Joanna Coles unpacks the maddening paradox of Donald Trump: a man who rages against the media while being entirely made by it. Joining her is former CNN senior media reporter Oliver Darcy who lays bare the uncomfortable truths — how Trump lost control of the narrative he once mastered, why media giants like Disney are bending the knee, and the chilling tactics being used behind the scenes to reshape the fourth estate. It's a gripping look at power, ego, and the fragile state of American media. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Reporters like Oliver Darcy and David Folkenflik serve as sounding boards for the radical-left staffers inside liberal media outlets who are furious whenever owners or executives threaten to move any outlet toward the center, or make any move that seems to please President Trump. Vicious bias is equated with freedom of speech.
For months, Kara has been assembling a group of investors to buy The Washington Post. Although it's not actually for sale, the ongoing exodus of journalistic talent, combined with Bezos's decision to kill an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris days before the 2024 presidential election, made it both plausible that Bezos might entertain a bid and crucial that someone step forward. Now, after watching Bezos remake the opinion section in ways that seem designed to curry favor with President Trump, the chances of persuading him to sell seem increasingly remote. Nonetheless, Kara's quixotic quest continues, and in this episode, she talks to some of the people she's turned to for advice, including: Cameron Barr, a former senior managing editor at the Post who resigned in the wake of the new changes; Tina Brown, a pioneering journalist and media executive who has led multiple publications, including Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Newsweek, and The Daily Beast; Oliver Darcy, a former CNN senior media reporter and currently the founder and lead author of Status.news; Sally Quinn, the first woman to anchor a CBS News morning show, and a best-selling author, and longtime Post columnist who was married to the late Ben Bradlee, a legendary executive editor at the Post; and Amanda Katz, a writer, editor and translator who worked as a senior assignment editor for the opinion section of the Post until she resigned last year (and wife to Kara Swisher). And make sure to watch "Becoming Katharine Graham," a new documentary about the former Post publisher's extraordinary life and journalistic courage (now streaming, ironically enough, on Amazon Prime). The Trump administration is issuing a steady stream of controversial executive orders that are testing Congress, the courts, and the Constitution. This "flooding the zone with shit" strategy is making it difficult for the media to keep up and provide in-depth coverage. Today Bill speaks with leading Media Reporter, Oliver Darcy. Darcy, formerly with CNN, now writes the excellent daily newsletter, Status. Bill and Oliver discuss how the media is struggling to adequately cover and contextualize the Trump administration's actions, which range from pardoning Capitol rioters to making extreme claims about seizing control of Gaza. There are concerns that some media outlets are caving to pressure from the administration or the administration's allies.Examples of the media's challenges include the Politico subscription scandal, the 60 Minutes lawsuit, and the Pentagon removing longstanding media outlets from their press corps. Darcy calls for the media to adopt a different approach, such as framing coverage as a "national crisis" and devoting more resources and airtime to these issues. Their discussion exposes the Trump administration's efforts to overwhelm and undermine the media, and spotlights the media's struggle to effectively cover and contextualize the administration's actions. Bill is a subscriber to Oliver's newsletter and suggest you do as well. SEASON 3 EPISODE 84: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:50) SPECIAL COMMENT: Happy Insurrection Day, when Republicans will certify the election of a “president” who is constitutionally ineligible to hold the office according to the 3rd clause of the 14th Amendment and the Electoral Count Reform Act of 2022 and who himself fomented the assault four years ago that ended our conceit about the peaceful transfer of power. The illegitimate president’s Republican whores and servants may in fact trudge to the capitol through a blizzard to make this prostitution of democracy official The Democrats? They won’t say anything because this didn’t TEST well as a campaign ad and their flaccid willingness to risk anything in our defense is further deflated by their perception that this is a fait accompli and since it is a fait accompli ESPECIALLY because of their own cowardice they now have to do their best to compromise, and obey in advance, a group of bandits and pirates posing as a presidential administration, whose only desire TO compromise is to compromise Democrats and the Free Press and Reality and democracy itself. These are some of those Republicans: