What would you do if you came back century after century in different forms to live multiple different lives? Jonathan Evison explores this idea in his new novel, Again and Again. We talk about the importance of continuing the dialogue between the reader and the writer, the power of storytelling, and we play a game of Famous Reincarnations. Eugene “Geno” Miles is living out his final days in a nursing home, struggling to connect with his new nursing assistant, Angel. She is understandably skeptical of Geno's insistence of having not just one life but many – all the way back to medieval Spain. As Angel comes to learn the truth about Geno and his miraculous story comes to a head, so does the biggest truth that love is sometimes right in front of us. Last fall, the American Library Association compiled a list of books that have been targets of censorship, challenged for inclusion in the collections of school and public libraries. 1,269 books were challenged in 2022. Jolie McShane and Jeff McDonald are two of the activists seeking to ban books about sexuality and LGTBQ communities in Baltimore County school libraries. That's almost double the number of books that were challenged the year before. Most of the books are about LGBTQ communities, or are stories and histories centered around people of color. Republican Presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has made “anti-wokism” a central tenet of his campaign for President, and a central issue in his on-going feud with Disney. Around the country, conservative activists are seeking to limit what kids can access in their classrooms and curriculums. Today on Midday, a conversation about what criteria teachers, parents, politicians and boards of education are applying in the contentious fights around book censorship. Tom first speaks to Deborah Caldwell-Stone, the Director of the Office of Intellectual Freedom of the American Library Association. A little later in the program, Tom speaks with Jolie McShane, the President of Republican Women of Baltimore County and Jeffry McDonald, the President of the Patriot Club of America, a group based in Baltimore County. They have been working to have two books removed from Baltimore County school libraries, “Lawn Boy” by Jonathan Evison and “Gender Queer” by Maia Kobabe. Tom also speaks with George Johnson, the author of “All Boys Aren't Blue,” another book that is among the most frequently targeted for removal from libraries across the country.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, we're celebrating libraries! Not only do librarians help kids (and adults) find the books they need, libraries are a vital “third space” in our communities. They provide resources and information, they promote inclusivity, and they're a place where we can spend time with one another. Our hosts are joined by Carrie Wardzinski, a librarian and mom in Pennsylvania, who shares why she was drawn to the profession and what we can do to support our local libraries. After that, Jasmine gets the chance to sit down with amazing best-selling author Jodi Picoult. Many of Jodi's books are facing bans around the country, so she and Jasmine chat about why book bans are so dangerous and what's really behind them. Jodi also shares where she gets the ideas for her novels and why she thinks fiction is such a valuable way to tackle big issues like abortion, school shootings, and trans rights. Finally, Amanda, Rachel and Jasmine raise a glass to powerful stories, family hikes, and new experiences in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”Speaking of banned books, next month's Banned Book Club is all about Jonathan Evison's book Lawn Boy - one of the most commonly banned books in the country. Today my guest is NYT best selling author Jonathon Evison. His latest release, Small World, is a sweeping epic of the American experience. (Yes, have read it, and yes, it is really good. No, I didn't come up with the term “sweeping epic – that was someone much smarter than me.)  He also wrote the book “The Fundamentals of Caregiving” which became a movie currently available on Netflix. It is based on his time as a caregiver for a young man with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and stars Paul Rudd. It is funny, hopeful and honest. He also currently has the number 2 book on the banned book request list in “Lawn Boy.” This was his first work that I read and loved it. Let's see what we can do to move it to number one! The idea that we are still trying to ban books in 2022 makes me sad.  Folks, I want to apologize to you and Jonathon. People do so many of these press junkets and interviews, they have to get tired of doing these things. Here at Tony on the Mic, I want to tell the story, but more, just give people a chance to tell their story while being themselves. Talk about things they like and appreciate. This episode reminded me of that mission as we talked books, inspiration, process, etc for the first half, but he became energized towards the end when we started talking sports, music and kids! Lord knows I would rather talk kids and sports etc, so from now on there will be more of that! It also could have been partly to recording at 7:30 AM or some crazy early time. We make a future bet about how the Seattle Seahawks will do this year, I recorded it to have a record of it, if I lose, I have a feeling the evidence will be destroyed.

