Jeff Stanfield and Andy Shaver are joined by Scott Moss, a key player in one of the wildest lottery scandals in history. In the early 1990s, Scott worked for a firm contracted by an Australian syndicate with an audacious plan: legally purchase every possible ticket combination in the Virginia lottery. He breaks down how the plan was conceived and executed, the unexpected challenges that arose, the legal chaos that followed, and the loophole they exploited to shake the system.
In 2004, Scott and his father, Bob, started Moss. Together they created the company's first winning presentation and managed the company's first project. Today, Moss employs over 1,600 people across the US with revenue exceeding $3 billion. As CEO of Moss, Scott inspires and empowers his team to create the exceptional. His innate curiosity drives a culture of continuous learning where insight, engagement, and determination define an individual's success. Adelaide extreme metal outfit Freedom Of Fear have a special affiliation with Brisbane, having spent many a night playing in the Queensland capital in their early years. Now, the band is returning after an enforced absence to perform at the inaugural Metal; Health concert at the Back Room in Annerley on April 30.The event, organized by Scott Moss from local band Minus Life, features hand picked bands from across the nation, all coming together to raise much needed awareness and support for a mental illness that can struck anywhere, any time. What's special about Metal Health – as the name suggests – is that each band is from the heavier spectrum of music, including Snake Mountain, Eye of the Enemy, Minus Life, Lycanthrope, Where The Devil and Tetrament.Guitarist Matt Walters sat down with HEAVY a couple of days out from Metal Health to discuss the event."It's definitely an important cause seeing it affects so many people,” he began, “especially musicians and people in creative fields. I think, as far as I'm aware, musicians suffer proportionally from mental health issues so I think it works out well doing a music event for it. Personally, I think everyone knows some people that suffer so it's something that is close to everybody - some more than others. I'm really happy to be playing for that particular cause."There are many out there who feel heavy metal has much to do with the mental side of listeners health, but Walters argues that heavy metal is more of a cure rather than a symptom."More straight laced people see metal as a dark influence and say it's dark music, therefore its going to put you in a dark mood,” he shook his head, “but I think all of us heavy music fans know it's the opposite. It's not like for me I put on metal when I necessarily feel bad, but it always makes me feel good and that's why I play metal and that's why metal fans go to concerts. Plus, there's also some kind of family aspect to heavy music because it's a little bit more of an outsiders style. I mean, it's fairly popular and a lot of people that go to shows but there's still a community aspect to it."In the full interview, Matt talks about the other bands on the bill, what to expect from Freedom Of Fears show, the importance of speaking out, new music and more.
Mental Health issues are a universal problem. They don't target a specific genre, race or sex, and it is sometimes the people you think are least likely to be afflicted that are actually the most in need.It is something that can always be helped by awareness, and is also something which should never cause shame. Every one of us has had negative thoughts in their life, but, unfortunately, those thoughts manifest into things far worse for others.Recognising this from personal experience and from hearing the stories of those around him, Minus Life front man Scott Moss has decided to put on a charity heavy metal concert to raise much needed funds and awareness for mental health. The event, called Metal Health, will be held at The Back Room, Annerley on April 30, featuring Orpheus Omega, Freedom Of Fear, Eye Of The Enemy, Lycanthrope, Snake Mountain, Where The Devil, Minds End, Upon The Pyre, Tetrament and Minus Life.It is the first of what is hoped will become an annual event, with Moss joining HEAVY to chat about Metal Health in more detail."Over the years we've had many friends in the metal scene suffer - the first person for me that hit home was a good friend of mine Snails. Back in the day many years ago, when the Basement was a hub of metal for Brisbane, Snails was that one guy that was always at every show. He unfortunately committed suicide and other people in the scene over the years have committed suicide or are always talking about their mental health and I started looking into things about mental health and noticed there wasn't many avenues for us to find somebody we could connect with. I looked around for about three months and I found Stride mental health services and out of all of them they deal with kids to older people, whereas most focus on 18 to 25 year olds. The idea was to put on an event that could raise funds and bridge the gap for us. People in the scene can know they (Stride) are going to be there at the show and maybe open up the lines of communication. Also while we are there at the show we are listening to music we love and there could be something there on the night that somebody that hasn't spoken about and thinks this is the perfect opportunity. You're in an environment where everybody is there for a reason and they could open up that night and maybe save a life. That's what it's all about. Developing pathways for us to get to those helpers and services that actually understand people from our community. The main lady that runs it, her husband is a metalhead, so it seemed like a perfect fit!”In the full interview Scott talks more about Metal Health and his reasons for putting it on, the bands playing and how they have come together, the importance of awareness when it comes to mental health, the correlation between heavy metal and mental health, how you can contribute even if you can't go to the show, understand mental health and more.
The Guardians had Kyle Nelson claimed by the Diamondbacks and Scott Moss by the Phillies. We explain why these claims happened, and what the upside for those players are. We also dig into why I am a bit surprised no one claimed Daniel Johnson. Since the Guardians lost Kyle Nelson we look at the 2017 MLB Draft. The Guardians did not have a first-rounder after signing Edwin Encarnacion. In my Shadow Draft, I had them select Trevor Stephan with the top pick, so I explain why that was the right move and look at what signing Edwin cost them. We look at picks from rounds three through 10 comparing players selected and then talk a bit about the day three picks like Kyle Nelson that worked out for the Guardians. More than 600 SPACs have gone public since July 2020, when the SPAC market heated up dramatically, raising over $200 billion. New regulatory scrutiny and several high-profile SPAC litigations have revived longstanding concerns about these “blank check” companies. Broader economic pressures are also adding to the unsteady market. That said, many believe we have seen enough SPAC transactions that it has become not only a respected alternative method of taking a private company public, but it is also here to stay.In this episode of the Drawdown, we present Part II of our multi-part series on SPACs titled “The Players and the Paper,” where we explore key issues, provide valuable updates, and introduce the various parties and advisors involved in a SPAC transaction. We are joined by Cherry Bekaert's Managing Partner of Private Equity and Transaction Advisory Services, Scott Moss, and special guest Andy Tucker, M&A Partner at Nelson Mullins, to discuss the current state of the market, recent transaction activity, and the market response to recent regulatory directives, as well as what to expect for 2022.The following topics are discussed:[1:20] – SPAC Market Update[3:55] – Analysis of Active Industry Sectors[6:11] – Transaction Pricing Concerns[10:57] – Economic Pressures Affecting Transactions[13:36] – Market Response to SEC Warrant Treatment[22:10] – Market Outlook for 2022[Listen to Part I Here]

Scott Moss is a retired Navy Veteran who made the career change into software engineering after becoming a father. His journey wasn't an easy one, and as a dad, he had to learn many lessons in work-life balance. For us developers who have kids, his struggle is one that almost all of us can relate to. This industry has an extremely high ceiling, and there is a culture of grinding every day after work in order to make it big. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking "this is what is best for my family", you have to ask yourself is it worth the sacrifice of losing that time with your kids, and are you doing it for them or are you doing it for yourself? Though it doesn't have to be all or nothing in either direction. There are strategies you can put into place that will allow you to reach your goals in both your work and family life. But it's going to require self-awareness, emotional availability, and good time management. So check out this episode If you want to hear more about Scott's story and get advice on making family life work while still succeeding in your career!HomeworkSit down and record every single minute of your day for the next week.
