Join Mikael and I as we talk about the bands newer singles, which at the time were the precursor to the album we now know will be Endtime Signals, and how it's been slow releasing singles over time. Mikael reflects on recently turning 50 and some universal truths he may have come to in his time traveling the world. We look back on 30 years of Dark Tranquility, and what the band means to him now versus what it did when they started. Mikael also gives us an update on a few of his other various projects and more in this quick chat with the Dark Tranquility frontman. WolfTalk: Podcast About Audio Programming (People, Careers, Learning)
In this podcast episode, I was very pleased to guest Linus Corneliusson: a mixing engineer and editing assistant at Fascination Street Studios who has shifted towards audio plugin development.I met Linus (and his colleague Jacek) at the Audio Developer Conference 2022 and he's definitely one of the most friendly and funny people in the community. What is even more amazing, he's worked in the studio with top-notch heavy metal bands, like James LaBrie, Soilwork, DragonForce, Haken, Leprous, Dark Tranquility, Between the Buried and Me, and Fates Warning (basically most of the major names in the progressive metal genre). In the podcast, we discus how Linus started creating simple audio plugins on the side which led him to pursuing a full-blown career as an audio programmer for Bogren Digital. We also discuss tools, tips, and resources he used and recommends for starting in audio programming. Are you a mixing engineer looking for a way to transition into audio development? Are you seeking advice on which path to take and which resources are the best to reach out for? Do you need inspiration and motivation? Then this episode is for you!Note: If you like the podcast so far, please, go to Apple Podcasts and leave me a review there. You can do so on Spotify as well. It will benefit both sides: more reviews mean a broader reach on Apple Podcasts and feedback can help me to improve the show and provide better quality content to you. S6E13 kicked off at 19h00 sharp on 30 March 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio. The show started a bit differently with a track called ‘City Lights' by Motionless In White, from there normality was restored with Scorpions and Motörhead. We went back to Germany for 'Buck Dich' from Rammstein and then shifted to the USA for some Aerosmith, and a track on the Get a Grip album titled 'Walk on Down'. Follow the list below for the deatils. In terms of highlights we had the brand new Metallica, title track of their forthcoming album 72 Seasons. It is wonderful, if you don't like it then I gotta say maybe you never liked really liked Metallica, maybe you should admit they are just not for you. The weekly interview was with Ross Harding and it was very cool to catch up with him and discuss his brand new track ‘Everything is Black'. The Ultimate Challenge this week looked at 4 albums from 2000. The candidates were Iron Maiden – Brave New World, Linkin Park – Hybrid Theory, Disturbed – The Sickness, and In Flames – Clayman. Iron Maiden was the clear winner this week, Hybrid Theory did next best. The Immortals slot was awarded to Judas Priest and we basked in the glow of ‘Victim of Changes'. The Punk part was filled by The Stranglers, Sex Pistols and UK Subs, this to celbrate my brand new Stranglers T-Shirt, this is a bucket list shirt and the story behind it is buried near the end of the show. We went out heavy with Dark Tranquility and Parkway Drive. Artists featured: Motionless In White, Scorpions, Motörhead, Rammstein, Aerosmith, Nickelback, Volbeat, Buckcherry, The Rolling Stones, The Black Crowes, Nita Strauss & Alice Cooper, Hatebreed, Metallica, Hellfighter, Queensrÿche, The Longshot, The L.A. Maybe, Jimi Hendrix, Dan Patlansky, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, John Mellencamp, Ross Harding, Dave Hause, Annihilator, Rival Sons, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Linkin Park, Disturbed, In Flames, The Stranglers, Sex Pistols, U.K. Subs, Fokofpolisiekar, Kid Rock, Ozzy Osbourne, Dark Tranquillity, Parkway Drive The Story of Rock and Roll. We kicked episode 6 with a track called ‘Burning For You' a cover of a great track by Blue Öyster Cult, very well done here by Iced Earth. The show then got heavy with Killswitch Engage and Annihilator, with ‘Desperate Times' and 'Set the World On Fire' respectively. Both of these fall into the TSORR Songs that could be about South Africa category. Accept and Sinner gave us a taste of German metal and then we had Thundermother out of Sweden. There was a great little SA music