Island Theatre cofounders Kate Meyers and Steve Stolee discuss the origins and history of Island Theatre, the company's evolution from a more-or-less conventional community theater, to finding a niche with a small room, on-book performances, and the annual Ten Minute Play Festival. Friends for nearly forty years, Steve and Kate will also share stories of the local theatre scene in the eighties, including their first exposure to the community, the Susie Glass Burdick production of Grease, and how it led to an international musical theatre collaboration with a theatre company in Siberia. ABOUT ISLAND THEATRE Incorporated in 1994, Island Theatre is a 501(c)3 non-profit community theater company in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Specializing in theatrical presentations mainly by and for adults, it has three main performing components: Island Theatre At The Library, a bi-monthly series of on-book performances at the Bainbridge Library; Island Theatre At Your House (YoHo), a bi-monthly series of open play readings hosted in private homes; and Island Theatre Ten-Minute Play Festival, an annual juried short play invitational and presentation of selected plays held at Bainbridge Performing Arts. KATE MEYERS Kate received her B.A. in Theatre from Washington State University and first set foot on BPA’s stage almost 35 years ago. Kate cherishes the many roles she has played at BPA since then, from backstage crew to actor, board member (co-chairing the initial Capital Campaign to build BPA’s playhouse), and Director.  Onstage, Kate has played roles in Grease, Marvin’s Room, Blithe Spirit, The Butler Did It, and You Can’t Take it With You.  Her directing credits at BPA have ranged from the classical (Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing) to comedic (Art; Picasso at the Lapin Agile), dramatic (The Kentucky Cycle, Snow Falling on Cedars, The Grapes of Wrath, Amadeus, Arcadia), and – more recently – to contemporary “dramedies” (The Revolutionists, August: Osage County). Kate’s plays often take deep dives into the human condition, examining history, culture, and the importance of family. Several have contemplated art and the nature of artistic genius, as well as quantum physics, and even time travel.   STEVE STOLEE Steve Stolee is a freelance photographer, videographer, graphic designer, Bainbridge Islander since 1979, and a BFA from U.W. School of Art. He is a cofounder of Island Theatre and managing Director of the I.T. Ten-Minute Play Festival; a 2019 recipient of the Island Treasure Award for Arts and Humanities, cofounder of The Picture Project, and creator of the documentary film, “Another Man’s Treasure,” a story about the biggest rummage sale in the world. An honest man and a hell of a nice guy, he proudly claims to have danced with the great Cloris Leachman at the Port Townsend Film Festival.

THE TROLL TALE: A RADIO PLAY BY GARRETT VANCE & BIRKE DUNCAN “The Troll Tale” is about two Bainbridge Island teenagers attempting to bicycle across Sweden in 1984. They stop at a deserted campground, right before a storm hits. While lying in his sleeping bag, Garrett hears voices in the nearby woods. He realizes he must face his fears. This podcast also features a conversation with Birke Duncan and Ann Wilkinson Ellis. CREATIVE TEAM BIRKE DUNCAN – AUTHOR Birke Duncan earned an M.A. in Scandinavian Folklore & Mythology from the University of Washington in 1997. He and Jason M. Harris co-wrote two folklore books that became required texts in folklore classes at the UW, Michigan State, and Florida Tech. The first was “The Troll Tale & Other Scary Stories.” He has also worked as a magician at Magic Mouse Toys, and filmmaker   GARRETT W. VANCE – AUTHOR Garrett is a former Bainbridge Islander. He has since travelled the world, and now resides in rural Thailand with his wonderful wife and way too many pets. In his youth Garrett performed in several BPA productions, notably Tom Sawyer, in which he fell down a bottomless pit. Villains always have more fun! Garrett now makes a living as an SF author, and he is busy finishing up his 3rd novel for Ring of Fire Press. He is also the Art Director for “The Grantville Gazette.” A big Birke Duncan fan, Garrett admires how Birke magically transmogrifies his stories into radio plays! “Garrett used to tell the story of his 1984 troll adventure at campfires on his parents' beachfront property.” – Birke Duncan CAST BEN BABCOCK - GARRETT Ben currently resides in the NY metro area, and is a member of the arts community and is a sponsor of the arts. When he is not engaged in the arts directly, he builds new technology that augments the arts community and empowers new forms of art through digital technology. Currently, Ben is actively working on projects related to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in storytelling. Ben finds his greatest inspiration from spending time straddling a life in the city and a life in the rural country side. Ben previously played the hero of “A Long Vacation,” an Ogle Award winning radio drama adapted by Birke Duncan from the novella by Garrett W. Vance.   