As early voting expands in Chicago and Cook County, voters will choose between a Democrat, Republican and Libertarian to replace Kim Foxx as the next Cook County State's Attorney. The state's attorney – the county's top prosecutor – oversees an office of about 1,300 employees and sets the tone for how justice is meted out in Cook County. WBEZ's Reset sat down with two of the candidates seeking to replace her. (Libertarian Andrew Charles Kopinski was not able to come to the station for an interview.) In this episode, we sit down with Republican Bob Fioretti is a private defense attorney and former Chicago alderman who previously ran unsuccessfully for Chicago mayor, Cook County Board president and Cook County State's Attorney. A longtime Democrat, he switched his party affiliation in 2022. To hear our conversation with his opponent Democrat Eileen O'Neill Burke, look back at our podcast feed. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.
One of the biggest races on the ballot in Chicago this election cycle is the Cook County State's Attorney race.In the spring, Eileen O'Neill Burke beat her democratic opponent by 1,571 votes - two tenth of a percent. Now, she faces Bob Fioretti, a familiar name in Chicago democratic politics, now a republican. On today's podcast, Quinn Myers previews the race after sitting down with both candidates.Host - Jon HansenReporter - Quinn Myers Want to donate to our non-profit newsroom? On today's episode I am going to give you my very initial thoughts on the Brandon Johnson victory in the Chicago mayoral runoff election as it pertains to police reform issues. The majority of the mayoral field ran primarily on the issue of crime and violence being out of control in Chicago. If you are thinking that black "progressive" alderpeople who jumped in the race wouldn't do that you would be wrong. Instead it was a chorus signing the tride but true 1980s ear rhetoric about the need for more police officers and that each individual candidate was the only person who could bring crime under control. While these tactics seemed to be affective against Mayor Lightfoot those same types of critiques against a far more progressive in rhetoric candidate Johnson didn't seem to work as well. There is little doubt in my mind that Paul Vallas tried the Bob Fioretti plan where he was going to try to be a candidate for every possible constituency in the city, and many that couldn't even vote in this election. Over the last several years he has certainly grown publicly closer to the MAGA and alt right both in Chicago and throughout Illinois. As Illinois grows more and more democratic this strategy has always seemed odd to me. Attempting a mayoral run in Chicago after doing this is puzzling for sure. Unfortunately for Vallas he continued to do this during the campaign. There is no doubt given the margin of about 17,000 votes his move right probably played a more important role then we will ever understand in his loss. As for what we should expect from Johnson I am think reformers should not expect major changes in the first budget. There just isn't enough time. When Johnson starts to make changes I am hoping he roles our a crisis response system that removes officers from responding to 911 calls that don't require them to be there. This would allow the city to staff a response with mental health professionals, medical personnel, and social workers. This among all the reforms Johnson could bring in would probably do the most to help repair the relationship between the community and the police department.

Today on our show we feature an interview with Dr. Dave Olsen who is the Co-director of the Center for Criminal Justice Research, Policy and Practice and a professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Loyola University Chicago. Today we discuss a research brief he published in July of this y ear titled "Arrests in Illinois for Illegal Possession of a Firearm, Examining the Characteristics and Trends in Arrests for Illegal Possession of a Firearm Within the Context of Crime Involving Guns." Olsen's research lays bear the propaganda that the Illinois General Assembly uses through the naming of their bills to drive the public's fear of crime and exploit it to increase sentences for non-violent crime. The research also details how despite the rhetoric around gun possession and the attempts by Mayor Lightfoot, Superintendent David Brown, and Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara to equate gun possession as a violent crime very few of those arrested with gun possession are charged with an associated violent crime. Almost 90% of those that are arrested for possession with a felony conviction in their history actually have been convicted of a non-violent offense, mostly drug related. Olsen also details that despite all the hype by politicians trying to exploit the violence in Chicago under Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx's time in office the sentences for possession have actually be longer than they have be throughout the rest of the state. This goes against all the reporting you see in the media and all the bloviating you hear from Alderpeople like Raymond Lopez (15), Nick Sposato (38), and Anthony Napolitano (41). You can also count in this group politician want to be Paul Vallas and Bob Fioretti. There is never a violent event that any of these people will not try to exploit. Video from today's show

Kim "The Fixx" Foxx, Jussie Smollett and the March 17 Democratic Primary Seasons 2 Episode 2, February 13, 2020 Ray Hanania on Politics looks closely at the abuse of power by Cook County States Attorney Kim Foxx, or "Kim The Fixx Foxx," & her decision to drop charges against Jussie Smollett, the mediocre TV actor who lied about being the victim of a racist homophobic attack in January 2019 to bolster his sagging public image. Foxx didn't "mishandle" the Smollett case. She intentionally handled it putting politics and celebrity friendship above her job to enforce the Rule of Law. Foxx faces three good candidates, Bob Fioretti, Donna More and Bill Conway. Although I like both Fioretti and More, I think the election campaign is showing that Bill Conway is leading the pack and the goal is to oust Foxx who stumbled into the office by defeating Anita Alvarez. Many argue Foxx "beat" Alvarez, but the truth is Alvarez beat herself and Foxx just lucked into the office. It's been almost four years for Foxx and she has proven to be a terrible States Attorney who puts the interest of her political pals above justice. The biggest criticism of More is she is running one of the worst election campaigns I've seen in 45 years of covering politics. More's campaign is terrible and that is surprising. She's a friend who I admire with great credentials as a former prosecutor, and I once worked with her husband who is one of the most brilliant PR and marketing professionals I have come to meet. But there is an old saying that a person can never do their own PR and in this case, I have to think that might be the problem. I mean when I went to find information on More this week, four weeks before the March 17 Democratic Primary election, I found her Twitter page which promotes a link to her campaign website, at voteformore.com. But when you go there it opens into a page offering to sell the site to the highest bidder. Try it yourself. It's a sophomoric mistake that no candidate should make or has to make given how easy it is to create websites. You almost wonder if Donna is in the race to help Kim "The Fixx" Foxx. Bob Fioretti is also a friend who I admire and have supported in the past and I would have loved to see him build up momentum against Foxx, but that doesn't seem to be happening. AT least when you click on Fioretti's campaign website link on his Twitter account, it takes you to a detailed page about his credentials and issues. www.bobforstatesattorney.com. You definitely should go there and check it out. But the issue is removing Kim "The Fixx" Foxx from office and to elect someone whose priority is the safety of the residents of Cook County from increasing crime and violence, not someone who places a higher priority on her political cronies, pals and the famous and celebrities. Kim "The Fixx" Foxx should resign, but no one willingly leaves an office they are unqualified to hold. The leading candidate is Bill Conway, a former prosecutor in the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and former Navy Intelligence Officer who fought the Taliban. He is mounting a formidable challenge to Kim "The Fixx" Foxx. His website is newdayconway.com. Any of the leading challengeers against Kim "The Fixx" Foxx would be great replacements, Fioretti, More and especially Conway.
