One of the coolest sports stories of the young new year was Golden State Warrior Pat Spencer being guarded by his younger brother, Memphis Grizzlies rookie Cam Spencer, in a game on Saturday, Jan. 4. It was the latest crescendo of a pair of incredible athlete journeys that were heavily influenced on the lacrosse fields at Boys' Latin (Md.) and Loyola University Maryland. After winning the Tewaaraton Award in 2019, Spencer played a year of basketball at Northwestern and has since worked his way through the NBA G-League to sign a two-way contract with the Warriors. Meanwhile, Cam — who also played lacrosse for the Lakers — started his college basketball career at Loyola, then transferred to Rutgers before finishing his career as a national champion with UConn in April. He was selected with the 53rd overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and made his debut with the Grizz in November while also logging minutes (and success) with the G-League Hustle. Though the Spencers' focus is squarely on maximizing their NBA dreams, they also have an eye on life after basketball, which is why they've invested in a startup called Chillshark. Founded by Pat's BL teammate Keegan O'Connor, a 2014 Under Armour All-American who played at Maryland and High Point, Chillshark is a device that can convert any device into a cold plunge. Recorded on Dec. 3, Pat, Cam and Keegan joined IL's Terry Foy to discuss their journey to that point, as well as the merits of cold therapy and how O'Connor plans to go about building the business.
Dan Hurley said it best: this season is no coronation. That's what Husky fans were getting used to. At the end of last season, UConn men's basketball was an inevitable monster, finishing with 13 straight wins and a second consecutive national championship bolstered by double Big East crowns after one of the most dominant postseason performances of all time. This year's team is capable of returning to the promised land, but it is not going to be as pretty or fun. The Huskies have a lot to improve on and with Liam McNeeley out injured, they'll have to grow up a lot over the next month. In this episode, the crew reacts to the rollercoaster Providence game and this roster's prospects without McNeeley. We also caught up on key storylines around the Big East and the glorious moment of Husky legend Cam Spencer sharing the court in an NBA game with his brother Pat.Enjoy!Photo: Ian Bethune This is a public episode. Locked On UConn - Daily Podcast on University of Connecticut Huskies Football and Basketball
On today's mini-pod, we discuss the emergence of Liam McNeeley as the leader of this UConn team, following his 26-point, 8-rebound performance in a crucial win. We break down why McNeeley has taken the reins, how his all-around play is elevating the team, and why the criticism he's faced is unwarranted. We also dive into Aidan Mahaney's role and how Dan Hurley can unlock his potential by creating opportunities for him to play off the ball. Finally, with Samson Johnson out and Xavier missing Zach Freemantle, we explore the opportunities ahead for Tarris Reed to dominate in UConn's frontcourt. Segment 1: Liam McNeeley's Team Liam McNeeley proved once and for all that this is his team after a standout performance in UConn's latest win. While Alex Karaban, Hasson Diarra, and Solo Ball all contribute to winning, it's McNeeley who has emerged as the go-to player when the Huskies need a shot creator. His 26 points and 8 rebounds showed his ability to dominate in a variety of ways—inside, outside, and even as a distributor. Dan Hurley himself compared McNeeley to Cam Spencer, calling him a player “born” to fill that role. We also address the unfounded criticism McNeeley has received, pushing back against those doubting his impact. Segment 2: Unlocking Aidan Mahaney Aidan Mahaney hasn't yet reached his full potential with UConn, and this segment focuses on what needs to change. At St. Mary's, Mahaney excelled as a creator, playing off the ball and working off screens set by savvy point guards like Augustus Marciulionis Jr. For UConn, the key is finding ways to replicate that setup, possibly using Liam McNeeley as a point forward. Allowing Aidan to run off curls and attack without relying on heavy dribbling could unlock his scoring ability. With Ahmad Nowell returning from injury soon to take over more point guard minutes, now is the time to carve out a defined role for Aidan in the rotation. Segment 3: Tarris Reed's Big Opportunity With Samson Johnson sidelined and Xavier's Zach Freemantle out, Tarris Reed has