sand), and the Alabama congressional map. Breakdown in the Public takes on the affordability squeeze and the single-villain stories both parties keep selling. We close with good news: a pancreatic cancer breakthrough called daraxonrasib, sodium batteries as a low-cost rival to lithium, and a nonprofit wiping out medical debt for about 97,000 Connecticut residents.Listen now and find the show on the Alive Podcast Network and at purplepoliticalbreakdown.com.[Paste the Apple Podcasts episode link here before publishing.]Standard Resource Links and Recommendations (verbatim block)Standard Resource Links & RecommendationsThe following organizations and platforms represent valuable resources for balanced political discourse and democratic participation: PODCAST NETWORKCheck Out the Podcast Website: https://www.purplepoliticalbreakdown.comALIVE Podcast Network: Check out the ALIVE Network where you can catch a lot of great podcasts like my own, led by amazing Black voices.Link: https://alivepodcastnetwork.com/ CONVERSATION PLATFORMSHeadOn: A platform for contentious yet productive conversations. Radell digs into the documented swastika flag controversy tied to Taylor's office, the January 6 arrest of Dulaney whose prosecution ended after President Trump's order to drop those cases, and what each candidate actually stands for, from farming, energy, and the border to affordability, healthcare, the minimum wage, and union rights. He also makes the case for why Jen Mazzuckelli needs a real platform and real support, and why a safe seat still deserves an honest look. On Landsman: the former public school teacher and Cincinnati councilman who flipped the seat in 2022, his anti-establishment economic populism and the ten-bill "Pledge to America" from his November 2025 manifesto The Great American Comeback, signature bills like the No Harm Data Centers Act and his push to stop an AI-driven Medicare prior-authorization program, and the Gaza and stock-disclosure criticisms he will have to answer. On Conroy: the Air Force and CIA veteran running on border security, energy independence, and a Trump-aligned agenda, where he lands on national defense, public safety, Social Security, veterans, and crypto, and the open question of whether a first-time candidate is more MAGA-aligned than this district really is. Plus Statehouse Watch: Governor DeWine's pause on Ohio's runaway data-center sales-tax exemption (a 1.6 billion dollar hit in 2025, eleven times the original estimate), the Ohio Supreme Court ruling that makes public records harder to pry loose from Attorney General Dave Yost's office, and the court vacating the permit for the 6,000 acre Oak Run Solar project. County of the Week is Hamilton County, anchored by Cincinnati and Mayor Aftab Pureval, who once ran for this very seat. What does progressive even mean anymore? It is one of the most argued over words in American politics and one of the least defined. In this episode of Purple Political Breakdown, I sit down with progressive video essayist The Soy Pill to put the label under real pressure: where it holds up, where it falls apart, and why the left and the right keep talking past each other. We get into the questions people actually fight about. Is this just communism with better branding, or the Nordic style social democracy the guest says he is really after? Why do partial wins, like cutting child poverty under the expanded Child Tax Credit, get treated as failures? How should Democrats talk about AI when both parties seem to hate it? And heading into the 2026 midterms and 2028, does it matter more that a candidate is principled or that they can actually win? The guest makes his case. I test it. The Soy Pill built his audience explaining left leaning politics to people across the spectrum, which is exactly the kind of voice this show exists for. No gotchas, no shouting, just a real conversation about ideas. This week on Purple Political Breakdown, host Radell Lewis (Marine veteran, Ohio) connects the stories nobody else is connecting, with one thread running through all of them: when the people in power arrange the system around themselves, the rest of us get handed the bill. In Nuanced News, the Iran ceasefire is on life support, gas hit $4.52 a gallon (up more than 50 percent since the war began in February), and the President is floating a federal gas tax holiday that would shave off about 18 cents, a bandaid on a 50 percent spike. We break down the nuclear-program sticking point, steel-man the war hawks (Fleitz, McCarthy) and the no-endgame critics on the left (Dayen), and ask the honest question: was any of this necessary? Then the biggest story of the night: the $1.776 billion anti-weaponization fund, the IRS settlement that quietly drops tax claims against the President, the pardoned January 6 defendants who could collect, and why legal experts say the 2011 Keepseagle precedent does not hold up (no judicial oversight, an undefined standard for "weaponization," and a five-member panel the President can fire at will). This is where we make the case for something both parties used to claim they wanted: reining in executive power, no matter who holds it. Plus the Trump-Xi Beijing summit (Boeing, Taiwan, and a stack of promises Beijing never confirmed), a Research on a Dime on the full 2026 midterm map, a Breakdown in the Public on the generational squeeze (the Peter Pan economy and the