In this episode of Musicians vs the World, we talk with Adam Lukas and James Everingham, the incredibly creative composers behind the music to the BBC's Frozen Planet II. We're going to do a deep dive into the inspiration and composition techniques they used when creating their beautiful score and we'll also chat about their experience collaborating with Norwegian singer, songwriter and record producer, Aurora in this project. TOPICS INCLUDE: · Vomiting birds and baby seals · Collaboration with Aurora · The theme should be “giving” to the rest of the score for cohesion · Creating a sound palette – what is the core of your project? · How a chord progression can grow throughout a large project · That first view of a scene…where to begin? · The more you prepare before a project, the more fun you'll have at the end of it · Working with Spitfire to create “Fractured Strings” · What does Ice Sound like in Music · Take care of your mind, and keep composing https://www.adam-lukas.com/ https://www.jameseveringham.com/ https://www.bleedingfingersmusic.com/ https://www.spitfireaudio.com/ https://frostedlens.com/musicians-vs-the-world/f/frozen-planet-ii-behind-the-music

When most orchestras commission a new work, they usually ask the composer to produce music that fits on a standard concert program, like a 10-minute overture or a 45-minute symphony. But when BBC Earth approached composers Adam Lukas and James Everingham — along with the two-time Oscar winner Hans Zimmer — to compose the score for its latest nature documentary series, Frozen Planet II, the show's producers needed six hours of music. Even for this trio of seasoned composers, that's a tall order to fill. Besides creating a sonic universe to accompany Frozen Planet II's icy, snow-capped visuals, these composers had to help fulfill the show's core mission: introducing viewers not only to the daily lives of polar bears, penguins, and snow monkeys — but also the ways climate change is compounding the difficulties they face surviving in the coldest regions of the world. "The series is tackling the issue of the climate crisis," Lukas says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "We knew we wanted to tell the stories of the animals in their habitats in a way that helps people connect with them and care about them in a genuine way. That's something Hans has spent his career being the best at." In this episode, I sit down with Lukas and Everingham to discuss the process of creating the series's score — which involved more than 100 people working for three years while navigating lockdown restrictions. They also share stories about collaborating with the legendary Zimmer, the magical time they spent in the studio with the Norwegian singer-songwriter Aurora, and how they define success. Frozen Planet II is available to stream in the U.S. on Prime Video, Vudu, and Apple TV. — Classical Post® is a leading podcast based in New York. Doug Allan is a world-renowned wildlife cameraman, with film credits for some of the most influential documentaries ever made and a trophy cabinet full of BAFTAs and Emmys. He's contributed to David Attenborough's Blue Planet and Frozen Planet, and has spent more time than nearly anyone else diving into the world's iciest oceans in search of wildlife. In this week's episode of Love Scotland, he sits down with Jackie to discuss his eventful career, including a dangerously close encounter with a walrus. He also reveals his eyewitness account of how a changing climate is affecting underwater wildlife, and some of his favourite experiences shooting in Scotland's wild places. Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, Arctic: Our Frozen Planet is another visually stunning piece by BBC Earth. Shot over the course of a year, the film transports the viewer into a world of narwhals, polar bears, caribou and more as they attempt to survive in the frozen wilderness. But with the climate changing more rapidly than ever before, can its people and wildlife keep pace? In this 1on1, we speak with polar bear expert Eric Regehr about interacting with wildlife, man's impact on the environment and slowing down climate change.

The Emmy and BAFTA-nominated Bleeding Fingers Music team, headed by Hans Zimmer, delivers an ethereal and powerful soundtrack featuring the vocals of AURORA and backed by the Reykjavík Recording Choir and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The 3-note leitmotif from the opening theme is slowly varied and carried by the waves of shifting harmonies supported by crystalline strings, metallic percussion, and contemplative brass. On the second album, the sound becomes more defined with the themes establishing themselves whilst the swirling and pulsating orchestral sound intermittently supports and drowns them.Help support our show by purchasing this album at:Downloads (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) Classical Music Discoveries is sponsored by Uber. @CMDHedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#LaMusicaFestival #CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber Please consider supporting our show, thank you!Donate (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.com This album is broadcasted with the permission of Crossover Media Music Promotion (Zachary Swanson and Amanda Bloom).

