Milestones: Deep Dive Analyses of Landmark Albums with Angélika Beener
Lauded musicians Josh Evans and Marcus Strickland join Milestones to discuss the debut album from saxophone giant Joe Henderson. Together they examine Henderson's harmonic and rhythmic innovation; the essentiality of collaborator and friend Kennny Dorham; and why it's always the right time to give flowers to one of the most important yet somehow underexplored musicians of our time. As members of Christian McBride's New Jawn, they share thoughts on the special relationship between the saxophone and trumpet in small group formats and why Henderson and Dorham are at the top of the list of dynamic duos.
Josh Evans of The Content Clearinghouse joins Sam again this week for a special episode completely devoted to an amazing skydiving event called “Echelon.” Created and operated by Andy Malchiodi and Matt Fry, the appropriately named event marks the coming together of some of the best freefliers in the world, to create unique and awe-inspiring skydiving formations, the likes of which our community is only just beginning to conceptualize.
Back at you this week with a double feature! The one and only Josh Evans, of The Content Clearinghouse, joins Sam to discuss two of the most famous skydiving movies ever created: Dropzone and Cutaway.First up: Dropzone!Plot synopsis: "A tough cop teams up with a professional skydiver to capture a renegade computer hacker on the run from the law." -- What should have been added, "...and the most insanity filled skydiving progression you've ever seen on the big screen, in addition to landings so bad you would have though they were jumping rounds the entire time."Spoiler alert: Watch these movies if you haven't yet and then come back and listen to their individual takes on them.
Back at you with Part Two of comparing and contrasting Dropzone vs. Cutaway with Josh Evans, of The Content Clearinghouse! Next up is Cutaway!Plot synopsis: "A drug enforcement agent goes undercover on a skydiving team to track down illegal drugs." -- What's not included: "...where speedstars are the pinnacle of the skydiving community, and it's normal to see people sit on the edge of airborne aircraft without a rig."Spoiler alert: Again, make sure you've seen the movie before listening! Enter at your own risk!
Jason and Paul welcome producer, engineer, mixer, and amateur mid-90s beat-maker, Josh Evans to the show. Josh has produced many records including Pearl Jam's Gigaton and Painted Shield's sophomore effort whilst also engineering and/or mixing many, many others including Soundgarden's King Animal, Dave Matthews Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, and the eponymously titled Chris Cornell anthology (among many others). The guys chatted about Josh's upbringing in Seattle, learning guitar and what he loved about music production. The conversation centers around Pearl Jam (obviously) but touches on Josh's time working with Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog. Stone Gossard and Ani DiFranco - "Disorders," a 2022 single on Loosegroove/Righteous Babe. With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard unearthed a six-year-old demo and teamed up with alt-folk icon Ani DiFranco for an anthem for abortion access. The music was composed by Gossard, along with Josh Evans, Skerik and Stanton Moore, with vocals and lyrics by DiFranco. All proceeds will be donated to the National Network of Abortion Funds, which aims "to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access by centering people who have abortions and organizing at the intersections of racial, economic, and reproductive justice." "...Women in every Republican stronghold in this country are left treading in a sea of unnecessary suffering, just trying to keep their heads above water," DiFranco declared. "Poor women will be drowned by the score. That is why this track is a fundraiser for abortion access — to help women who don't have resources but who desperately need abortions. I am so grateful for men like Stone, Skerik, Stanton — not just for the blessing of this track and the honor of being invited into it, but for actually seeing women in their full humanity and being willing to stand with them.” Read the full story at KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We all know the vow: “In sickness and in health.” But in reality, when serious illness enters a relationship, everything changes. A powerful mix of conflicting emotions can tug on people — love, devotion, grief, guilt, and even resentment. Illness can be a test — a trial by fire — but also an opportunity for growth. On this episode, we hear from couples and families whose lives have been touched by illness and find out how they made it through. How were their relationships transformed? How did they not only survive — but thrive? And what helps people cope, and even appreciate the good moments? We hear stories about how cancer changed the trajectory of writer Delia Ephron's life, the hidden struggles of family caregivers, and how one mother's illness transformed her family's life. ALSO HEARD: When writer Delia Ephron lost her husband of more than 30 years to prostate cancer, she thought she'd never love again. But then an acquaintance from her past, psychiatrist Peter Rutter, came along, and everything changed. Ephron's new memoir is called “Left on Tenth: A Second Chance at Life.” In the U.S., more than 50 million people serve as caregivers for a family member or loved one — and that number is on the rise. We talk with psychologist Julia Mayer and her husband, therapist Barry Jacobs, about the challenges caregivers face. They are the authors of “AARP Meditations for Caregivers: Practical, Emotional, and Spiritual Support for You and Your Family.” Mothers are often the glue that holds the family together — and when they get sick, it upsets the entire system. Reporter Diana Opong tells the story of what happened to one family in the aftermath of a new baby, a cancer diagnosis, and multiple surgeries. Writer Justin Kramon brings us this story of a romantic vacation gone wrong. Elaine Allard was enjoying a trip to Paris to visit her partner, Josh Evans — but a suspicious package, mysterious illness, and Josh's increasingly erratic behavior started to make her wonder if Josh was really the right partner for her.