global baby bust), and a Good News close that will actually lift you up: NASA's quiet supersonic jet, a human heart that heals itself, and the malaria vaccine saving kids by the millions. Every statewide executive office in Ohio is on the ballot in 2026, and not a single incumbent is defending a seat. Term limits cleared the building all at once. In this solo episode of Purple Political Breakdown Ohio Edition, Radell Lewis walks through the entire Ohio ballot, from the top of the ticket down to the competitive congressional districts, so you know exactly what you are voting on. Governor: Dr. Amy Acton vs. Vivek Ramaswamy. U.S. Senate: Sherrod Brown vs. Jon Husted. Plus Attorney General, Secretary of State, Auditor, Treasurer, two Ohio Supreme Court seats, and the U.S. House districts most likely to decide which party controls the chamber. Then we get into a week of Statehouse news that shows exactly what kind of fight this is going to be. Attorney General Dave Yost's surprise resignation to join the Alliance Defending Freedom, Gov. Mike DeWine's appointment of Andy Wilson as interim attorney general, and the open question of what happens to the FirstEnergy bribery prosecution. The Ohio GOP power struggle, as gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy sets the agenda on a voter ID constitutional amendment and a Medicaid fraud plan while the sitting governor reacts. HB 698, which would tie public college funding to compliance with Senate Bill 1. A federal plan to open thousands of acres of the Wayne National Forest in southeast Ohio to fracking. And Ohio's data center sales tax break ballooning to roughly $1.6 billion, far beyond the state's own forecast, while the savings flow to Amazon, Meta, and Google. County of the Week is Cuyahoga, home to Cleveland and to a property tax foreclosure case now before the Ohio Supreme Court that could matter to homeowners across the state. No news breakdown this week. Just a conversation. Radell took a few days off for a family milestone, and came back with a reset on why this show exists at all. This episode is the mission stated plainly: who Purple Political Breakdown is for, who it is not for, and why the goal was never to win an argument with people who have already decided. It is for the victims of the chaos and the people still reachable, not the loyalists. It is a case for defending American liberal democracy while demanding it be re-fortified, for progress that holds instead of change that detonates, and for aiming your frustration up instead of sideways. If you have felt the pull toward giving up on all of it, start here. Does America need a new vision? Let's get into it. Ohio's 7th Congressional District is back on every Democratic flip list in the country, and on this episode of Purple Political Breakdown Ohio Edition, Radell Lewis sits down with two-time OH-7 Democratic congressional candidate Matt Diemer to break down why. Matt has run this district twice, in 2022 and 2024, and he knows exactly what it takes (and what it costs) to fight for a seat the national party has long written off. We dig into the new Democratic nominee Brian Poindexter, the messy reality of incumbent Max Miller's divorce and the domestic violence allegations now hanging over his reelection, the union method that worked for organized labor before the Democratic Party walked away from it, and why R+11 might really be purple plus eleven in 2026. We also break down the 2026 Ohio primary night that just shocked half the state: Allison Russo's commanding 68-32 win over Bryan Hambley in the Secretary of State Democratic primary, the Attorney General Democratic primary surprise, Vivek Ramaswamy versus Dr. Amy Acton in the governor race, Sherrod Brown's comeback campaign against Jon Husted in a Senate seat now tangled in the FirstEnergy bribery trial fallout, and what Maine's Graham Platner versus Janet Mills standoff tells us about how the national Democratic Party is picking its 2026 candidates. Plus the real conversation: vibes versus policy, why primaries make better candidates and better voters, and what an authentic working-class Ohio Democrat actually sounds like. If you live in OH-7 (Ashland, Medina, Wooster, exurban Cleveland, plus parts of Cuyahoga and Wayne), this is the breakdown of your race. If you don't, it's the case study for every flippable R+10-to-R+15 district in the country. Political solutions without political bias. Fixing the Monopolies, Homelessness, and a Rigged System in California Ft. Independent Candidate Reza Safarnejad

The California governor 2026 race is the most crowded gubernatorial primary in state history, and most of the candidates getting the airtime are the ones writing the biggest checks. On this episode of Purple Political Breakdown, host Radell Lewis sits down with Reza Safarnejad, an independent (No Party Preference) candidate for governor of California whose ballot designation is Small Business Owner and whose path into politics started the day the Palisades fire burned his entire neighborhood to ashes. Reza is not a career politician, but he is also not new to how government works. He is an immigrant, a working family man, and a University of Maryland graduate who spent twenty years in leadership roles on large scale federal, state, and local government programs before running for office. From 2006 to 2014 he worked at the National Institutes of Health on