Freshman Congressman Riley Moore – “My constituents have sent me here to this town not to work with Democrats but to destroy their agenda." “We asked everyone not to leak. Please for god’s sake do not give inside information to the enemy” that's from the LEAD Republican in the House, the CREEPIEST Republican in the House since Denny Hastert, Mike Johnson and I don’t know if by “the enemy” he means the Democrats or the media or both or the temptations of his anti-porn app, and I no longer care. This is Insurrection Day and we all KNOW what the Republicans would be doing today in the mirror version of this grim reality; if they were in charge and Trump were in office and had presidential immunity and a new president was about to sign off on putting him in jail and it would be what they actually did four years ago today only they wouldn’t bother to try to be subtle or legal about it (they’d be gassing up the tanks). AND NO, JUDGE JUAN MERCHAN IS NO HERO. He too is obeying in advance. Along with the Washington Post, squeezing out cartoonist Ann Telnaes. And Brian Stelter, covering up for Fox News. And the media soft-pedaling the Vegas bomber's hopes to see all Democrats murdered, and Congressman Tom Suozzi, and soon-to-disappear Senator Kyrsten Sinema. B-Block (29:30) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Those memorializing Aaron Brown without including the incident about his refusal to cover The Challenger explosion; Congresswoman Nancy Mace and "Gunther Eagleman" who only read the headline; and the meticulous Oliver Darcy who only gets mentioned here because he asked a question that really traumatized me: What will Olivia Nuzzi do in 2025? (42:14) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Remember dear Flaco? The majestic owl liberated from the Central Park Zoo? There is an extraordinary new book about him. And from an old book: remember the Ash Heaps in "The Great Gatsby"? They were real and you'll never believe what was built were they used to sit. C-Block (52:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Young Tippy needs the same surgery my new pup Kitt just got, and we need your help to pay for it. SEASON 3 EPISODE 81: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: To paraphrase Van Jones and other panderers: This was the weekend Elon Musk truly became president. It was also the weekend the other guy became Donald J. Trumpuppet. The number of Republicans who defied Trump over the Continuing Resolution ranges, depending on your point of view, from 29 to ALL of them. Because they also voted by unanimous consent to bury Musk's fabricated controversy over the no-cost land transfer to the District of Columbia. Trump, for his part, is in a bigger hole now than he ever was during his presidency as the self-inflicted losses pile up: The Gaetz Lack-of-Ethics Report may come out today. Other nominations are in trouble. One new one may be Alan Dershowitz and another may have padded his resume. The idea of Recess Appointments is forgotten. Trump has been taunted with the "Musk Is President" chatter. Some Republicans are taking it seriously and suggesting him for Speaker. And that in turn let Democrats emphasize Trump tanked the deal to benefit his interests with the Chinese Communist Party. And Trump spoke yesterday for the first time in weeks and sounded drunk - which is a problem, because he doesn't drink. All while he is being pursued by his two worst enemies: himself - and Musk. B-BLOCK (27:00) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Remember my suggestion that MSNBC's response to Trump's win and its own tanking ratings was to do nothing but double down and exploit the Liberal Media Monopoly the cowards at CNN, The Washington Post and others were giving them? Guess what! MSNBC's new boss wants... better relationships with Republicans. (40:56) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Martin Shrkeli emerged from his sewer to get owned on social media, New York sends a bill for damages to the family of a guy a police officer killed with an unmarked car, and are there secret Mark Burnett Trump Outtake Tapes? Don't ask Burnett - he now works for Trump. C-BLOCK (50:20) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: You have your Christmas story, I have mine. Mine is about falling off a cliff near Malibu filming a commercial for fast-food chicken. Stick around for the post-closing theme guest appearance Easter eggs courtesy some of my dogs.