Interview by Kris PetersThe Australian music scene was undeniably strong in the 1990s, with bands like Blood Duster, Dreamkillers, Armoured Angel and Damaged just to name a few carving a name for themselves in that era.It was a time before the internet, where bands had to promote themselves in a vastly different way, pasting posters onto telegraph poles and spruiking their upcoming shows at other gigs in order to get their music heard. There was no easy way. It was pure persistence and willpower just getting your name out there. One of the bands to emerge from Brisbane in the early 90s was Crypt, an old-school death metal act who refused to take no for an answer.Quickly making themselves heard with their 1994 demo cassette Excruciating Agony, Crypt set about sonically dismantling all before them, with their 1998 album El Nino irrefutably painting their name onto a sonic landscape that may never be rivalled. Then Crypt disbanded, and, despite a couple of East Coast tours in 2016 and 2017, remained in limbo seemingly never to return.Well, return they have for Necrosonic Festival at Brisbane's Mansfield Tavern on August 31, with guitarist Nathan joining HEAVY to discuss the past, present and future of Crypt. We discussed Necrosonic Festival, where Crypt is set to perform their last show. Nathan reminisced about the thriving metal scene in Brisbane during the 90s, highlighting the camaraderie and social vibe among bands, plus provided insights into the upcoming 30th anniversary celebration of the demo cassette Excruciating Agony at Necrosonic by discussing plans to play the demo in full.He also shared details about the recording of a new song called Chilling Madness and the band's nostalgic collaboration with the original demo artwork artist for the new song's artwork. We also discussed their sound and where it came from, and dived deep into Crypt's past and more.Necrosonic Festival features Psycroptic, Lo!, Misery, Astrodeath, Crypt, Bulletbelt, Potion, Bloody Tyrant and more. Melbourne grindcore/death metal outfit Remains are making their way to Queensland in the near future, nailing down one of thirty spots at the inaugural Necrosonic Festival to be held at Brisbane's Mansfield Tavern on August 31.Despite forming only five years ago, Remains have quickly built a formidable reputation on the live circuit, with the vast experience of members - who have previously been in highly reputed bands such as Blood Duster, Captain Cleanoff, The Kill, Fuck I'm Dead, King and The Day Everything Became Nothing - helping Remains gain an early solid fan base until the sheer brutality of their music forced others to follow suit.HEAVY recently caught up with Tonebone to find out what Brisbane can expect. In the full interview, Tonebone talks about the atmosphere backstage at larger local festivals, who he is most looking forward to seeing, the re-emergence of the Australian metal festivals, what to expect from a Remains live performance, three songs to listen to in order to get to know the band, their style of music and how best to describe it, establishing their own identity with a collection of members from other well-known bands, new music, future plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Interview by Kris PetersIf you used only the sheer brutality of their music as a guide, it would be easy and highly probable to imagine Werewolves to be a serious metal band. Their music is soul-destroying and intense, pummelling your senses from every angle before regrouping to smash you in places you didn't even know existed. No shit. But when you listen to or read an interview with any of the three members - or even read the quotes in their press releases - then it becomes blatantly obvious that there is a plethora of riches simmering just below the surface that generally manifest themselves by way of humour or self-depreciation.Because Werewolves are not a by-the-numbers, regulated behemoth, They are a formidable force of nature with a laconic, Australian sense of humour who actually give little fucks to what is happening around them as long as they get to immortalise the problem in verse.Ten years ago a fresh and ambitious death metal outfit featuring three well-known musicians of the Australian heavy scene - Sam Bean (The Berzerker), Matt Wilcock (The Berzerker, Akercocke) and Dave Haley (Psycroptic, Ruins, Blood Duster) - boldly declared their intent to release one each year for the next decade.Fast-forward to today and Werewolves are about to successfully hit the halfway point with their fifth entry Die For Us, which will be released over several platforms starting with Bandcamp on July 12 then everywhere else from July 19.HEAVY caught up with vocalist/bass player Sam Bean last night to find out just how brutal album number five is going to be."This one's a little bit different," he measured when we asked how he was feeling about Die For Us. "It's a self-release this one, so there's been a lot of moving parts. Whereas with the other ones, we'd just roll up to each album release basically in a carriage with horses and the red carpet treatment (smiles), this time around there was a lot of moving, spinning plates that we were having to keep spinning. Normally, we'd already be on our victory lap even before the album is released. Now we're very much just staring at that date and crossing the fingers that all goes well. We're quite a bit more nervous this time around that everything happens as it should. As for the response for the album, we don't worry about that. We never worry about that. We've got a pretty heinous slab of death metal that we know is absolutely stupendous, and that the title track - the very first thing that anyone will hear when listening to the album - is just gonna knock both their socks off and then some. We're not worried about that. We're worried about the boring bullshit out back of house (laughs)."In the full interview, Sam talks more about the musical side of Die For Us, the brutality of their music and how the band gets that tough exterior, having Rok from Sadistik Exekution guest on one of the tracks, keeping up with their promise of one album a year for ten years, the pros and cons of releasing an album yourself, the term Caveman Death Metal that has been thrust upon them, maintaining the rage and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

