The story continues! In part 2 of the Origins of Humankind, we trace the first steps of our ancestors after they left the chimpanzee lineage. To get humanity going, our ancestors had to wander through millions of years of what anthropologist Dean Falk has called the Botanic Age. It's a time shrouded in mist, yet it may hold the key to some of humanity's most defining traits — from language and music to our clumsy toes and our large brains. On this walk through the mysteries of the Botanic Age, our guide is Dean Falk herself. She is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and the world's leading expert on human brain evolution. The UK economy faced mixed signals this week as inflation slowed unexpectedly in December, dropping to 2.5%, the lowest since early 2021, driven by lower energy and food costs. This has heightened expectations for Bank of England (“BoE”) rate cuts, with the market pricing in three reductions this year. However, core inflation remained stable, and economic growth is stagnating, raising concerns about stagflation. Business confidence plunged to a two-year low amid higher taxes and weak demand, while large firms plan hiring cuts and scaled-back investments following the Chancellor's £25 billion social security charge hike. UK trade growth prospects remain subdued, with Boston Consulting Group projecting just 0.7% annual growth until 2033, hindered by Brexit and global supply chain shifts. Retailers, facing rising taxes and wages, are hiking prices, adding to consumer pressures...Stocks featured:Genus, JD Sports and Trustpilot GroupTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets. Have you ever wondered how fund managers deliver a successful long-short strategy? David Seaman of Alpha Cygni Investment Management recently joined me for a conversation with Richard Stuckey, the manager of the Ennismore Global Smaller Companies Fund, about managing such a strategy in smaller global companies.  In this fascinating chat, Richard discusses different approaches to shorting equities and how they involve different approaches to risk management at the stock and portfolio levels. He outlines a couple of examples of stocks he and his team have successfully shorted that turned out to be deceptions. We then discuss two long positions he recently added to his portfolio. Genus, a UK–listed animal genetics company, Genus and Paradox Interactive, a Scandinavian-listed games publisherRichard then discusses the geographic spread of his fund and how to think about market inefficiency driven by the rise of the mega-cap tech stocks, passive investment and meme-driven markets. And… importantly, how to adapt investment strategy in a market that can remain inefficient for a long time. This is a masterclass in the often counterintuitive art of managing an absolute return strategy in a volatile and illiquid asset class. While not for everyone, it can offer downside protection in choppy markets while providing long-term exposure to quality compounding equities.I must remind you that this is only for information purposes and is NOT investment advice. Proactive's Tylah Tully breaks down ‘Just the Facts' of the latest news from Australian Vanadium Ltd (ASX: AVL, OTCQB: ATVVF). Through its subsidiary VSUN Energy, Australian Vanadium is advancing Project Lumina, a modular and scalable utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) using vanadium flow battery (VFB) technology. The project targets medium-to-long-duration energy storage solutions for Australian energy markets. Key appointments include Genus for power conversion and transformer systems, Sedgman for vanadium electrolyte storage and integration, and CellCube for technical expertise and power units. These partners bring expertise from high-profile projects, such as WA's Kwinana lithium-ion BESS. Project Lumina has progressed to Phase 2, refining assumptions from Phase 1, which demonstrated competitive levelised costs of storage at A$274/MWh for four-hour and A$251/MWh for eight-hour configurations. Phase 2 focuses on finalising 100MW system designs, optimising a “deconstructed” BESS model for extended lifespans beyond 40 years, and engaging energy offtakers, securing land and evaluating funding strategies. VSUN Energy highlights the importance of these partnerships in advancing utility-scale energy storage solutions, positioning Project Lumina as a leader in the renewable energy transition across Australia. #ProactiveInvestors #AustralianVanadium #ASX #OTC #Justthefacts #ProjectLumina, #VSUNEnergy, #VanadiumFlowBattery, #BESS, #EnergyStorage, #RenewableEnergy, #BatteryTechnology, #UtilityScaleStorage, #CellCube, #Sedgman, #Genus, #CleanEnergy, #LongDurationStorage, #SustainableEnergy, #GridStorage, #EnergyTransition, #VanadiumBatteries, #EnergyInnovation, #FutureEnergySolutions

Seeing as Jack's in the US (and we are home in NZ) it might be nice to just grab a few plants, structures, and colours that belong in our hearts and minds. If I remember well, America has some stunning trees, shrubs, and plants that knock the eyeballs out of your head. What I remember well are the dogwoods, known here by their Genus name of Cornus. This is a brilliant tree from Athens (Georgia): Just so you know: we can grow these here too – flowering in spring and often deep autumn colours too. Easy in full sun and part shade with fertile, well-drained soils Julie would also go with “white” and “America”. Some years ago, she took some cuttings from an ancient plant that grew around a very ancient building, here in the Halswell Quarry – that building is now history, but the cuttings are not! The Philadelphus (also known as a Mock Orange) hails from the American New World, is easy to grow and known for its magnificent, sweet scent. Juuls grows it on a fence – you can also grow it as a shrub or even a wobbly hedge. It loves sunlight and well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Don't let it dry out too much – water every now and then but don't make it too wet. Mulch is useful, as is some general fertiliser every now and then plus some potash before it flowers in spring. Take cuttings in Autumn… Easy! I am a fan of spectacular colours. And you simply can't get past dense blues. A Meconopsis was “born” in South-East Asia and there are many, many species. Unfortunately, they have quite a few negative ‘habits'. They are tricky to grow and often short-lived. Very difficult to successfully sow as seeds (sow them in late summer) and are very sensitive when you want to split them up by diversion to plant them in early spring. Part shade, and no full sun, and a nice mulch of rotten manure or compost – it feels like spoilt brat. Despite all this, it's a plant known as “Blue Poppy” and belongs to the Papaver Family We've managed a couple of successes, and it makes me go down the garden when they flower. This is what I call “Spectacular”. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, I'll discuss age, colorations, and behaviors as I take you on a tour of my Phormictopus collection. For those interested, I'll also be posting up a video version on YouTube later this week.  NOTE: Many of these "species" are likely just regional variants of P. cancerides, but we won't know for sure until this genus is studied further.

Gemma along with her colleague at Genus talked to our 3rd year students studying Livestock Management Systems as part of their agriculture degree with SRUC. Straight away I knew she would be getting an invite to the podcast! Gemma left the UK for a period of time after her degree heading for the US and used her dissertation knowledge on embryo transfer on a unit that used the technology. I would say that it's clear Gemma was hooked! For the last 5 years Gemmas has been with Genus as part of their beef team and will soon be moving onto QMS! Along with her partner Hamish, they have a farm as well! One of those stories with someone that is clearly passionate and I don't want to ruin too much a Gemma is an amazing story teller! Enjoy!

Intro rant is about 25 minutes long."Paintbrushes", aka the genus Castilleja, are seemingly everywhere in the Americas, especially in the more arid and montane parts of these continents. Containing 200 species, the genus is highly diverse and broadly distributed, working on the them of being a partial parasites of other plants and producing wildly flamboyant and colorful inflorescences, due in large part to showy bracts that subtend each individual flower. Mark Egger is a specialist in this genus, and today we talk paintbrushes with him for over an hour - their often confusing flower morphology, their ecology, their diversity, and their pollinators. What are some of the rarest species? What are some of the weirdest? We answer a bunch more questions in this 80 minute long conversation about one of the coolest and most ubiquitous plant genera in North (and South!) America.