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SERIES 3 EPISODE 52: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: I suppose it is possible that Trump's brain has liquified, and he's cancelled half his events and all his interviews, and that he is now frantically demanding somebody FORCE Kamala Harris off the ballot and Joe Biden back ONTO it because he's just been shown internal polling indicating he's going to WIN two weeks from Tuesday. Or nah. He's just been shown internal polling indicating he's going to LOSE. Why else would he demand that she "be investigated and forced off the campaign, and Joe Biden be allowed to take back his rightful place" because 60 Minutes screwed up the editing the editing of its Harris interview? Trump is crazy and getting crazier, but this reeks of somebody showing him internal polling indicating he's going to LOSE two weeks from Tuesday which means that he might avoid ONE of the criminal cases that would send him off to die in prison but he ain't going to avoid BOTH of them and as the expert on cults and cult leaders Matthew Remski wrote the other day, Trump has become one of those quote “cultic leaders who – exhausted, ill – and at the end of their cognitive rope” reduced to a “shrinking repertoire of melted talking points.” Especially given that a network idiotically edits a clip with a presidential candidate means the. Presidential candidate has to drop out? So Harris has to drop out, and of course since Fox edited out the part where Trump talks about the enemy within, Trump also has to drop out so two Tuesdays from now it's the presidential election between Tim Walz and Jayvee Vance? MEANWHILE, IF SHE WINS it will have been sealed by the 24-hour span in which she looked authoritative and righteously indignant while on Fox News, followed by the moment some pro-Trump hecklers crashed her rally in Wisconsin and her response was... well, put it this way: There were no heckler survivors. B-Block (19:04) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: BBC News cancels one of the most informative news programs in the world: "HardTalk" dead after three decades. Dead inside: Christina Bobb predicts a surge of celebrities endorsing Trump after the election because...they're all pedophiles? So she's not just One America One Reich television crazy but QAnon crazy? And Chris Licht is tanned, rested, and ready, to help rebuild the fractured media landscape he personally helped fracture. C-Block (28:21) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: He never wrote a novel, he did write a history of The New Yorker, he did write epic short stories like “The Greatest Man In The World” and at least three that became movies. But then there are his miniatures – his polished gems. His fables. There is more cynicism, more criticism, more liberalism, per square inch, in these – than in any other examples of his writing. So this week three of the Fables of James Thurber: "The Unicorn In The Garden," "The Moth And The Star," "The Rabbits Who Caused All The Trouble."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tech's tentacles are wrapped around almost every segment of the media industry. They haven't just choked off a large part of the ad revenue media companies relied on — Americans now consume media on devices built by tech companies and platforms owned by tech giants, and their algorithms often dictate what media we engage with. To explore, question, and analyze the myriad intersections between the tech and media, Kara is joined by three of the sharpest reporters covering these two worlds. Oliver Darcy is the founder of Status, a new newsletter on beehiiv that covers the media. He's the former senior media reporter at CNN, where he covered the intersection of media, politics, and technology. Charlotte Klein is a features writer and media columnist at New York Magazine, who previously covered media for Vanity Fair. Media reporter Oliver Darcy, recently of CNN's "Reliable Sources" newsletter, on leaving the global news giant to launch Status -- which publishes directly to readers. We discussed cable's brutal year; the struggle to get people to pay for news; and the risk-reward profile of building it yourself in 2024.
Oliver Darcy, former CNN reporter, discusses his decision to start his own newsletter called Status. He emphasizes the importance of independent journalism and holding media outlets accountable. Darcy believes that media reporting is often neglected in mainstream press, leading to the spread of lies and misinformation. He also criticizes the lack of strong leadership and editorial oversight in news organizations. Darcy and Brian discuss the challenges of covering Trump and the need for news outlets to be more cautious in giving him excessive attention. They both express concerns about the state of the press and the impact of economic pressures and lack of diversity in ownership. Oliver Darcy discusses the importance of local media and the challenges it faces in the digital age. He emphasizes the need for strong hyper-local outlets that cover basic neighborhood news and events. Oliver also highlights the importance of storytelling in journalism and the need for local news organizations to adapt to the digital world. He expresses hope for the future of journalism, but acknowledges that the industry will undergo significant changes.Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/JATQPodcastIntragram: https://www.instagram.com/jatqpodcastYoutube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCET7k2_Y9P9Fz0MZRARGqVwThis Show is Available Ad-Free And Early For Patreon supporters here:https://www.patreon.com/justaskthequestionpodcastPurchase Brian's book "Free The Press" Follow Brian's Salon articles!
