Lead vocalist Connie Sgarbossa, a transgender singer, has announced her intention to leave the band due to ongoing controversies15. The decision stems from a recent tour announcement with Dance Gavin Dance, which sparked backlash from fans who viewed it as hypocritical given the band's previous stance on similar issues. Sgarbossa expressed her disagreement with the tour decision and cited a "lack of urgency on issues" she had been raising within the band45. Our release schedule is all screwed up and based on vibes at this point so here's Episode 37, featuring even more Maynard James Keenan! This week we cover Maynard's jokey solo project Puscifer, which is neither fully a joke nor is it really a solo project. The more mellow, chilled out and synth-focused side project of the Tool frontman is often overlooked as a joke band that only exists for hardcore Tool fans, this episode goes a little deeper to figure out what the band's second album really has to offer. This week in the news corner we do an update on the ongoing beef between Drake and Kendrick however this was recorded before Kendrick's response track dropped. We also discuss the new Taylor Swift album for a bit before getting to our main story, metalcore being way too demonic!Hosted by Ausha. See ausha.co/privacy-policy for more information.

Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Gunnar Olsen. Gunnar's been on the show a lot recently with "save it for the pod" segments. But I noticed his Big Fat Five episode is almost 4 years old, which is a shame. Recently, I went to the Hollywood Bowl with my friends Mike Robinson and Neal Daniels, both show alumni, to see Gunnar play with Puscifer on the Sessanta tour, celebrating Maynard James Keenan's 60th birthday. It was mind-blowing. Gunnar is an incredible drummer, one of the best out there. At this show, Josh Freese was playing with A Perfect Circle, but now that Josh is busy with Foo Fighters gigs, Gunnar is playing with both Puscifer and A Perfect Circle for the rest of the tour. It's unbelievable and well-deserved. Puscifer is a perfect fit for Gunnar. Apart from this tour, Gunnar has also recorded or toured with Big Data, Bruce Springsteen, Miley Cyrus, HOKO, Mother Feather, Fischerspooner, Goo Goo Dolls, and many others. He's possibly my favorite drummer, and I admire him a lot. He's a close friend, and I always try to catch his shows when we're in the same town. Although this conversation is from 4 years ago, I wanted to bring it back up because the information is still relevant. It's fascinating to hear Gunnar talk about Tim Alexander of Primus, who has been a big influence on him, and now see them hanging out on tour together, seeming like best buds. Anyway, Gunnar, I'm really proud of you, and I admire your career more than you know, even though I tell you all the time. I hope you enjoy the records that helped shape Gunnar Olsen into the drummer he is today. Cheers! This week, I am joined by Tanya O'Callaghan, a musician, speaker, and activist, to discuss her unconventional journey from Ireland to a globally touring rock musician dedicated to advocacy. She talks about her roots volunteering at an animal shelter, her unexpected rise through LA's music scene after a chance encounter with Maynard Keenan of Tool, and her commitment to a plant-based lifestyle even while on tour playing alongside legendary acts like Whitesnake, Puscifer, Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson, and Dee Snider. Tanya discusses touring, the evolving food landscape in Ireland, and her deeply personal projects—a touring documentary promoting plant-based diets, and an upcoming film highlighting how plant-based nutrition can support veteran health and well-being. She also emphasizes staying true to your passions, engaging in respectful dialogue, and using storytelling to drive positive change. Enjoy! Ahhh, the joys of 1994 and the youthful days of yore. Y'know, there was a time when 1994 actually seemed relatively “recent”, like maybe a couple of decades ago, but we're actually 30 years beyond 1994, the year when Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in his garage, Quentin Tarantino released an ultra-vulgar display of cinema with “Pulp Fiction”, Sony forever changed the gaming landscape with the PlayStation, Slayer returned with a new drummer and a newly “manscaped” look (for some), and Pantera released their most extreme album to date that went to Number 1 on Billboard and forever changed the mainstream perception of metal. It's time to line up the “flavor crystals” and grab yourself some “chickle & waffles” before you pick up “a waft” and get “thumb blasted” while going “full clean (with an arrow)”. On today's show, singer/songwriter Jonny Polonsky tells the story of his musical life spanning from his early work doing homemade mixtapes to his current and future projects, and plays a song: IN DEEPEST DARK. GUEST OVERVIEW: Singer/songwriter Jonny Polonsky first made a name for himself with his talent for writing smart pop melodies, but he later embraced a more eclectic style that also encompassed hard rock and roots rock. Jonny's first foray into making music began as a teenager, writing, recording, and self-releasing homemade cassettes under the name The Amazing Jonny Polonsky. His debut album - on which he produced, recorded, and performed everything himself - is titled “Hi My Name is Jonny”, and was released by American Recordings in 1996. It received positive critical acclaim from international news outlets, including The New York Times and MTV. Immediately after its release, Polonsky and his live band toured as the main support act for Frank Black for twelve weeks in North America. Polonsky has continued to make music, collaborate with other artists, and gather a cult following. He has performed as an opening act for Audioslave with and even becoming a member of Puscifer, and did a lot of studio work (Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, The Chicks) https://www.jonnypolonsky.com/