national level programs, including the National Cancer Institute's cancer.gov platform that helps doctors and patients find the best treatment options, and large scale virus and genomic research collaboration systems. Since 2014 he has worked in criminal forensics with crime labs and crime scene units across the country (including with the Ohio State Crime Labs), building unbiased, transparent platforms that serve victims and the wrongly accused. He is also the author of the book Veiled Souls and has written and spoken widely on civic issues. After the Palisades fire, Reza spent a year trying to work through California's local and state politicians and help new candidates, and what he found was systemic corruption baked into the party system itself. That is what pushed him from advocate to candidate. In this conversation we cover: the affordability squeeze on working California families, the homelessness factory that no amount of spending seems to fix, the billionaire tax loopholes that quietly hand sixty five percent Airbnb write-offs to the wealthy while regular Californians pay the bill, and the monopolies (Uber, Kroger and Albertsons, PG&E, Blue Cross, DoorDash, the pharma bros pushing ketamine and fentanyl) that he says are draining the state. We get into the Gavin Newsom critique without it becoming a Newsom episode, push back on the framing of the so-called billionaires' tax that excludes real estate moguls and Wall Street, dig into the Palisades fire accountability question, and talk through what California can actually do to push back when a Trump administration starts pulling federal funding and sending in the National Guard. This is a long-form, fact-checking, solutions-focused conversation with one of the lower-name candidates on the June 2 primary ballot. Whether Reza Safarnejad ends up in your top two or not, the conversation maps the issues every California voter should be testing every gubernatorial candidate against: affordability, monopoly power, homelessness, drug enforcement, tax fairness, and what it actually takes to be a governor for the people instead of the donors. Topics covered: California governor 2026 primary, independent candidate California, Palisades fire accountability, California affordability crisis, breaking up monopolies, California wealth tax, billionaire tax loopholes, Airbnb tax write-offs, California homelessness crisis, drug enforcement and marijuana legalization, federal funding fights, Newsom legacy, June 2 primary preview. The Supreme Court just gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais, then broke its own 32-day procedural rule to enforce that ruling mid-election with over 100,000 Louisiana ballots already cast. Justice Jackson called the move "chaos" with "a strong political undercurrent." This episode connects the dots between Callais and the gerrymandering cascade now sweeping Indiana, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, and beyond, where MAGA Republicans are redrawing maps to win power they can't earn at the ballot box, and how California and Virginia tried referendums to fight back (only one succeeded). We then break down Trump's "deal or bomb" ultimatum to Iran and the one-page memo he claims is close to signing. The U.S. Navy is interdicting Iranian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, oil prices have spiked since February, and the Iran war fuel spike is the through-line that just killed Spirit Airlines, which announced an orderly wind-down of operations on May 2 and eliminated 17,000 jobs. We unpack the political blame war (Bessent and Duffy point at Warren, Buttigieg, and the Biden DOJ; Warren and Stoller point at Trump's Iran war) and the actual antitrust question underneath: neo-Brandeisian theory versus the Chicago School consensus. In the Breakdown in the Public segment, we cover AI emotional manipulation and the rise of "AI psychosis," including the case of Soon Hourican, a man in his 50s in Northern Ireland whose Grok chatbot "Ani" convinced him he was being surveilled and led him to arm himself with a knife and a hammer. The BBC documented 14 similar cases across 6 countries. Jonathan Gavalas of Jupiter, Florida died by suicide after his Google Gemini chatbot claimed to be his wife. His family is suing Google. Bipartisan supermajorities (74 to 78 percent in the Human Statement national survey) want AI labels, safety testing, and accountability. Neither party is moving on it. Trump tried to deregulate AI through the One Big Beautiful Bill, then through executive order. Then we dig into the 2026 Ohio U.S. Senate race: Jon Husted versus Sherrod Brown, the cleanest test in the country for whether Ohio is genuinely red now or whether 2024 was a Trump-driven anomaly. We cover Brown's tailwinds (Trump's economic approval at 40 percent, the Callais fallout potentially energizing Democratic turnout), his headwinds (a smaller union-Democrat coalition, Ohio's redrawn map), and the First Energy / HB6 connections that may haunt Husted's campaign. Sherrod Brown, you have an open invite to come on the show. We close with three good news stories the mainstream media isn't covering enough: clean energy passing coal as the world's largest electricity source for the first time since 1919 (per Ember's 2025 review and the IEA's 2026 Global Energy Review), the UCL bowel cancer trial showing zero relapses after 33 months using pembrolizumab