We need a better way to translate studies and science into something the public can understand. —Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN, FNP, FGSA, FAAN As a profession, nursing has struggled to effectively engage with the media, resulting in significant underrepresentation in most news stories. The primary experts sought out for healthcare stories are physicians, but nurses often aren't proactive about engaging with the media either. Around 20 years ago, the Woodhull study examined nurses presence in the news and found that nurses were featured only 4% of the time. Fast forward to today, and our representation has dropped to a mere 2%, despite being the most trusted profession for over two decades (see my previous podcast with Dr. Dianna Mason discussing the Woodhull studies here). As healthcare professionals, nurses can and should fully leverage the power of the media to educate the public and showcase our expertise – particularly related to health promotion. Just imagine the incredible impact we could have on the world if we mastered the art of pitching to the media. Whether you're a nurse, a healthcare professional, or a leader in a healthcare organization, this information will help you get started pitching to the media. Our guest is PR Expert Christina Daves, whose insights will be invaluable. So, don't miss out and tune in! Join us on this episode where we delve into the topic of ▶️ Pitching to the Media: The Basics for Healthcare ✔️Are nurses really not advocating for themselves, or is it the media overlooking them? Well, it's actually a combination of both factors. Journalists may not immediately think of nurses when getting interviews for health stories. At the same time, when nurses are approached, many decline the opportunity. It's important for us to take a proactive approach. Let's start embracing our role and contribute our expertise to the media. ✔️Highlight what you think is valuable and newsworthy. Help journalists grasp the significance of your story effortlessly. For example, we pitched a topic about Ageism Awareness Day and linked it to the trending dating show, The Golden Bachelor. By merging these two elements, the pitch becomes a timely and interesting subject. ✔️Boost your online presence Enhance your social media presence by sharing video content that reflects your expertise. Christina advises that TV producers often want to see you on video before inviting you to speak on their shows. It's beneficial to be active on platforms that use hashtags, as this makes it easier for them to discover you. "If you reach out to them without a website, LinkedIn, Instagram, or any online presence, it will be much more challenging to receive a positive response." So, it's important to make sure you have a strong online presence when the media is checking you out. ✔️Craft your WOW Bio. When collaborating with institutions and academia, we tend to use specialized language. However, when dealing with the mainstream media, it's important to communicate in a way that resonates with 15-year-olds. As exceptionally intelligent individuals who have excelled in your fields through research, paper writing, and medical studies – it's time to adjust your thinking, speaking, and writing style to connect with everyday people who are tuned in. We must find a better approach to convert complex studies and scientific concepts into something that the public can easily grasp. How do you stand out in the sea of influencers and content creators and get the publicity you need? In this episode, I speak with the go-to expert for PR and media, Christina Daves. She unloads tried and tested tips to get people to pay attention to you and your business. Here are the key ideas we covered in this episode: ✔️ Christina has put together the three C's to remember to ensure you stand out online: Content, Connection, and Credibility. ✔️ When planning for content, identify what people are ACTUALLY searching for online versus what you BELIEVE people are searching for online. ✔️ Your audience and potential clients will follow you if you allow your expertise and personality to come through in your content — being authentically you will make you shine ten times more! ✔️ If you feel stuck, Christina suggests thinking about who you speak to and the questions people ask you — that's your content right there. Write that article or turn on that camera, and talk about what you're good at. ✔️ Media begets the media. When you start getting mileage, especially with television, do your homework. Spend an hour watching the show, get a feel for it. It pays to be prepared as you build your credibility. ✔️ You don't want to go after Gary Vaynerchuk or Simon Sinek. You're never going to get to them, but if you find micro-influencers and have X amount more followers than you do, create content by tagging them. If they're in alignment with what you do, they might share your content too. Provide value, value, and value. That's how you grow your influence. Connect with Christina Daves Christina is a speaker, on-air expert, publicity strategist, best-selling author, and inventor. This episode features Christina Daves, a PR Strategist. Here, she discusses her firm, how she founded her firm, how she looks at PR, how she councils people, and more.
