We all know that looks can be deceiving. Not everyone or everything is exactly as it seems to our first judgment. Many times, small things can have large effects. For example, tiny bacteria are so small that we can't even see them, but they help us digest our food, break down garbage, and keep the world clean. We don't notice they're there, but if they were gone, we would know it. So, big things can have big effects, but you should never underestimate something small.  On today's episode, enjoy the following:“The Most Powerful Being in the World” by Antonio Rocha from Cross Roads: Stories from Brazil & the World (12:07)Antonio Rocha (pronounced haw-sha) is originally from Brazil. He came to the United States to study mime with mime master Tony Montanaro. Since then he has blended mime with verbal storytelling to enhance his tales. This story is about two proud rats. They are proud, not in a bad way, but of their daughter, and they want what's best for her. So, when it's time for her to get married, they want to find the most powerful being in the world to be her husband. Thus begins their quest, traveling all around, to find the most powerful being to be their daughter's husband.  “What is Strength?” by Len Cabral from It's How You Say It (5:15)Len Cabral descends from Cape Verde, a country located off the coast of Africa. Since 1976 he has been telling stories and has garnered international acclaim. He tells stories from Africa, the Caribbean, Cape Verde, and the rest of the world, including his own original tales. This one is about a contest. In order to find out who is the strongest, the animals hold a competition. All the animals are there, and many of them are very strong. But when the human takes a turn, the animals have to ask, is that really strength? Or is it something far more sinister. “The View from Here” by Allison Downey from Allison Downey: a Selection of Stories and Songs (5:56)Allison Downey has lived and traveled all over the world, collecting a rich variety of stories. Recently, she has been recovering from treatment for a rare form of cancer, which she talks about on her blog. She says, in her own words, “...as I'm returning to the stage...I really come with a renewed strength of spirit and a deeper vision and voice.” This story details the events of an outdoor adventure she had as a fifteen year old when she found herself at a camp in Wyoming. The group she is with goes rock climbing and she has to learn a few things in order to succeed after getting stuck on a cliff face. “Lost in the Ooze” by Ted Fink from The Flight of the Spielkamrad & Lost in the Ooze (6:09)It's probably safe to say that most of us have learned about the dangers of addiction. And addiction can happen with a lot of things, not just illegal drugs. But sometimes we can use a reminder to be careful of things that make us forget about things that should be important. Ted Fink started writing poetry when he was just five. From there, his writing grew to encompass stories, music and other things. His tale “Lost in the Ooze” was designed to help listeners understand the perils of addiction and why it can be harmful. “Bellybuttons” by Bill Harley from The Town Around the Bend (5:10)When Bill Harley was young, he wanted to become the second baseman for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. Instead, he became a storyteller and songsmith, and a good one at that. In his collection The Town Around the Bend, he tells tales about a town with the peculiar name of Around the Bend. Lots of peculiar things happened there, and in this story, he tells about a belly button mix up. In it, you'll learn just what the point of a belly button is, and what happens when you don't have one. “Sundays on Walker's Bend” by Bruce Walker from Good for your Soul (8:25)Bruce Walker says of himself “I am a husband, father, grandfather, minister, entrepreneur, teacher, performer, and pretty nice guy.” That list is certainly respectable, and his stories are more than respectable as well. He was Born in Oklahoma City but moved to Alabama and has lived there ever since. In this story he tells about growing up with his family on Walker's Bend.