segue early in the show where we checked out Jack Hammer Band with a pre-released track called 'As I Turn Away' and then a band out of Sekunda called Pilgrim South. Their new track 'Old Man Moonshine went down well. From there we were into familiar territory with Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Def Leppard. my love affair with Def Leppard's Mutt Lange produced Hi 'N' Dry album continues, we listened to 'Lady Strange'. Manic Street Preachers and a new-ish band I am not too familiar with called St. Aurora changed the pace a bit and then we started to delve into this week's Ultimate Challenge, 4 albums released in 1980 and you can only choose one. The albums selected were Judas Priest - British Steel, Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell, Motörhead - Ace of Spades, and ACDC - Back in Black. the votes came in but in the end, it was one-way traffic with the winner of this week's Ultimate Challenge going to Back In Black. The Immortal track was Gun ‘n' Roses with Estranged and we kept our punk confined to the USA with Iggy Pop, The Distillers, and Weezer. I had some problems with Brody Dalle squashed in the middle. This week I discovered Doomsday Outlaw, this track called ' Is This The End of Everything' features the kind of guitar tone and phrasing that I absolutely love. Talking guitar, a track off the new Winery Dogs with Richie Kotzen, Bily Sheehan, and Mike Portnoy hit the stop. Girish and the Chronicles are just simply blazing, what a band. We ended heavy with Ablaze My Sorrow off their new EP, and Phantom Days by Dark Tranquility. The Black Dahlia Murder, Killswitch Engage, In Flames. UU. junto a bandas como Deftones, Thrice, Dredg, Funeral for a Friend y Story of the Year.

Episode 34 of Season 5 kicked off on 25 August 2022 at 7 pm on Rebel Rock Radio. ACDC got us out the blocks with a track off Power Age called ‘Gone Shooting, We stayed in that style of rock and checked out The LA Maybe, a band out of the Carolinas, and an awesome track called 'Sucker Punch'. In recognition of the fact that the world is pretty fucked at the moment we took a listen to ex-Hanoi Rocks and glam icon Michael Monroe with a track called ‘Junk Planet'. Then we got heavy with Burn The Priest, the band that were Lamb of God before they became Lamb of God and a Melvins cover called 'Honey Bucket'. Then we followed on from last week with another track off Bring Me The Horizon's incredibly good album Sempiternal. One of the highlights of this show was an awesome track by SA band Fear of Falling, this was a new single they released called ‘All My Time'. SA music is world-class, always has been always will be. We took in some Metallica off Kill ‘Em All and then changed the tone with The Offspring and a track called 'Self Esteem'. Noodles on guitar got some love for his guitar sound. Ibanez and Pitbull Amps are apparently the secrets. 25 August is famous for being the birthday of two of the greatest rock stars the world has ever known, two guys who had a huge influence on me personally as a kid discovering this awesome music. I am talking about Gene Simmons and Rob Halford, to celebrate their birthdays, 73 and 71 respectively we took a listen to Gene with 'God of Thunder' off kiss Alive II and Rob with 'Victim of Changes' off Unleashed in the East. Those two albums got played to death when I was growing up and I used Kid Rocks' anthemic 'Still Something' off his latest album Bad Reputation to hammer home the point that in the 70s and 80s music rock music was special. From there it was Tom Petty followed by Bruce Springsteen with a lovely sentiment in his track “Further On (Up The Road) off The Rising. God remember that hey?, 9-11, seems like a lifetime ago and it took the Boss to put it all in perspective as only he can. The show went heavy again with a new band called The Halo Effect, made up of ex-members of In Flames and Mikael Stanne from Dark Tranquility, it's well worth a listen, the album is called Days of the Lost. There was no way we were going anywhere without taking another track off the stupendous new Arch Enemy album, Deceivers, the track we heard was ‘Spreading Black Wings', from there is was My Chemical Romance and Oasis time and a bit of Billy idol thrown in for good measure. The end of the show was a bit self-indulgent and took us back to some good jols in Cape Town, the scene was set with Kobus!, The Uninvited with 'The Poultry Christ' and Fokofpolisiekar with some Neil Young thrown in. Kobus! with 'Die Volk Van Main' is a very special song, Theo Crous and Francois Blom got it right here. The only huge disappointment with all this was that after Neil Young I explained how we used to