Frozen Planet II and Blue Planet II are landmark natural history series and masterclasses in climate change storytelling. Via captivating sequences, charming characters and compelling stories, the viewer is deliberately drawn into a world that they can't help but care about, before being told about the very serious threats facing it. Such powerful storytelling can have a big impact; Blue Planet II, for example, persuaded people across the world to give up single-use plastics. But how are these films made? Who crafts the stories? And how do you engage people in the climate emergency without freaking them out? At Wildscreen film festival in Bristol, host Isla sat down with film-makers Rachel Butler Scott and Yoland Bosiger, producers who have worked on both Frozen Planet II and Blue Planet II among many other series, to chat about filming in the most remote and hostile environments on earth, diving under sea ice, and connecting people to life under the waves. In today's episode, I speak with Doug Anderson, considered to be one of the world's best underwater cameramen. Doug works on primarily what are called blue chip wildlife films, which try to tell compelling stories focused on a specific animals in magnificent pristine landscapes, and have budgets in the area of $1 million per hour or more. For Doug, this has meant traveling the world to film in the world's most rugged and remote oceans for such films as BBC's Our Planet, Frozen Planet, and Life. And then more recently, David Attenborough's high profile Netflix series Our Planet. But for someone who has had such incredible career success, Doug was tremendously down to earth, and fun to talk with. And he shared stories about why it's so hard to shoot in the underwater environment, how he approaches being so close to large wild animals in the ocean, and an incredible moment of filmmaking he had off Antarctica with what is sometimes called the finger of death.Scuba Diving, Free Diving, Ocean Environmentalism, Surfing, and Marine Science. Please give us ★★★★★, leave a review, and tell your friends about us as each share and like makes a difference.

Today we talk to Dr. Chadden Hunter, an Australian wildlife biologist and filmmaker. After completing a PhD on gel-ada baboons in Ethiopia, Chadden worked with National Geographic and Discovery Channel, filming everything from tribal ceremonies in Africa to snow leopards in Pakistan. On the BBC series “Planet Earth” he became known as ‘the guy covered in bat poop', and whilst filming arctic wolves for “Frozen Planet” learnt that minus 40C was cold enough to freeze his eyes shut. His credits include Producer/Director on “Planet Earth 2” and “Seven Worlds-One Planet”. Co-Series Producer of BBC's “Wild Arabia” and National Geographic's “Cliffhangers”. Principal Director of “the “Frozen Planet” series. Collectively, the series he has worked on have won 12 Emmys and 8 Baftas. He is also the winner of the Best Film/Documentary this year in our own SCINEMA International Science Film Festival. Today's interview is hosted by Cosmos journalist Dr Deborah Devis.Find the science of everything at Cosmos Magazine website Register to watch the SCINEMA International Science Film FestivalSubscribe to Cosmos Magazine (print) or the Cosmos WeeklyRegister for the next Cosmos Briefing
In the final episode of series 2, Alok Jha talks to Polar Conservationist and explorer Prem Gill to find out what Antarctic seals and Grime music have in common. Prem is a PhD candidate leading the "Seals from Space" project with the Scott Polar Research Institute, British Antarctic Survey & World Wildlife Fund, and a researcher working on Frozen Planet. Outside of this, Prem is interested in increasing opportunities for underrepresented and disadvantaged groups in polar and conservation science. As the founder of Polar Impact and British Antarctic Survey's Diversity Champion, he has used his research to spearhead projects which attract and retain talent from non-traditional backgrounds. Additional music featured in this episode is by Marzmanj. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Chris Watson – what a dude… Part of the original lineup of the truly legendary Cabaret Voltaire (and a major influence on the early Human League during their time together in Sheffield), his destiny was always connected to his love of sound recording. He has a particular and passionate interest in recording the wildlife sounds of animals and habitats from around the world. As a freelance composer and sound recordist Chris also specialises in creating spatial sound installations which feature a strong sense and spirit of place. His television work includes many programmes in the David Attenborough ‘Life' series including ‘The Life of Birds' which won a BAFTA Award for ‘Best Factual Sound' in 1996, and as the location sound recordist for the BBC series ‘Frozen Planet' which also won a BAFTA Award for ‘Best Factual Sound' (2012). He probably possesses the world's largest library of natural world recordings, often captured using devices he himself has created. He also lectures around the world, and he and Martyn have collaborated on various projects over the years, including the astounding Sound Oasis project in the centre of Mexico City, and Martyn's Future of Sound tour featuring Illustrious's unique Immersive three-dimensional sound system. Ladies and Gentlemen – prepare to be fascinated… there can be only one Chris Watson
In this Roundtable we are joined by wildlife documentary filmmakers Rolf Steinmann and Fredi Devas. Rolf’s cinematography is featured predominantly in BBC natural history documentaries such as Planet Earth 2, Seven Worlds and A Perfect Planet. Fredi’s a producer known for his work on Planet Earth and Frozen Planet. He and Rolf have worked together on a couple of projects and will collaborate later this year on the third installment of Planet Earth. The conversation covers a range of topics, from the rigorous years-long prep that goes into these projects, to the serendipity that occurs once they’re on the field capturing the animals, as well as the ways you can discuss planet conservation with children.