ANN WILKINSON ELLIS- HOLLY Ann loves a good mystery and radio! Author Louise Penny currently has her attention… As a life-long enthusiast of audio everything, Ann jumped at the chance to perform in Birke Duncan’s radio plays 20 years ago when she moved back to Bainbridge while co-producing independent film Farewell to Harry. It all came full circle this past summer joining BPA’s audible arts team producing eight episodes of the cheeky and helpful Bainbridge Stay at Home Companion featuring recorded comedy sketches, interviews with local kids and musicians along with community partners helping our region navigate health and safety measures during this pandemic.    MICHAEL LEONARD – NARRATOR / VOICE IN THE WOODS Michael spent over a decade working on Puget Sound stage and film before meeting the production team headed by Birke Duncan. It was on the set of the locally produced Joe Bean (by Bob McAllister) where they first met, and he was introduced to working in audio drama, finding a niche in narration. Previous appearances include A Janitor's Territory at the now-demolished 200 building at BHS and Vickie Gadget Saves the Universe by Garrett W. Vance. Michael left performing as a career path to try new things. He learned to fly helicopters, herd goats, work with steel, and became a founding member of the project team at “Strowler Living,” which combines community space with environmental stewardship.       Audio Engineer - Matt Hadlock, Creative Coordinator - Miranda Feldtman, Production Manager - Deirdre Hadlock, Director of Operations - Siobhan Maguire, Talk-Back Producer & Host - Matt Longmire, BPA Executive Director - Dominique Cantwell, BPA Public Relations Director - Sally Jo Martine PODCAST THEME MUSIC Our theme music “Swing for Mike” is written and performed by Ranger and the “Re-Arrangers.” Find out more about the band at www.RangerSwings.com.

Wondering how to vote on our upcoming SAFE Mobility levy? Listen here as Herb Hethcote and Doug Rauh, the men who helped draft the pro and con statements for the voters pamphlet, share their thoughts with COBI's Mark Epstein and BCB's Christina Hulet. This November, Bainbridge Islanders will vote on a $15 million Safe Access for Everyone (SAFE) Mobility Levy. If approved, it would fund shoulder improvements, better connected sidewalks, trails with a focus on safe routes to schools, and other improvements to support walking and biking. The cost of the levy for an owner of a $660,000 home -- the median value on Bainbridge -- would come to an estimated $185 in additional property taxes per year over a seven year period. In this podcast, Mark Epstein, Engineering Project Manager for the City of Bainbridge, shares how the levy came about and what the process would be for selecting and implementing projects, if approved. Also joining us are Herb Hethcote, who helped draft the “pro statement” and Doug Rauh, who helped draft  the “con statement.” Together, we discuss the levy’s pros and cons and offer different perspectives for voters to consider as they cast their ballots. There are many opportunities to learn more about the levy. City staff are hosting a workshop on Thursday, October 11 from 6:30-8:30 at Island Center Hall. Information will also be available on your ferry commute and at the farmer’s market. Have you ever wondered what life on Bainbridge Island was like, back before the Agate Pass Bridge and the commuter ferries? Wouldn't you like to hear about that directly from the folks who lived here back then? If you know some of those people, or would like to hear their stories and help others to do the same, this podcast is for you! The Bainbridge Island Historical Museum is developing an oral history project, and they need your help. In this podcast you'll meet the Museum's volunteer coordinator, Tim Bird, and Tom Arnold, a retired naval officer who's finishing up a masters in oral history, and who ran an oral history project for the city of Lawrence, Kansas before moving to Bainbridge. The museum, which will be working with the Senior Center, BCB, and other interested organizations, hopes to begin the project by focusing on conversations with Bainbridge Islanders who lived here during the 30's and 40's. They're looking for people to help with the project, either to introduce them to prospective interviewees, or to help conduct, record, edit and/or transcribe the interviews so they can become part of the museum's permanent