use Tom Waits to clear the Whammy Bar in Cape Town and then I said cheers and goodnight and I assume that I didn't hit the mic button so we have a 60 min silence and no Cheerio until Tom Waits takes us out with 'Mr Siegal. Sorry about that. Artists featured: ACDC, The L.A. Maybe, U.D.O., Michael Monroe, Warrant, Adrenaline Mob, Burn the Priest, Bring Me the Horizon, Fear of Falling, W.A.S.P., Metallica, The Offspring, Great White, Baton Rouge, Kiss, Judas Priest, Kid Rock, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen, Jasper Dan, The Halo Effect, Texas Hippie Coalition, Arch Enemy, My Chemical Romance, Oasis, The Professionals, Billy Idol, Stiff Little Fingers, The Distillers, Kobus!, The Uninvited, Fokofpolisiekar, Neil Young, Tom Waits
Today we are going to be talking a brand new Swedish melodic death metal band called The Halo Effect. This is their debut album titled Days of the Lost. For those who don't know, this band is made up of all the old members of In Flames and the vocalist of Dark Tranquility. I'm going to declare this as my favorite album of the year so far and give The Halo Effect - Days of the Lost a well-deserved 10 out of 10! The first track is called "Shadow Minds" which begins with a slight buildup with a pitch harmonic note being played in the opening riff which ends up also being the main riff. Any fan of the band Dark Tranquility will appreciate the volume level of Mikael Stanne's vocals. Every musician in the group gets to shine evenly throughout the entire duration. The main calming guitar riff preformed by both Jesper Strömblad and Nicles Engelin is second to none when it comes to creating something totally memorable. The third song is called "The Needless End" which is honestly more reminiscent of Lunar Strain or The Jester Race as far as the skipping fret notes seem to flow with the guitars. They fully managed to once again capture lightening in the bottle. I even enjoy the musical pauses in this particular song. The classic stop and start trick is used hear and only the most in-sync of musicians can pull that off without it sounding corny or generic. Next up we got a song titled "Conditional" which will almost certainly remind listeners of mid-era Dark Tranquility records such as: Character, Fiction and The Gallery. I'm sure many will even find a way to make connections with Skydancer as well. "In Broken Trust" gives us our first taste of clean singing from Mikael. It sounds as though it would be a hit song if this type of music was more accepted by the general public. If only rock radio stations would play this kind of music during graveyard shirt hours. It would be a much better world. The clean singing doesn't wear out it's welcome as it is very short-lived and only serves as a course. "Gateways" is yet another stellar tune due to its groovy guitar riff. Its another defining track and gives people the verbal opportunity to describe this album as "Riffs For Days". When people say that, this is what they mean. This one starts out slow with some undistorted guitar picking and Mikael's raspy voice followed by a lovely little tune. This structure repeats but it isn't repetitious at all; in fact, the guitar solo in this is very dream like and the song closes with sort of that Insomnium kind of vibe. Then we have a song called "A Truth Worth Lying For" which will get you nodding your head with those funky bass lines performed by bassist Peter Iwers. This song is also the second time were hear Mikael's very brief clean singing which never feels out of place. I haven't heard clean singing in melodic death metal sound this good since Christian Avelstam was in Scar Symmetry. And now, my favorite song on this whole album "Feel What I Believe". I am so tempted to buy this shirt for this song but dammit, I have to save my money. Everything from the riff, to the lyrics, to the drums to the vocals makes this one arguably the best ear worm on this absolutely incredible debut. "Last Kind Words" begins slow with a very soft classical music sample before diving head first into the most headbang inducing guitar chugs while a completely different riff is being played by the other guitarist. Mikael does this shouting style of clean singing with his raspy voice digitally placed over it. The final track is "The Most Alone". As a whole, this last song doesn't stand out quite as much as the others but it certainly has my favorite miniature solo which you will hear after the halfway mark. Be sure to show your support by following them on social media and purchasing their music from Nuclear Blast Records. You can listen to them pretty much anywhere whether it be: Amazon Music, Spotify or YouTube.

