Momentum is a very special word with many different applications. I wonder how you define it and what images come into your mind when you think of ‘momentum’?  I left you yesterday walking along the road from Jericho to Bethany. Oh, we’re not simply walking, we’re walking with Jesus, and He was leading His disciples toward Jerusalem, and with every step they were getting more and more excited, they were gaining momentum! Why? Because they knew the great Jewish festival Passover was awaiting them in Jerusalem!(Click here to see full text, images and links)    Pastor Doug Anderson    “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, with our eyes fixed on Jesus…” (Heb. 12:1,2)Have a comment or question about today's chapter? I'm ready to hear from you, contact me here. This Sunday we're pausing our Luke series and pivoting to a four-week focus on Easter and Jesus' resurrection. It's common practice to do this during Advent to prepare for Christmas, but as a church we haven't allocated equal space and time to sit and soak in the defining feature of our faith. We're calling this series “Walking in the Way.” Walking was the default activity for a disciple of Jesus, and perhaps it will also be a welcomed reduction of the pace of life during a busy Spring season. In light of this intentional slowing down, I invite you to read our passage this week (John 11:1-44) slowly and intentionally. Read it once. Maybe listen to it on your Bible app. Maybe read through it in a different translation to see if anything interesting jumps out. It's a familiar story of the faith; Lord, help us receive it with fresh eyes and eager hearts.

Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany | John 12:1–11 In John 12:1–11, we witness an extraordinary act of devotion—Mary of Bethany anointing Jesus' feet with costly perfume. This moment, just days before His crucifixion, foreshadows His burial and reveals the depth of sacrificial love. While Mary humbly honors Christ, Judas objects, exposing a heart hardened by greed. How do we respond to Jesus? With hearts of gratitude and faith like Mary, or with doubt and self-interest like Judas? Text: Mark 9:14-26 ESV I BELIEVE; HELP MY UNBELIEF! When Jesus, Peter, James, and John came down, they saw a great crowd and scribes arguing with the rest of the disciples. Jesus inquired what they were arguing about. Out from the crowd, a man said, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” This boy has been sick since his childhood. He was oppressed by a demon that caused him to be deaf and mute and have seizures. Perhaps, there was frustration from the father and crowd when their expectations were not met. And the unbelieving scribes may have used it against them, taunting them as fake and deceivers. They even accused Jesus of being Satanic in His healing work. Upon hearing it, Jesus rebuked the disciples for their lack of faith, saying, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” Jesus is patient with the disciples most of the time. But, He was hard unto them should they refuse to accept what He has taught them. He has rebuked the Twelve for being hard-hearted (Mark 8:17) He equated Peter's words with those of Satan (Mark 8:33). Jesus also has already exposed the scribes for their ' lack of faith (Mark 3:22–30). In Matthew 17:20, Jesus reveals that the faithless generation includes both the scribes and disciples. The father was doubtful. He has just spent time with Jesus' nine followers who could do nothing for his son. Moreover, the Jewish scribes apparently argue that they do not have the power or authority to do so (v.14). yet, Jesus is understandable to him. He encourages him, “'If you can'! All things are possible for one who believes." Jesus isn't saying that we can accomplish anything we want if we have enough faith; this isn't an endorsement of the Word of Faith teachings. True faith doesn't presume that God will do what we want but that God can do what He wants (see Mark 1:40–42). Without hesitation, the father responded, "I believe; help my unbelief!" In an expression of honest vulnerability, the father declares what faith he has alongside his doubt and fear. Definitely, He is our example of someone who understands God wants all of us, not just the bold confidence of the Syrophoenician woman (Mark 7:24–30), or the adoration of Mary of Bethany (John 12:3). He also wants the limitations of Peter (John 21:15–19) and the terrible miscalculations of Paul (1 Tim 1:13). Simply put, Jesus wants whatever else we have in our hearts, both good and bad. We can't hide anything from Him anyway. Jesus expelled the demon completely. "You deaf and mute spirit," he said, "I command you, come out of him and never enter him again." A person who is freed from a demon can expect the demon to reappear with other spirits (Mat 12:43–45). But it's safe to assume this demon obeyed Jesus' command not to ever afflict the boy again. ------------------------- Visit and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram

John 12:1-8 ESV Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. 3 Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, 5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. 8 For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” IT IS NOT A WASTE Here, Jesus is being treated to a dinner in the home of a man named Simon (Mark 14:3–11), in the town of Bethany (John 12:1). This is to celebrate Jesus' raising of Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha (John 11:38–43). Each of these siblings, in a way, does represent a mode of service Christians can emulate in their lives, does it not? Martha provided a tangible service. Lazarus was a living demonstration of Christ's influence. Whereas, Mary did sacrifice and worship. She anointed Jesus' feet with a spikenard oil. A spikenard, is an oil made from plants grown in northern India. lf a modern-day liter. A bit less than a liter, this was valued at some 300 denarii, nearly an entire year's wages for a common laborer. And as a woman of the ancient Middle East, Mary may not owned a property or land. Thus, without question, it was a substantial part of her life savings. Moreover, the container, made of the marble-like stone called alabaster (Mark 14:3), showed how valuable this ointment was. And this was used all at once, to anoint one man! Should we not give our all and best to Jesus too? [see Ecc 9:10] To some people in the room, Judas' complaint that it was a waste makes sense, and Mark expressed how others echoed it (see Mark 14:3–11). In no way it was a waste. In fact, anything we do for Jesus with the right motive glorifies God. But, Judas' assessmentwas a well-dressed lie. His real anger is in seeing money "wasted" on Jesus instead of going into the disciple's communal money-bag, where he can steal some of it (John 12:6). It was a manipulative lie for Judas had no interest in the poor, but he knows how to disguise his real intentions. How many times people today are deceived by charlatans who use Christian jargons to make themselves appear truthful? Jesus, for His part, will defend Mary's actions in light of His impending death (John 12:7–8). Whether Mary fully understands what is about to happen, what she has done carries a prophetic element. This Mary is described elsewhere as an avid student of Jesus (Luke 10:38–42). This privilege to honor Christ, as Mary did, was once in a lifetime. Her act resulted in an example that's been preserved in the very Word of God, to be cherished for all time (Mark 14:6–11). ----------------------- Visit and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram

Leaving Laodicea

“I am the Resurrection and the Life”We have been talking about the Higher Christian Life for quite some time. And today, we will discover Jesus pointing to this manner of life, the “abundant life” as He called it in John 10:10, while He was trying to encourage Martha at the tomb of her brother, Lazarus. Do you remember the story? If so, we will see Jesus offering us a life truly worth living and not one of mere existence, of just being alive. It's the difference between experiencing an exhilarating life of wonder and joy or an artificially sustained life, like a comatose patient on life support. One is truly living, the other is just being alive— barely. Let me elaborate. When Jesus received word of Lazarus' illness, He waited two more days before heading to Bethany (John 11:6). But by that time, it was too late, four days too late (John 11:17). Lazarus had died and was already buried. For Lazarus' sisters, all hope of a healing was gone, buried just like their brother. For them, Jesus arrived late, the curtain had closed, and their hope was as lifeless as their brother. Both Mary and Martha were in mourning. When Martha heard Jesus had finally arrived, she ran to meet Him and uttered the pain she held in her heart. She said, almost like an accusation, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died” (John 11:21). Jesus, trying to encourage her, said, “Your brother will rise again.” But unable to see the big picture, Martha responded, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last days” (John 11:23-24). It was almost like she was saying, “But what help is that to me now? I know I will see him in heaven, but I need to see him now. And if You would have been here, this would not have happened.” It was at this point Jesus spoke these life-changing words. “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believe in Me, thought he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” – John 11:25-26. Great question for each of us as well. Do we believe His words? And if so, what does He mean by live? Does it mean a longevity of years, like “eternal life” (John 3:15) or “everlasting life” (John 3:16)? Or could it also mean something else? Let's look at the three times in His statement that Jesus uses the words life, live, and lives, and see if we can discover something wonderful about the resurrected life He offers. But What Kind of Life Does Jesus Offer? In Jesus' words to Martha, He purposely used two different Greek words for life and live. They are zōḗ and záō and they each reveal a different dimension of the life He offers each of us. Let's look at the definition of these two words: First, zōḗ.  The word zōḗ refers to “physical life and existence as opposed to death and nonexistence.” It is the most common word for life and conveys what we assume today when we think of eternal life— life that does not end. Yet, it says little about the quality of that life, only that life exists. Next, the word záō means “to live, to pass one's life, to live in a certain way or manner.” This word reveals more about the type of life one leads than the fact they will live forever or have life. But it also means “to live unto God and be devoted to Him, to live a life characteristic of a resurrected life.” And, by implication, to “live and prosper, to be blessed, and to live satisfied in Him.” Or, as we would call it, to live the Higher Christian Life or the “abundant life” Jesus promised (John 10:10). With this background, let's look at the words of Jesus one more time. “I am the resurrection and the life (zōē). He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live (záō). And whoever lives (záō) and believes in Me shall never die. Do you...

