Rick Cesari is the Chief Marketing Officer at Direct Branding, an omnichannel branding and marketing company that uses compelling videos to build brands and generate more sales. Before Direct Branding, he was the Founder, President, and CEO of Cesari Media and Cesari Response Television Inc. Rick was the first person to use direct response television marketing to build a national brand (Juiceman® Juice Extractor). By applying similar direct response strategies and video marketing, he has been responsible for helping create and market many iconic brands like Sonicare®, Clarisonic, The George Foreman Grill, OxiClean, Rug Doctor, and GoPro. In this episode… Technology and advertising platforms have changed over the years, but the way we market to people hasn't changed much. According to marketing expert Rick Cesari, it's about understanding basic human psychology, marketing principles, and selling through education. As someone who helped uplift brands like GoPro and Juiceman®, Rick knows the formula to scale through direct response TV marketing. Running TV ads is more of a shotgun blast approach, but it's no less effective than it was years ago. Direct response TV marketing can amplify other channels by 20% to 50%. Because of TV marketing's large-scale awareness and ability to hit all potential demographics, it can elevate your brand and help you build lifetime value. In this episode of the eCommerce Profits Podcast, Joshua Chin sits down with Rick Cesari, Chief Marketing Officer of Direct Branding, to discuss everything you'd want to know about direct response TV marketing. Rick shares why TV marketing is still effective today, the cost of running TV ads, and why it's important to leverage marketing strategies early on. Rick also talks about how he's helped leading brands grow and scale!
Angela is a lawyer who breastfed both of her children and while she exclusively pumped for her first son, she almost exclusively breastfed her second. This meant scheduling pump sessions around meetings and depositions so she could go pump or meet her nanny to breastfeed her son. In this episode we talk about jaundice, fixing clogged ducks in hot tubs, tracking your production with helpful apps. We even discuss how to still pursue your career while wanting to be an involved hands-on mom. He has used direct response strategies plus video marketing, to help build many iconic brands, products like, The Juiceman, Sonicare, The George Foreman Grill, OxiClean, Clarisonic, Rug Doctor, Momentus Golf, The GoPro camera and many others. Rick’s strategies have helped grow four companies from start-ups to over a billion dollars in sales.
With Franchise Euphoria’s upcoming series: How to Build an Enduring and Long-Lasting Franchise, Josh thought it was fitting to call back to one of the podcast’s archived episodes from 2018 that features an interview with Rick Cesari, a brand guru and pioneer in brand-response advertising, who came on Franchise Euphoria to highlight best practices in building your brand identity. Rick Cesari has been a pioneer in Brand Response advertising since the early 1990s. He helped create the concept of 'sell while you brand' and has been the force behind the creation of many of today's top consumer brands such as, The Juiceman, Sonicare, The Breadman, The George Foreman Grill, OxiClean, Clarisonic, Rug Doctor, Momentus Golf and many others. Rick has helped take companies like GoPro from start-up to over a billion dollars in sales in just a few short years. He is the author of "Buy Now, Creative Marketing that gets Customers to Respond to You and Your Marketing," and his book, “Building Billion Dollar Brands,” debuted in Summer 2018 just after this interview was originally published. Key Takeaways: [0:05] Welcome to Franchise Euphoria, the podcast that takes a deep dive into specific topics related to franchising. Franchise Euphoria exists to help individuals who are trying to grow their business through a franchise or franchise-like model. [0:49] Josh introduces today’s callback episode: Building Your Brand with Rick Cesari. [2:54] Josh welcomes Rick to Franchise Euphoria. [3:56] Rick has worked with several big-name companies, but they were not as large as they are today when Rick began working with them and using direct to consumer marketing. [5:12] Rick’s experience with DTC marketing started with his passion for health and nutrition where he conducted a live “infomercial” where there was a live audience listening to their presentation on juice; by the end of the 90-minute presentation, the audience was more than ready to buy. [7:24] His experience has shown that it is most effective to focus on the benefits of the product to the end user that you are trying to market to. [9:52] The difference between brand advertising and brand