Episode 20 of Season 5 aired on Rebel Rock Radio on Thursday 19 May at 19h00. It was great to be back behind the mic after two hectic weeks in Clarens and then Cape Town. The show kicked off with hair metal heavyweights Slaughter and a track called 'Shake This Place'. That was the general intention from the start. From there we checked out the two Mot's, Mötley Crüe and Mott the Hoople, with 'Angela' and 'One of the Boys' respectively. We went to Australia with The Screaming Jets and James Reyne and then to Germany with Accept and a delightful love song called 'Bucket Full of Hate'. The show had a great mix and even featured a track from prog heavyweights Dream Theatre. We had metal from Satan with 'My Own God', as well as more from Cancer Bats off their latest release Psychic Jailbreak. The South African stuff came from Jasper Dan, Prime Circle, and Durban's very own Roland Suttie with his latest Theo Crous release titled 'There Was a Boy'. By request, we slipped in The Uninvited and a track called 'Fixman' making a long overdue appearance. It's a track of great relevance today with the immortal line "When the bullies go to war". There was a bit of Gary Numan and Transvision Vamp and another track from Roger Kaye with Blue Scream titled 'Weak at the Knees. We also checked out 12th Avenue and gave a big shout-out to frontman Mark Haze who I saw in Tableview last weekend. the good news is that Mark is rocking and sounding better than ever. He has without a doubt one of the best voices in the world and it's wonderful to see a guy so talented. As we said at the gig, he plays guitar as easily as breathing. We finished off with the Admas Family, Ryan, and Big brother Bryan, lol, just a little joke. Artists featured: Slaughter, Mötley Crüe, Mott the Hoople, Def Leppard, Bad Company, The Screaming Jets, James Reyne, Metallica, Satan, Accept, Dream Theatre, Fate Warning, Dark Tranquility, The Rolling Stones, Gov't Mule, Jasper Dan, Roland Suttie, Prime Circle, Gary Numan & Tubeway Army, Transvision Vamp, Halestorm, Cancer Bats, Motörhead, Avenged Sevenfold, The Gaslight Anthem, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, 12th Avenue, Blue Scream, The Uninvited, AMH, Green Day, UK Subs, Pride & Glory, Slayer, Trivium, Megadeth, Kid Rock, Ryan Adams, Bryan Adams

Warning Order might be a new project from the creative mind of Jordan Moore, but the band definitely doesn't sound anything like the new kid on the block.A solo creation by Moore – who recorded and played EVERYTHING on the recently released EP With Me…With You – Warning Order is a heavy outfit with just the right amount of influence from some of the heavyweights of the genre without being necessarily a carbon copy.By utilising his many influences but structuring them into a way unmistakably his own, Moore has created a stream of music that, for a debut effort, is nothing short of amazing.Moore joined HEAVY earlier this week to discuss the E.P and other exciting happenings with Warning Order."I've always been a fan of metal since a young age,” he began, “and some of my biggest influences are... I love the Scandinavian melodic death metal, so In Flames, Opeth, Dark Tranquility, At The Gates, bands like that. And then I love the American side of things, so Trivium, Lamb Of God, Machine Head, Metallica but then there's some big Aussie bands that are an influence like Parkway Drive, and Thy Art Is Murder have given some in influence in some of my more recent songwriting as well so it's just an all round mixture of heavy and melodic. I don't mind the odd acoustic passage here and there to give some dynamics to the music. I'm not reinventing the wheel. I'm not doing anything that hasn't already sort of been done, but it's just music that I wanna play, I wanna hear and enjoy listening to."In the full interview, Jordan talks more about the E.P, his musical style and where it comes from, doing everything himself so far and how he plans to change that if the project turns into a touring band, the singles released so far and how they represent his music, the eclectic nature of his music and how he makes it work, the next album and when it is likely to surface, future plans and more.