SERIES DETAILS: In this series, we are going to be looking at the last night Jesus spent with His disciples. Jesus spent the last few hours He had with His disciples to teach them and give them some words of encouragement. In less than 24 hours Jesus would be arrested and crucified. Into the BookBelieve in the Exceptional SaviorRead or WatchIt's amazing how a short, carefully crafted piece of paper can stand between you and employment in a competitive job market. What makes your résumé stand out from the crowd? What qualifications or work history would "seal the deal" and get you that new job?In this week's readings, we'll see Jesus' extraordinary qualifications on display. But unfortunately, despite all his marvelous works, he continues to face rejection at every turn.Jesus the HealerOn Monday (John 9), Jesus passes a man born blind. And after spitting on the ground to make some mud, he rubs the man's eyes, tells him to wash in the pool of Siloam, and he returns with his sight (John 9:6-7)! Everyone was shocked at his healing, but the Pharisees were skeptical. After questioning the man and his parents, they cast him out of the synagogue (John 9:13-34).Why wasn't the blind man's healing enough to convince the religious leaders?Jesus the ShepherdOn Tuesday (John 10), Jesus addresses the Pharisees. He calls himself "the good shepherd" who brings abundant life, laying down his life for the sheep (John 10:11). Unlike the hired hand who runs at the sight of danger, he's committed to protecting his flock (John 10:13). He says that "I and the Father are one," (John 10:30), which almost pushes the Jews to stone him for blasphemy. Are you listening to the Shepherd's voice?Jesus the ResurrectionOn Wednesday (John 11), Jesus' good friend Lazarus gets sick and dies (John 11:1-16). Martha and Mary — Lazarus' sisters — come to get Jesus. And after he tells them that their brother will rise again, he says, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live" (John 11:25). And when Jesus calls him to come out of the tomb, Lazarus walks out – four days after his death (John 11:38-44)!How does Jesus' reaction to Lazarus' death help you connect with him?Jesus the KingOn Thursday (John 12), Mary anoints Jesus with oil in Bethany (John 12:1-8) before entering Jerusalem on a donkey. The crowds praise him, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" (John 12:13). He prepares the crowds for his upcoming death (John 12:20-36), and though many still wouldn't believe (John 12:37-43), he reiterated his mission to save the world (John 12:47).Why do you think the people went from shouting "Hosanna!" to "Crucify him!" in only a few days?Jesus the ServantFinally, on Friday (John 13), Jesus retreats from the crowds for an intimate Passover meal with his disciples. He washes all their feet in a shocking turn, showing them an example of what real service looks like (John 13:1-12). He tells them to "love one another just as I have loved you" (John 13:34). But there's already trouble among them, as Judas will soon betray him (John 13:21-30), and Peter will soon deny him (John 13:36-38).Does Jesus washing Judas' feet impact how you treat those who hurt you?Support the Show