Plus he teaches us about the legends in Reggae drumming such as Lloyd Knibb and Carlton Barrett and the gear that these Jamaican drummers would use when playing with icons such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Lee Perry and many more. Here is some more info on Gil: Los Angeles native, Gil Sharone, is highly regarded as one of the most versatile session and touring drummers in the world, who is known for his creativity, authenticity and strong pocket. He is a multiple-time industry award winner as a drummer, but will often wear other hats as a co-writer, producer, and an educator/clinician. Gil came to notoriety in the rock world as a former member of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Puscifer, Marilyn Manson, Stolen Babies and Team Sleep. However, he is widely known as an expert in other genres. Reggae, ska and rocksteady were part of his earliest influences along with jazz, funk, hip hop and fusion. Gil has established himself in the Jamaican drumming styles, authoring an award winning DVD and book entitled Wicked Beats, after playing with legends Eek-A-Mouse, HR of Bad Brains, Dave Wakeling of The English Beat, Fishbone, Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra and more recently with Slightly Stoopid, Morgan Heritage, and his current reggae/dub outfit, Gil, Migs and Rog. Gil is also an active member of a genre bending music collective, Saudade, where you can hear his jazz fusion collaborations with jazz greats John Medeski, David Torn, Robert Thomas Jr., Dr. Know and Chuck Doom. Gil's work further extends into the film/television world, working with composers Tyler Bates and Paul Haslinger. His work can be heard in Deadpool 2, Guardians of The Galaxy 2, all three John Wick movies, The Punisher (Netflix), Kingdom and Stumptown. He has also contributed both as a player and co-writer on the DC Comics: Dark Nights Metal Soundtrack, and his most recent work can be heard in the musical score for the live action Cirque du Soleil show, R.U.N.

This week we welcome Gunnar Olsen of Puscifer to The Musicians Guild. Gunnar is a drummer/musician that has recorded/toured with artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Big Data and many others. We've known each other for over 20 years since our bands met at a random show in Poughkeepsie, NY. Following that meeting RX and his band at the time,The Exit, did a fair amount of touring together and I'm honored to remain a friend and contemporary. Gunnar is from New York City and is one of the finest drummers in the city without a question. In this conversation we get into chatting about why he doesn't use in-ear monitors anymore, having lots of gear and maintaining it, difficulties of being creative on the road, working with Mr. Springsteen, finding where a drum wants to be tuned, Lay's Sour Cream and Onion chips, whats in his hi-hat drink holder and lots more! Get them snapping fingers ready, because we got Tommy Victor of Prong on the podcast this week to celebrate the release of State of Emergency. During our chat, we discuss the band's recent push in releasing five albums in five years after taking a creative break. Tommy also riffs on his preference to write everything himself, how his values in life have changed after becoming a father, and his excitement level of playing classic Prong albums in their entirety. We also enter a bit of a philosophical conversation about feeling a bit disconnected to people who need instant gratification in life, what tools of modern live performances he prefers to avoid, and how important it was to be respectful to older musicians when he was coming up in the scene. Petar and Sylvia discuss Doc Coyle of Bad Wolves calling out the online attack and boycott efforts on Thy Art Is Murder after they replaced vocalist CJ McMahon, and how we are in love with the idea of Primus, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle concept behind the Sessanta Tour. Those who follow the musical career of Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of bands such as Tool, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle, may not know that he is an accomplished winemaker in the Grand Canyon state. He planted his first vines in Arizona in 2002 and from 2009 has been making such good wine at his Caduceus winery that he has become a bit of a poster boy for Arizona wine. He tells wine writer and ex Arizona resident Elaine Chukan Brown how the late South Australian winemaker Taras Ochota inspired him to become America's pioneer of unusual blends – a red wine grape with a white one, for instance. Other Australian influences include using his lab equipment to analyze two of the country's most famous classic wines which showed him that grapes don't need to be super-ripe to make great wine. He reveals himself as a real wine geek and committed farm-to-table restauranteur – in fact there's hardly any mention of music in this intriguing conversation with the man who has arguably done most to put Arizona on the world wine map. Rut busting and reconstructing has probably been happening since the discovery of fire and advent of the wheel. Guitarists confront it each time they pick up a new instrument to avoid predictable patterns and tones. Premier Guitar contributor (and recent Rig Rundown subject) Pete Thorn has addressed this by suggesting several practices to approach our beloved 6 strings in a fresh perspective. And recently John Bohlinger recommended playing a different instrument to fertilize musical crops. But what does a guitar-playing producer and multi-instrumentalist do to shake things up for his band's fourth album? Well, for Puscifer's Mat Mitchell and the band's 2020 release, Existential Reckoning, you go back in time 40 years to 8-bit synth sounds and the archaic sampling lurking inside the proto-digital Fairlight CMI.“Part of [the appeal],” Mitchell told PG in a 2021 interview, “is the flow—the way that you work when you're using these tools. It forces you to do things differently. They are very limited, and being creative within very set boundaries is really good.” And being the creative force he is, Mitchell found gold in the antiquated sounds and tech.“They sound very unique,” he explains. “Of course, you can sample one and put it in a laptop, but it's different. All the voices are separate hardware. When you hit a note, it is bouncing around between [processor] cards, so you can hit a note five times and it may sound different all five times. There are all these little things that affect the way it sounds when you're performing, which is a very different sound from what you get when you sample.”But he would never tour with this digital dino, so how does Mitchell recreate 8-bit tones in a performance setting? Thankfully, moments ahead of the audience filling the pews of Nashville's iconic Ryman Auditorium, Puscifer's aural architect welcomed PG's Chris Kies for a chat about how Existential Reckoning's inspiration took him back to the future, and how his live rig has metamorphized and been miniaturized with contemporary gear to realistically represent those superannuated sounds.Brought to you by D'Addario XPND Pedalboard.

Whitney returns to the podcast to discuss how paradox, polarity and nuance show up in astrology, and how to best utilize concepts of “good” and “bad” to provoke self-awareness. How can nuance be used to both invite and prevent growth? How can we assess when duality is helpful vs. when it isn't? Whitney and I provide an overview of concepts such as malefics & benefics, sect, dignities and debilities, aspects, and retrogrades, to discuss what's both helpful and unhelpful about seeing something as “positive” or “negative". We also discuss the archetype of Mars, and the upcoming Mars retrograde in Gemini.
