Es war als harmlose Aktion geplant: Für einen Weltrekord ließ die US-Stadt Cleveland 1,5 Millionen Ballons in die Luft steigen. In late 1985, Disney had just set the record for the most helium balloons ever released. As a way to kick off their 1986 United Way campaign, the city of Cleveland thought breaking this record would be a great way to draw attention to the fundraising event. But the balloon release didn't exactly go as planned... This is a look back at Balloonfest '86 when an impending storm caused 1.5 million balloons to play havoc with traffic, waterways, and an airport.  Besides spreading all the way to Canada, the balloons also caused issues during a search for two missing boaters on Lake Erie. Balloonfest '86 became pretty infamous, but was it really the "deadly disaster" that various outlets have reported it to be...? The Everything 80s Movie Review Podcast: Patreon.com/80s

September 27th, 1986. Just before sunrise in Cleveland's Public Square, the city center is abuzz with thousands of volunteers working tirelessly to fill up balloons. The goal? To launch 1.5 million balloons into the sky at once - a record-breaking spectacle, organized by Cleveland's United Way. They hope this will bring money and inspiration to a city that desperately needs both. Why did Cleveland choose this colorful stunt to repair its public image? And should this day be remembered as a triumph… or a disaster? Special thanks to Dr. George Fraser, former marketing director for the United Way of Cleveland and CEO and founder of FraserNet Incorporated; Chris Quinn, editor of The Plain-Dealer in Cleveland; and Nathan Truesdell, documentary filmmaker. In this episode of the Compendium, we step back into time to revist The Cleveland Balloon Fest of 1986, a high-flying event that hoped to lift a city's spirits but instead spiraled into one of the most infamous blunders of the decade. I tell Adam all the juicy details of this helium-filled fiasco, where ambition met reality with explosive environmental consequences. We'll explore how this well-intentioned charity event turned into a disaster, examining the safety concerns of mass balloon releases and their unintended environmental impacts. You'll hear how a city's attempt to set a world record became a case study in event planning disasters. The story highlights significant points in environmental activism history and raises questions about the safety practices surrounding helium balloons, ultimately becoming a controversial chapter in the Guinness World Records. The Cleveland Balloonfest Disaster of 1986 | Episode 69 Balloons often represent happiness, but if you've ever had to explain to a crying child why their balloon flew away and won't be coming back, you know that balloons are monsters. On this new and much requested episode: you'll learn the origin of the phrase, “it seemed like a good idea at the time”; we learn why Cleveland is called the Mistake by the Lake, and we'll see what is probably the most amount of damage one could possibly hope to achieve with balloons. And if you are thinking of listening to this as a Patreon supporter, for the first time ever, there are TWO ENTIRE MINISODES within this episode that no one else will get to hearThe first on the Cuyahoga River Fire Disaster of 1969; and a second on the Cleveland 10¢ Beer Night Disaster of 1974. We also look at the horrible history of promotions and publicity stunts that backfired catastrophically; and we learned why you never fire guns.About the actual main story here, we are definitely in a Cleveland state of mind, and I will tell you this one quote from the episode: Literally no part of this came together like it was supposed to, and in keeping with Cleveland's long habit of not having things go it's way, one observer was quoted as saying “it's actually quite impressive how badly it turned out”. There are terrorist attacks that aren't as successful as balloon fest.If the idea of getting episodes a little early and ad-free with ridiculously interesting extra material strikes you as a good thing, you can find out more at:www.patreon.com/funeralkazoo All older episodes can be found on any of your favorite channelsApple : https://tinyurl.com/5fnbumdw Spotify : https://tinyurl.com/73tb3uuw IHeartRadio : https://tinyurl.com/vwczpv5j Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w Stitcher : https://tinyurl.com/mcyxt6vw Google : https://tinyurl.com/3fjfxatt Spreaker : https://tinyurl.com/fm5y22su Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w RadioPublic : https://tinyurl.com/w67b4kec PocketCasts. : https://pca.st/ef1165v3 CastBox : https://tinyurl.com/4xjpptdr Breaker. : https://tinyurl.com/4cbpfayt Deezer. : https://tinyurl.com/5nmexvwt Follow us on the socials for more Facebook : www.facebook.com/doomsdaypodcast Instagram : www.instagram.com/doomsdaypodcast Twitter : www.twitter.com/doomsdaypodcast If you like the idea of your podcast hosts wearing more than duct tape and bits of old Halloween costumes for clothes and can spare a buck or two, you can now buy me a coffee at www.buymeacoffee.com/doomsday or join the patreon at www.funeralkazoo.com/doomsday

In 1986, the United Way of Cleveland launched nearly 1.5 million balloons to set a new world record and call attention to its annual fundraising campaign. It was beautiful for a few minutes, but then a stormfront caused the inflated balloons to fall, causing car accidents, closing an airport runway, spooking horses, and hindering the Coast Guard's effort to find two missing fishermen. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Audionautix- The Great UnknownThe Great Phospher- Daniel Birch Learn more about your ad choices. FyreFest, Altamont, Woodstock '99, Astroworld are some of the biggest festival disasters in American history, today we'll look at some of the most flawed festivals in Ohio history in our Season 7 Finale. We start with BalloonFest '86 a fatally flawed world record setting balloon release festival in Downtown Cleveland. We relive the ecological disaster and dangerous consequences of the City of Cleveland's releasing of 1.5 million balloons in September 1986. We're joined by Cleveland sports personality and Twitter legend Chris McNeill, better known as Reflog_18 on Twitter to discuss 1980s Cleveland and the ill-fated BalloonFest '86. We'll also talk about Chris McNeill's leading role in the "Perfect Season Parade" to protest the Cleveland Browns winless 2017 NFL season. Follow Reflog_18 on Twitter and check out his Ohio-based weekly sports show, the BIGPLAY Reflog Show here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjqGMjGtAUKxlthtZ7hXt7Q Next we revisit the economic disaster that was AmeriFlora '92 in Columbus, Ohio. This horticultural exhibition was everything and nothing. Part theme park, part flower show, part mixed message branding nightmare. This $95 million boondoggle projected some 5+ million visitors but fell way short of those numbers. Tim Trad, the creator of onlyincbus, details the big swing and miss that was AmeriFlora '92. Follow @onlyincbus on Instagram and check out Tim's incredibly interesting content here www.onlyincbus.com We go all the way back to the 1950s for one of the first failed music festivals in American history. We replay an interview from a previous episode with Jerry DePizzo of the famous Ohio rock band O.A.R. about 1952's Moondog Coronation Ball in Cleveland. The rock n' roll show hosted by the famous DJ Alan Freed, the man created with popularizing the phrase rock n' roll music. We follow Alan Freed's career and his disastrous event at the Cleveland Arena in March 1952, regarded by many as the first rock festival in the United States. Lastly, we sit down with friend of the show Vince Tornero to discuss the wildly successful concert series the World Series of Rock in Cleveland during the 1970s. We hear clips from his great new podcast season for the Evergreen Podcast Network show PrOHfiles called The Wrath of the Buzzard. His show documents the meteoric rise and fall of 100.7 WMMS - the iconic Cleveland FM rock station that proved to be one of the most influential radio stations of all time. We also discuss the disasterous 1979 World Series of Rock that resulted in violence and even the breakup of the famous band Aerosmith following their headlining performance at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. What happens when a helium-filled balloon is released and rises into the atmosphere? How long does a balloon last in the sky? Well, let's see. As it gets higher, the temperature and pressure around the balloon begin to fall. But the pressure inside stays the same, which makes the balloon constantly expand. It travels upwards for about an hour and a half, and reaches a height of about 28,000 feet, or 5 miles. That's only a little less than the altitude that planes fly at. That's when it goes pop, and the little pieces fall all the way back to the ground.   The Balloonfest '86 was a fundraising event that took place in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. The goal was to set a new world record by releasing a huge number of balloons into the air. They wanted to release 2 million of them, and it took 6 months to organize. Just as it started to rain in the early afternoon, the balloons were released into the grey sky, setting a new world record. The colorful cloud filled the square. But as the rain became heavier, the balloons were pushed back down. The storm carried them back to the city... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the 1980s Cleveland Ohio was known as 'The Mistake on the Lake'. The city was famous for its high crime rate, high unemployment rate, & a toxic river so polluted it literally caught fire every few months. It was certainly not a destination for tourists, and citizens were moving away from the city at a rapid rate.  City officials decided enough was enough & tried to rebrand Cleveland as a vibrant, thriving, exciting location by hosting a fun, spectacular attempt to win themselves a Guinness World Record by releasing 2 million helium balloons into the atmosphere… what could possibly go wrong??  Jacob shares the story with Adam Densten - one half of Adam & Symon Follow Adam on Instagram @adamdensten and @adamandsymonshow Listen to Adam's podcast 'The Adam & Symon Show' https://link.chtbl.com/MsfHdsVJ  Skip straight to the story: approx 7:15 We give you Just The Gist, but if you want more, there's this: Watch some of the news coverage of Balloonfest  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0CT8zrw6lw&t=300s  Check out Treb Heining's biography https://magicmadebydisney.com/2020/08/13/a-disneyland-balloon-boy-the-treb-heining-story-part-1/  Skip to part 2 if you wanna see Treb with Cher and her historic balloon arch ;) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this week's episode, Erika covers the disappearance of Rebecca Coriam. Rebecca was a youth worker on the Disney Cruise Ship the “Disney Wonder”.  On March 21, 2011 the Disney Wonder was setting sail from Los Angeles and heading to Puerto Vallarta.  The last time anyone saw Rebecca, she was on the phone and looked distraught, before heading to the crew swimming pool.  The following day, no one could find Rebecca, and the speculation became that she went overboard from a rogue wave.  What really happened, did she really fall overboard on accident, was it on purpose or was she murdered?  Sadly, to this day there are no true answers of what happened to the beautiful Rebecca Coriam. Alisha Bromfield wasn't interested in being Brian Cooper's wedding date. But Alisha didn't have much of a choice. Brian was her boss, and he was a vindictive creep. If she rejected his invitation, he might cut her hours, or worse, fire her. So Alisha told Brian she'd go to his sister's wedding with him, as a friend.  Then Kristin tells a story that's light on court stuff, but brimming with balloons! In 1986, the city of Cleveland wanted to reinvent itself. They figured out exactly how to do it. They'd host the biggest simultaneous balloon release, ever. It would be so fun! They'd be in the Guinness Book of World Records! They'd raise a ton of money for the United Way of Cleveland! What could go wrong??  And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia.