a major chance to shine. Reed has already shown flashes of dominance with his physicality, rim protection, and ability to finish in the paint. This game presents an ideal matchup for Reed to take control and potentially solidify his role as a starter. Additionally, Youssef Singare will likely see minutes, and UConn may experiment with small-ball lineups featuring Alex Karaban at the 5. This is a crucial moment for UConn's frontcourt to assert itself as Big East play ramps up.From Liam McNeeley's emergence to Aidan Mahaney's potential and Tarris Reed's big opportunity, there's a lot to watch for as UConn navigates this crucial stretch. With Big East play ramping up, every player's role becomes even more important. Thanks for tuning in, and we'll be back soon to break down what comes next for the Huskies!Ad Reads Ad 1: FanDuel“This episode is brought to you by FanDuel, America's number-one sportsbook. Locked On UConn - Daily Podcast on University of Connecticut Huskies Football and Basketball
On this episode of Locked On UConn, we dive into three major storylines surrounding UConn basketball. First, we discuss Dan Hurley and his wife's appearance on Good Morning America ahead of Big East Media Day, giving us a glimpse into the personal side of the Huskies' head coach. Then, we break down 5-star recruit Braylon Mullins' decision day and the potential impact his commitment could have on UConn's future. Finally, we preview the Big East season, including UConn's preseason rankings despite losing Donovan Clingan, Stephon Castle, Cam Spencer, and Tristen Newton. We'll also touch on Alex Karaban's First Team selection, Solo Ball's snub, and why Dan Hurley voted for Marquette. Will UConn's reign continue? Tune in to find out! Segment 1: Dan Hurley & His Wife on Good Morning America – Personal Side of a Championship Coach We begin with Dan Hurley's recent appearance with his wife, Andrea Hurley, on Good Morning America ahead of Big East Media Day. The Hurleys opened up about their family dynamic, giving fans a rare behind-the-scenes look into the life of UConn's championship-winning coach. We'll talk about how this public appearance humanizes Hurley and shows the emotional support he receives from Andrea, especially given the pressure of leading UConn to back-to-back national titles. Dan Hurley is known for his fiery courtside demeanor, but we'll explore how his personal life reflects his commitment to building not just a championship program but a championship culture at UConn. Hurley's leadership on and off the court is critical, particularly heading into a season where expectations are sky-high. Segment 2: Braylon Mullins Decision Day – Will UConn Land Another Top Recruit? Next, we shift focus to the highly anticipated decision day for 5-star recruit Braylon Mullins from Greenfield, Indiana. Mullins is deciding between UConn, Indiana, and North Carolina, with UConn being the favorite. However, there's always the chance he could opt to stay home and give Indiana a much-needed recruiting win. We'll discuss what Mullins could bring to UConn if he chooses the Huskies, particularly given the recent departures of Donovan Clingan, Stephon Castle, Cam Spencer, and Tristen Newton. Mullins is a dynamic, versatile guard who could help UConn fill some of the gaps left by these key players. But if he chooses Indiana, how does that shift UConn's recruiting strategy? Segment 3: Big East Preview – UConn's Dominance Despite Key Losses In our final segment, we're diving into the Big East preseason buzz, focusing on how UConn, despite losing Donovan Clingan, Stephon Castle, Cam Spencer, and Tristen Newton, remains the favorite to win it all in 2024-25. It's a testament to the strength of UConn's program that they've reloaded well enough to still be considered the top team. However, the loss of these key players presents challenges that will test Dan Hurley's leadership and the depth of UConn's roster. We'll also talk about the preseason All-Conference teams, where Alex Karaban made the First Team but was passed over for Big East Player of the Year in favor of Ryan Kalkbrenner from Creighton. We'll explore whether Kalkbrenner truly deserved the title or if Karaban was overlooked. Additionally, Solo Ball was completely snubbed from any preseason team—a surprising omission that could fuel him heading into the season. Dan Hurley even cast his vote for Marquette, making UConn essentially the unanimous pick to top the Big East standings. We'll discuss why Hurley made that choice and how it reflects his mindset for keeping his team motivated.

