Continuing our series on defining farmers markets we like to wonder: what if everyone in a region or in the country agreed on one set of best practices and one set of rules for farmers markets? In this episode we're talking with Dr. Kim Hutchison and Meredith Ledlie Johnson about how the Virginia Farmers Market Association has done just that. Bringing in multiple stakeholders helped create consistent standards. Education and certification of managers and farmers markets provides validation and a sense of pride. Leveraging that recognition to negotiate managers' compensation and public policy are additional benefits.    Listen in as we talk about: Creating consistent standards Recognizing our industry's strengths Bringing multiple agencies to the table Documenting the work we do How certification affects salaries    Today's episode of Tent Talk, the Farmers Market Podcast, is supported by American Farmland Trust

Latest Beef Industry News European Union Makes Decision On Cultivated Meat Ban The European Commission criticized Hungary's proposed ban on cultured meat, calling it “unjustified” and potentially disruptive to the EU single market. “No lab-grown meat products are currently authorized in the EU, making a ban premature,” stated the Commission, adding that it could interfere with the EU's scientific approval process for novel foods. Following a TRIS assessment, Sweden, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Czechia also opposed the ban, citing risks to market unity if cultured meat is later approved. The Netherlands further argued that cultured meat could benefit farmers, offering a future-proof alternative for the agricultural sector. Hungary can now revise its draft ban in response to these comments. Vilsack Calls For Congress To Act On Farm Bill Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is urging Congress to pass the overdue Farm Bill. “We need a Farm Bill now,” he emphasized in a call with American Farmland Trust, noting limited time left this fall for a bipartisan solution or at least an extension of the current bill. Though hopeful for a five-year bill by year-end, Vilsack warns delays could disrupt 2025 farm financing. The 2018 Farm Bill, temporarily extended, expired on Sept. 30, putting pressure on Congress to act before the November elections. NCBA Criticizes Dietary Guidelines Recommendations The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) criticized the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee's recent push to replace high-quality proteins like beef with plant-based options. NCBA's Ethan Lane called the suggestions "out-of-touch" and “dangerous,” pointing out that beans and lentils can't fully replace the nutrients beef provides. Dr. Shalene McNeill, NCBA's Executive Director of Nutrition Science, emphasized that while beef makes up only 5% of calories in the American diet, it supplies over 5% of essential nutrients like iron, B12, and protein. These recommendations, part of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines process, will be reviewed by USDA and HHS. Arkansas Beef Council Names Best Burger The Arkansas Beef Council announced Bailey's Family Restaurant in Cave City as the winner of the inaugural Arkansas's Best Burger Contest with their Caveman Burger. The Caveman Burger stands out with a massive two-pound beef patty on a nine-inch bun, available as a double with optional cheese or bacon. Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward noted that the contest highlighted Arkansans' love for quality beef and local restaurants. We discuss AFT's "Smart Solar" program, which aims to balance the acceleration of clean energy with the preservation of thriving farms. We explore the challenges and opportunities of dual-use solar projects, examining how agrivoltaics can provide additional revenue for farmers (and farming communities) while keeping land in production. The conversation touches on farmer attitudes towards solar, highlighting generational differences and the importance of building trust and knowledge in rural communities. Winter and Kinzer provide insights into state-level policies and research on agrivoltaics, as well as the current status and future outlook for these projects in the US. They reveal that currently about 10% of US solar projects involve some form of agrivoltaics, primarily sheep grazing, and discuss the growing interest from energy buyers in the social and environmental attributes of these projects. Throughout the episode, the guests emphasize the need for careful planning and community engagement to ensure the successful integration of solar power and agriculture, presenting agrivoltaics as a potential solution to balance clean energy goals with farmland preservation.Social Media HandlesThe American Farmland TrustEthan WinterAustin Kinzer Support the Show.Connect with Tim Clean Power Hour Clean Power Hour on YouTubeTim on TwitterTim on LinkedIn Email tim@cleanpowerhour.com Review Clean Power Hour on Apple PodcastsThe Clean Power Hour is produced by the Clean Power Consulting Group and created by Tim Montague. The economics of farming are always tenuous and subject to many market and climatic forces. Robert "Bob" Waring of Brandon Farms of Dunnsville, Virginia describes himself as a return-on-investment (ROI) kind of guy. With the tenuous, volatile nature of farming, Bob is constantly evaluating Brandon Farms' cropping system as a whole and looking for sound input reduction strategies. Over the past fifteen years, Bob has focused on growing his fertilizer (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) and farm profitability through timely cover crop mixtures and management. Hairy vetch and black oats have worked well in his corn and soybean rotations and helped Brandon Farms dramatically reduce fertilizer and pesticide costs. If you are new to cover cropping, Bob recommends finding a legume like clover, cowpeas, or Austrian winter pea that fits in your system as a starting point.American Farmland Trust's Soil Health Case Study of Brandon Farms is accessible at https://farmlandinfo.