Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: State of Generally Available Self-Driving, published by jefftk on August 22, 2023 on LessWrong. After a lot of discussions online where people try to argue about where self-driving tech is going but seem pretty confused about where the tech currently is, I wanted to give a bit of an overview of the current state. There are two main approaches: taxis and personal vehicles. There are many companies that have gotten as far as testing with a safety driver and/or with "trusted tester" riders, but as far as I can tell only two companies run commercial ride services open to the public without anyone in the driver's seat: Waymo (Google-affiliated) has been operating fully driverless vehicles in Phoenix AZ as a commercial ride service since 2020. They used to have a waitlist, but at this point anyone can download the app and try it. They've just expanded to SF, and have a waitlist for LA and Austin. As of 2023-08 they claim to be serving 10k weekly riders. Cruise (GM-affiliated) has been operating fully driverless vehicles in SF as a commercial ride service since 2022. They also now seem to cover Austin and Phoenix, and as of 2023-08-02 also claim 10k weekly riders. For personal vehicles, the most automation you can currently get is Level 3. These are systems where, when engaged, the person in the driver's seat can safely and legally read a book or otherwise not pay attention. If the system runs into a situation it can't handle, it alerts the driver, and if the driver doesn't take control it automatically stops the car. One option here, and maybe the only commercially available one, is Mercedes' Drive Pilot, which they launched in Germany in 2022. It only operates on highways under 40mph (essentially, stop-and-go traffic) but Mercedes takes on the legal liability when it's engaged. They claim their 2024 (as in, starting late this year) US models of their S-class and EQS sedans will have DrivePilot as an option and are approved in CA and NV. There may be other L3 systems in other countries - I'm having a lot of trouble telling what exactly launched with what models and whether it qualifies as L3. Overall, the current state is beyond "it's just a demo", but it's also still heavily limited by location and current conditions. Comment via: facebook, mastodon Thanks for listening. This is: State of Generally Available Self-Driving, published by jefftk on August 22, 2023 on LessWrong. Last year at VMworld, we announced the VMware Horizon next-generation hybrid DaaS architecture. For us, “next-gen” represents a complete rewrite of the Horizon architecture that allows us to modernize every corner of the desktop and app virtualization infrastructure so many customers rely on, built entirely from the ground up. For customers, it means unprecedented scalability and cost optimization along with a dramatic simplification of the infrastructure required to deliver enterprise-class desktop and app virtualization. Earlier this year we launched a Limited Availability program for Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure customers, and today we're pleased to announce that Horizon Cloud next-gen is now Generally Available to all Horizon Cloud environments on Microsoft Azure! Abstract of the talk… Apache Spark natively runs on top of Kubernetes (instead of Hadoop YARN) since 2018, but it's only since Spark 3.1 (released in March 2021) that the integration is now officially generally available & production-ready. What is the high-level architecture of Spark on Kubernetes, how does it compare to alternatives, what does the migration look like? These are some of the questions we will answer together. We will first introduce the core concepts, then go through the stories of customers who migrated, and then give you concrete technical tips to help you be successful with Spark (on Kubernetes). If time permits, I may do a risky live demo. This will be a technical talk with very fresh content - I hope you will like it. I plan to make it short enough to make room for Q&A and improvisations based on your request. So let me know if there's something specific you're interested in. Bio… I'm one of the co-founders at Data Mechanics (https://www.datamechanics.co), a Cloud-Native Spark Platform for Data Engineers. We're a YCombinator backed startup. We strive to finally make Apache Spark as developer friendly and cost-effective as it should be.. by automating the infrastructure management side (autoscaling, automated sizing of containers, autotuning of Spark configurations) and building intuitive dashboards to help monitor your data pipelines. Prior to Data Mechanics, I was a software engineer at Databricks, where I led their Spark infrastructure team.

5x if_bridge Performance Improvement, How Unix Won, Understanding VLAN Configuration on FreeBSD, Using bhyve PCI passthrough on OmniOS, TrueNAS 11.3-U2 Available, and more. Headlines 5x if_bridge Performance Improvement (https://www.freebsdfoundation.org/blog/500-if_bridge-performance-improvement/) With FreeBSD Foundation grant, Kristof Provost harnesses new parallel techniques to uncork performance bottleneck + Kristof also streamed some of his work, providing an interesting insight into how such development work happens + > https://www.twitch.tv/provostk/videos How Unix Won (https://blog.vivekhaldar.com/post/617189040564928512/how-unix-won) +> Unix has won in every conceivable way. And in true mythic style, it contains the seeds of its own eclipse. This is my subjective historical narrative of how that happened. I’m using the name “Unix” to include the entire family of operating systems descended from it, or that have been heavily influenced by it. That includes Linux, SunOS, Solaris, BSD, Mac OS X, and many, many others. Both major mobile OSs, Android and iOS, have Unix roots. Their billions of users dwarf those using clunky things like laptops and desktops, but even there, Windows is only the non-Unix viable OS. Almost everything running server-side in giant datacenters is Linux. How did Unix win? News Roundup Check logs of central syslog-ng log host on FreeBSD (https://blog.socruel.nu/freebsd/check-logs-of-syslog-ng-log-host-on-freebsd.html) This blog post continues where the blog post A central log host with syslog-ng on FreeBSD left off. Open source solutions to check syslog log messages exist, such as Logcheck or Logwatch. Although these are not to difficult to implement and maintain, I still found these to much. So I went for my own home grown solution to check the syslog messages of the SoCruel.NU central log host. And the solution presented in this blog post works pretty well for me! Understanding VLAN Configuration on FreeBSD (https://genneko.github.io/playing-with-bsd/networking/freebsd-vlan/) Until recently, I’ve never had a chance to use VLANs on FreeBSD hosts, though I sometimes configure them on ethernet switches. But when I was playing with vnet jails, I suddenly got interested in VLAN configuration on FreeBSD and experimented with it for some time. I wrote this short article to summarize my current understanding of how to configure VLANs on FreeBSD. Using bhyve PCI passthrough on OmniOS (https://www.cyber-tec.org/2019/05/29/using-bhyve-pci-passthrough-on-omnios/) Some hardware is not supported in illumos yet, but luckily there is bhyve which supports pci passthrough to any guest operating system. To continue with my OmniOS desktop on "modern" hardware I would love wifi support, so why not using a bhyve guest as router zone which provide the required drivers? TrueNAS 11.3-U2 is Generally Available (https://www.ixsystems.com/blog/truenas-11-3-u2-is-available/) TrueNAS 11.3-U2.1 is generally available as of 4/22/2020. In this round-up episode of AWS TechChat, Shane and Pete come at you with raft of short sharp and important updates that occurred in August in the year 2019. However, before doing this they took a look at the SDLC or the Software Development Lifecycle through the lens of AWS Lambda, our favorite server-less compute engine. We discussed trade-offs; in other words, what you are getting and what you are losing with AWS Lambda. We talked through the AWS Lambda support policy, 12-factor apps and worked through three options in which you can manage deprecation of runtimes. We then pivoted to updates, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (ECS) now supports multiple load balancers. You can now attach multiple target groups to your Amazon ECS services that are running on either Amazon EC2 or AWS Fargate. This update is quite huge and a big win for customers. AWS Lake Formation is now Generally Available, and it is a new managed service to help you build a secure data lake in days. It allows you to Identify, ingest, clean, and transform data, enforce security policies across multiple services and gain and manage new insights. Before closing the show off with a raft of Amazon EC2 Updates, 7 to be exact, some general updates, some around spot fleet and another around capacity optimization strategy for Amazon EC2 Spot instances.