pre-surgery, and the North Atlantic right whale baby boom that proves conservation policy works when implemented seriously across borders. Tonight's through-line: the polls keep saying voters want guardrails. The people in power keep finding ways around them. From voting maps to AI rules to who gets prosecuted, this is the pattern we connect tonight. Ohio's 2026 primary delivered the tightest Democratic-to-Republican turnout split since 2006, plus a wave of results that reshape what to expect in November. In this solo episode of Purple Political Breakdown Ohio Edition, Radell Lewis breaks down the Democratic primary winners for governor, U.S. Senate, Secretary of State, Attorney General, and key congressional districts including OH-1, OH-3, OH-7, OH-9, OH-10, OH-12, OH-13, and OH-15. Then we dig into what the numbers actually mean: the Vance vs. Ramaswamy proxy fight in the Republican treasurer race, Speaker Matt Huffman's mixed primary night, the Cleveland Browns stadium becoming a Republican-on-Republican attack line, the school tax levy crisis with 42 of 66 levies failing, the Brenner-Lear switcheroo flop in Delaware County, the Ohio Supreme Court submetering ruling and what it means for renters, and this week's County of the Week, Richland County and the failed pro-solar referendum. Plus the Ohio news every voter needs in their head before national headlines bury it: Sen. Jon Husted's early Senate ad buy, the $79 million Republican defense, House Majority PAC's $10.8 million Ohio play, the $2.9 million governor's mansion repair, and the property tax abolition campaign's June signature deadline. Recorded in real time on primary day, this walkthrough covers everything from why Election Day should be a federal holiday to a live look at the Ohio sample ballot, the voter lookup process on the Ohio Secretary of State website, and the absentee ballot system most voters never use. Radell breaks down his ballot picks across the biggest 2026 Ohio primary races, including Amy Acton for governor, the Attorney General race between John Kulowicz and Elliot Foran, Annette Blackwell for State Auditor, the Secretary of State Democratic primary featuring Allison Russo and past PPB guest Dr. Bryan Hambley, Sherrod Brown for U.S. Senate, and a fresh on-air research dive into Ohio's 8th Congressional District race between Vanessa Enoch and Madaris Grant, including Enoch's healthcare platform on capping out of pocket costs, Medicare and Medicaid drug price negotiation, and preventative care funding. Along the way, Radell makes the case for expanded voter access: an Election Day federal holiday, all day voting windows, election weekends, paid poll workers, mail-in voting, and online voting infrastructure. Reclaiming Christianity from MAGA: Pastor LaTrina Slater on Trump's Jesus Image, Affirming Faith, and the Christian Left

Host Radell Lewis sits down with Pastor LaTrina Slater, a mental health professional with over twenty years in the field and author of a new book chronicling her journey reconciling Christianity with her identity as a gay woman. LaTrina serves as pastor of an affirming church and founded Grace Revolution, a ministry focused on youth, adults, and families in marginalized communities. This conversation lands in the middle of a national reckoning over Christian nationalism, after President Trump posted (and deleted) an AI generated image depicting himself in the likeness of Jesus Christ, sparking backlash from evangelicals, Catholics, and Pope Leo XIV. LaTrina and Radell unpack how MAGA Christianity has hijacked the faith, why so many Christians have been duped into tolerating anti Christian behavior in the name of two wedge issues (abortion and gay marriage), and what genuine Biblical values actually demand of believers. Topics covered include: affirming theology and LGBTQ Christianity, the weaponization of scripture against the queer community, why choice and free will are one hundred percent Biblical, how Christian values (generosity, charity, healing, feeding the hungry, sacrificing for neighbors) align with progressive and left leaning politics, the Pope Leo XIV feud, Christian nationalism versus authentic Christianity, and why the "fake Christian" crisis is really a political power grab dressed in religious clothing. LaTrina also offers a framework for reading sin through the lens of harm rather than inherited dogma, and makes a direct case to skeptical left leaning listeners that Christians belong in the progressive coalition. Whether you are agnostic, atheist, LGBTQ Christian, a person of faith feeling politically homeless, or someone who grew up in the church and walked away, this episode opens space for a conversation the mainstream refuses to have. Can Ohio's 7th District Finally Flip Blue Against Max Miller? Ft. OH 7 Candidate Laura Rodriguez-Carbone

