Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 22, 2022 is: henchman HENCH-mun noun A henchman is a trusted follower who may perform unpleasant, wrong, or illegal tasks for a powerful person (such as a politician or criminal). // The play opens with the main character, a gangster, onstage surrounded by his henchmen. See the entry > Examples: "However resourceful Batman is, Riddler actually drives the story…. As clues pile up, more and more of Gotham's power players get drawn into that web, with the Penguin (an unrecognizable Colin Farrell), the top henchman to mob boss Falcone (John Turturro), adding to the Rogues Gallery of villains." — Brian Lowry, CNN, 28 Feb, 2022 Did you know? The earliest known examples of henchman show it being used as a term for a squire or a page, but the word may have seen earlier use with the meaning "groom." It first appeared in Middle English and is a combination of Old English hengest ("a male horse") and man. One of the duties of a groom, squire, or page to a person of high rank was tending horses, and such a person was relied upon, which influenced the broader senses of henchman including "right-hand man."
Previously on I Want To Rewatch: An X-Files Podcast... Mulder orders an alien autopsy tape from a magazine (as one would do in the '90s), and after viewing it thinks he's found real footage of an alien autopsy. But as he and Scully try to learn more about the tape's origins, they find themselves uncovering a conspiracy... of alien abduction and recovered UFOs... or is it something even more sinister? Emphasizing that “it *might* be aliens…” feels really apt here. Originally recorded on 16 October 2021. Originally released on 05 November 2021. For years, award shows have grappled with a problem that likely dwarfs all others when it comes to sagging ratings: An abundance of nominees that most people haven't heard of, much less seen, sapping the incentive to tune in.If the Golden Globe nominations announced Wednesday are any indication, the 2021 awards season -- coming amid the coronavirus pandemic that has deflated movie-going -- will put that problem on steroids, while significantly shifting the balance of power toward streaming. The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., which presents the awards, as usual reached far and wide for nominees -- with a customary emphasis on big stars and international talent -- many of them quite worthy, others not so much. The main takeaway scanning the list, however, was the weirdness of it in terms of movies especially that either haven't premiered yet or seemingly came and went with scant notice. If you're not familiar with some of the nominees, in other words, don't worry, you're not alone. In a year without box-office hits, entities like Netflix and Amazon moved to fill the movie void. And in a TV landscape that has already seen widespread fragmentation among traditional channels, new streaming services have splintered the audience's attention even further -- exactly how much no one really knows, since Netflix and its competitors don't regularly provide reliable data regarding how many people watch them.Because Netflix is widely available and enjoys vast distribution, it creates a showcase for prestige fare, and the pandemic has likely eroded resistance that the service faced on the movie front. Notably, its 22 nominations in film categories actually exceeded the 20 the service amassed in television, leading the way in both.Netflix landed three of the nominations for best drama and musical or comedy, as Disney+, Amazon and Hulu brought the streaming total to six out of 10. In television, streamers accounted for 34 of 55 Globe bids, with only one nomination for a traditional broadcast network, for Jane Levy in "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist" on the Globes' host network, NBC.The nominations themselves don't address the lingering challenge and logistics of how awards will be presented. The Emmys pulled off an impressive virtual ceremony in September, but saw viewership dip to record lows, in what could well be a harbinger for the awards season to come, with Oscar ratings having already been a downward spiral.Optimists will scan the Globe categories and find plenty of meritorious work, a wide cross-section of diverse talent, and the knowledge that the awards process will help bring attention to deserving projects. That translates not only into prestige for the honorees but, practically speaking, into more viewing of their work if people are inspired to go out and find it.Additional nominations will come with this week's Screen Actors Guild Awards, in a year that has seen the jumbled award calendar expanded into 2021, and the Oscars -- traditionally the cherry on top -- pushed back until April.Events like the Globes still provide reason for those recognized to celebrate, and ammunition for that friend of yours who has been urging you to watch "Ted Lasso" or "The Flight Attendant," even if that means anteing up for a subscription to Apple TV+ or HBO Max.Mostly, though, the nominations underscore that whatever the new normal will look like for the entertainment industry after the pandemic, "normal" won't be a term that applies to this year's awards season.text by Brian Lowry, CNN