Hey there, beautiful soul family. As you know, I strive to bring you amazing guests with tales of beating the odds and whose will and mindset are a testament to great faith. Seeing others walk before us helps to motivate us in the areas where we struggle, which is why I love having a wide variety of inspirational guests. Today we are talking about marketing. How to go from the little fish in a big pond to the big whopper. Meet Christina Daves Christina Daves is a repeatedly successful entrepreneur, award-winning inventor, best-selling author, and infectiously energetic speaker. She has sought out opportunities in event planning, land development, retail, and fashion and pursued them with the work ethic that makes her an inspiration. As many business owners know, starting out small leaves little money for marketing. With a fledgling business and a running clock, Christina developed the PR skills in under one year to launch herself and her company into national recognition. Through her two best selling books, The DIY Guide to FREE Publicity and PR For Anyone, and her constant speaking appearances, Christina aids owners and employees to take the small steps required to see success and seize it. A Change of Mindset Christina shared an inspiring story of hope and endurance when she missed her opportunity to be on Shark Tank that would have catapulted her sales and turned her business into a success. And while she did battle with despair for 5 months, her belief in herself and her product helped change her mindset. She was convinced that everything would work itself out. How to Get on TV Christina may have missed the chance to be on Shark Tank, but she wasn't finished yet. She had a thirst to crack the code to marketing and learn all she could about PR. She figured out the secret of how to get TV appearances, how to get your name in the media, and expand your platform. Learning that secret helped her win $20,000 in the inventor competition on the Steve Harvey show. Today she is a huge success, and it started with a missed opportunity on Shark Tank. 5 Tips for How to Improve Your Public Relations [15.20] 1) You have to be "famous" in your industry [16:30] 2) Start small. Look to print media first, and then it's easier to pitch television. [20:05] 3) Start local. Find your local personality anchors and reporters to reach out to and cultivate a relationship with. [21:27] 4) Know how the media operates and do your homework on local segments that are relevant to your work. Always see how you can add value to the audience. [21:54] 5) Research what is being covered and where you might be able to share your gifts and be of service and value to their show. Final Thoughts Christina reminds us that you have to be willing to do the work and invest time in yourself and your business, but you can never be afraid to ask. When pitching yourself and your business, you have to get comfortable pitching to different media outlets. And while you may sometimes hear rejections, nobody wants to see you fail. Adopt that mindset, and it will all work out! In this episode of The Hyperfast Agent Podcast, Christina Daves from PR For Anyone, presents at the Hyperfast Sales Summit. With over 1,000 appearances in the media, Christina and her clients have amassed over 1B views and $100M in revenue. Listen to hear how to captivate your audience to cash in on business success. Episode Highlights: Since February, the entire world has changed because of the ongoing global pandemic. Everyone was forced to move online when the world shut down, making it harder to be more visible. Captivating the audience will help agents stand out in the loud world of online marketing. Christina does not have any traditional PR experience, yet has had an incredible amount of success. It all started when Christina won Steve Harvey's Top Inventor competition. SEO from appearing on local and national television has been tremendous for Christina. Find a way to make people stop their scrolling and really examine your content. Most agents make the mistake of having a generic website, stopping them from standing out in the crowd. You only have 1.7 seconds to grab someone's attention, according to a recent lululemon study. If you are too generic, you will not attract the ideal people that you want to work with. Finding your niche will help you as an agent connect to like-minded people. While you can sell to everybody, honing in your message on a certain niche will help you get media attention. Let people know what you can do for them instantly so you can grab their attention in that short window. Once you have figured out your message, you can hire someone to promote it for you. Becoming famous or being featured in an article will help you stand out from all of your competition. There are 3 steps to the process of getting featured in the media. Logos need to be on your website and all of your marketing material so the media exposure will shoot you to the top of the search page. Newsjacking is when you take something from the news and plug it into your real estate content. Become the expert in your industry through the content and value that you provide. Christina shares a plethora of success stories from her own experience and the real estate agents that she works with. Grab the journalist's attention with the hook in your subject line; no one does this better than magazines. Google can be your secret weapon when it comes to finding the right journalist. It only takes 10 minutes per day to make all of this happen. It's going to take a long time for the world to get back to normal, so you better adapt right now. Cindy Ashton and Christina combined forces to create a visibility bundle, the Platinum PR Package, for entrepreneurs to get media exposure. Sharing your story will help you connect to people; it's the most effective form of marketing in today's world. 