Let's welcome our newest Pencil Buster, Brian Brandt! Brian is President of the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association (WHCA), head coach of Wausau West's hockey program, and a tech ed high school teacher. My goodness, that's one educated educator, and he knows how to talk education! Because coaching sports is about so much more than training athletes for their particular activity. It's about educating them for life, putting athletes in challenging situations that help them grow as people. With his WHCA Pres hat on, Brian shares highlights from the most recent state hockey tournaments. With his tech ed teacher hat on, Brian and Tim discuss the educational benefits of those "non-core" curriculars like wood shop and metal arts. All these aspects mesh together for a well-rounded education! BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. Always Be Learning “Success leaves clues.” The first time I heard that statement was from Dr. Johnathan Kraus in Episode 27.   Then David Jasse made the same point in Episode 59.    I thought I'd better sit up and pay attention.   Learning Is Vital, But We Can't Stay There We can't get stuck in learning mode alone. We also need to take ACTION. This is a big part of the Fast Track to Grant Writer VIP Program. Sure, we have plenty of supportive community and accountability, but the lessons are strategically designed for those who are ready to take serious action.   After going through the first few modules, the Fast Track to Grant Writer students are taking action - having conversations with prospective clients, setting up meetings, and figuring out their services. They already have a solid understanding of what types of services they can offer nonprofits - plus a group to support them and share ideas.   They've learned the importance of both learning AND action. 2021 Nonprofit Book Roundup  I enjoy learning from others too; that's why I always ask my guests to share a resource that's been especially helpful to them.     Here we go - the latest book roundup for 2021:   Asking: A 59-Minute Guide to Everything Board Members, Volunteers, and Staff Must Know to Secure the Gift - Jerold Panas  Dr. Jonathan Kraus (Ep 27) When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor . . . and Yourself - Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert  Rodney Olsen (Ep 48) The Ambassador's Journey: A Parable about Nonprofit Board Leadership - by Brian Brandt and Ashley Kutach  Brian Brandt (Ep 57) The Go-Giver - by John David Mann & Bob Burg  Alesha Mathis (Ep 67) I HAVE MY 501(C)3!

Brian Brandt joins host Craig Price to discuss strategic planning. This is another  Association of Legal Administrators Region 4 conference breakout speakers spotlight! Not only join Brian and Craig in  Albuquerque NM on Oct. 4th but the two are also at the Region 6 conference in Reno, NV on November 1st! Go to http://www.alanet.org/events/regionals.aspx  to learn more.  While planning of any type can be a bit daunting, being strategic about it can be even more confounding. Craig struggles to figure out how to balance his need to be present and in the moment with the long term vision required for strategic planning, Thankfully, Brian sets Craig straight as they discuss having those usually avoided but highly necessary difficult conversations about planning BEFORE you think about implementing them, asking yourself if a new plan is necessary and how metrics are such an important part of figuring out what's working. As Brian explains, sometimes after a planning sessions understanding that no action is needed can often be better than any action you can take. And Craig can totally relate to inaction!