Happy Thanksgiving from The Apple Seed! Wherever you're gathering this year we hope you'll take an opportunity to not only give thanks for the blessings in your life, but that you'll also share memories with or about the people that you love. And we'll provide the stories to help spark those memories. So put together a plate of turkey, yeast rolls, pumpkin pie, and an etrog, and get ready for stories from Bruce Walker, Bill Harley, Linda Goodman, Kevin Kling, and Martha Hamilton.  On today's episode, enjoy the following:"Pie Made of Pumpkin" by Bruce Walker from Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts (3:57) If you're looking to bake your favorite pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving but can't track down the recipe card, here's what you do: just memorize this song from Bruce Walker which is basically step-by-step directions on how to make this festive dessert.  "Yeast Rolls" by Bill Harley from Nothing For Granted (9:27)We're going to move from that food song to a food story from Apple Seed-favorite, Bill Harley. Have you ever been guilty of eating too much of a beloved side dish? How about the entire side dish? No judgment here, especially if it's something as good as yeast rolls.  "I Need An Etrog" by Linda Goodman from Pass It On: A Journey Through the Jewish Holidays in Story and Song (8:31)If you were to ask someone 'What does Thanksgiving mean to you?', they might mention something about the food. But really at the heart of this holiday is gathering, being together with people you love. That will certainly ring true with this next story. And although it's not about Thanksgiving (it takes place during the Jewish holiday of Sukkoth) the elements are the same. Sometimes we focus too much on securing particular food items for our feast that we lose sight of what's really important.  "Harvest" by Kevin Kling from Wonderlure! (6:20)What starts out as a humurous story about young Kevin Kling's reluctance to slaughter pigs that he's named turns into a rather sweet memory of Kevin's grandmother.  "Why Anansi Has a Small Waist" by Martha Hamilton (with Mitch Weiss) from Stories in My Pocket Tales Kids Can Tell (3:15)Ever wonder why spiders have small waists? You're going to find out in this story about Anansi, the 'Trickster', who, when she doesn't receive an invitation to either of the local village's harvest festivals, devises a plan to find out when and where they will occur, that also includes attending both.

Often in life when family is involved in an expedition, a wild story arises. Whether it's born from a strangers story heard at the grocery store, a bond formed between two sisters, or an accidental trip across country boarders, family can make any situation that much more exciting. Today on The Apple Seed we will hear several stories from Bruce Walker including ‘Stories heard from the Checkout Line' and ‘Uncle Willis' that include some fantastical tales about life. We will also hear the stories ‘Queen Mother Summer Palace' by Mary Wright, ‘Fay and Bri Cation' by Paul Strickland, ‘Shadow of a Cowboy' by Andy Hedges, and ‘How They broke Away to go to the Rutabaga Country' performed by a cast from Sandburg Out Loud, sure to put a smile on your face. On today's episode, enjoy the following:“Stories Heard from the Checkout Line” by Bruce Walker from It Started Like This (7:50)To kick off today's episode, Bruce Walker shares a compilation of stories revolving around grocery stores. You'll hear "How May I Help You?" and "Oh the Stories You'll Hear", a couple of stories full of hope and understanding.  “Queen Mother Summer Palace” by Mary Wright from Mary Wright Stories (15:02)  To celebrate her 40th birthday, Mary Wright goes to Thailand to visit her sister. What starts out as a normal outing to the Queen Mother Summer Palace - a beautiful castle/garden - quickly turns into an accidental adventure.  “Fay and Bri Cation” by Paul Strickland from Ain't True and Uncle False (6:28)The phrase ‘joined at the hip' takes on new meaning in this tall tale from Paul Strickland. Fay and Bri Cation are two sisters who hold hands for so long that the skin on their hands fuse together.  “Uncle Willis” by Bruce Walker from It Started Like This (3:22)Family stories are sometimes a wild ride and this one is no exception. This story is about a man true to his literal word. You'll definitely want to hear how Uncle Willis gives his wife a ‘house warming' for her new brick house. “Shadow of a Cowboy” by Andy Hedges from Shadow of a Cowboy Audio (6:34)Here's a nice, relaxing song from Andy Hedges, about a man reminiscing and day-dreaming about the cowboy lifestyle and the old west.   “How They Broke Away to go to the Rutabaga Country” by Carol Birch, Bill Harley, Angela Lloyd, and David Holt from Sandburg Out Loud (7:43)In this collaborative story from Carol Birch, Bill Harley, Angela Lloyd, and David Holt, a father, a daughter and a son who grow tired of their home. So they sell all they own and hop on a train headed to the farthest place they can go - Rutabaga country, where pigs wear bibs.