The metal underground scene is never more alive than when the crushing brutality of a fresh extreme metal band begins to simmer deep in the underbelly.Battle lines are drawn and the diehards are quick to judge, often inadvertently forcing fledgling bands to remain in the shadows longer than they perhaps should. For, make no mistake, when you strike your first public note in defiance if the angry mob turn on you the landscape can suddenly feel more devoid of life and further away than ever before. Not that Australia's newest extremists need have worried.Boasting a pedigree of former members of Aussie metal royalty in Blood Duster, Captain Cleanoff, The Kill, Fuck I'm Dead, King, and The Day Everything Became Nothing, Melbourne outfit Remains have always had the right DNA for success.Since forming in 2019 Remains has taken a more measured approach to their art, drip feeding music recently in the lead up to their debut album Grind Til Death which is set to unleash Hell on July 15.With 18 tracks of sonic intensity packaged into just 35 minutes of playing time, Grind Til Death is an album that doesn't have to sing its own praises. The proof is right there in the listening.HEAVY caught up with frontman Tony ‘Tone Bone' Forde ahead of this Friday's album release."We've pretty much been classed as a deathgrind band, but it has a lot of elements,” he explained of the band's sound. “I've been seeing a few reviews saying there's some Swedish touches and a bit of a black metal type vibe as well. A lot of blast beats, heap of grind stuff, some cool, rocky, catchy riffs. It's very punishing to the ears."With an aggressive blending of death metal and grindcore genres, Remains music is loud, brash and unapologetic, with Forde under no illusions it won't appeal to the wider metal community.“Whether the fans like it or not it's what we do and we play what we like to play,” he shrugged. “We've been listening to this type of music for a long, long time."In the full interview, Tony talks about the album process, what they discussed as a band going into it, the singles released and if they represent the album's overall sound, having Joe Haley from Psycroptic mix and master the album, the formation of Remains from so many fan favourites, future plans and more.

It's hard to believe that around 10 years ago a native Australian bird that quietly went about its business identifying as a King Parrot was about to have its identity and status unceremoniously ripped from its majestic wings and would forevermore play second fiddle to its new namesake.Yes, people, Melbourne grindcore (for want of having to label the mayhem) outfit King Parrot this year celebrate a decade of destroying stages around not only their home country but also that of the world at large. It is a journey that has seen the band rub shoulders with and work alongside some of the biggest names in the business, but throughout the quartet have remained true to their roots and their ability to mix lashings of humor and finesse to an otherwise destructive form of music.HEAVY caught up with frontman and Carnivore of Chaos Matt Young (Youngy) to reminisce on the story so far…"It's pretty cool man,” Youngy smiled, the enormity of the occasion seemingly dawning upon him as we spoke. “Reflecting back on the last 10 years it's been a crazy sort of ride for a band doing what we do. We've been very lucky and grateful to have the opportunities we've had, and we have destroyed a lot of stages around the world (laughs). Hopefully, we can get out there a little bit over the next six months and continue doing that. The tour that we've planned is more of a gradual tour spaced out over the next six months because we figured that we wouldn't be doing much else in terms of touring overseas or anything like that so we just gave ourselves a chance - like everyone else we've had the last year off - so this gives us the opportunity to get back into things and hopefully get around the country and play some shows and see all our friends and people we haven't seen in quite some time now."King Parrot have left their mark, influence, and respect on audiences around the world, a surprising feat given the in-your-face and aggressive style of music that spews forth from the stage every time they perform. Their appeal – especially for a more extreme metal band – is universal and overwhelming, a point not lost on Youngy and the rest of the band.“Initially the idea with King Parrot was to... I guess recreate... or more pay homage to all the Aussie bands we grew up listening to and loved,” he measured, “or in Squiz's case were part of (laughs). That was the idea, to try and create a band that was really an underground sounding band, not necessarily any specific genre so to speak, but to incorporate the elements of grindcore and thrash and punk rock and hardcore stuff and put it all into a unique sounding band that was influenced by stuff like Blood Duster, Damaged, Sadistik Exekution, Alchemist, you name it, and of those bands that were there and at the forefront of the scene when we were growing up. We wanted to create our own version of that so I guess as the band developed we grew and we lost a member here and lost a member there we wanted to bring in people that were not only committed to touring but were also able to bring something to the table and the band. Having people like Squiz and Slatts - who's basically been there from the start anyway - and now Toddy as well who has been in the band a long time as well, but having those sorts of characters and people who could bring their own element and flavor without having to do anything... the beauty of King Parrot is that we're just ourselves. We don't have to put anything else on, don't have to wear a mask, or do anything other than be ourselves. I think that's probably what has held us in good stead over the years. We just do King Parrot and that's all we know how to do. You either like it or you don't. If you don't, get fucked, if you do let's party.”In the full interview Youngy runs us through some band and personal highlights over the journey, details the band's success both in Australia and overseas, talks about the upcoming anniversary tour and what to expect, hints at new music, speaks about King Parrot's continuing approach to supporting up and coming Australian bands, the balance between professionalism and levity within the band and how important both roles are and more.