Mediaite editor Aidan McLaughlin sits down with veteran media reporter Oliver Darcy to discuss his sudden exit from CNN and his new venture "Status." Darcy, who helmed the wildly popular "Reliable Sources" newsletter for years at CNN, often clashed with leadership at the network thanks to his strident criticism of the industry that didn't spare his own employer. Darcy spoke about tensions inside CNN, his refusal to call Fox News a “news network,” the future of cable television, his own career in conservative media, and why Tucker Carlson owes him $1,000. This episode was produced by Brandon Reschke and Kathryn Wilkens.
Investigative journalist Ben Swann has compiled substantial evidence demonstrating that the Israeli government was aware well in advance that Hamas was planning the October 7th attacks. Not only did Egypt warn Israel and the IDF had collected their own intelligence, but Hamas was staging obvious military exercises leading up to the fateful date. Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger talk to Swann about why the Netanyahu government might have allowed this attack to take place. Plus segments on CNN writer Oliver Darcy's desperate but failed attempts to get Tucker Carlson's tour canceled and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham's admission that the Ukraine War is all about securing Ukraine's trillions of dollars in resources for the US & NATO and depriving China and Russia.
The question of the day is "Did President Joe Biden POOP his pants while at the 80th anniversary of D-DAY in Normandy, France today? Below is the Daily Beast attempting to debunk it, watch my video as I explore the entire situation and make up your own mind. https://youtu.be/sKXN1yb8hns President Joe Biden delivered a forceful speech Thursday in France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landing, warning that “democracy is not guaranteed” and “the price of unchecked tyranny is the blood of the young and the brave.” MAGA trolls reacted by accusing the president of pooping in his pants. While many observers' attention was focused on the president's address honoring the last living veterans of the invasion of Normandy, the rapid response social media team of the Republican National Committee was instead preoccupied with Biden briefly crouching before taking a seat. In a 13-second clip posted to social media, the president is seen shaking hands with French President Emmanuel Macron before turning toward first lady Jill Biden. He then slightly squats down while reaching for something behind him. The brief video ends with an announcer welcoming Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to the stage while Jill Biden appears to whisper something to her husband. “Awkward,” the RNC Research account captioned the video, alongside a grimacing face emoji. Pro-Trump influencers and right-wing provocateurs quickly ran wild with the clip, claiming it was definitive proof that the president had soiled his trousers. Dave Rubin, the “ex-lefty turned shitposting Trump stan,” wondered whether Biden was “pooping or sitting in an invisible chair,” adding a poop emoji to his tweet to hammer home the message. Dispensing with Rubin's “just asking questions” framing, beanie aficionado and far-right podcaster Tim Pool blared “HE POOPED” and “HOLY SHIT” in all caps, claiming that the president needed to quickly leave the ceremony to clean himself up. Breaking911, a junk news X (formerly Twitter) account that boasts a million followers, helped spread the narrative to the MAGA masses by reposting the clip with the caption: “Did Biden shit his pants AGAIN?” That would appear to be in reference to a baseless 2021 claim that the Vatican had to cancel a livestream of Biden's meeting with Pope Francis because the president had a “bathroom accident.” Other prominent right-wing media personalities asserted that “there's no way Joe is not pooping himself here” and “Biden just pooped his diaper,” much to the delight of their millions of social media fans. The reality of the situation, though, is far less messy. A couple of seconds after the clip the RNC shared online ends, the president locates the chair behind him and takes a seat alongside the rest of the contingent on stage. Taken in context, Biden seems neither out of place nor in the midst of a bathroom emergency. In fact, it was after this so-called accident or confusion over an “invisible chair” that the president delivered his emotive address while juxtaposing the historic war against the Nazis with the current battles against authoritarianism. “In their generation, in their hour of trial, the Allied forces of D-Day did their duty,” Biden declared. “Now the question for us is, in our hour of trial, will we do ours?” The president's speech received some plaudits from conservative pundits. Bill McGurn, a former George W. Bush speechwriter and Fox News contributor, said Biden “looked in command” and delivered the speech “very well” with “no major stumbles.” But while some Fox News analysts were praising the speech, the conservative cable giant also ran wild with the RNC Research clip to insist that the president is suffering from “spatial disorientation” and that he “appeared confused” on the stage in Normandy. The network's mockery of Biden's supposed confusion was also framed within the context of The Wall Street Journal's recent 3,000-word investigative report that he “shows signs of slipping” behind the scenes, feeding into the GOP's narrative that the 81-year-old president is cognitively impaired. The WSJ article has not only been pilloried by Democrats and liberals, who have labeled it “comically weak,” but also by mainstream media journalists. CNN senior reporter Oliver Darcy lambasted the Journal for largely relying on Republicans to draw “their sweeping conclusion” about the president's mental fitness. “It is difficult to imagine that the newspaper, or any outlet, would run a similar story declaring that Trump is ‘slipping' behind the scenes based on the word of top Democratic figures—despite the fact that the Democratic leadership has demonstrated a much stronger relationship with the truth in recent years than their Republican counterparts,” Darcy noted.

