Born into a family of inventors (Fun fact…my great grandfather invented the delay mechanism for the bomb in WWII), I’ve been dreaming up products for as long as I can remember. Whether it was finding an innovative way to organize my Barbie’s clothes, dreaming up a better solution for storing and organizing nail polish or creating an easier way for my mom to organize her Tupperware, my mind was always racing with ideas. I was obsessed with finding better ways to do anything and everything. In 2010, I came across an opportunity that would finally allow me to take my ideas and turn them into real life products on the store shelf. I became the winning inventor on Kelly Ripa’s reality TV venture, Homemade Millionaire. It was the experience of a lifetime and gave me the courage to follow me dream of becoming a successful inventor. Product innovation became my passion and a way of life for me. Yes, I officially became a nerdy inventor! After bringing several of my product innovations to life on HSN, QVC and in big box retail nationwide, I partnered with a popular online retailer to help them build their Travel category from the ground up. As a travel junkie myself logging over 150,000 miles per year, this was a very exciting opportunity for me. After doing extensive market research for the project and reviewing thousands of travel products, one thing become crystal clear—the vast majority of luggage and travel accessories were created by men, for men. Very few of them had given any thought to the unique needs of the female traveler—neither in function, nor style. Being the inventor that I am, I saw a void in the market and quickly became obsessed with the idea of developing affordable luggage and travel accessories that would be incredibly chic and stylish, while also keeping us meticulously organized and efficient when we’re on the go. And Travel Essentials by Marcy McKenna was born. I truly hope you enjoy using my products as much I’ve enjoyed creating them! Laura Peter is the Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Deputy Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). In this role, she is responsible for all agency operations and managing approximately 13,000 employees. Prior to joining the USPTO, Ms. Peter was the Deputy General Counsel of A10 Networks, where she oversaw daily legal matters related to commercial agreements, litigation, and intellectual property (IP) portfolio development. In 2014, she helped shepherd the company through its initial public offering. Ms. Peter has practiced IP law for over 20 years. Previously, she was Vice President and General Counsel of Immersion Corporation, where she led all aspects of the company’s legal issues, including its IP portfolio. She was also Assistant General Counsel and Director of Intellectual Property at Foundry Networks, where she built a successful patent portfolio and litigation program. She began her career as a commercial and IP litigator at Townsend, Townsend and Crew (now Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP). Ms. Peter received a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering from Cornell University and a master’s in public policy from the University of Chicago. She also holds a Juris Doctor from Santa Clara University School of Law and a Master of Law degree in international business law from King’s College London. -- Tampa, FL -- Student finalists in grades K to 12 from Central and South West Florida will compete at the Florida Invention Convention on Saturday, August 10, 2019. The event is being held at the University of South Florida Marshall Student Center from 9 AM to 3 PM. The students have participated in other Invention, Innovation, Entrepreneurship and or STEM Education programs and have been invited to participate with their invention or business and were selected from Alachua, Brevard, Hillsborough, Lee, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk County School Districts for this year's event. Winners of the state finals advance to the National Invention Convention held at The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation next year. "Florida is full of talented and bright young learners, and this celebration of invention gives students the opportunity to share what they have created," said Tracy Zuluaga, coordinator of the Florida Invention Convention. "This competition gets students involved in authentic, project-based learning while demonstrating creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking — all important 21st CenturySkills.” Here's a sampling of some of the great inventions to be showcased this year: 4th grader Leandro Soria-Arteaga, for his invention Easy Cubing 5th grader Phoebe Magas for her invention, The Goggle Saver 6th grader Makana Salim-Uesi for her invention, RCV H20 6th grader Susie Spearman, for her invention, Mouse Trap 8th grader Bradley Rothbaum for his invention, Speak-Up Mobile App 11th grader Shreya Mathur, for her invention, StressMaster The event, now in its second year, has grown to over 7,000 participating students statewide. This year's Convention will feature guest speakers: Florida's own 20 year old Ben Stern, a 2016 Shark Tank winner Carmine Denisco, event sponsor and co-founder of Inventors Launchpad, a Florida-based company that helps bring inventions to market Members of the public and media are welcome. There is no entrance fee. The Florida Invention Convention is sponsored by USF College of Engineering, the National Academy of Inventors (USF Chapter), Inventors Launchpad, Moffitt Cancer Center, the Intellectual Property Law Firm of Saliwanchik, and Lloyd and Eisenschenk. The event is organized by Bright Young Minds Coalition, a Florida non-profit that champions invention and entrepreneurship education in schools and youth organizations.