collection. Because the museum already has several interviews on file, BCB will join in the project by offering occasional excerpts to give our listeners a flavor of Bainbridge as it once was. If you're interested in participating in this community-wide project, please visit the BIHM website, http://bainbridgehistory.org/, or you can drop by or call the museum any day of the week between 10 and 4. Bainbridge Islanders are famous for commemorating Earth Day each April, but this year Earth Month will be marked by events on the theme: "Celebrate Trees." In this podcast, Deb Rudnick, a board member of the Bainbridge Island Land Trust and the chair of our island's Watershed Council (affiliated with Sustainable Bainbridge) describes many of April events being hosted by nonprofits and businesses of Bainbridge island. As noted on the Sustainable Bainbridge webpage that provides a detailed calendar and listing of all the tree events for the month: "The goal of Celebrate Trees! Earth Month Bainbridge Island is to raise awareness and encourage involvement for Arbor Day and Earth Day, and to inspire all to protect our trees, our environment, and our planet. Celebrate Trees!" In this podcast, Deb fills us in on a sampler of the nearly 30 events and activities during the month. All events -- and their time and place -- can be found on the web calendar on the Sustainable Bainbridge website. The events are varied and include activities for all ages. They range from highly active -- such as weed pulling and a walking tour of the remarkable old trees of Winslow -- to quiet and contemplative -- such as the events for gardeners or those who want to simply say a blessing for our abundance of trees. Among the nonprofit sponsors of Celebrate Trees are: the Historical Museum, the Land Trust, the Parks District and Parks Foundation, the Watershed Council, Bloedel Reserve, Eagle Harbor Congregational Church, IslandWood, KiDiMu, Sustainable Bainbridge, Weed Warriors and the West Sound Wildlife Shelter, plus many businesses. Also, during Earth Month, there will be two Seattle-area opportunities for political action: Seattle March for Science on April 22nd Earth Day, at 10am; and the  Seattle Climate March, April 29th at 10am. As noted by Sustainable Bainbridge, here are some related treats during April: Trees You Can Eat! All month long local bakeries, including Bainbridge Bakers and Blackbird Bakery, will be offering tree and earth-shaped cookies for sale. Some of the best tasting trees you'll ever try! Madi Williamson is a young Bainbridge woman who, at age 21, took leave from her job for two weeks, and then for three months, to provide heartfelt hands-on care and comfort to Syrian refugee families in Greece. In this podcast, Madi shares with BCB's Barry Peters her remarkable and beautifully told stories of the experience of helping refugee families, and then realizing that she had come away with a level of understanding, meaning and insight she couldn't have gained in other ways. She talks about visiting the Greek island of Lesbos where boats with refugee families stream ashore, and her extended stay at the encampment with over 100,000 refugees at the Greece-Macedonia border village of Idomeni. Madi urged her step-dad, Andre Kamber, to take a break from his professional financial career for a similar experience of helping refugees. You'll want to sample the previous BCB podcast conversation with Andre, and with Alice Medoza and Ellin Spenser, who recently told BCB of their experiences helping refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos, similar to Madi's experiences. Here, Madi explains the poignant moment -- the sight of a drowned 6-year-old boy whose body washed up on a beach on a Greek island -- when Madi decided that she needed to drop what she was doing in her life at age 21 and go lend a hand. Madi offers a remarkably articulate and gripping description of the experience of being there, and the meaning of that experience when she brought it all back to Bainbridge. She and her young friends then proceeded to create a website at KeepItInSight.com that offers resources for teachers to share the story with students, and also offers a starting point for anyone who would like to take a break from everyday routine and travel to where the refugee needs are greatest in and around Greece. Please also listen to BCB's previous podcast interview with three other Bainbridge Islanders who traveled to Greece to help refugee families -- Madi's stepdad Andre Kamber, retired teacher Alice Mendoza, and realtor Ellin Spenser. From BCB... http://bestofbcb.org/wu-283-amy-dapice-sept-at-bac/ Amy D'Apice isn't shy about her art. In this podcast she shares the secrets and stories of the last nine months as she has been creating art for her solo