There'll be much mistletoeing, And hearts will be glowing, And podcast hosts will be all-knowing. That's right, America, it's the most wonderful time of the year and editor in chief Neal Pollack's got you covered. The world's best writers on books, film and quality tv have weighed in with their best of 2021 lists. In condensed episode #035 of the Book and Film Globe podcast, Neal starts the conversation with Sharyn Vane, who covered “The Year in Censorship” for the site. Sadly, there was an abundance of source material here, with a slew of books facing the wrath of the closed-minded—up a discouraging 60 percent in just a year.Early in 2021, according to Vane, the estate of Dr. Seuss revealed early this year that “it would no longer publish six of the legendary children's author's early books because they contained ‘hurtful and wrong' content.' By Fall, challenges were mounted against Angie Thomas' The Hate U Give, Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak and Alex Gino's Melissa (formerly George), Ashley Hope Pérez's Out of Darkness, Jonathan Evison's Lawn Boy, Maia Kobabe's Gender Queer, and George M. Johnson's All Boys Aren't Blue. Then BFG pod regular Stephen Garrett joins Neal to discuss a movie that seems to have gone entirely off the rails. Garrett reveals why he awarded The Matrix: Resurrections' a paltry one-star review. He cites not just the unforgivable absence of Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus) Hugo Weaving (nefarious A.I. program Agent Smith) but also the alarming number of predictable cliches: “Among the film's exhausting cinematic callbacks: our heroes will run up the walls while shooting guns, unloading bucketloads of ammo. Most of the villains will have bad aim, and [director Lana] Wachowski will use slo-mo with impunity.”

Keri and Carter are joined by special guest Ellen, a former teacher and concerned parent who has been fighting against pornographic material ushered into her local public school system under the guise of pro-LGBTQ literature. She calls out graphic drawings in Maia Kobabe's "Gender Queer: A Memoir," and sexually explicit depictions in over twenty other school library books, including Jonathan Evison's "Lawn Boy" and "All Boys Aren't Blue: A Memoir-Manifesto" by George M. Johnson. The trio discuss the gradual change in the public school system from decentralized schools to a standardized, centrally-controlled system with decreasing autonomy for local educators. Ellen observes that the Discovery Education Company, allegedly responsible for curriculum and library management in over 1/2 of US schools reaching over 51 million students, is owned by leftist San Francisco private equity firm Francisco Partners, which also owns companies directly promoting Critical Race Theory. While Carter argues that parents should not outsource moral development of their children and that ethical frameworks are impossible to completely remove from education, Ellen recalls a time when teachers strove to hide their political opinions from students. Both agreed that homeschooling or private schooling are excellent options for concerned parents. Before departing, Ellen explains how parents can get involved in their local public school districts as well. Carter and Keri remain to answer some superchats before taking a few moments to laugh at an awkward Tweet from David Gins, Kamala Harris' Deputy Director of Operations. They discuss Mayor de Blasio's new COVID vaccine mandates for all private sector workers and even children as young as 5. Carter calls COVID-19 a "litmus test for neuroticism," which prompts Keri to share some photos of mothers celebrating vaccination of their young children. One photo in particular sets Carter off on a rant, comparing the mother's mentality to that of Medea, the murderous mother from the Greek tragedy by Euripides of the same name. Keri uses the greek concept of "astorgos," or lack of natural affection, to describe the phenomenon. Northern Virginia continues to be a battleground between school boards and parents over what should be taught in public schools. The latest incident involves a series of books in Fairfax Public School libraries containing graphic depictions of sex between children and adults.Stacy Langton, a mom from Fairfax County, Virginia, made headlines after she read aloud and showed images from those books, “Gender Queer” by Maia Kobabe and “Lawn Boy” by Jonathan Evison, during a School Board meeting. While the books have been temporarily removed from the Fairfax County Public School libraries, Langton is still concerned