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2024/05/brandon-farms-soil-health-case-study.pdf If you have questions about the economic and climate resilience of your cropping and farming systems, please visit your local Virginia Cooperative Extension unit, a USDA Service Center, or a Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District office near you. To learn about the Virginia Soil Health Coalition and join the Coalition's quarterly meetings, please visit https://www.virginiasoilhealth.org/. When asked to define the 3 P's of Sustainability (People, Planet, Prosperity), Prosperity is often the one gives people pause. But it's such an important leg of the stool! Sustainable businesses develop long-term plans and strategies to ensure they can thrive now and into the future. Welcome to Marketing Tip Monday with SIP Certified. We know customers are looking for wines labeled as sustainable. While our longer-form episodes help you learn about the latest science and research for the wine industry, these twice-monthly micro podcasts will help you share your dedication to sustainable winegrowing so you can show your customers that you share their values. Some of the ways businesses embody Prosperity are through: Creating and sticking to a budget. Keeping thorough records. Creating informed and effective marketing plans. A business can also extend their prosperity through collaborative efforts with like-minded groups. When this happens, both parties win. Organizations that partner over shared values benefit by: Pooling resources. Building relationships. Advancing awareness and support for their cause. For example, Cambria Estate Winery is a Business rooted in women's leadership. Their team partners with organizations that share their dedication to uplifting and empowering women in an incredibly impactful way. Cultivating Female Empowerment Cambria Estate Winery is rooted women's leadership. Their certified sustainable wines are even named after their proprietors – Barbara, Katherine, and Julia. Did you know that their dedication to recognizing the experiences and achievements of women goes even deeper? Uplifting and empowering women is core to their Business values, and they have a big way of showing it. Every March for Women's History Month, Cambria selects an organization that aligns with their pillars of climate action and women's leadership, and pledges $25k to support their efforts. Tamara Bingham, Cambria's Brand Manager, gets to make the phone call to let the organization know they were selected – a task she says is “probably the most rewarding part of my job.” In 2024, she notified the lead of American Farmland Trust's “Women for the Land” initiative to pledge their support. Right in line with Cambria's own sustainable practices, this initiative supports women farmers and landowners in preserving their land and embracing conservatism. Other past years' partnership organizations include Equity Now, Women's Earth Alliance, SeaTrees, and Amazon Frontlines. Through these partnerships, Cambria demonstrates their dedication to using the power of their platform to help uplift and empower women everywhere. Their Business practices are founded on their belief that a commitment to sustainability is also a commitment to amplifying the messages of the many deserving organizations working towards a better future. We are here to help you tell your customers how your brand protects natural and human resources with the Sustainable Story program. This simple yet powerful free tool helps you tell your own personal sustainable message. Today, we are setting the table with a discussion about land. Agricultural land, and the problem of the fast disappearance of this land across our country. Our guest is Brooks Lamb, Author of Love for the Land, Lessons from Farmers Who Persist in Place. Published through Yale University Press. This book is deeply related to Tennessee, Southern, and American agriculture. At its core, Love for the Land shares the power and potential of people-place relationships. To do so, the book explores why some small and midsize farmers continue to care for their land, even in the face of tremendous adversity. In terms of adversity, he pays particular attention to farmland loss from sprawl and haphazard development, agricultural consolidation, and, for farmers of color, injustices in the past and present.  Despite these challenges, some small and midsized farmers persevere. In dozens of interviews with farmers in two Tennessee counties, which serve as microcosms of agrarian communities across the country, Brooks found that love for the land and devotion to place -- virtues that align with Wendell Berry's writings on imagination, affection, and fidelity -- fuel their persistence and stewardship. Brooks writes that we need to better support these farmers -- and that we all have something to learn from them, no matter where we live. If you are moved by this podcast to help with this crucial problem of farmland loss - and are thinking about year-end-giving - there is an organization that Brooks is closely aligned and works with that is actively addressing farmland loss and conversion in the Volunteer State, this organization is called American Farmland Trust. We have also placed a link directly to that organization on our website too. It is Farmland.org

Agriculture is a crucial contributor to California's economy, generating over $132 billion annually through the production of more than 400 commodities, some of which are only commercially produced here. It plays a major role in ensuring food security, promoting economic well-being, and maintaining environmental quality. However, the number of farms and ranches is dwindling. Weather extremes, natural disasters, stringent regulations, and unjust criticism make it tough for farmers and ranchers to stay in business. When we lose our agricultural stewards, we lose our working lands too. 2,000 acres are lost to development and conversion every day, according to a study by the American Farmland Trust. On top of that, concerns are surfacing over foreign-ownership of agricultural land posing as a threat to national security. All of this raises the question: Why are ranchers and farmers selling their land in the first place? In this episode, Michael Delbar, Rangeland Trust CEO and host sits down with Senator Melissa Hurtado, Chair of the California Senate Agriculture Committee, to address and provide insight into these issues that are threatening California agriculture. Together, they discuss ways to address these growing problems, as well as other potential solutions.