exhibition this September at Bainbridge Arts & Crafts. Though a long time Bainbridge Islander, about four years ago Amy moved to Chang Mai, Thailand, where she paints for most of the year. Each summer she returns to Bainbridge Island to visit with family and friends, and shares her art. Wherever she is, Amy has always been drawn to the unnoticed spots of beauty in the world around her. A constant for her is the reliability of those spaces: the cracks in the sidewalks, the alleyways, the window sills, the street urchins. And she paints them. Amy details her journey in her blog, Art Conspiracy (http://artconspiracy.net/blog/). She shares the good stuff as well as the hard, the times when inspiration hits and the times where she just has to show up and hope for the best. In September, we get to see the fruits of her labor, and the process along the way. Come and celebrate "Kindred Spaces" with Amy this September. In this 17-minute podcast conversation, meet Jane and Dave Danielson -- the two long-time islanders who are the new owners of Eagle Harbor Book Company, the Island's iconic independent bookstore on Winslow Way. When Morley Horder, who has owned our beloved neighborhood independent bookstore for over 20 years, wanted to sell, he turned to Jane Danielson, long time employee, and her husband Dave. Both are lifetime lovers of books and bookstores, hanging out in them everywhere they travel, including Capetown, South Africa. In this interview for “Who’s on Bainbridge,” we learn that while Jane has worked a variety of jobs at the bookstore, including events coordinator, Dave has had a very distinguished legal career, including doing human rights and social justice work in Africa. He has worked with Desmond Tutu’s organization, Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, among others. On a break from her work in the bookstore, Jane also traveled with Dave to Africa, and helped to develop an archival center in Uganda. They met in the bookstore. Who knew that bookstore romance could develop into bookstore ownership? But thankfully for us Bainbridge Islanders, it did. So our much loved independent bookstore, an anchor and icon in downtown Winslow, will stay in local hands - ownership, management and, most importantly, the staff who we all have come to depend on. After slogging through the legal and administrative business of changing hands, Jane and Dave envision a bookstore that will become even more a hub to meet authors and raise and discuss ideas in the community. They envision collaborating with other local organizations and businesses to offer opportunities to gather and discuss important current events, informed by relevant books available in the store. And you can meet them at the upcoming store event. Jane and Dave will host an Open House at the bookstore 7-8pm on Thursday July 7th to both honor Morley’s enduring 20-year leadership, and to introduce themselves to our BI community. In this highly competitive age of e-books and Amazon instant downloads, we hear in this podcast conversation how the Danielson's are inspiring us to continue to support our most centrally-located independent bookstore in our downtown. In this 28-minute conversation, Bainbridge residents Ellin Spenser, Alice Mendoza and Andre Kamber describe their personal experiences traveling overseas recently to care for refugee families arriving from war-torn Syria. What can the rest of us do to help? This Saturday, as Ellin and Alice explain, we can bring contributions of used clothing, shoes, bikes, sports equipment, baby carriers and strollers for refugee families, for donation to Salaam Cultural Museum, the organization that helped our 3 Bainbridge guests travel to comfort the fleeing refugees, as described on this podcast. Please drop off donated items this Saturday, May 21st, between 9am and 4pm, at the garage of the home on 589 Grow Ave., Bainbridge. In this podcast, Ellin describes how she went to the island of Lesbos in Greece -- the homeland of two grandparents -- and put her professional realty career on hold while she personally cared for refugee adults and children arriving in unseaworthy boats from Turkey. Andre likewise paused his professional investment advising career after being inspired by the December 14th candlelight vigil at the Japanese Exclusion Memorial. Alice, who is a retired Bainbridge teacher and winner of the 2008 Island Treasure award, cared for refugees in Greece and has since then been telling her stories in local schools and service club meetings. Each of our guests describes the experience of feeling the desire to take some action to express compassion toward these families, especially in the context of the divisive and fear-mongering remarks of some of the US Presidential candidates. There are additional