Justin and Jonathan kick off this week's episode of The Cloud Pod by themselves, Peter joins the party late because he's been fighting dinosaurs and Ryan is unable to attend as he can't move from under the weight of the kitten on his lap.    A big thanks to this week's sponsors: Foghorn Consulting, which provides full-stack cloud solutions with a focus on strategy, planning and execution for enterprises seeking to take advantage of the transformative capabilities of AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. This week's highlights Amazon will find any excuse to use GIFs just like the rest of us. Google has given Cardi B a headstart on a theme song for its new product. Azure sent the wedding invites out late but still expects you to show up. Amazon Web Services: Cheaper Than Healthcare Amazon RDS on VMWare no longer requires the use of a VPN tunnel back to AWS. Still cheaper than paying for healthcare.  Amazon Elasticsearch Service announces support for Asynchronous Search. This is really cool! Amazon EC2 now allows you to replace the root volume for a running instance. There are some great use cases for this.     Red Hat Enterprise Linux with High Availability is now available on Amazon EC2. Good to see IBM isn't throwing up barriers.  AWS is releasing the new Amazon FSx File Gateway. Hopefully this is easy to implement.   AWS announces moving graphs for CloudWatch Dashboards. Also known as GIFs for CloudWatch.  Google Cloud Platform: Closet Fans of Cardi B Google announces PHP, a general purpose programming language, is now on Cloud Functions. Visit thecloudpod.net to see a live example of PHP, also known as the WordPress platform we built our website on.   GCP is launching Web App and API Protection (WAAP), which provides comprehensive threat protection for web apps and APIs. Do not confuse this with the Cardi B song.    Google has made the Doc AI solutions generally available. If you've sent a fax lately, you know how expensive it is.    Google announces new multi-instance NVIDIA GPU on the Google Kubernetes Engine. What a massive risk for the tech industry — having one company that manufactures all the chips.    Azure: Short Notice Microsoft brings Azure supercomputing to the UK Met Office. Supercomputers and the Cloud are finally colliding.      Microsoft is joining the Redhat Summit this week to announce several new RHEL capabilities for Azure. It did a terrible job of giving us the heads up about this event. TCP Lightning Round Justin takes the win and this week's point with an easy dig at information security, leaving scores at Justin (7), Ryan (3), Jonathan (6).  Other headlines mentioned: AWS Ground Station now supports data delivery to Amazon S3 AWS Cost Categories introduces a details page  AWS Secrets Manager Delivers Provider for Kubernetes Secrets Store CSI Driver AWS Systems Manager OpsCenter and Explorer now integrate with AWS Security Hub for diagnosis and remediation of security findings AWS Nitro Enclaves now supports Windows operating system  AWS Cloud9 now supports Amazon Linux 2 environments Google Cloud Spanner launches customer-managed encryption keys and Access Approval  Things Coming Up Announcing Google Cloud 2021 Summits [frequently updated] Save the date: AWS Containers events in May AWS Regional Summits — May 10–19 AWS Summit Online Americas — May 12–13 Microsoft Build — May 19–21 (Digital) Google Financial Services Summit — May 27th  Harness Unscripted Conference — June 16–17 Google Cloud Next — Not announced yet (one site says Moscone is reserved June 28–30) Google Cloud Next 2021 — October 12–14, 2021 AWS re:Invent — November 29–December 3 — Las Vegas Oracle Open World (no details yet)

From being customer obsessed to discovering more about life on Earth through space exploration, Clint discusses how AWS will help customers explore the new frontier. Next, the team talked to Payam Banazadeh, founder and chief executive officer of Capella Space. Payam explains how Capella’s Earth observation satellites use AWS Ground Station to speed up the process of downlinking data and delivering it to decision makers.

In this monster episode of AWS TechChat, Shane and Pete (yes he’s alive and back) come at you with a raft of short sharp and important updates that occurred in May 2019. They started the show with a price cut for Amazon Connect because everyone likes price cuts, and Amazon Connect is now 26% cheaper in two US regions. Next, they cover additional cloud-formation support for both AWS Transfer for SFTP and AWS Backup, allowing you automate the usage of these services. Moving on they talked through Amazon CloudWatch percentiles, as it has introduced support for percentiles on metric filters which are particularly useful when applied to metrics that exhibit large variances. AWS Ground Station has gone GA (General Availability). So prepare your satellites. There are no long-term commitments, you pay only for antenna time, and you gain the ability to rapidly scale your satellite communications on-demand when your business needs it. Shane then kept it real by talking about AWS Step Functions Callbacks. Callback patterns automate workflows for applications with human activities and custom integrations with third-party services, and now it's native. Lastly, to close out the show, they covered three new EKS updates that address monitoring updates, through to additional functionality and reduced administrative effort. We like to hear what you like and perhaps what you don’t like, keep the feedback coming and don’t be shy, send us an email at awstechchat@amazon.com

This weeks podcast consists of three short interviews recorded at the Canadian Space Summit in Ottawa on November 28 and 29. Segment 1 (03:47) - In the first segment I spoke with Ryan Anderson, a co-founder of the Satellite Canada Innovation Network, known as SatCan. It was just over a year ago that I last spoke with Ryan in episode 22 about the new SatCan project. Since then, the organization tried unsuccessfully to be a part of the governments Supercluster program. However, the concept has is not dead and the founders diligently worked towards their goals and just prior to this weeks summit did announce that they had received some funding from the government. Ryan provides an update on what’s happening at SatCan. Segment 2 (18:42) - In the second segment I spoke with Professor Gordon Osinski from Western University’s Centre for Planetary Science and Exploration about a new national educational and public outreach initiative called Space Matters. Segment 3 (29:36) - In the last I ask SkyWatch co-founder and CEO James Slifierz on his initial thoughts of the news that Amazon had just announced a new service called Ground Station that could disrupt the current ground station model. Surprising many, the ground station offering, through Amazon’s Web Services, has Lockheed Martin as a partner. Currently available in preview mode for selected clients, the service has two ground stations managed by Lockheed Martin with an additional 10 to be added. Initial customers include Maxar’s DigitalGlobe, Spire, BlackSky, Capella Space, Open Cosmos and HawkEye 360. Ironically Jeff Bezos the founder of Amazon stands to benefit in a way many might not have thought of. Each year, according to Bezos, he sells some of his shares in Amazon to fund one of his other ventures, Blue Origin. It’s been reported he’s sold over a billion dollars of shares at various times. Now, thanks to this new AWS Ground Station offering, and in a roundabout way, those customers, using that service, will in part, it seems be helping Bezos fund the development of Blue Origin. Listen in.