Host Radell Lewis sits down with Laura, candidate for Ohio's 7th Congressional District, to break down one of the most flippable Republican seats heading into 2026. Once a R+15 district, OH-7 is now R+5 after redistricting, and incumbent Max Miller squeaked by at 51 percent even in a friendlier map. With recent child abuse allegations surfacing against Miller and a brand new county (Ashland) full of farmers no one has bothered to talk to, this race has every ingredient for a flip. Laura brings 23 years of federal public service to the conversation, including work at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights in Cleveland (an office that no longer exists thanks to this administration). Growing up between Cleveland and rural Athens County, she served patients, families, children, workers, veterans, and communities across seven federal agencies before being purged by DOGE last year. She has shown up in Northeast Ohio for years through boards, commissions, task forces, and community work. She is not running because politics is a career move. She is running because too many people in this district are being priced out, pushed aside, and told to expect less. In this conversation we cover: the unconstitutional war in Iran and why ending it lowers prices, Medicare for All as a today-not-tomorrow policy, the fifteen dollar minimum wage fight, why corporate capture of farmland and homes is the real threat, the Mamdani playbook for transparent representation, the loss of plausible deniability when this administration finds money for Argentina and Iran but not for working families, the dangers of party hypocrisy and the politics of exclusion, a humanist take on faith communities and the loneliness epidemic, and an honest assessment of Gaza, Israel, and the case for a two-state solution rooted in diplomacy rather than blank-check military aid. This is local politics done right: nuanced, honest, and built around results for actual constituents. Whether you lean left, right, or somewhere in the middle, this episode is for anyone who believes that the person we send to Congress should have the spine, the ethics, and the experience to challenge corruption on both sides of the aisle. What if finding your representatives, tracking their votes, and holding your government accountable was as easy as opening an app? In this episode of Purple Political Breakdown, host Radell Lewis sits down with Devin Neal, co-founder of Civic, the new civic engagement app built to make democracy accessible before the 2026 midterms. Devin brings serious technical firepower to this mission. He is a software engineer with experience at Google, Meta, and Cash App, holds degrees in computer science and mathematics from MIT, and previously built EulerStudio, an educational animation platform. He left all of that behind to go full time on Civic after the 2024 election made one thing painfully clear: public government data is public in theory, not in practice. Radell and Devin break down what the Civic app does right now (mapping your federal, state, and municipal representatives, pulling in FEC campaign finance data, and surfacing contact information for the people who actually represent you), where it is headed (voting records, committee memberships, sponsored bills, constituent feedback loops, and eventually a one stop shop for any public government information), and the deeper problem it is trying to solve: the feeling that government is a black box floating somewhere above your life. The conversation gets into why local elections matter more than most voters realize, why Ohio and other battleground states deserve way more attention heading into the 2026 midterms, how the Mamdani playbook of radical transparency is changing what voters expect from politicians, the right and wrong way to use AI in civic tech, what happens when Republican states try to restrict access to public data, and Devin's picks for 2028 (Gavin Newsom and Mark Kelly, with receipts). Whether you are a first time voter, a political organizer, a civic tech nerd, or someone who just wants to know who the hell represents you, this episode is a blueprint for what informed citizenship can actually look like. Radell Lewis is back for another Saturday breakdown on the Purple Political Breakdown, the nonpartisan political analysis show built on political solutions without political bias. This week is loaded. The U.S. Navy's seizure of the Iranian cargo ship Tosca by the USS Spruance has blown up the fragile Strait of Hormuz ceasefire, and the blockade is doing damage to oil markets, global shipping, and the Trump administration's leverage all at once. Radell breaks down why Iran may actually be gaining power from this conflict, why the new Iranian leadership is reportedly more radical than the officials Israel and the U.S. already removed, and what the Vance, Witkoff, and Kushner trip to Pakistan is really about. Then it is on to the redistricting arms race. Virginia voters approved a Democratic referendum that could flip the state's congressional map from a 6 to 5 Republican lean toward 10 Democratic seats out of 11, a direct response to Trump pressuring Greg Abbott in Texas. Radell argues why this is the right pressure tactic, even as he calls for an eventual end to gerrymandering altogether. Plus: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul's proposed pied--terre tax on $5 million plus non-resident NYC homes (with a projected $500 million a year in revenue), a fact check of Joe Rogan on ibogaine, a breakdown of why the SAVE Act is not just a voter ID law, Pete Hegseth's Pulp Fiction Pentagon prayer service, the Meta AI replacement layoffs, the collapse of American happiness post COVID, the NIMBY trap in housing policy, and a closing round of good science news the mainstream media keeps ignoring. Host Radell Lewis sits down with two Ohio libertarian write-in candidates ahead of the May 5, 2026 primary in a double feature episode of Purple Political