3 Key Points: Everyone in the country is in a constant state of scrolling when they are on their phone. You have to be able to make them stop. Being newsworthy, creating great hooks, and finding the right journalist will help agents get their spot in the media. What starts with a media connection can see exponential growth when put out on social media. This week’s episode of Good Girls Get Rich is brought to you by Uplevel Media CEO and LinkedIn expert, Karen Yankovich. In this episode, Karen shares how to improve your search results. People are searching for you, even if you don’t realize it. It’s important that you take control of the content that shows up when someone Googles your name. #GoodGirlsGetRich We want to hear your thoughts on this episode! Leave us a message on Speakpipe or email us at info@karenyankovich.com. About the Episode: It’s no secret that we Google everything. We Google businesses, restaurant and product reviews, celebrities… the list goes on. If everyone does their research before making a purchase, wouldn’t you expect people to Google your name before doing business with you? Whether you know it or not, people are Googling you. When they search for you, you don’t want your high school prom photos to pop up. You want only what’s going to help you and your business to pop up. And guess what… it’s possible to control what shows up! You need to drown out the less important information by putting more pertinent information out there. How to Improve Your Search Results Build Your LinkedIn Profile. The most effective way to improve what shows up when people Google your name is to… you guessed it… build a great LinkedIn profile. On LinkedIn, you can control exactly what you want others to know about you. The stronger your profile, the better your search results will be. Gain More Publicity (#1). You read that right… gain more publicity. You might be thinking, “Of course I want to gain more publicity, but how do I do that?” Glad you asked! For starters, check out helpareporter.com. On HARO, you have the ability to show up as the expert and write articles that pertain to your industry. Gain More Publicity (#2). What magazines and articles do your audience read? Find the articles that pertain to your industry, see who wrote them, and connect with those authors on LinkedIn. Then share, share, and share their content until you have the opportunity to write for them or be featured in one of their articles. Podcasting and Blogging. The more you podcast and blog, the more content you’ll have out there. And the more content you have out there, the better the results that show up on Google will be. But don’t stop at writing and podcasting your own content. Connect with other podcasters and bloggers and try to gain visibility on their shows and articles. (Hint: connect with these people the same way you connect with reporters in #3 by connecting with them on LinkedIn.) Improving your search results may seem like a daunting task, but if you follow these simple steps, your Google results will improve in no time. During today's episode, host Keri Shull speaks with public relations guru Christina Daves, founder of PR for Anyone. Christina shares her three-step formula for building your business by getting PR famous. After listening today, you'll have an actionable plan for how to get your story on the news in the next seven days. Episode Highlights: In 2010 Christina invented fashion accessories for medical boots. She became an expert in PR and was in 50 media outlets during her first year to promote her product. She began teaching people in real estate how to be successful in PR five years ago. The more visible you are to people, the easier it is for them to make a connection with you. In the Get PR Famous Formula, you need to be newsworthy, you need to create great hooks, and you need to find the right journalists. First, you need to create a brand. This will give you positioning and visibility. Pick one place to start with your PR plan. It could be television, but could also be newspaper, radio, or social media. Every person has a unique gift to offer the media. First, you need to be newsworthy. Remember that the media is looking for your story. If you are quoted in a major media outlet, that gives you credibility. You build your digital footprint when you are in the media. Newsjacking is when you take a story that is hot in the media and leverage your expertise to get into the media. If you're constantly pitching stories to the media they will remember you. You can affiliate yourself with a non-profit if you really believe in a cause and then tie it in with your business. Another strategy is to collaborate with people. Christina shares the example of a realtor who partnered with a builder for a massive giveaway that received a lot of attention. Celebrity sells. Know your property and know if there's any history to it. You can also use holidays and the calendar for newsjacking. Monitor social media, especially Twitter