response is that there’s always some type of offer where you’re asking people to respond. You have to put out a promotion that gives them a reason to respond. [11:24] These concepts can be applied to service-based products as well, not just physical products. You can do this through authentic testimonials of happy customers. [18:20] There are some marketing basics Rick likes to implement such as starting and ending each ad with a brand logo. Also, advertising giveaways can help drive people towards your products. [20:17] Tactics for reaching and targeting consumers has changed somewhat over the years. While you can still reach a mass-audience through DTC marketing, there are many mediums that are cheaper and effective to reach directly to consumers. [22:45] The key to building any brand is finding your unique selling proposition and pushing it toward your audience. [24:04] Offering a very liberal money-back guarantee to get someone to try your product or service is a great way to grab the attention of your consumers. [26:12] The priority and lifeblood of any business is sales. Focusing on how you can get sales in the door will build your brand as your business is growing. [29:24] Most of your company’s branding happens after the sale which is formed based on the customer experience. [30:14] Rick’s book “Building Billion Dollar Brands” is coming out on August 1, which covers many of the topics discussed in today’s interview. [31:39] Now, Rick still works on “fun,” hands-on projects with companies to build their brand, but mostly focuses his time on writing and speaking about brand building. [34:57] Thanks for listening, and please, reach out to Josh anytime through email at josh@indyfranchiselaw.com. If you enjoyed this interview, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts. Come nascono? Step 1: PrevenzionePosso prevenire i punti neri?
On this episode, our guest has a few ideas to help you use video marketing to increase sales. Rick Cesari has been a pioneer in the Direct Response advertising industry since the early ‘90s and has used Brand Response strategies to help build many iconic brands from scratch, including Juiceman, Sonicare, The George Foreman Grill, OxiClean, Clarisonic, Rug Doctor, Momentus Golf and many others. Rick has helped take companies like GoPro from a start-up to over a billion dollars in sales in just a few short years. About Rick Cesari Rick studied biology and was going to be a dentist, but he got tired of school. He moved to Florida, read lots of books about real estate, and went to a seminar to learn how to invest in distressed properties and make a profit. He made $12,000 in a few days. He was so excited about his investment, he went to the editors of Florida Trend, a business magazine, and told them about the seminar. The article about the speaker was instrumental in growing his seminar business, so Rick was asked to help with his marketing. It was the beginning of his highly successful marketing career. Brand Response Strategies Rick says the key to being good at direct response marketing is understanding what makes the consumer respond. He uses a formula from Dale Carnegie’s book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” Tell the audience what you are going to say, say it and then tell them what you said. Rick adds that making videos is a lot like making speeches. You must capture the audience’s attention at the start, or they will continue clicking through the channels. Another formula that Rick uses is called AIDA. The acronym stands for A - capture the person’s Attention I - build Interest D - arouse Desire A - motivate the person to take Action Infomercials often seem repetitive and they are. Using Dale Carnegie’s formula, you say what you are going to say, say it and tell the audience again what you said. They must also solve a problem. Rick says if you cast a wide net with video that visually demonstrates different ways to solve the problem with your product, you will hook the consumer who has that problem in. Your product should have a unique selling proposition and a history of past product sales before considering direct response marketing. You also need a call-to-action at the end so the consumer can respond. Video Persuasion All of these tips and much more are included in Rick’s new book, Video Persuasion,” which is being released on Amazon on Oct. 15, 2019. At the end of each chapter, Rick includes interviews with industry experts that include great insights about video and video marketing. Here are just a few: The messaging is more important than the technical look or quality of a video. Apps like Rev.com allow you to inexpensively transcribe interviews, which is very helpful in the editing process. Make video tutorials for every product or service you