that a child will be permanently affected by the obscene pictures."You're going to accidentally have your child stumble across this and open up. And once you see this, you can't unsee these images," she says.Langton joins "The Daily Signal Podcast” to talk about that School Board meeting, and the larger issue of such books being in public school libraries in the first place. We also cover these stories:Sen. His clear and evocative delivery of the novel works splendidly for this story that exists on several planes. The inner and outer lives of an Iraq War vet and former star football player comprise one plane, and the other focuses on a legend of long ago involving a Native woman named S'tka who is cast out by her clan and survives on the edge of the ice with her son, N'ka. ABOUT JONATHAN EVISON Jonathan Evison is an American writer best known for his novels All About Lulu, West of Here, The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving and This is Your Life Harriet Chance!. His work, often distinguished by its emotional resonance and offbeat humor, has been compared by critics to a variety of authors, most notably J.D. Salinger, Charles Dickens, T.C. Boyle, and John Irving. Sherman Alexie has called Evison, "the most honest white man alive." On Amazon; https://www.amazon.com/Jonathan-Evison/e/B001JP2P1W/ ABOUT LAWN BOY For Mike Muñoz, a young Chicano living in Washington State, life has been a whole lot of waiting for something to happen. But how? In this funny, angry, touching, and ultimately deeply inspiring novel, bestselling author Jonathan Evison takes the reader into the heart and mind of a young man on a journey to discover himself, a search to find the secret to achieving the American dream of happiness and prosperity. That's the birthright for all Americans, isn't it? If so, then what is Mike Muñoz's problem? Though he tries time and again to get his foot on the first rung of that ladder to success, he can't seem to get a break. But then things start to change for Mike, and after a raucous, jarring, and challenging trip, he finds he can finally see the future and his place in it. And it's looking really good. Jonathan Evison is the guest. His new novel, This is Your Life, Harriet Chance!, is now available from Algonquin Books. It was the official August pick of The Nervous Breakdown Book Club. A little late getting to this one, considering that Harriet was the August pick for the book club, but as most of you know, my new policy is to only do in-person interviews, so I waited for Johnny to get down here on  tour, and then he came over and sat down and we talked. Always great to see Mr. Evison. Known him for a long time. We met on Myspace years ago. True story. And we've been buddies ever since. Johnny is one of those writers who can really do the work. He's prolific and yet the quality is so high. Every time I look up, I feel like he's got another novel coming out. (And here I should mention that his last one, Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, has been adapted for the silver screen, starring Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez, and should be out in theaters before too long.  Stay tuned.)  And what else? I think you're gonna like this one.  I know I always say that, but with this one I really mean it.  I had a good time talking with Johnny Evison. We haven't seen each other in a while and this was our chance to catch up and there's just an essential goodness to him that always comes through, both in art and in life. In today's monologue I somehow start talking about Janis Joplin and how a certain Janis Joplin moment encapsulates my inner world when I'm deep in the throes of sleep deprivation. I also talk briefly about the recent blood moon.    Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Kathleen Rooney is the guest. Her new novel, O, Democracy!, is now available from Fifth Star Press. Jonathan Evison raves “O, Democracy! infuriates and inspires. Rooney has written a brilliant and fiercely readable novel of politics and ideals, both an indictment and a celebration of the American Experiment, which will leave you breathless.” And Elizabeth Crane says “With O, Democracy!, Kathleen Rooney makes a swift and seamless transition from poetry to fiction, pairing her skill for image with a fresh voice, humor, and a keen eye for the political world she navigates here. An exciting debut.” Monologue topics:  panicking, whining, suffering publicly, ratings, E.T., money, picking up the tab, emotionally needy social behavior. Learn more about your ad choices.
