One of the most under-the-radar beer scenes in Ontario can be found in London. Two hours west of Toronto, the city often gets overlooked for their craft brews so we wanted to shine some light on one of the OGs - Storm Stayed. Justin joined Cee and Nate to chat about why the Pale Ale is the most popular style in London, how marketing craft beer evolved over time, their bragging rights as the first brewery in Ontario to do a milkshake sour, the challenges of being a brewery based in London, and why their Berliner Weiss is a hit at the bar but not in packages. They got into four brews - Sunburst Pale Ale, Cove Pils, In Motion NEIPA and Shook Milkshake Sour (Pineapple, Lime, Coconut, Vanilla, Lactose). We learned a lot here - cheers! German-Style Sour Ale - Berliner-Style WeisseUse Brettanomyces (Brett) – yeast which gives a sour taste in beer(Description Courtesy of BeerandBrewing.com)-Maybe you’ve tasted it in a sour ale. Perhaps you’ve detected it in a unique Trappist ale. Or maybe you noticed it in one of your favorite brewery’s newest experiments. If you taste something funky, there’s a good chance Brettanomyces is showing one of its many faces.-Brettanomyces, whose name comes from the Greek word for “British fungus,” was first studied as a spoilage yeast. Winemakers the world over go to incredible lengths to get rid of it, and until very recently, so did most brewers. But now pros and homebrewers alike are taming this so-called wild yeast.-Color – Straw to pale. These are the lightest of all the German wheat beers.-Clarity: May appear hazy or cloudy from yeast or chill haze-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Malt sweetness is absent-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Not present-Perceived Bitterness: Not present to very low-Body : Very LowAdditional notes: Brettanomyces character may be absent or present at low to medium levels, and if present may be expressed as horsey, goaty, leathery, phenolic, fruityand/or acidic aromas and flavors. The unique combination of yeast and lactic acid bacteria fermentation yields a beer that is acidic. Carbonation is high. Traditionally, some Berliners were brewed or served with fruit, spices or syrups. Some more contemporary versions have been brewed with other ingredients such as darker malts. Any such versions will take on corresponding hues, and may exhibit flavor and aroma attributes typical of such ingredients.-ABV: 2.8%-5.0%-Glassware: Goblet (or Chalice) - (Description courtesy of BeerAdvocate.com) - Majestic pieces of work, ranging from delicate and long stemmed (Goblet) to heavy and thick walled (Chalice). The more delicate ones may also have their rims laced with silver or gold, while the heavy boast sculpture-like stems. Some are designed to maintain a 2-centimeter head. This is achieved by scoring the inside bottom of the glass, which creates a CO2 nucleation point, and a stream of eternal bubbles and perfect head retention as a result.Benefits: Eye candy. Designed to maintain head. Wide-mouthed for deep sips.Examples (Courtesy of Beer Advocate)Bretta Weisse - Firestone Walker Brewing Co. – Paso Robles, CAABV 4.9%Notes: Imagine yourself in Berlin’s Tiergarten enjoying this refreshing Berliner Weisse inspired beer on a warm summer’s day. Bretta Weisse honors the traditional beverage of the great Prussian capital, Berlin. Fredrick-the-Great was trained to brew it, and Napoleon’s troops called it “The champagne of the North”. Firm estery notes of stone and tropical fruit lead to Funky, yeasty, citrus aromas. Soft cereal and Oak flavors are enveloped by a firm acidity and tartness. The finish is dry and crisp; a thoroughly enjoyable beverage. At 4.9% ABV, one could imagine enjoying several Bretta Weisse’s in the Tiergarten, or anywhere else. This Berliner Weisse inspired Wheat beer was aged in 1700 gal French Oak horizontal foeders for 8 months.Thumbprint Berliner Weiss – New Glarus Brewing Company - New Glarus, WIABV 3%Notes: Napoleon hailed this tart beer style "the Champagne of the North." A lively and elegant masterpiece this Berliner Weiss is a kaleidoscope of fresh flavor.Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/craft-beer-storm-podcast-30776075/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? This week on the second biggest podcast in the Pacific Northwest, Business Over Beer throws a LIVE Valentines Podcast Party at Heathen Brewing Feral Public House with our very special guest Kura Love of Pure Romance. Kura talks about the business side of being a Pure Romance consultant and explains that her parties are as much about women's sexual health and wellness as they are about the naughty stuff. This is our third live event, we're still figuring out the audio side of live broadcasting. Sorry for the spots of feedback in the recording and to our audience who had trouble hearing the interview, but despite these snafus, we still had a great time. Happy Valentines Day! Guest Beer: Stickmen Brewing Company - Lake Oswego, OR Blackberry Berliner Schwarz, Fruit Sour, 5.7% ABV, 5 IBU, SRM 32 "A kettle soured Berliner Weiss style beer brewed with debittered black malt and fermented with Oregon blackberry." Special Releases: Heathen Brewing - Vancouver, WA - Special Release #1: Braspberry, Blueberry & Raspberry Sour Ale, 5.1% ABV, 10 IBU "Is it a coincidence that a blueberry fits inside a raspberry? We think not! After several experiments seeing if and how many blueberries can fit inside of a raspberry, we determined that was usually only one. Some may find this experiment pointless...we did come to the conclusion on one thing...a blueberry inside of a raspberry tastes great! So we took our hours of research and used it to make a beer. We added raspberry and blueberry puree to our sour base along with some lactose for a hint of sweetness that pairs perfectly with the tartness from the raspberries and sour base." Heathen Brewing - Vancouver, WA - Special Release #2: The Hop Whisperer, New England IPA, 5.7% ABV, 20 IBU "We whispered sweet nothings in order to get our hands on some Sabro, Wakatu, and Galaxy hops which have some awesome lime and coconut aromas. This smooth and creamy Hazy IPA balances a light maltiness with layers of tropical fruits and will have you whispering "Whoaaaa." Alfred Hitchcock's silhouette looms as we get into beer brags. Michael has a limited run peanut butter stout, which was most superb. Jeremy has a Berliner Weiss that tickled his fancy. Going from beer, we make an abrupt turn into the AI Dungeon, which throws a few abrupt turns back at us. Join Ser Gumbel as he faces the dragon, gamblers, and his own family. With that nonsense out of the way, we get into the FDR, where we spray a tanker truck full of milk stout into the wrestling ring.Beer in this episode: Confluence Milk ManCheers!

Season 1, Episode 15 - This week, We ‘mule’ some beer from Massachusetts and up our game with live Google Hangout + IRC Chatroom! This week on the show, Greg brings in two beers brought by houseguests @2BeerGuys and@aljpeace from coastal Massachusetts. They were in town for Disneyland and the 2014 Beer Bloggers Conference and left some fun session beers from Notch Brewing Co in the fridge– Hootenanny Berliner Weisse and Cerne Pivo. Jason hand-muled his beers. Mystic Brewing’s Day of Doom, and Spencer Brewery’s Trappist Ale. Notch Brewing Beers With Notch’s Hootenanny, we discuss common off flavors in some Berliner Weiss’ like butyric acid, present from oxygen getting in a sour mash. Notch’s is clean and lacto-tart! We also discuss clarity in the style. We loosen the belt one notch for Notch Brewing’s Černé Pivo, and are shocked at something that is commonly present in most dark lagers, but not this beer. Is it weird? Good? Bad? Listen and find out! Spencer Trappist Ale is up next…you know, America’s first and only Trappist brewery? Opinions of this newest Trappist brewery have varied widely among beer geeks…but their beer? It caused a chant. Is it Monkenweizer? Freedom Trappists! Mystic Brewing and Spencer Trappist Does Jason have right-place-right-time antics? It sure does appear that way, because he scored an exclusive bottle of a pretty awesome brew. Redstone Liquors delivered a bouncing baby Masterson Rye Whiskey Bourbon Barrel aged Day of Doom quad from Mystic that’s very “mystic.” Regardless, it’s a fricken bourbon barrel quad, and the flavors parfait very nicely. Overall, our trip to Massachusetts was a complete success.
