Vicky Markolefa is an award-winning visual storyteller and communication expert from Greece. And she is the co-founder of Mind The Bump, the creative collective behind the Yellow Van Stories. But, above all, she is the love of my life.In this episode we talk about our plans for the year, projects to come, and why we do what we do. It provides you with an opportunity to get to know one of the major driving forces behind this show as she finds guests for the show, provides much needed feedback, and develops our long-term strategies.I met Vicky while shooting a film along the European Refugee Trail in the make-shift camp in Idomeni on the Greek-North Macedonian border. There she was and I was hers...for good.Vicky was the communication manager of MSF Greece at the time, facilitating medical help for refugees living amidst a growing humanitarian crisis.Despite her degrees in Business Administration and Marketing Management, I think it is safe to say, that photography and film are by far her big passions in life. It is here where she feels she can shape the world ever so slightly and follow her idealism.Vicky's work has to a very large degree been focused on human rights and ecology, holding leading communication positions at ActionAid Greece, WWF, and MSF Greece as well as having an extraordinary photographic and filmic body of work from around the globe featuring the same topics. What I find most extraordinary and moving in her images is her unparalleled ability to capture the vulnerability of both the photographed as well as the photographer, maintaining eye-level even when she towers over her subject. Her pictures are, in that sense, testaments of her empathy. For her storytelling work she has been awarded many times - in photography and in film. Vicky is an anarchist, believing in the governing power of nature. Maybe the reason she loves animals more than human beings. Or does she? Amjad Ramadan was born in Homs, Syria, in 1995. He left Syria due to the civil war and fled to Turkey in 2012 at the age of 17.He lived in Kastamonou for 4 years where he enrolled at the local university to study journalism.Due to Amjad's financial decline, he had to withdraw before any of the courses had even started and without his curiosity having been quenched. He decided to go to Europe for a better future perspective and arrived on the Greek island of Lesvos in 2016.Amjad's arrival coincided with the closing of the Balkan route that had until then been among the preliminary transit routes for refugees crossing the Aegean into Greece and, subsequently, traveling on further into Europe.Like thousands of others, Amjad got stuck at the Greek-North-Macedonian border at Idomeni. This is where Amjad met Vicky Markolefa, my girlfriend and creative partner, who is also joining us today on the Yellow Van. This podcast was basically Vicky's idea and she put us all in touch. Thank you, my love, for the gift of this episode.Amjad spent eight months in the make-shift camp of Idomeni, that, at its height, had roughly 15.000 people dwelling in an area that had only had an emergency strategy for 5.000 people. It was during this time, that I was in Idomeni as well. Only for about six weeks, having Fonsi as a luxury domicile amidst all the cheap tents. Being welcomed, fed, and groomed by our neighbours from Syria, the Ghiran, who shared everything with us - no matter how cold or wet the day would be. And it was very cold, and it was very wet a lot of the days back then when nothing else but summer tents were available, when the mud was ankle-deep, and disease was spreading throughout the camp.My idea of hospitality is to this day entirely rooted in my experiences there and the virtue of spirit that was heaped upon me.I only digress here to bear witness to the fact, that eight months in Idomeni are an eternity...but that they can also build a spirit. One of the many reasons, why Amjad says that "being a refugee is a badge one should wear with pride." Amjad joined the UNHCR Refugee Program and was first taken to a newly opened camp in Evosmos, close to Thessaloniki in the North of Greece. After roughly two more years, Amjad was accepted as a refugee in Germany where he was allowed to join his older brother in the city of Neuss where he has been living since 2018.And now, this long, hardy journey has brought him aboard the Yellow Van and I couldn't be happier and prouder to have him here with us today.Welcome aboard the Yellow Van, Amjad.SHOW NOTESAmjad on FacebookAmjad on InstagramUrban GardeningThessalonikiMédecins Sans Frontières (MSF)IdomeniRefugee Retrospective 2016The Balkan RouteLesvosSyrian Civil WarHomsGet Jim Kroft's beautiful song "Love In The Face Of Fear" Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/yellowvan)

Dessutom recenseras David Aronowitschs dokumentärfilm Idomeni.
In this interview, Haris discusses the state’s attack on the Idomeni border camp, the forced relocation of migrants to state run detention centers in the periphery of the city exposing individuals to the most toxic conditions, and efforts by Thessaloniki anti-authoritarian struggles to work with migrants to recuperate housing within the city center itself. Haris also distinguishes squatting in Thessaloniki versus Athens’ Exarchia district. He concludes by discussing the churches and Syriza’s demolition of migrant housing located on church property. We continue the conversation exploring how Greek anti-authoritarian encounters with migrant networks transformed understandings around the commons. In particular, not only creating safe spaces offering all the basic amenities, but spaces of trust and deepening social relations. We then discuss the future of migrant housing squats and self-run camps, the corruption of the refugee aid industry, and the emergence so called “internal” borders within the Greek state restricting movement for migrants refusing to claim asylum within island detention centers. There are bottlenecks at many key staging points throughout Europe, where people’s journeys are paused for a few days, weeks, or even months. And in many of these places – Idomeni, Subotica, Foggia – people begin to create their own informal settlements. They have a reputation for being desperate and chaotic, but their residents and volunteers have also often created something quite human there: community. Calais is just one of those places - a place where nearly 10,000 people co-existed as they tried and retried to cross the English Channel. Our regular host, Nick Owen, is somewhere in the middle of the Mediterranean sea this week. He's on board the Aquarius doing search and rescue with Dr Connor Kenny. The pair are going to be capturing a live rescue for the next episode. In the meantime, we're going to take a look back at an episode featuring Connor from Series 1. He's being interviewed about his time in Greece caring for refugees and talking about the eviction he witnessed of thousands of refugees from a camp in the village of Idomeni. "Everyday Emergency" is a podcast from MSF. In each episode, we bring you true stories from the frontline of humanitarian emergencies across the world. From the conflict in Syria to the refugee crisis in Europe, we’ll be talking to people with some incredible stories that may just change your outlook on life, or at least, for a moment, put things into perspective. In each podcast you’ll hear a true story written by an MSFer on the ground, read by an actor. We’ll then get them into the studio at MSF HQ for a chat about their time with MSF. „Sondern menschenaffin.“