sell. Add infographics with pictures listing all the benefits of your product. Have good audio. You can buy a good mic for less than $100. Lighting is also important. It will take your video to the next step. Authenticity is more critical than slickly-produced videos on social platforms. Rick also includes about 10 apps in his book that will save you money and help you with video production. Apps like Lumen 5 and Content Samurai are just a couple examples of Apps that can help you create video. As a bonus, if you visit Rick’s website, you can download information about the three most engaging types of video content. Speaking Engagements Rick also makes appearances and has a range o topics from how to build a $100 million business using direct marketing to brand building. He should know. Four of his clients made billions in sales, including Sonicare, the George Foreman Grill, OxyClean and GoPro. During this podcast, he shared two great stories about George Foreman and GoPro. I'm in love with this brand and this entrepreneur's story and you're about to be too! If you're thinking of starting something to have a massive reach and impact, you're going to want to take notes because we have Karissa Bodnar, owner of Thrive Causemetics giving away all the inside scoop into how she grew her business from zero to what it is today. She seriously held nothing back and we go into everything! “I believe that when we are confident, we are unstoppable.” Karissa and Thrive Causemetics has received accolades like the “Fastest-growing vegan beauty company”, “Forbes 30 under 30 for 2019” and INC magazine's “Badass Female Founders”, but before all that Karissa grew up on a farm in Washington State. She loved creating makeup from roses from her mom's garden and crayons. Since then she has been deep into all things makeup: working as a makeup artist at Sephora during college, working at Clarisonic after college and in L'oreal's luxury division after they acquired Clarisonic. But when she hit a brick wall after losing her friend to cancer at 24, she came to the realization that she had to stop waiting and finally build the beauty company of her dreams. She was passionate about doing more than just selling beauty products but empowering women as well. And a month later she started Thrive Causemetics on her kitchen counter. “If our product wasn't great, people would not buy it.” She funded it all herself, making product formulas on her kitchen counter and fulfilling all the orders out of her 1-bedroom apartment. As she grew, she reached out to people for help, and along the way she captured the hearts of her amazing customers and their word of mouth on social media moved the needle for her. She went from making a thousand dollars a day in sales to hundreds of thousands of dollars a day in sales, in just a few days, and kept growing from there. A part of why it's called ‘causemetics' is because she donates her profits to a lot of charities who help women re-enter the workforce, deal with abuse, recover from cancer and even more - they keep adding more and more women groups in need. You're going to learn in-depth the different stages of her journey and how she was able to get through each stage to where her company is today. Enjoy! “When you realize that the worst that can happen really isn't that bad, you're unstoppable.” Check out the show notes Join the Zero to Influence Bootcamp waitlist Download your FREE guide: 6 Tools YouTubers Use to Get Thousands of Video Views Don't forget to join the Beauty and the Vlog Facebook group for collaborations, YouTube advice, support and more! All The Beauty Tips You Need to Know on How to Prep Your Body Head to Toe! Preparing for any special event in your life whatever it is; whether a wedding, graduation, pageant, photoshoot, or vacation can be time-consuming and expensive enough without adding to the stress of researching and adding new things to your beauty regime and hoping they work and you don’t react to them! Over the years; I’ve had to prep for all of those occasions, as Mrs. Nevada, a WBFF Pro and I was also on stage dancing from the age of 4 while trying to keep my skin healthy even after piling on the makeup and sweaty workout sessions and performances under stage lights. These are some of my favorite beauty tips not just for your face but for your entire body. You don’t have to wait for a special occasion, you can do them anytime and it’s always good to try something new in advance and not last minute. Start with the basics. Everything from paintings, to walls, to us, looks better with a smooth foundation so exfoliate and moisturize like it’s your job, the sooner you start doing this the better. This will help to leave your skin glowing, flush out toxins (your skin is your bodies largest organ) and smooth