ways for concerned Bainbridge residents to help: see what local congregations are doing by visiting the website of the Interfaith Council of Bainbridge and North Kitsap; write to political leaders urging compassionate responses by the US to the needs of refugees; communicate with other Islanders on the Facebook page for "Bainbridge Islanders for Inclusivity". In this podcast, we learn about the Smiles Partners nonprofit community service program providing dental care to kids and seniors. We hear from executive director Imbert Matthee and program coordinator Lisa Schulze. They talk about how they would like to grow the Smiles for Life program and reach out to more people eligible for their services, especially seniors in our community. Smiles for Life, a division of Smile Partners, is an oral hygiene program serving anyone over 60 years old. The services are provided by a registered dental hygienist in their facility in Waterfront Park Community Center. The program offers reduced fees for those who qualify by income. At each preventive care appointment, patients receive a blood pressure screening, a head, neck and oral cancer screening, an assessment for decay and gum disease, and a cleaning. Smile Partners works with local dentists and encourages clients to have regular examinations with their professional dentist. Smile Partners is dedicated to providing healthy smiles to Bainbridge Islanders through reduced cost dental hygiene services. An established nonprofit, Smile Partners travels to schools in our county (and King county) to perform services in their mobile Smile Coach. Every year Smile Partners screens and treats thousands of children in the Puget Sound area to help them avoid the debilitating effects of tooth decay. (It had previously been adapted to film in the 1990s.) The theatre production will be performed at Bainbridge Performing Arts from March 13 to March 29. In this podcast, director Kate Carruthers talks about the challenges and excitement in bringing this historically based novel to the stage. The story takes place on Bainbridge Island, with characters that actually lived through this period in our community's history. In this interview, Kate tells us about how many community organizations and schools are using  this production as an opportunity to learn more about Bainbridge Island's unique history during this period through numerous events before and during the production's three-week run. David Guterson will be speaking informally before the Sunday, March 22nd matinee performance. After the Sunday matinee performances, cast members and Bainbridge Islanders who lived through this period on Bainbridge and in interment camps will also speak informally. In this podcast, Rotary member Tom McCloskey, who is the Chair of this year's Rotary Auction and Rummage Sale, recounts the history, scale and scope of this remarkable annual event, now in its 54th year. Tom points out that -- while the event is managed and maintained by the Rotary Club - it has become a true community-wide event. During the upcoming 11-day period, 116 Rotarians and about 1,100 other volunteers will prepare, physically work, manage, clean up and follow up.  Five to ten thousand customers are expected at the six-hour event from 8am to 2pm on Saturday June 28th.  Purchased goods may be picked up that day by vehicle between 10am and 3pm. To plan your Saturday shopping, attend the open preview night on Friday the 27th from 5-8pm. Meanwhile, starting on Friday, June 20th, you can drop off your donated goods at the Woodward Middle School.  Use the south entrance on Sportsmen Club Road between 8am and 8pm during the six days through Wednesday June 25th. Approximately 150,000 items -- some as small as toothpicks and others as large as donated cars and boats -- are expected. Proceeds of the event will fund the Rotary's annual community grants to nonprofits, plus large-scale community grants (like the Waypoint project that transformed the corner of Winslow Way and route 305). In addition, the proceeds will fund scholarships to High School students, donations to international humanitarian projects, and other worthy causes. Our BCB radio project itself was a benefactor of a $7,000 portion of last year's nearly $445,000 in Rotary proceeds in the form of a grant to our local nonprofit parent, Sustainable Bainbridge. The cumulative proceeds from 54 years of Rotary Auctions is likely to pass the $6 million level this year.  Tom points out that the first of those auctions generated dollars that helped acquire land for the Bainbridge Library. In this podcast, Tom McCloskey points out that many Bainbridge Islanders consider the Rotary Auction to be a way of taking care of their household "Spring Cleaning" while truly benefiting their community.