The through line for this episode is the utter panic occurring in the Party as tech, big finance, academia, the deep state, and medical technocrats are forced by God to rhetorically reveal who and what they are. It is fascinating to watch. The President of Harvard, Claudine Gay, is a plagiarist, but she is being allowed to change her work. See, she didn't actually plagiarize; she just forgot to footnote and put quotes around what others have said. She just forgot, on 18% of her work. And, the people who defend her do not have any ability to hear themselves. They are panicking. At COP28, Al Gore demands that internet algorithms be banned as he explains it leads to the feared descent into the rabbit hole. Alex Jones has been reinstated to Twitter, and CNN is terrified. God is forcing them to rhetorically reveal themselves. What does God's Word say? Psalm 37:13-22 13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming.14 The wicked draw the sword and bend the bowto bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright.15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken.16 Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked;17 for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous.18 The blameless spend their days under the Lord's care, and their inheritance will endure forever.19 In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.20 But the wicked will perish: Though the Lord's enemies are like the flowers of the field, they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.21 The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously;22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land, but those he curses will be destroyed.Episode 1,276 Links:The students at the Harvard Crimson are young, idealistic, and honest enough to write that Claudine Gay committed plagiarism. CNN hosted a Vivek Ramaswamy town hall Wednesday night in Iowa. Abby Phillips moderated the event with Vivek Ramaswamy...but CNN employees were angry with the network hosting Vivek Ramaswamy. CNN senior media reporter Oliver Darcy...wrote a scathing article blasting CNN. We reveal and react to this article from Oliver Darcy. We explain why CNN chose to give an hour in primetime to Vivek Ramaswamy...instead of candidates like Nikki Haley and Robert Kennedy. We also react to a clip of Vivek Ramaswamy from the town hall...and question why Vivek Ramaswamy would waste time appearing on CNN.