it out so that it’s the perfect canvas for your spray tan. I love Clarisonic (the body brush attachment) and an Exfoliating Body Scrub For Smooth Skin. Cocoa Butter and coconut oil are both great moisturizers and best applied on damp skin after every shower or bath to lock in as much moisture as possible. Just remember to use sunscreen after applying during the daytime. Next up the less glamorous topic of hair removal. If you’re planning on spray tanning, when it comes to removing body hair you’re probably going to want to get rid of any body hair that will be visible (besides the hair on your head!). Fuzz free skin will give you that smooth, flawless finish you’re looking for. It’s a complete myth that it’ll grow back thicker or darker. It may appear that your hair grows back thicker and coarser at first as the hair shaft naturally tapers at the end, so what you typically see are the thinnest portions of your hair. When you shave, however, you are exposing the thicker part of the hair, making it seem as if each individual strand is taking up a bit more space but it’ll feel softer and back to normal as it gets longer. Scientists have actually conducted studies to test whether shaving affects hair growth and proved that it doesn’t. Just don’t shave directly before tanning as the tanning solution will go into the open hair follicles and leave those little brown dots you might have noticed before if you’ve done that or leave it until the last minute to decide which hair removal method you’re going to use. People react differently to the different types of hair removal methods available and whiteheads, ingrown hairs, rashes, and nicks probably aren’t the look you’re going for! Is anyone else obsessed with spray tans? I love a tan but over the years have less of a real tan and more fake tans to minimize my time in the sun as much as I love it. While there are lots of great fake tanners you can do at home: Coola and Tan Luxe are my favorites and both are cruelty-free save those for day-to-day and get a professional spray tan for special events for that airbrushed look that you see in the magazines. Plus spray tanning artists are pretty amazing with contouring now so if you don’t have abs you can fake them ;) This is going to sound odd but I’d recommend NOT spray tanning your face, or if you do, only do it lightly. The tan can end up looking muddy and can come off unevenly plus it tends to dry the skin out. Your makeup artist or you should easily be able to match and blend your makeup in especially now most of us have a deep color for contouring and bronzer. You know it’s rare that I talk about beauty without referring to nutrition so it goes without saying to reduce salt, sugar (and if you’re of age, alcohol). All of these can contribute to bloating/water retention and dull skin, which is the opposite of the glowing, hydrated skin we want. From about 2 weeks beforehand, don’t chew gum, even the sugar-free kind for a flatter stomach. This can cause bloating, as chewing gum causes you to swallow excess air. The enzymes and acids that are activated when you chew gum (but don’t eat) can also cause “bloating, an overproduction of stomach acid, and can compromise your ability to produce sufficient digestive secretions when you actually do eat food” Nutriciously.com. If you’re worried about your breath use those little portable finger toothbrushes or put a travel size mouth and floss in your bag. Which brings me to teeth. Teeth are one of the biggest factors in making us look older or younger. If your periodic clean doesn’t fall close to your event, think about scheduling another clean to get rid of any plaque build up. Besides your clean, you may want to ask your dentist about Teeth Whitening, if your teeth are healthy and not sensitive. Whether it’s the kind offered by your dentist or the home care kits, a whiter smile always looks more youthful, healthy and fresh and will pop against your tan. Just don’t go overboard, I’m not suggesting you try to look like Ross from Friends! If you’re a fresh-faced no makeup kind of a woman great, but if you like your makeup, if it’s a 1-day event and you can afford it, invest in professional hair and makeup. You’ve worked so hard to look your best for this day and anticipated it for as long as you can remember. If it’s a vacation, you may want to consider eyelash extensions or dying your eyelashes and brows; they’ll save you time doing your makeup when you’re away but still want to look your best but minimize time getting ready so that you can enjoy yourself and relax. Plus, those photos are going to be around for a long time and there are something’s that you can’t photoshop or just end up looking fake. Get a manicure and pedicure. Nails compliment your dress and are another chance to express