A chat with Matt the vocalist for the legendary technical death metal band Cryptopsy and the host of an amazing podcast called Vox & Hops which features stories about the best of metal music and craft beer. Joining us for this conversation is craft beer and metal fan extraordinaire, Jerry. In this episode, Matt shares his story of being a nu-metal child who fronted the metalcore band 3 Mile Scream and found himself in the technical ecstasy of extreme music with Cryptopsy. We then shift gears to hear about how Jerry became a fan and their friendship which developed thanks to Vox & Hops. To stay sane at the start of the pandemic, Matt created the virtual Vox & Hops Thirsty Thursday group which remains a vital link for a great crew of metal and beer lovers. Vox & Hops has also been the inspiration for this podcast as well as a new one from Vox & Hops members Evan and Phil called Whispers From The Void.As is expected on Fans With Bands, we spent some time talking about music. Jerry’s job allows him plenty of time to kick out the jams. We had a laugh as Matt shared how Jerry would send him suggestions for music to check out. This wasn’t just a sample of a few bands, but a full on deluge of awesome music to check out. Matt suggested that Jerry curate a playlist and from this The Jerry With A J special Spotify playlist was born. Jerry’s list is a goldmine of extreme music and has taken on a life of its own. We also talked about our mutual fear of SlipKnot mosh pits.Of course, given that we all love beer and Matt hosts Vox & Hops, we had to share our beers virtually. Matt was enjoying BreWskey Pub and Taproom’s “Brew Juice” and Microbrasserie 4 Origines “Steep of Faith”. Jerry tapped into Intrinsic Brewings “Flanders Red X”. Meanwhile, Chuck sipped on a delicious Stormcloud Brewing “Whiled Away” IPA.We wrapped up with what we were looking forward to in the next six months. Jerry’s looking forward to his job getting a bit less hectic and sharing music and beers with the Vox & Hops crew. Matt is celebrating the second anniversary of Vox & Hops with a special episode featuring all of the original Cryptopsy vocalists (Lord Worm, Mike DiSalvo, Martin Lacroix, Matt McGachy) hosted by Bradley Zorgdrager of Banger TV & Exclaim! The second anniversary celebration includes a special collaboration brew with Overhop Canada called “Voxs&Overhops” which will be available in the Montreal area in November. Cryptopsy will also have a special collaboration brew with Kahnawake Brewing Co. called “Crisptopsy” coming in November as well. And as if that wasn’t enough to look forward to, the 200th episode of Vox & Hops landed recently with the special guest Mikael Stane of Dark Tranquility. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. The penultimate book of the "Psycome" series, and Danny has a lot to say. From the book's intriguing beginning, the tepid, outrageously dull middle, and the full on gore of the sports festival shenanigans, Mizushiro-Sensei went all out. Danny delves into how the romance fluctuated, how the comedy improved with the insanity, and predicts how the series will end based on volume five's conclusion. Laughs, culture, information, language, and some deep criticism of the characters. Enjoy! ‘Tallica, baby!

In this episode we are joined by Johannes Eckerstrom of Avatar. Johannes talks with us about the writing process of the story behind the Feathers and Flesh concept, thoughts on doing another concept album in the future, stretching their sound and incorporating different styles, the age old question from metalheads “What’s in the water in Sweden?”, touring with different acts like Dark Tranquility, 5FDP and A7X, how much he enjoyed touring with and hanging out with Helloween, their diverse fanbase, how they fit on American radio, playing the trombone, growing up immersed in music, and more. We also talk about recent shows we caught from Max and Igor Cavalera, Ghost, Fist of Rage and Crane Technique. We play a track from Machine in the Mountain, and discuss Avatar as well. Thank you for listening, and please share!
My phone call woke up Little Dragon singer (and all-around indie goddess) Yukimi. She was napping before the show while on tour with Gorillaz. Yukimi and the band are from Gothenberg, Sweden, a town known more for its metal than its chill electronic indie pop. You'll have to listen for when I get poor groggy Yukimi to give me her best metal GROWL. No one knows who Little Dragon is YET, but everyone I have introduced to the band loves 'em. Check out “Feather.” This song Yukimi wrote because she resented being told that women are not risk-takers. Tracks played on the show... 1) Little Dragon, Machine Dreams "Feather" 2) Gorillaz (feat Little Dragon), Plastic Beach "Empire Ants" (partial) 3) Jose Gonzalez "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (cover) (background only) 4) Little Dragon, Machine Dreams "Never Never" 5) Dark Tranquility, Damage Done (2002) "The Treason Wall" (background only) 6) Brandy (feat Monica), Never Say Never "That Boy Is Mine" (background only) 7) Little Dragon, Machine Dreams "Runabout" NO songs CANCON

Say what you will about the current incarnation of In Flames, but once upon a time they were leaders in the Gothenburg scene along with At The Gates and Dark Tranquility. They might have strayed a little along the way, but their early discography holds some gems that warrant discussion. For this episode we're joined by Monica Jackomino (ten years our junior) to discuss the early years of In Flames with two generations of metalheads.