Do you remember 'Planet Earth'? The original big, bold nature documentary starring David Attenborough? Of course you do. Chances are you own or owned it on DVD, because it's the highest selling DVD in the world, by FAR. My guest today is the filmmaker and director behind not just Planet Earth, but Planet Earth 2, Frozen Planet, Frozen Planet 2, Seven Worlds One Planet, and more. Yes, he is the guy that led the teams to gather the footage and put together these incredible documentaries. Would you believe Planet Earth came out 14 years ago? Which feels like a long time ago, and it is in a way, but in the scheme of things, it's just a blip on the radar. And it's easy to think that we're not doing enough or moving quickly enough to protect our planet, but how's this… that original Planet Earth series had ZERO mention of conservation or environmental issues. It was purely entertainment. Fast forward 10 years later and its sequel, Planet Earth 2, had so much environmental conservation messaging built in. It just had to, it would have been rejected otherwise. My guest today goes into detail his journey making these epic wildlife films over his career, and beautifully articulates the importance of storytelling, and presenting nature as an art form to be truly appreciated, in its own right. I've said in previous conversations with guests that we shouldn't be motivated to protect nature because we see its value to us and 'ecosystem services' it provides … that's a very selfish way of thinking of it. We should want to protect Nature just because it exists, and we love it and appreciate its beauty. This is what these big, bold, and beautiful documentaries have done for me, and this is what we talk about in this conversation today; the role of art and storytelling in our lives. We also talk about the limitations of science and why many people don't get motivated by numbers and statistics. We talk about the changes in habitat and wild places around the world and the impacts that humans are having. And, I ask some critically important questions about these films like, "What was it like when you first shot the ‘snakes and iguanas' scene?", and "When you see an animal suffering in the wild, how do you know when to intervene?" And most importantly – we talk about what YOU can do, as an individual, to have an impact because we DO all have a voice and we CAN all play a critical role in protecting wild places. So please enjoy this conversation with wildlife biologist, director, and filmmaker, Dr Chadden Hunter
Planet Earth is perfect. Everything about our world - its size, its distance from the Sun, its spin and tilt, its moon - is perfectly suited to our existence, and our planet's natural forces perfectly nurture life. A global weather system circulates and distributes fresh water to all corners of the globe, marine currents deliver nutrients to even the deepest reaches of the ocean, sunlight warms and energises everything it touches, and powerful volcanoes create and fertilise the land. As a result, there is literally no part of our planet where life can’t be found. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, A Perfect Planet is a series that will change the way we see our home. We will witness time and again how the lives of animals are driven and enabled by our planet’s great natural forces. It's a unique fusion of blue chip natural history and earth science that explains how our living planet operates. The final episode in the series looks at the dramatic impact of the world’s newest force of nature: humans - and what can be done to restore our planet’s perfect balance. Alastair Fothergill has been at the forefront of natural history programming for 30+ years, including as the longtime head of the BBC Natural History Unit, before leaving to concentrate on hands-on filmmaking. His many BBC credits include The Blue Planet, Live from the Abyss, Planet Earth, Earth and Frozen Planet. Alastair has co-directed feature-length, cinematic movies for Disney as part of their Disneynature label. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and was awarded their gold medal in 2012. Huw Cordey is the series producer and producer of A Perfect Planet’s Volcano episode. His numerous BBC Natural History Unit credits include Land of the Tiger, Andes to Amazon, Sir David Attenborough’s Life of Mammals, and Planet Earth. His other credits include The Hunt, Netflix’s first natural history series Our Planet, and Dancing with the Birds.