for newsjacking opportunities. Check out the history of your property to see if that may be newsworthy. You must create a great hook. Look at magazine covers to gather inspiration for hooks. You can use Google to find the right journalists. When you're in the mainstream media, you can then share that on your social media. Use your content to establish credibility so that when major media outlets check you out, you've demonstrated your expertise. If you implement Christina's strategy, you could get media attention this week. Think of one idea you could use to pitch a story to the media. Make your writing easy and accessible. That will help you with your pitch. Keri and Christina help live participants brainstorm brilliant pitch ideas. When you're thinking about stories, think about what's next. You can spend ten minutes each day pitching stories and have success. 3 Key Points: To get media attention you must be newsworthy. You can achieve this easily by newsjacking. You need a great hook to pitch a story successfully. It's easy to find the right journalists. Remember that they are looking for your unique story. Part One of ‘Publicity Opportunities during coronavirus with guest Christina Daves' During this time where we all witness the market slowly crashing, people are relying on industry leaders who are into the digital marketing space. They need guidance on how they can continue to build influence and authority online. It's just about the creativity aspect at this point. “People who want to build influence and authority online are looking for business leaders with knowledge in digital marketing.” — Tamara Thompson You need to do something and surround yourself with the same people who take their business seriously. You can help give hope to many business owners out there whose profits are starting to shrink. You need to think about getting yourself in the media and come up with topics that people can relate with. Part Two of ‘Publicity Opportunities during coronavirus with guest Christina Daves' Everybody is online. Everybody is watching TV. Everybody is doing things with their mobile devices ten times more than they were before. And they have all the time in the world to view your content. So, there are tons of opportunities for you to be seen and heard through the PR and media right now. There are many people out there wanting to learn how things in the digital space work. So, it's about helping those people that want to leverage their authority, as well as their knowledge, and provide value in different ways that they just probably haven't thought outside of the box. “Create a high-quality, engaging, value-driven, and heartwarming story that can inspire people during this time.” — Tamara Thompson There's a big silver lining here across all industries. There's a lot of bad things going on, but let's hope that something positive can come out of this. Give them some story that's high quality, engaging, value-driven and heartfelt, and something that can inspire people during this time as well. During Episode 96 of The HyperFast Agent Podcast, Christina Daves, the founder of PR for Anyone, teaches the audience at the HyperFast Sales Summit how to get PR famous. Christina shares how to use publicity to increase your visibility and increase your profit in big ways in 2020. Episode Highlights: Close your eyes and imagine it's November 2020. You have the exact number of listings and the exact number of leads. If everything is exactly the same, are you happy? The more visibility you have, the more customers you'll get. The more customers you get, the more money you're going to make. The power of publicity has changed Christina's life. If you write things down, you're more inclined to do them. Write it down and commit to doing it. Publicity is critical. Christina owned a retail store and then retired. She had a freak accident and broke her foot. She started googling fashion accessories for medical boots and couldn't find any, so she designed her own. What she didn't realize was she had created a whole new space in the marketplace and had no money to promote it. She taught herself all about publicity. The great thing about publicity is it's free. What makes you different? You have to establish a brand. There is no more powerful way to get exposed to many people than television. Podcasting is the thing right now. Think about being a guest on podcasts. There is no magic pill. Are you willing to give it ten minutes a day? Many clients have had success in less than 30 days. The three-step process begins with PR. PR is earned media. It's someone else telling the world how great you are. Be newsworthy, create great hooks, and find the right journalist. If you can provide good newsworthy story ideas, they will welcome you into their tribe. Have confidence when you pitch. Newsworthy = timely, important, interesting. Getting into media outlets will also increase your authority when someone searches for you on Google. Think about non-profits you care about. Other people who are passionate about those non-profits will also want to work with you. You relate to like-minded people when you're very involved with a charity. Ask how you can collaborate. Think about anything you can tie into a celebrity with your properties. Maybe a movie was filmed there. Know the history of your property. Use holidays, both traditional and non-traditional holidays. Monitor social media. Media begets media. You will get so much more business when you are willing to niche. One really good article could be all you need. Provide value to the end-user. The subject line needs to be a great hook. Look at hooks. Google them. Look at magazine covers. The more you practice using hooks, the better you'll get. Google is the top resource for finding the right journalist. Ask who writes about real estate for specific publications. 