I also happened to visit the Academy Museum here in Los Angeles where there was an entire room dedicated to Spike Lee. Inside that room I froze because right on the wall in front of me was the poster and an award for his documentary "4 Little Girls." It immediately took me back to my research for this episode on the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. And as promised, another episode to make up for last week. I think it's good to be aware that not every member of the LGBTQ+ community can be labeled a hero. There are in fact some villains...like many of the guys I dated in the past. Some of them were pretty villainous. One man though did something completely unthinkable and vile. The AIDS crisis may be overlooked in history classes but the disease ran rampant throughout our community. Today there have been wonderful advances in the medical world to help keep HIV/AIDS under control. Still, Daryll Rowe decided to weaponize his status to seek revenge on men he dated. College was a really fun part of my life but campuses can be dangerous places. I received many an e-mail from campus police about a sexual assault or attempted sexual assault on campus and the steps we can do to protect ourselves (one of the many reasons Roe V. Wade should not be overturned btw). Whenever we received those e-mails, the student body would be on edge for a while, hoping we weren't next. In the 90s though, it wasn't just the students at Missouri's Lindenwood University who would run into trouble. Though it's unpleasant to feel uncomfortable, sometimes you have to learn these things so history does not repeat itself. I don't think it's necessary to tell all of you that the world is INSANE right now with Putin going to war with Ukraine. What a child! The Original Deadtime Stories stands with Ukraine. I've seen a lot of posts on social media about what you can do to help and one of the things that keeps recurring in these posts is using the correct pronunciation of the capital, Kyiv. When we first recorded this episode, Taylor Shurte (who plays Iana Kasian in this chapter) taught me that some members of her family were from Ukraine and pronounced the capital city as Keeve instead of Key-yev. Ever since then if I talked about the Ukrainian capital, I tried to pronounce it the Ukrainian way instead of what the world taught us, the Russian way. So I hope this episode, in some little way, helps us stand with the Ukraine through our pronunciation of the capital city, Kyiv.Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau and executive produced by Daniel Jones. I was so awkward on camera and grabbed the mic then released the mic then grabbed it again, totally unsure what he wanted me to do. Thank goodness they did NOT include my interview in the final edit.