Breakdown. First up, Jason Stoops, an auto mechanic from Wilmington running in OH-1, who shares how he was politically retaliated against by his local administration, why he believes cash-pay healthcare beats the insurance bureaucracy, and how the FirstEnergy scandal exposed the rot in Ohio's GOP machine. Then drunk uncle Mike Beloff joins from Galleon to talk about his OH-5 campaign against eighteen-year incumbent Bob Latta, his focus on bail reform and ending the prison industrial pipeline, and why Mike DeWine's reversal of voter-approved cannabis policy proves the duopoly ignores the people. Both candidates dig into the non-aggression principle, gerrymandering, the collapse of civics education in Ohio schools, the Epstein files vote, the Vivek Ramaswamy and Amy Acton governor's race, and what it means to give a middle finger to the political establishment. Whether you're a disenfranchised conservative, a frustrated independent, or just an Ohio voter who wants real accountability, this is a conversation about what the third party option actually looks like in the 2026 midterms. Keywords woven throughout: Ohio midterm elections 2026, libertarian candidates, OH-1, OH-5, Bob Latta, Jason Stoops, Mike Beloff, FirstEnergy corruption, bail reform, non-aggression principle, Mike DeWine cannabis, gerrymandering, Epstein files, single-payer Medicaid, third party candidates, Purple Political Breakdown, Radell Lewis.Standard Resource Links & RecommendationsThe following organizations and platforms represent valuable resources for balanced political discourse and democratic participation: PODCAST NETWORKCheck Out the Podcast Website: www.purplepoliticalbreakdown.comALIVE Podcast Network - Check out the ALIVE Network where you can catch a lot of great podcasts like my own, led by amazing Black voices. Ending Gerrymandering in Ohio: Dr. Bryan Hambley on the Fight for Fair Elections and Secretary of State 2026

On this episode of Purple Political Breakdown, host Radell Lewis sits down with Dr. Bryan Hambley, Cincinnati leukemia physician and Democratic candidate for Ohio Secretary of State in the May 5, 2026 primary. Bryan grew up on a small family farm, trained as a blood cancer doctor at UC Health, and launched his outsider campaign in January 2025, well before the filing deadline, because he has watched his patients and Ohio communities suffer under a broken, gerrymandered democracy. Radell and Bryan go deep on the three core responsibilities of the Secretary of State: drawing fair districts, writing honest ballot language, and setting voting policies that work for every Ohioan. Bryan lays out why he believes gerrymandering is wrong no matter which party does it, how the 2023 unconstitutional maps carved Lincoln Heights out of Cincinnati's congressional district, and why Ohio needs an independent redistricting commission similar to the ones already working in Idaho and Michigan. He breaks down how current Secretary of State Frank LaRose used intentionally misleading ballot language to defeat the 2024 redistricting amendment, why he handed over the last four digits of every Ohio voter's Social Security number to the Department of Justice, and why Ohio made a mistake pulling out of the ERIC voter roll system. The conversation also covers the rising musical chairs problem with term-limited Republicans like Treasurer Robert Sprague hopping offices, the threat of a Vivek Ramaswamy governorship, corporate PAC money as a cancer on Ohio's democracy, same-day and automatic voter registration, making Election Day a holiday, ranked choice voting in Lakewood and Cleveland Heights, business filing fee reform (proposing a drop from $99 to $75), and Bryan's position on universal, simple, affordable healthcare for Ohioans. Whether you are tracking the 2026 Ohio midterms, trying to understand the Democratic primary matchup between Bryan Hambley and former House Minority Leader Allison Russo, or just want a straightforward explainer on how the Secretary of State shapes elections in Ohio, this episode gives you what you need to cast an informed vote on May 5. From Mamdani's winning campaign blueprint to the reputational math of going on hostile platforms, this episode digs into the real strategic debates Democrats need to have before 2026 and beyond. Radell Lewis sits down with Zee, Founder of Sole Strategies and Executive Director of National Ground Game, the force behind the Unfuck America Tour. This conversation cuts straight to the heart of what Democrats are getting wrong and what it takes to actually win. Zee breaks down how her team has generated over 100 million organic views, raised $700,000 from small dollar donors, and flipped Escambia County blue for the first time since 1960. They tackle why TPUSA dominated college campuses for years, how Charlie Kirk built a media to ground game pipeline that Democrats still haven't replicated, and why the answer to right wing misinformation might be going lower, not higher. Radell and Zee get into the specific swing districts National Ground Game is targeting for the 2026 midterms including Ohio 7 and Wisconsin 3, why affordability should be the only Democratic message, and what Turning Point's own spokesperson admitted would scare Republicans most. If you care about youth voter mobilization, Democratic strategy, fighting extremism on campuses, or just want to hear two people who refuse to sugarcoat where the left stands right now, this episode is essential listening. Can Trump Actually Be Impeached? Iran Ceasefire Collapse, Inflation Explodes, and the Budget That Breaks America