Diana Brainard’s passion for understanding our stories and experiences initially led her to study comparative literature in college; but sometime during her junior year abroad in Lyon, she realized she could pursue her passion through medicine, a journey that’s taken her from academic infectious diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital through her current role as Senior Vice President and head of virology at Gilead Sciences. Born in Chicago, Diana’s family moved to Brooklyn when she was one, then to the Connecticut suburbs when she was seven.  A precocious student, she skipped an early grade, found she loved the Montesorri school she attended in New York, but grew bored once she started school in Connecticut.  All this changed when she found her way to Hotchkiss Boarding School in 10th grade, and felt as if her mind was awakened – in large measure, she says, because of a number of exceptional teachers.  A former tennis player, she picked up squash, and was subsequently recruited by colleges for her skill (and would later become an “academic all-Ivy selection” for her abilities as both student and athlete). Like so many other Tech Tonics guests – including Zak Kohane, Atul Butte, and Ken Mandl — Diana attended Brown, and enthusiastically dove into advanced classes in a range of subjects.  The humanities, with its intimate seminars and engaged teachers, proved especially appealing, so she majored in comparative literature and late elected to spent her Junior Year abroad in France.  Diana started to envision a future in graduate school, and then perhaps as a literature professor. To her surprise and disappointment, Diana’s experience in France left her disillusioned and she found herself drawn, through literature, into medicine.  She was moved by Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain, and by the poetry of Williams Carlos Williams, and soon she began a correspondence with Harvard physician and author Robert Coles.  Diana ultimately applied to medical school, and attended Tulane, in New Orleans. Diana loved both the city and the medical school experience – in particular, the amount of responsibility  students were afforded during the clinical rotations at the famed Charity Hospital.  She found a similar sense of responsibility at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she continued her training, first in internal medicine (including a month taking care of patients at an understaffed clinic in Haiti), and ultimately specializing in infectious diseases. Diana’s interest in HIV in particular led her to noted physician-scientist Bruce Walker, under whose guidance she conducted complex translational research (studying HIV in mice she reconstituted with human immune cells).  She also helped set up a HIV research facility at the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Though initially contemplating a career in academic infectious diseases, and having earned a competitive K-08 NIH grant to support her efforts, she surprised many of her colleagues by deciding to join Merck, and focus on drug development.   Almost immediately, it seems, she knew she made the right decision, as she found herself surrounded by smart and talented colleagues who, like her, seemed to enjoy functioning in a culture that prized collaboration and multidisciplinary team effort rather than personal recognition. Diana’s career surged ahead at Merck, and she soon found herself with an opportunity to join an exciting clinical development team that luminary John McHutchison was just starting to assemble at Gilead, in California; she took it. Good call; Diana would serve as the clinical lead for the breakthrough hepatitis C product, Sovaldi, was one of three people at the company to present it to the FDA.  Sovaldi  turned out to be as transformative as anticipated and Diana would go on to lead the development and subsequent approval of several additional hepatitis C products.  In 2018, she was elevated to SVP of HIV and Emerging Viruses, and her remit was  expanded to include hepatitis B and C, and retitled Virology.  Just when it seemed like things couldn’t get busier, SARS-CoV-2 came along, and with it, her leadership of an explosive amount of clinical research around the Gilead product, remdesivir (Veklury).  It’s been a busy year. Full-disclosure:  Diana is also David Shaywitz’s wife – which is not only why we were able to book her, but also why we are especially delighted to welcome her to our show!  We are grateful to Manatt Health for sponsoring today’s episode of Tech Tonics.  Manatt Health integrates strategic business consulting, public policy acumen, legal excellence and deep analytics capabilities to better serve the complex needs of clients across America’s healthcare system. Bode estate in 2013.  As his passion and expertise with coins grew, Bruce made the decision to leave IBM after 25 years to pursue what many consider to be a dream job working with rare coins on a daily basis.  A frequent contributor within the numismatic press, with nearly a dozen published Op-Ed pieces in Numismatic News, Bruce continues to pursue numismatics both as a hobbyist as well as a professional.