Madi Williamson is a young Bainbridge woman who, at age 21, took leave from her job for two weeks, and then for three months, to provide heartfelt hands-on care and comfort to Syrian refugee families in Greece. In this podcast, Madi shares with BCB's Barry Peters her remarkable and beautifully told stories of the experience of helping refugee families, and then realizing that she had come away with a level of understanding, meaning and insight she couldn't have gained in other ways. She talks about visiting the Greek island of Lesbos where boats with refugee families stream ashore, and her extended stay at the encampment with over 100,000 refugees at the Greece-Macedonia border village of Idomeni. Madi urged her step-dad, Andre Kamber, to take a break from his professional financial career for a similar experience of helping refugees. You'll want to sample the previous BCB podcast conversation with Andre, and with Alice Medoza and Ellin Spenser, who recently told BCB of their experiences helping refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos, similar to Madi's experiences. Here, Madi explains the poignant moment -- the sight of a drowned 6-year-old boy whose body washed up on a beach on a Greek island -- when Madi decided that she needed to drop what she was doing in her life at age 21 and go lend a hand. Madi offers a remarkably articulate and gripping description of the experience of being there, and the meaning of that experience when she brought it all back to Bainbridge. She and her young friends then proceeded to create a website at KeepItInSight.com that offers resources for teachers to share the story with students, and also offers a starting point for anyone who would like to take a break from everyday routine and travel to where the refugee needs are greatest in and around Greece. Please also listen to BCB's previous podcast interview with three other Bainbridge Islanders who traveled to Greece to help refugee families -- Madi's stepdad Andre Kamber, retired teacher Alice Mendoza, and realtor Ellin Spenser. The Balkan route is closed, the fragile EU-Turkey deal is in effect, the Pope has been and gone, the traffickers are turning their attention to Italy & so is much of the media. But Greece continues to be the epicentre of a slow emergency. In a country in advanced economic meltdown more than 50,000 refugees & migrants, 'people on the move', are stuck. On the islands, the asylum processing "hotspots" funded by the EU are often grim affairs, like the one on Chios made out of repurposed shipping containers. Outside Thessaloniki, in a place where the railroad tracks run into grass, stands an abandoned toilet paper factory: no windows, no light, and tents huddled under the low roof. But, for a desperately stretched Greek government, this is better than the dark anarchy of the recently cleared camp at Idomeni, or the petrol station where children play in the still-working forecourt & the car wash has tents inside. The deportations back to Turkey of some 8,500 people who came since the deal was done have started (as have the suicide attempts). For the more than 40,000 refugees and migrants who arrived before March 20th and now have no place to go, another long, gruelling story is beginning. The left-wing Syriza government is having to contemplate just how long these refugees will be stuck there. Minister of Migration Yannis Mouzalas knows that the much criticised EU-Turkey deal is the only thing preventing another wave of refugees reaching the shores of Greek islands that are already struggling to cope: "This is not Greece's crisis, this is Europe's crisis." In the second episode of Destination Europe, Maria Margaronis explores the hopes & fears of refugees, islanders & Greek politicians & asks whether Greece is becoming Europe's "warehouse of souls." Producer: Mark Burman (Image: A Syrian woman in Greece)

Sven Markus Victor initial career path was that as a doctor. Though he had an interest in photography, he succumbed to familiar and cultural pressure to study medicine. But at some point, he realized it could only be a career in photography that would bring him happiness and fulfillment. So, he’s made the choice to replace the stethoscope with a camera. Part of that transition has involved a recent collaboration with US-based photographer Riley Draper. They journeyed to Greece to document the fate of tens of thousands of refugees, largely from war-torn Syria. Situated in these make-shift camps in the small town of Idomeni, these men, women and children struggle to survive as Western counties debate what’s to be done with them. All this is happening in the midst of economic crisis in Greece, growing xenophobia and fears of terrorism. Victor and Draper’s work attempt to put a face a people that are often looked upon as some amorphous mass. His work, and the work of photographer and reporters like him, hope to humanize a crisis that shows no sign of diminishing or going away. Viele stecken in Griechenland fest.
Tens of thousands of refugees are stranded in the Idomeni camp on Greece's border with the Republic of Macedonia. Most are trying to reach Germany. But now the border's closed. They have nowhere else to go.In the first months of 2016, tens of thousands of refugees left Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan for Europe. The great majority try to reach central Europe by the Balkan route. But now, it's been closed, leaving many refugees stranded in Greece. Many of them are afraid they'll be sent back to Turkey. Baha Samman from Syria was granted asylum in Germany. But his family can't get across the Greek-Macedonian border. He's doing everything he can to bring them to his new home.