Purple Political Breakdown with Radell Lewis breaks down the biggest political stories of the week with zero partisan spin and maximum accountability. This episode covers the U.S.-Iran ceasefire that collapsed almost immediately after Israel struck Beirut, killing over 254 people, while 230 oil tankers remain stuck in the Persian Gulf and Iran charges over $1 million per ship for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump's threat that "a whole civilization will die tonight" triggered more than 70 House Democrats to call for impeachment or invoking the 25th Amendment, and Radell breaks down exactly how the impeachment process works, Trump's impeachment history, and why Democratic leadership is pumping the brakes despite the outrage. The March CPI report dropped showing inflation surging to 3.3%, driven by the largest gas price spike since 1967 at 21.2% in a single month, while real wages declined and economists warn it will get worse before it gets better. Trump's 2027 budget proposal calls for $1.5 trillion in defense spending (the largest single-year jump in U.S. history), while slashing the EPA by 52%, NASA by 47%, and eliminating home heating assistance for 5.9 million households. On the election front, the Georgia special election saw a massive 25-point swing away from Republicans, Wisconsin's Supreme Court went 5-2 liberal, and new polling shows Trump's approval with white non-college women has collapsed at historic levels, but Democrats aren't capturing those votes. Radell also covers the Epstein investigation (Bill Gates set to testify), Trump's plan to pardon everyone within 200 feet of the Oval Office, MAGA infighting with Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, and Alex Jones, the OpenAI policy blueprint proposing robot taxes and a four-day work week, the U.S. fertility rate hitting a record low, and closes with good news including a gene therapy breakthrough reversing deafness, a blood test detecting multiple cancers, and a solar-powered reactor turning old car batteries into clean hydrogen fuel. Can eight Democrats really unseat Trump-backed Congressman Max Miller in Ohio's 7th Congressional District? On this episode of Purple Political Breakdown, host Radell Lewis dives deep into one of the most crowded and competitive congressional primaries in the 2026 midterms. From former FBI agent Ed FitzGerald's political comeback to union ironworker Brian Poindexter's surge of labor endorsements, Radell breaks down every candidate, follows the money, and gives his honest assessment of who actually has a shot. But that's not all. Vivek Ramaswamy's Ohio governor campaign just took another self-inflicted hit after proposing to close public universities during March Madness. The Cook Political Report downgraded his chances. Meanwhile, Dr. Amy Acton rolled out her affordability agenda on the Democratic side. What Does "Democracy in Housing" Mean in 2026? A Conversation with Ashley Thomas III

Is the American Dream of homeownership slipping away, or is it being taken? In this episode of Purple Political Breakdown, host Radell Lewis sits down with Ashley Thomas III, National President of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), the nation's oldest minority real estate trade association, founded in 1947 to fight for democracy in housing. Ashley is also the CEO and Founder of LA Top Broker, Managing Broker of First Security Investment Co., Inc. (one of the country's oldest Black-owned property management firms), and a 2026 Inman Power Player recognized for his leadership in housing equity. With over 25 years in real estate and mortgage lending, Ashley brings deep expertise to a wide ranging conversation about the systemic barriers blocking Americans, and Black families in particular, from building wealth through homeownership. The numbers are stark: white homeownership sits at roughly 72%, while Black homeownership hovers around 43%, a gap nearly as wide as it was when the Fair Housing Act passed in 1968. Together they explore why student loans on deferment still count against mortgage applicants, how credit utilization penalties punish people who have never missed a payment, and why married couples in nine community property states face an absurd imbalance where a spouse's debt counts but their income does not. Ashley breaks down NAREB's Community Property Fairness Initiative, the bipartisan housing bill targeting institutional investors who have been buying up entire neighborhoods since the 2008 foreclosure crisis, and practical solutions most people never hear about, including Section 8 voucher conversion to homeownership and zero dollar down payment assistance programs. The conversation also covers the national housing inventory shortage (America is roughly 4 million homes short), rising insurance costs that can exceed mortgage payments, property tax burdens on generational wealth transfers, appraisal bias in Black communities, and the connection between housing policy and economic mobility. Ashley also shares details on NAREB's upcoming national initiatives: Realtist Week (April 12 to 18, 2026) featuring homebuyer education and credit literacy events across 115+ boards nationwide, and the 8-City Affordable Homeownership Bus Tour (April 25 to May 2) in partnership with the African American Mayors Association, with stops in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Detroit, Gary, Kansas City, Memphis, Little Rock, and Tulsa covering sessions like Development for the People, Credit Power, and From Housing to Homeownership. He also highlights Realtist Restore Day (June 27), a national day of service mobilizing local boards to support families with home restoration. Whether you rent or own, this episode lays out the policies, the problems, and the solutions that affect every American's ability to put a roof over their family's head. Iran War 2026: Gas Prices Surge, Trump Executive Order Restricts Voting, Pam Bondi Fired Over Epstein Files & DHS Shutdown