Lets go back to the future: a lefty combo guard out of Sharpsburg Maryland, announced his commitment to the Huskies on Friday afternoon. He's the third commit lined up for the class of 2023, and the second in the last week.Solo Ball — already in the running for best name in college sports — chose UConn over DePaul, USC, Miami, and some school in Rhode Island. He's the 69th-ranked player in 247's Composite Top 150 and the third-ranked player out of Maryland.Ball plays at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, the same school that produced Jalen Adams. This past spring, Ball was teammates with newest UConn commit Jayden Ross on Team Melo, Carmelo Anthony's grassroots program.Ball's performance on the Nike EYBL Indianapolis session sent his stock skyrocketing to start the summer, after averaging 17.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 steals, all while shooting 57 percent from the field. BIG GAME POTENTIAL 9 pts off the bench against Indiana 7 pts off the bench against Texas both games he played 26 and 29 minutes respectively His best game came against another fellow 1 seed in last years tournament, North Carolina, 13pts 50 pct from 3 in 29 minutes Wax poetic about SOLO, I went back int eh archives to Sept 5 of last year, He's a tough kid, Both of his parents are from Baltimore, my favorite recruiting quote, Solo still plays like a 5 ft 5 guard, ,which he was till his sophomore year in highschool. Bred for toughness. “Whatever the team needs, i'm here too do it, idc how many pts I score, i'm here to hoop and help the team win” If that doesn't sound like a Dan Hurley guy, I don't know what is. Lets talk-legacy, SHould blue bloods follow the UConn way and hire outside of the family, that coming up after this..,FAN DUEL Passion, drive, and patience— the formula for winning championships is also what keeps your ride-or-die alive. eBay Motors has everything you need to maintain your vehicle and level it up to peak performance. Just ask Cam Spencer, who does every little thing he can to dial in his wellness, reduce inflammation in his body and make sure he's eating foods that fuel him - and he does that with the help of one of Connecticut's best wellness brands. Here's what he has to say about it: “I chose to partner with The Feel Good Lab because I wanted to elevate my performance, improve my health, and become more educated on my nutrition. Since we started working together, all of those goals have been reached. Now, I am continuing to find new ways to get better with the Feel Good team and am very grateful for our partnership!” In fact, that exactly why I (Mark) wanted to partner with Ryan and The Feel Good Lab. Plant-based pain relief and recovery tools, the highest quality supplements, and an at home diagnostic test, that measures what foods in MY body actually trigger inflammation. Plus, they are an official partner of UConn Basketball. I'm on week 5 of my wellness journey and so far I feel like i'm in my 20s again. So check out the feel good lab, . Use code “CAMSPENCER” for 12% off your order and a 10% donation to Bleeding Blue For Good. Had a rare respectful conversation with Duke fans last night aton Twitter. about Jon Scheyer. ANd i started thinking about this when i listed to Dan on Jim Rome talking his journey. It almost sounded, and i know this isn't his intention, he was pointing out that in todays society we take shortcuts, That he took the traditional route to being the top of his profession and I wanted to talk about that but that's what prompted me to talk about this today briefly. THere isn't a more compelling use case for hiring internally vs going outside of the family than Uconn with Kevin Ollie and Dan Hurley. The beautiful thing for UConn fans is, even with K.O.'s faults we still won a title in his 2nd year which is such an outlier it's amazing in itself. And it' snot just duke, it's other blue bloods like carolina. Hubert davis, long time assitant took over for Roy Williams. Made a final four in his 2nd year lost int he title game to Kansas. So it's jus tsoemthing to think about husky fans. If Dan Was to leave, do we do what We did in the past and hire Kimani or Luke… or do we go outside the family? Goign to chat TBT, comign up after this: Fan duel: I love sports. I love them so much I never want them to stop. But as the playoffs wind down, we get fewer games. And the sports aren't sportsing like I want them to. But FanDuel lets me keep the sports going whenever I want. All I have to do is open the app and dream up bets any time I'm in the mood. And this summer, FanDuel is hooking up ALL CUSTOMERS with a boost or a bonus, DAILY! Elam Ending: SOOOO TBT and the Stars fo Storrs: first tell the fans about it, because for a hoops head like me, I've wanted Uconn to get involved for the past 10 years, so how did this come about? Main Topic: Big East Media Deal Media Partners and Financial Terms: The Big East's current deal with Fox and CBS (12 years, $500M) is ending. The new deal sees significant rights fee increases, underscoring the growing value of Big East sports.Fox remains the lead network, continuing its long-standing partnership with the Big East.CBS exits, replaced by NBC and TNT, diversifying media partners and likely enhancing exposure.Importance for the Big East: Securing this deal is crucial for the Big East's stability, especially as college sports media contracts become increasingly lucrative.Unlike power conferences with football, the Big East relies solely on basketball, making successful media negotiations vital.Comparison to Other Conferences: The Big Ten and SEC have massive deals worth over $1B annually, highlighting financial disparities. The Big East, without football, occupies a unique position but strengthens its stature through basketball success.Challenges and Antitrust Issues: The Big East faces challenges from a recent antitrust settlement requiring non-Power Five schools to cover 35% of nearly $2.8B owed to former athletes. This financial strain adds to the importance of securing favorable media deals.Implications for UConn and Beyond: Stability for the next six years is assured, but the landscape of college sports after that remains uncertain. This deal may quiet any ACC/Big East or UConn to the Big 12 rumors.Long-term planning remains critical, as the future of the Big East past this deal is unpredictable.Recruiting Insights and Player Profiles: Recap our conversation with Tobias Bass on recruiting.Discuss potential new members of the UConn family.Top talent linked to UConn: Meleek Thomas, AJ Dybantsa, Braylon Mullins.Audio clips from yesterday's show to highlight key points.Current Roster and NBA Draft Prospects: Donovan Clingan: Predicted to be the first pick in the NBA Draft.Stephon Castle: Why he makes sense for the Spurs.Predictions for Tristen Newton and Cam Spencer in the NBA Draft.