90% of her success is follow-up. There is no bigger megaphone than social media. Social media doesn't have to be overwhelming. PR and social media together is where the magic happens. When you pay a PR firm, they do not guarantee results. They are just pitching the media. The winners are the people who are implementing these strategies and learning how to do this. 3 Key Points: PR increases your visibility. When you are more visible, you will do more business. Provide timely, important, interesting content to become newsworthy. Focusing on PR for just ten minutes a day can make a meaningful impact. Christina Daves It all started in 2010 when I broke my foot the day before I was going to New York City, Fashion Capital of the World. The doctor put me in one of those big, black, awful medical boots. I searched for anything to make it fashionable. The experience motivated me to design fashion accessories to make them look better. This resulted in the immensely popular CastMedic Designs which won Steve Harvey's Top Inventor honors on his Emmy® Award winning show and have been worn by celebrities including Diana Ross. How to Get Your Message to the Masses with Christina Daves “More people are afraid of what people will think of them if they say ‘no’. So most people say ‘yes’. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.” Christina Daves (24:52-25:17) Getting your message to the masses can be one of the biggest challenges for today’s entrepreneurs. But we all have stories, ideas, services, and products we want to share with the world. The better we are at getting our message in front of the right people, the more likely we are to make a lasting impact on others. Christina Daves is an expert at reaching the masses. Her bestselling book PR for Anyone shares over a hundred affordable strategies for creating a buzz about your business. Without having the advertising resources most other businesses have at their disposal, Christina taught herself everything she knows about generating publicity. She’s appeared in more than 1,000 local and national media outlets. Christina and her clients have been able to achieve a combined 873 million views and more than eight figures in revenue from her publicity-generating strategies. “We don't know what we don't know. We just try. That’s our education… you get in there and you do.” - Diane Forster (9:12-9:19) Following Christina’s three-step process for reaching the masses can be your starting point for growing a successful business. Step 1: Be Newsworthy If you want to get visibility for your business, you need to make sure that people have a reason for sharing your message. This means identifying the things that make your business unique. How can you set yourself apart from your competitors? What makes the value of your product or service worth talking about? Step 2: Create Great Hooks and Subject Lines There’s an endless number of people looking to reach the masses with their stories and ideas. So you need to create great hooks when reaching out to media outlets. Consider the most interesting and noteworthy aspects of your business. How can you summarize them into a concise and easy-to-understand message that hooks reporters and their audiences? Step 3: Find the Right Journalist Be selective about who you contact for media coverage. Do your research to find media outlets that share stories about businesses like yours. Think outside the box when looking for media coverage. Make sure you know who the end-user is, and find the platform that has a similar audience to the one you serve. When you do your homework, you’ll get maximum results from your efforts instead of wasting time and energy on media outlets that aren’t the right fit. Which Media Platform Should You Go After? Knowing who your audience is lets you identify the media outlets that will best meet your needs. Don’t just try to approach every TV or radio station in your local area. Each media outlet has a demographic they cater to. Match your target audience with the demographics of local media outlets in order to create a more effective public relations campaign. Target your story to the right demographic. “Don’t just throw spaghetti on the wall. Do your homework. That's where you get the best results.” - Christina Daves (17:26-17:31) Personalize your pitch to each media outlet. Mass mailings may reach more journalists and producers, but they won’t have the personalization that makes you stand out from the crowd. Know who you’re contacting and customize your message to the person. Eventually, you’ll find one media outlet that’s the perfect match for your business. Get used to asking for what you want. Too many people are worried about rejection and hearing the word “no”. But hearing “no” is the worst thing that can happen. So there’s never a reason to not ask. Don’t be afraid to put your gifts out there for the world. When you share the value