your personality. I’ve always preferred going for the classic shape and pink but you can add glamour with a glittery topcoat, designs, crystals, whatever you’re feeling. Last thing, smile, relax, pour a glass of champagne and enjoy every minute of your event or vacation that you’ve dreamed of, knowing that you feel and look amazing. Brush cleansers are generally expensive and if you analyze them they aren't the best option for your skin. A good replacement for it are cheap, reusable, cleaner and gentler: Cloths Yes! I am asking you to consider ditching your super popular and very hyped gadget for something so easy and simple such as washcloths. Shall I get to what really matters and tell you why washcloths are better? Alright. If you constantly over brush your skin you can unbalance its pH level. Any brush cleanser (this is not a trait specific of Clarisonic's) that has bristles are hard to sanitize and sterilize even when cleaned often. There's always a high chance of that even after cleansing the heads there's still bacteria living on the bristles and that'll go to your skin. A washcloth, on the other hand, can be easily thrown in the washing machine and be washed with super hot water which will clean it fully and be safe for the next use. Lastly, washcloths are way cheaper. At Pinks Boutique, we retail muslin cloths for £3 each. Even if you buy one for every day of the week you'll still only spend £21 against the massive prices charged by Clarisonic. And you'll have to replace the cloths less often than the brush heads. Nothing But The Truth. Pinks Boutique is an award-winning, eco luxe skincare line used by professionals. Our mission is to create the world's very best organic, vegan friendly skincare and treatments. Our complete range can be used in spas and at home. We believe in telling the truth; no greenwashing, just therapist endorsed, certified organic products and brilliant expert advice that equips you to get the best results. Pinks Boutique. He is the author of "Buy Now, Creative Marketing that gets Customers to Respond to You and Your Marketing," and his newest book, “Building Billion Dollar Brands,” is due out in Summer 2018. Key Takeaways: [0:22] Today’s episode features Rick Cesari, a brand guru and pioneer in brand-response advertising. [2:00] Josh welcomes Rick to Franchise Euphoria. [3:02] Rick has worked with several big-name companies, but they were not as large as they are today when Rick began working with them and using direct to consumer marketing. [4:18] Rick’s experience with DTC marketing started with his passion for health and nutrition where he conducted a live “infomercial” where there was a live audience listening to their presentation on juice; by the end of the 90-minute presentation, the audience was more than ready to buy. [6:30] His experience has shown that it is most effective to focus on the benefits of the product to the end user that you are trying to market to. [8:58] The difference between brand advertising and brand response is that there’s always some type of offer where you’re asking people to respond. You have to put out a promotion that gives them a reason to respond. [10:30] These concepts can be applied to service-based products as well, not just physical products. You can do this through authentic testimonials of happy customers. [17:26] There are some marketing basics Rick likes to implement such as starting and ending each ad with a brand logo. Also, advertising giveaways can help drive people towards your products. [19:23] Tactics for reaching and targeting consumers has changed somewhat over the years. While you can still reach a mass-audience through DTC marketing, there are many mediums that are cheaper and effective to reach directly to consumers. [21:51] The key to building any brand is finding your unique selling proposition and pushing it toward your audience. [23:10] Offering a very liberal money-back guarantee to get someone to try your product or service is a great way to grab the attention of your consumers. [25:18] The priority and lifeblood of any business is sales. Focusing on how you can get sales in the door will build your brand as your business is growing. [28:30] Most of your company’s branding happens after the sale which is formed based on the customer experience. [29:20] Rick’s book “Building Billion Dollar Brands” is coming out on August 1, which covers many of the topics discussed in today’s interview. [30:45] Now, Rick still works on “fun,” hands-on projects with companies to build their brand, but mostly focuses his time on writing and speaking about brand building. [34:11] Thanks for listening, and please, reach out to Josh anytime through email at josh@franchiseeuphoria.com. If you enjoyed this interview, please leave us a review on iTunes.
