The President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, focussed on the unfolding energy crisis in Europe. She said the EU was committed to protecting citizens and business from soaring costs, and called for cuts to electricity use and windfall taxes on energy firms. We hear from Riina Sikkut, Estonia's Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure. The Detroit Motor Show starts this week, and its star guest is US President Joe Biden. We speak to Paul Eisenstein of the Detroit Bureau website who explains the importance of the event. And could the card payments market soon be welcoming new players to operate alongside Visa and Mastercard? More than 1,600 merchants in the US have asked for legislation to be passed that could see other operators enter the industry - and potentially reduce processing fees. And New York's Museum of Modern Art - or MOMA - has announced it's heading into the world of NFTs. Brendan Dawes, NFT & Digital Artist, tells us how this might change what is considered - and valued as - art. Will Bain is joined throughout the programme by Takara Small, freelance technology reporter in Canada, and by Zyma Islam, reporter at the Daily Star in Dhaka in Bangladesh. Today's guest is Brendan Dawes - an award-winning artist whose career has focused on using generative processes involving data, machine learning and algorithms, to create interactive installations, electronic objects, online experiences, data visualisations, motion graphics and screen and print work. His work has been celebrated all over the world including three Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) exhibitions in NY and his Cinema Redux project - which we discuss in this interview – actually became part of the permanent MoMA collection in 2008.Brendan now focuses his time on NFTs with his first being sold within one hour of its launch on the KnownOrigin platform, and was acquired by the legendary NFT collector WhaleShark. Brendan went on to release a collection on Nifty Gateway which sold out in less than a minute! In today's episode, we discuss NFTs and the impact they have had on the design world, how the tough times in Brendan's career led to his success, and how being included in Sotheby's first NFT auction was such a pivotal moment for him, and the industry.I am a huge fan of Brendan and his work and urge you to find him on Twitter and follow him. And if you want to check out his work, he has another drop scheduled on Nifty Gateway for 23rd February so do check it out – it's called 16Bit Machine Dreams and it's the third and final part of his machine dreams series, inspired by video games.Enjoy!Mentioned in Episode:The Art of Cyber SecurityBrendan Twitter / Instagram / WebsiteDanielle Twitter / Instagram / NewsletterEpisode edited by Jolin Cheng

Holiday fun has exhausted Marsha while Kelly has been busy making a butt-shaped divot on her couch. Plus we have a patron giveaway and a surprise Winter Weave Along prize today! Full show notes with photos and links can be found in the podcast section of our shop website: TwoEwesFiberAdventures.com. Marsha’s Projects I haven’t knit a stitch on the Holey Comfort cardigan by Hinterm Stein,  but I did wind the fourth skein. I plan to bring it on a New Year’s trip and make some good progress. But I am the boss of my knitting, so I might choose to work on something else instead! I turned the heel and started the gusset of a  pair of socks for myself using Drops Fabel Print that I bought at the San Luis Obispo yarn crawl back in 2014.  I also finished a holiday tea cosy in red and green using the pattern Nanny Meiers Tea Cozy by Amelia Carlson published by Fiber Trends. I used spirit yarn from Sears!  Finally, I’m swatching with Little Fish Stitches fingering for a Tee called Walk Along by AnkeStrick. Kelly’s Projects  I’ve been working a lot on the Persian Tile Blanket for my grand niece. I’m following the color choices (sort of) of a project by JenasaurusWake that I saw while watching FO radar. I’m using Knit Picks Brava Worsted in lots of fun bright colors and making color choices to make all the octagons look like they have different sized flowers in them.  With Friends Pullover. I’m using two patterns:  Rachel by Josée Paquin, and Fresh by Josée Paquin. I’ve put the hem on waste yarn and picked up for the first sleeve. I’m going to start with the dark green at the top of the sleeve and then move into the stripe colors. I’ll do the sleeves similarly to the Fresh pattern where the sleeves are mostly one color and then there is a little bit of striping.  I finished 14 dishcloths in the Triple L Tweed stitch from the Purl Soho Slip Stitch Dishtowels pattern. I cast on a multiple of 3 stitches +1. It’s usually 34 or 37 stitches because I like a compact dishcloth. I totally used up four different 108-yard skeins of Tahki Cotton Classic  Ongoing Giveaway--Paper, Planning, and Plotting Enter on Ravelry, through the website comments page, or through email (twoewes@twoewesfiberadventures.com) by Jan 20th. Brendan is and has been an inspirational figure for many for a long time. His work is at the intersection of people, technology and objects and what interested me the most, was the mix of analogue and digital, and that’s what we cover in this episode. What have we lost through digitisation? How can we retain that magic? We also cover Brendan’s own internal dialogue around how he describes his work and what he does and also how lots of his work is generated through the belief of sharing everything, and how this led him to work with Airbnb and ultimately the Sundance Festival in the US. http://brendandawes.com/projects/plasticplayer2 http://brendandawes.com/projects/pwc http://brendandawes.com/projects/airbnb http://brendandawes.com/projects/amongsttheleaves Brendan on TwitterBrendan's store (sale now on!) https://producedforuse.com This is HCD is brought to you by Humana Design Follow This is HCD us on Twitter Follow This is HCD on Instagram Sign up for our newsletter Join the This is HCD Slack Channel Follow us on Medium Support the show.

This week we talk to Manchester-based artist and designer Brendan Dawes. Rooted in universal themes, Brendan’s work often takes the form of interactive installations, exploring both digital and analogue worlds – with projects including mini sms printing machines, to a bot that generates tangible creatures from live tweets. We hear how he left school at 16, going on to work as a photographer at a news agency and at a factory, before eventually joining a Burnley-based web design company in 1996, where he became art director within a year. There, he became art director within a year, but went on to co-found his own digital design studio, Magnetic North, in 2000. Over the next 10 years, he helped grow his team from three people to over twenty, creating digital work for BBC, Diesel, Coca-Cola, Kellogg's, Astra Zeneca, Channel 4, The Tate and Sony Brendan went his own way as an artist and designer five years ago, and has since collaborated with clients such as Airbnb, Google and Twitter, and even has artwork featured in the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. He discusses his biggest learnings, and why pushing yourself to share your work with the world – constantly – reaps the greatest rewards. Lecture in Progress is made possible by the support of a number of brand patrons – they include GF Smith, Squarespace and The Paul Smith Foundation. This episode was recorded on October 6th at Something Good design festival in Bristol. It was presented by Indi Davies and the producer was Ivor Manly. Check out lectureinprogress.com for more details.

(Thousands of people are thinking now, “when is there ever?”) That‘s because this is a spoiler filled ‘Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’ cinema special episode with my guests and film buff friends Brendan Dawes and Jeremy Keith. It’s a wild show. We ask whether there should be a new Oscar category for performance capture and if Andy Serkis should win everything? We talk about the other seven Planet Of The Apes films, starting with the original five and if Tim Burton’s 2001 reimagining is a guilty pleasure. Then we get in deep with the new ‘Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’ before asking ourselves the important questions; When will apes wear clothes? When and how will humans become mute, and why should you avoid watching an apes film in Rhyl? Even if you’re not an Apes aficionado, I think you’ll enjoy listening to this episode of Unfinished Business as much as we enjoyed making it, which was a lot.