Welcome to The Void 333, a new weekly show hosted by Christina Rowatt and Josh Watkins, both music lunatics with a deep love for all things heavy and unpopular culture. On this week's show, we have Pantera tour manager Guy Sykes on Pantera live in Moscow 1991 - our first "Great Moment in Rock History," Jordan McDonald of Frankie's Pizza (Sydney's most epic rock dive bar) PLUS Melbourne idiot and Blood Duster legend Jason "PC" Fuller on why live music sucks in our first "I'll Fight You" segment. Yeah, he said it. Watch on YouTube
Where to start? It is getting beyond hectic to keep pace with the heavy scene here in Australia. It feels like not a week goes by without discovering more new blood from all points of a very wide and talented spectrum. Incredible psych jams (Comacozer, Zong, Pseudo Mind Hive, Frozen Planet…1969), punishing doom and sludge (Merchant, Religious Observance, Summonus, Potion), searing heavy rock (Witchskull, Sumeru, Peeping Tom, Motherslug, Wicked City, Arrowhead) and all points in between, the scene ‘down under’ is literally overflowing and the quality is high. I’ve always felt a great deal of pride when our bands are heard and recognized around the globe. Recent years have seen bands such as Child, Riff Fist, and Powder for Pigeons playing their way around the festivals in Europe, in fact, one of our most electrifying bands is Hobo Magic and they are about to relocate to Europe and give being a touring band a red-hot crack. Arrowhead and Witchskull signing to Ripple Music and Rise Above respectively. Turtle Skull signing up with excellent Australian label Art as Catharsis. We cheer on every such success for our bands. There is a long, rich history of heavy music here which fits the ‘Doomed & Stoned’ vibe, and whilst some it has been heard I suspect much of it has flown under the radar over the years. For reference to some of our classic and much revered bands, I refer you to Christbait, Clagg, Dern Rutlidge, Budd, Thumlock, Pod People, Peeping Tom (not the Mike Patton version, this band is waaaay better and were around long before old mate Mike came along!), Pillow, Ahkmed, Warped, Blood Duster, Stiff Meat and Rollerball – a decent starting point anyway, this draws some Oz blood for you. Great news that accompanies this compilation is the resurrection of Pod People, who were previously signed to Rise Above Records and have been dormant for many years. You will find their track ‘Back to Reality’ here on the compilation, and they will be making a triumphant return at Sun Burn Festival in late 2019. Time to hit the road and get this into your speakers! A huge hell yeah to all of the bands who have contributed to the compilation, and to Billy at Doomed and Stoned for his support of the Australian scene, and scenes the world over. Thank you to all the bands for your patience, and more importantly, for bringing life and fire to the stages around the country (and beyond!). Cheers, Clint Willis Hand of Doom Radio Curator, Doomed & Stoned in Australia

"It will be the first time we will be playing all this new material for people in the regional areas," enthused Matt Young, vocalist for Australia's own hardcore legends King Parrot. "I think a lot of the places that we're playing on this tour we haven't been to for maybe a year or two for some of them. Some of the places in FNQ we've never played at. It will be the first time that some of the people have ever had a dose of King Parrot so it's pretty exciting for us."The ability to give back musically to more regional areas is important to Youngy, with memories of his own youth and experiences a driving factor behind the decision to expand out of the capital cities."It's super important," Youngy stressed. "To me growing up in a regional area myself I know how much I enjoyed and appreciated when bands made the effort to come and play in those places. I always loved it when bands like Blood Duster or Damaged or Adrenalin or Warped or Max Pelican or any of these bands that were popular when I was growing up, I loved the fact they would come and give local bands the opportunity to share the stage with them. I just think it's important to grow and develop the scene and give local bands the chance to play with bands that have done international touring and all that sort of shit. It helps make it a bit more real for them and keeps the scene alive. I know when I was young growing up that's exactly what it did for me and fuelled my drive to be able to now play in King Parrot. I really like the idea of giving back a bit."To hear the full answers to these questions plus an in-depth view of touring life, including what King Parrot do to keep themselves interested on the road, who the best band member is to have on tour as well as the most annoying, plus a typical day of life on the road King Parrot style and a bit of information on the support band Child Bite plus more, tune in to the audio above.Kris Peters

Episode #2! This week my guest is Jason Fuller (Blood Duster, The Ruiner, Goatsound Studios), ever wanted to hear a bit over an hour of conversation about Blood Duster, Metal and Recording with lots of profanities? I HAVE, so here it is. If you're easily offended, maybe skip this one, otherwise, enjoy! Jason is a song writer, performer, manager, publicist, promoter, producer, studio owner, comedian and entrepreneur. This is an action packed episode about a DIY punk rock ethos had to evolve to music business entrepreneurship in order to survive the insanely crazy music industry.