It's a big week for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (but please don't make us call it that), and we're celebrating with a deep dive into Loki ahead of this Thursday's finale that seems destined to set up the next phase of Avengers mayhem (whether we like it or not). We'll be back in your feeds next week with our thoughts on the season finale, but that's not the only Marvel-ing in the news: After months of reshoots and delays The Marvels hits theaters this weekend and promises to reunite us with some of our favorite characters from the Disney+ series WandaVision and Ms. Marvel (if only we can remember those long-ago shows). We'll dive deep into the interconnected Marvel mess and discuss whether the company's new “Spotlight” branding for more standalone series will chart a new path forward. But first! We're asking the hard questions that the streaming universe refuses to answer: Just how much is a Hulu worth these days? (Disney is about to find out!) What's going on with the forbidden episode of Bluey? Who has the better strategy to jam ads in our eyes: Netflix or Amazon? Why is YouTube willing to lose over a billion dollars a year just to carry NFL Sunday ticket? And should Marvel arch-villain Kang be replaced?? (Spoiler alert: Yes!) ———

Oliver Darcy is the Senior Media Reporter at CNN. His nightly newsletter, Reliable Sources, is the top source for media news and commentary. Darcy has been outspoken about Fox News and the inability of mainstream media to call it what it really is, a right- wing talk network. We read his newsletter every night. It's free and you can sign up here reliablesources.com.Here is a summary of Bill's conversation with Oliver. Darcy discussed the state of media and news consumption today. He criticized Fox News for its reluctance to address significant issues within the Republican Party and its role as a mouthpiece for the party. Darcy also discussed the impact of social media and AI on news consumption, noting that the landscape is more fractured than ever. He expressed concern about AI's potential to spread misinformation and capitalize on the work of news outlets without crediting them. Darcy also touched on the changes at CNN, including the introduction of a new generation of news anchors and the shift towards streaming with CNN Max. He noted that the business model around linear television is contracting faster than anticipated.Today's Bill Press Pod is supported by The Laborers' International Union of North America . Host Brian Stelter explores Donald Trump's tangled relationship with Fox News with Sarah Ellison, national enterprise reporter at The Washington Post, and Oliver Darcy, senior media reporter at CNN. Trump's decision this week to skip the first Republican debate on Fox News only escalates his war with the Murdochs, even as the cable channel's hosts remain largely in the former president's corner. And given Trump's commanding lead in the 2024 primary, it's looking like Fox needs Trump more than he needs them. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
EPISODE 220: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: Mark Meadows has flipped. There's no other possible conclusion. The news has been coming for weeks. Per ABC, Meadows testified to the Jack Smith Election Grand Jury and to the Jack Smith Documents Grand Jury. And 20 members of the Trump Secret Service detail - past or present - have been subpoenaed to testify in Washington, while we begin to see what the third Smith Grand Jury in Miami is all about and how it might but Trump on trial there and not Washington. And this all explains both why Bloomberg reports "Trump representatives in recent weeks have asked for recommendations of Washington-based counsel with trial experience…” and why Trump returned yesterday to stochastic terrorism. He made social media posts demanding that his thugs "fight" to prevent his indictment, just as he told the crowd on the Ellipse in Washington on January 6 to "fight" the certification. Dismiss Trump and his animal-like cunning and destructive skill at your peril and OUR peril. What you think you see in him is as bad as you think it is. Or worse. Always. Always. On January 6th. Yesterday. The Truth Social posts were made in hopes of getting somebody to attack Jack Smith or Merrick Garland or someone. The Trump thinking is not complex: "This other creature is in my way. Destroy this other creature." B-Block (17:32) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Chris Licht does it again! ANOTHER presidential town hall - and how you can get one. And when is the parade for CNN Media Reporter Oliver Darcy and will he be riding in the front car or in the metaphorical hearse in the back? (21:29) IN SPORTS: Don't delude yourself. The PGA golf tour did not "merge" with LIV Golf. It sold itself to the Saudis, after a year of talking about Saudi blood money. It's despicable and it will either be prevented, or it will destroy the sport in the country. And Jacob deGrom is probably out of baseball until Opening Day 2025. Who didn't see that coming? (26:59) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: It's condescending, proselytizing Harris Faulkner of Fox - and her pronouns are D,U,M,B. C-Block (32:20) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Speaking of a great pitcher like Jacob deGrom, I actually once covered for one of the great pitchers of all-time, a jerk named Roger Clemens, because while he almost got in a fight with a fan during the World Series and I got it on tape, it truly wasn't his fault. So I suppressed the tape and cost myself a job.