It seems like every network these days has a “Plus” service, There is Disney+, ESPN+, and well there are only two of them. But there are other networks putting out streaming versions, like Peacock, FoxNow, CBS All Access, and ABC All Access. This week another service joins their ranks and it's one that we are excited about, Discovery Plus! A Discovery Plus subscription allows you to stream more than 55,000 episodes of 2,500+ current and classic shows networks including HGTV, Food Network, TLC, ID, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and more. The service also includes discovery+ Originals - exciting, can't-miss series and specials you won't see anywhere else. Discovery Plus also includes exclusive streaming access to the BBC's largest natural history offering, featuring shows like Planet Earth, Blue Planet and Frozen Planet. Discovery Plus also features popular shows from A&E, History and Lifetime. Pricing There are two subscription tiers $4.99 a month with ads and $6.99 a month without. Discovery Plus has partnered with Verizon to offer free access for one year to any customer with one line on Play More or Get More Unlimited service, new Fios Internet subscribers, or new 5G Home subscribers. Device Support Discovery Plus is available on AppleTV, iOS, AndroidTV, Android, Roku, Amazon FireTV, Samsung, XBOX, and More. Discovery Plus Channels Starting January 29th Discovery Plus Channels will be available in what sounds like linear streams of the actual Discovery Channels. As of this writing Discovery Plus is solely an on demand service. Performance While most of the library is perfectly acceptable in 1080p with a mono soundtrack, there are some shows that look amazing in 4K. Think BBCs natural history content. Out of the gate there are only two shows that we could find that were 4K but we expect more as time goes on. With that said, the video looks very good and considering the nature of these types of shows, no one will complain about the quality. Areas for Improvement It would be nice if in the show information they listed the date that the show first aired on the Set Top box version of the software. Likewise it would be nice if they included information on the resolution and audio channels. There is no way to download content for offline viewing. We believe that this feature will arrive later. Finally, not all episodes of all shows are included. We do expect this to change as the services matures however.
Our last episode of 2020 welcomes one of the foremost sound recordists in the world, the great @ChrisWatsonOfficial. Chris has been obsessed with field recording since he was young, but his career began in the 80s when he started working for television. Since then, his work has taken him around the world, recording the sounds of animals and nature for documentaries like Frozen Planet and The Life of Birds, alongside Sir David Attenborough. His solo career is a vast archive of sounds and textures recorded for the BBC, as well as his own original music. In this conversation, we discuss field recording, the strange sounds of nature, and his unique process of capturing the world around him. ++ Intro and outro music: "El Divisadero" - Chris Watson (2011) Sounds: "The Dawn Chorus" - Chris Watson (2014) "Vatnajökull" - Chris Watson (2003) "Glastonbury Ocean Soundscape" - Chris Watson (2019) "The Wire" - Chris Watson (2016) "Haefest" - Chris Watson (2013) "Aguane" - Chris Watson (2008) Photo by Gavin Thurston

Two cold callers feature in this episode. Jennifer Langston from Ontario in Canada sent this message to curiouscases@bbc.co.uk: "My husband has just taken up cold water swimming and he'll swim in temperatures as low as 6 degrees Celsius. I worry that it's too cold for him, but he claims that 'swimming in cold water is good for you', which drives me bonkers. Can you tell us if there is any scientific proof behind this?” Adam takes a trip to his local lido and asks the locals why they get a kick out of a chilly winter dip. Meanwhile, Hannah calls the Antarctic to talk to meteorologist Richard Warren about the perils of a frozen beard. Our second cold caller, Sarah Dudley, asks why women get cold feet in bed. Thermal physiologist Heather Massey is on hand with the answer. But when it comes to the natural world, other animals are masters of sub-zero living. Frozen Planet producer Kathryn Jeffs, from the BBC's Natural History Unit, explains why polar bears are perfectly designed for the Arctic. And we discover why Paddington Bear is better suited to Peru. Presenters: Hannah Fry, Adam Rutherford Producer: Michelle Martin