Funnily enough, this episode is not about the album by The Police, nor about Cartesian mind-body dualism… weird. Instead, when a man is killed in a smart building under mysterious circumstances, a former partner of Mulder’s comes to him for help. The most obvious suspect is the company’s disgruntled computer genius founder, who might have used the company’s smart operating system to commit murder. Mulder and Scully need to figure out if this scruffy programmer is an evil genius or if his AI has a life of its own. We know it’s totally reverse-engineered alien technology, right? Five years after the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag triggered controversy, the group behind the awards has made inclusion a requirement to be considered to win them.In what represents the most direct link between the movie industry's top prize and efforts to promote diversity and address systemic issues, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday that movies must meet certain criteria in terms of representation in order to be eligible for the Academy Award for best picture beginning in 2024.Introduced under an initiative called Aperture 2025, the organization said the goal was to "encourage equitable representation on and off screen in order to better reflect the diversity of the movie-going audience."Films must meet at least two of four benchmarks. They include featuring actors from underrepresented groups in significant roles or accounting for at least 30% of the cast; similar criteria in terms of those working on the film behind the scenes; a significant commitment to paid apprenticeships, internships and career development; and significant representation among the teams devoted to marketing, publicity and distribution.During the Oscar campaigns in 2022 and 2023, movies will have to submit a confidential "inclusion standards" form, but that won't prevent eligibility until the 96th Academy Awards. Next year's awards, encompassing movies released in 2020, have already been delayed by two months due to the disruptions to film distribution caused by the coronavirus. The change was made in consultation with the Producers Guild of America, and adapted from standards developed by the British Film Institute that must be met to earn funding for certain projects in the U.K.The latest announcement follows a concerted push by the Academy to expand its membership ranks, admitting more women and people of color. In June, an additional 819 new members were invited into the group, 45% of them women and 36% people of color. Representation among the latter has more than doubled since the membership initiative began in 2016.The Oscars made history earlier this year when "Parasite" was anointed best picture, becoming the first non-English-language film and first South Korean film to receive that prize.text by Brian Lowry, CNN

Contents [] Plot A dinosaur materialises in Victorian London and spits out the onto the banks of the river Thames, from which emerges the freshly regenerated —suffering from post-regenerative trauma—and . They are greeted by the , comprised of Madame Vastra, her human maid and wife Jenny, and butler Strax. The Gang instruct the police on how to calm and contain the dinosaur and take the Doctor and Clara to their residence, where the Doctor rests and Vastra confronts Clara about her prejudiced attitude to the Doctor's changed face. Clara admits that she is struggling to adapt to the new Doctor, due to his stark difference to the , particularly his apparent age. The Doctor awakens to hear the dinosaur's pleas for help before it spontaneously combusts. The Doctor joins Clara and the Paternoster Gang at the river and learns from Vastra that this is not the first incident of spontaneous combustion recently. The Doctor spots an unfazed man across the river and jumps in to investigate. Clara returns home with the others to start their own investigations, hoping they will cross the Doctor's path. The Doctor roams back streets for answers the next morning, questioning how his body chooses a new face during regeneration. Both Clara and the Doctor find a message reading "" in a newspaper, directing them to a restaurant where they reunite but learn that neither planted the message for the other, as they had both assumed. They realise that the room is filled with robots to prevent them leaving. They are descended into a lair where they see the man from the river surrounded by other idle, human-like robots. The Doctor surmises the man is a long-lived cyborg, but in the unusual sense that it is a robot trying to make himself human by replacing his parts with biological ones taken from the victims of spontaneous combustion, including the dinosaur. The Doctor leaves Clara as the robots and the cyborg begin to awaken after escaping himself. Recalling his earlier advice, Clara holds her breath to hide herself from the robots, but she is soon captured and taken to the cyborg. He states that he is trying to reach the "promised land" by prolonging his life via parts replacements and questions her on the Doctor's whereabouts. The Doctor returns with the Paternoster Gang to fight the robots with Clara whilst the Doctor chases the cyborg back to the restaurant. The cyborg releases a hot-air balloon made of human skin, lifting the restaurant into the sky with him and the Doctor inside. The Doctor interrogates the cyborg, who reveals that he and parts of the restaurant are from the SS Marie Antoinette, the sister ship to the SS Madame de Pompadour (""). The Doctor warns the cyborg that he will either have to kill himself, or he will kill him to protect the humans. Moments later, the cyborg falls from the balloon and is impaled on the spire of . Clara and the Paternoster Gang see the other robots go lifeless after his death. After regrouping, Clara finds that the Doctor and the TARDIS have vanished. Vastra assures her that the Doctor will return, pointing out that Clara as the person that knows the Doctor the best is already prepared to leave. The Doctor reappears, planning to take Clara home, but instead arrives in Glasgow, where a phone call from the to Clara moments before the regeneration from his perspective encourages her to stay.