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Host Roy Wood Jr., correspondent Desi Lydic, and senior producer Matt Negrin discuss the digital series Desi Lydic Foxsplains, and how right-wing news outlets spread misinformation. EPISODE 202: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: Evidence mounts that CNN really did pack the audience at the Trump Town Hall, really did seed the crowd with almost nothing but Trump supporters. And it mounts that CNN let Trump choose the moderator (or at least veto other options to BE the moderator). And it mounts that CNN let Trump pick which pro-Trump talking heads appeared on CNN after the fixed Trump Rally ended. And it also mounts that CNN Chairman Chris Licht has intensified his criticism of the ONLY CNN front-facing talent to dare to even LIGHTLY criticize the decision to prostitute the network, Oliver Darcy, and that Darcy is deciding whether or not to quit before he gets fired. Chris Christie has now joined New Hampshire governor John Sununu in asserting that the 400 "Republican and independent primary voters" were not just random people with a variety of favored candidates. Christie: "CNN went in the tank to get Trump on there. They allowed him to negotiate who was going to be in that audience. And those were all Trump supporters. That was a negotiation deal that Trump did with CNN" Governor Sununu: "I knew pretty much everybody in that audience. They're all Trump supporters." CNN is already in "Quiz Show" territory. 60 years ago corruption like this led to Congressional hearings and Grand Juries. It should lead that way again. Semafor News ids now reported new details of the Licht "fear of God" meeting with his lone on-the-record in-house critic, Oliver Darcy - and potentially a far more dire outcome. Quoting Max Tani's piece “In the aftermath of the meeting and coverage, Darcy has wondered to colleagues whether he should resign, or if he will be fired by the network...A particularly bitter pill for some CNN employees, was an anonymous comment from a Licht ally to Fox News,”unquote. That comment? Quoting the Fox report, a “source said Licht received a quote ‘ton' of messages from CNN staffers appalled by Darcy's newsletter… the messages, according to the source, were like quote ‘what the eff…'” So now instead of bullying and threatening Darcy, Licht instead had a quote “ally” leak to Fox, of all places, that CNN employees were all on Licht's said and not Darcy's. B-Block (20:04) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Troy Nehls complains about the open border. And the guy on the terrorist watch list they arrested at the open border. Which ain't open. It turns out Elon Musk's "free speech absolutism" means he's absolutely NOT going to pay for a lawyer to protect free speech in Turkey. And the Jamie Comer investigation of the Bidens is going great. Except they don't have any charges or evidence just an informant and a whistleblower and apparently they've LOST THE INFORMANT. (24:30) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Kevin Ettinger (1933-2023) C-Block (36:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: There's nothing new about a major television news operation making illicit, inappropriate deals with Republican presidential campaigns. Not only is it looking more and more like Trump did this with Licht's CNN, but I know from experience that in 2008, John McCain's campaign and the RNC demanded my head as the price of McCain showing up for the presidential debate Tom Brokaw was to moderate. Brokaw was more than happy to help them blackmail NBC. And he would later boast about it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
EPISODE 201: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN This is a new, full, 20-minute segment of the news breaking Friday night about CNN's Trump Town Hall. The closing two blocks of this podcast are repeated from Episode 200 from 5.12.23. A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: CNN's amoral anti-journalistic thug chairman Chris Licht reportedly called the network's only internal on-the-record critic of its telecast of the Trump Nuremberg rally into his office and with at least three other senior executives present, "Put The Fear Of God" into media reporter Oliver Darcy. Additional reporting indicates Licht and CNN manipulated crowd reaction at the "Town Hall" site by telling the audience how it could and could not react. Trump reportedly agreed to do the CNN event because it knew it could manipulate moderator Kaitlan Collins. The numbers don't lie: CNN primetime ratings drop 8% from pre-Trump levels. And Anderson Cooper's snide "living in a silo" remark is disproved by data: Since 2010 CNN has mentioned Trump supporters twice as much as those of all other presidential nominees and presidents combined. And Anderson is boiled alive by his friend and former CNN colleague Sunny Hostin on "The View": she says he's