of your services with the masses, the impact you make on the world grows as you build a thriving and profitable business. PR, or public relations, is something so many people want for their businesses but most have no clue how to get. The old adage of any press is good press doesn't really fly in this day and age. Just look at all the social media postings when airlines do something bad. That is NOT a good thing for their brand. So how does the average person get PR that moves the needle forward on the dial of their business success? My guest built her brand into a powerhouse and wrote a book about how you can do it too. She also coaches others and has some done for you products. But what she really does is show you how all it really takes to get positive, needle moving PR is just a few simple and consistent steps. Christina Daves shares a three part formula and has a free 10 day challenge you can take that will get you started right away on getting PR for your business. Christina Daves is a serial entrepreneur who has founded and run five successful companies over the past 20 years. With no resources remaining when she launched her latest venture, CastMedic Designs, Christina taught herself everything she could about generating her own publicity, which basically provided her free advertising for her business. Since launching in 2012, she has appeared in close to 1000 media outlets including national and local television and publications. As a result of this success, she launched PR for Anyone® to help other small business owners have similar success. Together with her clients, Christina has generated over 8 figures in sales from free publicity. Even with a circulation of 30,000 you can get a lot of exposure and use it as a way to establish yourself as an expert. Without a hook, a journalist won’t open your email The hook is very important to getting a journalist to look at your story. The best examples of great hooks are magazine covers because they instantly spark interest and draw the reader in. This is not a one-time strategy Pitching to the media is a long-term play, not a one-and-done thing. Sometimes you won’t hear back from them; not because your pitch is bad, but because they are busy, and the story might not be what they need right now. You have to consistently stay in front of people. Try sending different stories as well. If you look at public relations as a long-term play to build relationships with the media, it will serve you well. Just taking 10 minutes out of your day can massively benefit your business. If you’re a valuable resource, the media will welcome you to their tribe. When other people see you as a rockstar, and it makes you that much more attractive to local clients. Inventor and PR For Anyone Founder Christina Daves puts on the “Advice Wings” to share her tips on how to play the “pinball” game of entrepreneurship, from staying true to your passion to “me time” – and what’s inspiring her right now.
Christina’s success has come from her belief that no dream is too extraordinary to accomplish as long as it is met with an extraordinary effort. She has built a career through strategic thinking, willpower, and – most importantly – not being afraid of a “no” when faced with a challenge. This determination has resulted in building six successful companies, becoming an award-winning inventor, and a best selling author – a seamless example of her problem-solving tendencies, ability to gauge market demand, and personal willpower. When she launched CastMedic Designs, Christina had no publicity budget, taught herself the ins and outs of PR and in less than a year appeared in over 50 media outlets (including national television and magazines) by figuring out a precise formula the media responded to and repeating it for continued success. To date, she has been featured in over 250 media outlets including the Steve Harvey Show and TODAY. Upon launching PR for Anyone® to help small business owners, entrepreneurs, authors and professionals from multiple industry sectors learn how to easily and effectively generate their own publicity. Working with clients, PR for Anyone has generated well over 7 figures in sales from free publicity. These profitable strategies and experiences inspired Christina t write a bestselling book, PR for Anyone™ 100+ Affordable Ways To Easily Create Buzz for Your Business, providing over 100 tips to gain free media exposure. www.prforanyone.com www. http://socialmediaandpr.com The Inventors Launchpad – Roadmap to Success Series is presented by Inventors Launchpad in beautiful Tampa Bay, FL and hosted by Carmine Denisco. If you don’t know where to find these people, Google your subject matter and see who’s talking about your industry. The easiest way to start building that relationship is social media. Create a story that’s entertaining to their audience, do a short and sweet pitch. To get on the major televisions, you have to have a local experience. When it comes to being efficient, the most important thing is to know when you’re most effective at your work and plan your day around that. Christina warns business owners of the common mistakes in the PR, such as pitching the wrong person, pitching about themselves versus making it something that’s beneficial to the audience. The most important thing is to make your story something that can benefit the journalist’s audience.