MARY MAGDALENE Introduction ➢ Related Scriptures: Matthew 27:56, 61; 28:1; Mark 15:40, 47; 16:1-19; Luke 8:2; 24:10; John 19:25; 20:1-18.• Sex worker, saint, sinner, witness, wife? • Before the cross, she is found only once in the Gospel tradition: Luke’s notices that she had been possessed by seven demons but cured by Jesus. • She and other women provide Jesus financial support. Her Name • A popular first century name.• She is distinguished from the other Mary(s) by the name Magdalene. Her Identity • In the gospels several women named Mary come into the story of Jesus. • Mary the mother of Jesus (Luke 1:26-35) • Mary of Bethany (John 11) • Mary the mother of James and Joseph (Mark 15:40) • Mary the wife of Clopas (John 19:25) Her Home • Magdala means “tower” or “castle,” and in the time of Christ was a thriving, populous town on the coast of Galilee about three miles from Capernaum. • Magdala was also the home of Jewish leader Yosef ben Matityahu (later known as historian Josephus Flavius). First Meeting (Luke 8:1-3) • Luke introduces several women whom Jesus cured and who then followed him and supported him “out of their means.” • Among them is Mary Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone forth (c.f. Mark 16:9). At the Last Supper? • There is a debate whether the effeminate figure to Jesus’s right was in fact Mary Magdalene. • The significance of her seat lies in the prized position above the twelve male apostles. The Controversy • Since 1969, when the Catholic Church admitted that it had mistakenly identified Mary Magdalene as a sex worker, the call for women in church leadership positions grew louder. The Crucifixion Accounts • Mary appears in all four Crucifixion scenes (Mark 15:40; Matt. 27:56; Luke 23:49; John 19:25), and in all the lists, her name is given first. The Resurrection Accounts • Mark’s scene is ironic that she comes to anoint the body, but it is too late (Mark 14:8). • In Matthew’s account she comes to “watch” the tomb when she experiences as angelophany. She runs to report the Resurrection and is greeted by Jesus (28:9-10) and receives a commission. • Luke diminishes her role by emphasizing the male disciples. The Johannine Garden Account • In John, there is only one woman at the tomb, not three. • Mary runs to Peter and the Beloved Disciple (20:2) to announce the empty tomb. She speaks in the plural. Why “we”? • Mary sees two angels where Jesus was lain (20:12). • Mary supposes to see the gardener. It is Jesus and she clings to him (20:17). The Symbolism • The garden reference suggests Eden; according to Ambrose and Augustine, given that woman was the source of sin, she first receives the cure. Non-Biblical Accounts • The Acts of Philip • The Gospel of Thomas • The Gospel of Philip • The Gospel of Mary Magdalene • Ecclesiastical History of Zacharias Rhetor Questions to Consider • Without Mary Magdalene’s vision of the risen Christ, could Christianity have survived? • Why are there such strong desires on the part of many to depict Mary Magdalene as a prostitute? As Jesus’ lover or wife? • Do the Gnostic texts have any historical credibility? How might one tell?

Just as Jesus called for Mary, He calls for us by name. Our response to Jesus should be immediate like hers. This is for our benefit and is a witness to those who are watching. He calls us to spend time with Him because He loves us unconditionally.

Episode 45 Worship in Spirit and Truth Jesus said the hour has now come when true worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth, and that the Father is seeking such to worship Him. What does it mean to worship God in spirit and truth? How important is that to God? Are we fulfilling the desire of our Father in this? Most Christians today would readily acknowledge that worship is a very important part of the Christian life. But many times our understanding or expression of worship to God is shallow or even wrong. It is often confined to an hour of singing in a special place and led by a single person. I would encourage us to examine the scriptures again for a fresh understanding of what kind of worship is pleasing to God, so that we may not fail to give God that which He desires and deserves. • What is Worship? o To do reverence or homage, by prostration, pay Divine homage, adore o “The overflow of a grateful heart, under a sense of Divine favor” o “The outpouring of a soul at rest in the presence of God” o “The occupation of the heart, not with its needs or blessings, but with God Himself” o “The upspring of a heart that has known the Father as Giver, the Son as Savior, and the Holy Spirit as the indwelling Guest” • The first mention of worship in scripture (Abraham in Gen. 22:5) o Initiated by God (a word from God) o Conditioned by faith (Heb. 11:17) o Involves sacrifice o Separation unto God o Renunciation of self o Glorifies God o Blessing to the worshiper • Distinction between prayer, praise, and worship o Prayer—occupation of the soul with needs o Praise—occupation of the soul with its blessings o Worship—occupation of the soul with God Himself • Worship of Christ by the “wise men” (Matt. 2:1-12 • By Mary of Bethany (John 12:1-11) A classic on the subject of worship by Gibbs https://www.amazon.com/Worship-Christians-Occupation-P-Gibbs/dp/1593871643 • Additional resources at  http://www.ntchurchsource.com/ • Theme song “Will Your Anchor Hold” sung by J. Coming back from what amounts to an unannounced hiatus, Thomas and Pastor Brown (who recorded this episode just prior to Lent) jump into Jesus' road to his passion and death. He gets back to Bethany (a town coming under increased scrutiny now that Lazarus has been raised), gets some pre-embalming (much to Judas' ire), and then pulls a Solomon on his way into Jerusalem.