gaslighting us - and she's right. And most importantly: The decisions and the deciders who inflicted upon us the Trump Town Hall reflected journalistic malpractice and citizenship betrayal. Anderson Cooper's maudlin and condescending attack on his own audience, and the silence of Wolf Blitzer and Jake Tapper and Erin Burnett and ALL of CNN's reporters and commentators are MORAL failings. Ladies and gentlemen of CNN, do you STAND for anything? Does the organization MEAN anything to you? I wasn't there on Day One but I WAS there at the end of YEAR ONE and I'm damn proud of it, and I grieve what Chris Licht has done by prostituting it. YOU are the ones, Wolf Blitzer, Jake Tapper, Erin Burnett, even Anderson Cooper up there on your high horse, YOU are the ones keeping the original noble idea – news unrestrained by the need to put on ‘The Beverly Hillbillies' at 8 PM, while making money – YOU are the ones charged by history, and your own ambitions and principals, with PROTECTING the idea of CNN, and in a broader sense, with PROTECTING journalism and in a broader sense STILL, with protecting DEMOCRACY. Are you going to DO it? Are you going to RISK something? Have you really all been working there for decades and NOT yet made enough money for the rest of your lives? Is there ANYONE at CNN willing to place their craft and their responsibility ahead of their paycheck, or… nah, let's just let the media critic do it, by himself. Shouldn't you go in there WITH him and say enough? Because guess what? Staying out of the fray and protecting your paycheck may work short term. May work for years. Or then again, it may not. There are a lot of ambitious anchors without any standards out there. Maybe it'd be better if you took a risk now in defense of, you know, the United States of America – even if Chris Licht DID get you fired. I mean which would you rather HAVE on your tombstone? I got fired because I protested when my network's new paste-easting boss Chris Licht sold us out to Donald Trump? Or I got fired because they wanted to expand Kaitlan Collins Tonight… to FIVE HOURS? B-Block (24:11) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Biden really does seem poised to spring the 14th Amendment on Republican Debt Ceiling Hostage-Takers; Why is every news report calling the white man who choked another man to death on the NYC subway a "Navy veteran" rather than what they would call a person of color, something like "Crazed Subway Strangler"? THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: There is ONE political boss still backing George Santos. There is one presidential campaign running on a promise to disenfranchise some of the people who would elect him. There is one CNN on-air person praising Kaitlan Collins' persistent impotence. C-Block (33:30 EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: The brindle mix on the kill list in New York is named, in sad irony, "Free." EPISODE 200: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The journalistic malfeasance was so thorough, the internal staff rage so vituperative, and the on-air ratings so underwhelming, that if Anderson Cooper or Wolf Blitzer or Jake Tapper or all of them went into the office of Chris Licht's boss this afternoon and said that the Trump Town Hall was the final straw and it had damaged theirs and the network's credibility and they were walking out, Licht would be gone from CNN by Monday. Instead, Cooper blamed his own audience! He began his program last night regretting… that CNN viewers were “staying in their silos” and directing his infamous condescension to his own audience, or what's left of it after the Trump debacle. “Now, maybe you haven't been paying attention to him since he left office… thinking it can't happen again…” Cooper's premise – that to understand Trump and the threat he poses, we have to approve of CNN's capitulation to and collaboration with him, is absurd, indefensible, and sanctimonious. Instead of using his platform to bravely recognize that the threat of Trump is paralleled within CNN by the threat of Chris Licht and the conservatives he's prostituting the network for, instead of showing just SOME guts, Anderson Cooper decided to try to guilt whoever was left to watch CNN last night. Shame on him. The CNN town hall drew 3,308,000 TOTAL viewers, and 781,000 demo viewers. But just one hour after the Hindentrump crashed and burned live on CNN, the ratings bump was GONE. In the 10 O'Clock hour CNN was back to third place, half a million total viewers BEHIND Fox, 300,000 behind MSNBC. Three quarters of the total audience had vanished before midnight. By the ELEVEN O'Clock hour that “demo” audience of 781,000 had shrunk back to 186,000. They got nothing out of it. Nobody stayed. Nobody saw it and said “I like this new CNN. I'm going to try out their other shows. Like 'No You're Wrong Mr. President With Kaitlan Collins.'" B-Block (20:00) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Biden really does seem poised to spring the 14th Amendment on Republican Debt Ceiling Hostage-Takers; Why is every news report calling the white man who choked another man to death on the NYC subway a "Navy veteran" rather than what they would call a person of color, something like "Crazed Subway Strangler"?