The Iran war just got real. An F-15E Strike Eagle has been shot down over Iran, marking the first U.S. aircraft lost to enemy fire in Operation Epic. With one crew member missing, gas prices surging past four dollars a gallon, and Defense Secretary Hegseth firing top generals during active combat, the cracks in the Trump administration's war strategy are impossible to ignore. Radell Lewis breaks it all down on this episode of Purple Political Breakdown. On the Supreme Court front, justices heard oral arguments in Trump v. Barbara challenging the executive order to strip birthright citizenship, and even Trump's own appointees appeared skeptical. The court also took up Watson v. RNC, a case that could eliminate mail-in ballot grace periods in over a dozen states before the 2026 midterms. Meanwhile, Trump signed a sweeping executive order creating a national voter database and restricting mail-in voting, a move election law experts call unconstitutional. Pam Bondi was fired as Attorney General after reportedly failing to prosecute Trump's political opponents aggressively enough. She still faces a congressional subpoena on April fourteenth to testify about the Epstein files. The DHS partial shutdown drags into its second month with over five hundred TSA officers quitting and no resolution in sight. In the Research on the Dime segment, Radell explains what executive orders actually are, what powers they give the president, and why Trump's record-shattering pace of 254 executive orders cannot substitute for actual legislation. The segment also covers a new MIT study proving that AI chatbot sycophancy causes delusional spiraling in users, even perfectly rational ones, plus a deep look at the data behind affirmative action and why public opinion has shifted. The episode closes with good news the media is not covering: a breakthrough seizure drug reducing episodes by 91 percent in children, North America's largest wildlife overpass opening in Colorado, declining global child mortality, and AI-powered cancer detection advances. Radell Lewis breaks down one of Ohio's most important and overlooked races: the 2026 Secretary of State election. With Frank LaRose term-limited out and running for auditor, five candidates across three party primaries are competing to control how Ohioans vote, how businesses get registered, and how ballot language gets written. Radell goes candidate by candidate through Republican primary frontrunner Robert Sprague (Ohio's current treasurer who dropped out of the governor's race in under three weeks to endorse Vivek Ramaswamy), his challenger Marcell Strbich (a retired Air Force intelligence officer pushing one of the most aggressive election security platforms in the country), Democratic establishment pick Allison Russo (the former House Minority Leader facing scrutiny over her 2023 redistricting vote and an ongoing employment discrimination lawsuit), Democratic outsider Bryan Hambley (a cancer doctor from Warren County running on ending gerrymandering with zero corporate PAC money), and Libertarian candidate Tom Pruss (a Toledo small business owner campaigning for equal ballot access). Radell also covers Trump's executive order on mail voting and what it means for Ohio, the FirstEnergy bribery mistrial that stunned the state, Ohio officials opening thousands of acres of public land to fracking, and the broader 2026 statewide landscape where every executive office is turning over. Then Radell sits down with independent gubernatorial candidate Tim Grady for a deep conversation about what it takes to run outside the two-party system in Ohio, why independent voters are the largest voting bloc but have the least representation, the rise of populism on both sides, whether Democrats are capable of governing long term, and what a "radical centrist" vision for Ohio actually looks like. Whether you are tracking the Ohio primary election, researching Ohio 2026 candidates, or trying to understand Ohio election reform, voter registration deadlines, redistricting, gerrymandering, or the future of independent politics, this episode has you covered. The Supreme Court deliberates on birthright citizenship and the 14th Amendment as Trump pressures conservative justices, and a new executive order targets mail-in voting in what critics call a blatant move to disenfranchise voters before the 2026 midterms. The panel also tackles the Supreme Court backing a challenge to Colorado's conversion therapy ban, Trump putting his signature on U.S. currency, the purpose (and problems) of the No Kings protests, and whether America's oil dependency makes the case for clean energy impossible to ignore.
