In this episode Andrea shares: That even before she made the leap in to entrepreneurship her clients were almost begging her to start her own firm to better serve them.   What she does as a PR Manager to help her clients increase their media exposure.   The unfortunate event that happened in the previous agency that she worked for and how it propelled her to start her own firm.   How her biggest mistake centered around a form that she thought needed to be more complicated than it was and how that initially turned off prospective clients.   How she views society as a whole regarding consuming content and what that means for us entrepreneurs.   What she means when she describes herself as a 'P.I. for P.R.'   How she initially defined her customer avatar and why it does not include huge firms.   Why having a Public Relations firm represent you instantly makes your business appear to be bigger.   The mistakes that she sees firms make when it comes to Public Relations and how she helps them correct it.   How a business should prepare to move forward when they engage a Public Relations firm.   That she represents a wide range of clients including authors and inventors.  In fact, Andrea is on the board of The United Inventors Association of America!   How she was an early adopter of working remotely.   That good things can come out of bad publicity and how she has helped other s before do just that.

Steve's a regular with Hoda & Jenna on NBC's Today Show. I tried to play Steve's new game with him live on my show and tried to guess what various products were after looking at some photos and asking yes/no questions that would give me clues. I still had no clue.  The game is much better played on 'You Tube' where during each episode of  “WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?”, panelists are shown a “mystery gadget" which is a new product—but it's function is not known by the general public or the panelists. With the host's help, panelists ask Yes/No questions to try to guess the identity and function of the mystery gadget. It's an awesome way for inventors to get a product some exposure. Matt Nuccio is the President of Design Edge, Inc., a toy and game development company, and a licensing agency whose clients include Mattel, Hasbro, Spin Master, and Fisher-Price to name only a few.  This week he joins me to discuss the evolution of his career within the toy industry.  Our conversation includes a discussion about how to be authentic within your chosen industry and harness the value you bring to the table. For Matt, he is both a business owner and an idea guy.  He brings amazing toy ideas to life and commercializes them on behalf of huge organizations. So, as you listen, think about how you might want to get credit for your knowledge. We also talked about this notion of competing with the big guys versus staying true to yourself and embracing your identity. And finally, Matt talked about how every idea should be a solution to a problem that someone is looking to be fixed.   For 4 years, Matt co-chaired the Toy Association (TA), on their associate panel, representing all designers and inventors within the toy industry. Currently, Matt sits on the board of directors of the United Inventors Association of America (UIA), a non-profit organization working to educate and advocate for all types of inventors. He also sits on the Chicago Toy and Game Fair (ChiTAG) advisory board and Toy Association’s Creative Factor advisory board helping start-up inventors to navigate successfully within the Toy Industry.   Matt writes a column in Toy Family Entertainment magazine focusing on the industry. He has also lectured at ChiTAG, New York Toy Fair, ASTRA, Hong Kong Toy Fair, and various inventor clubs around the world including the 2019 Emerging Innovation Summit in Melbourne Australia. Design Edge's products have been nominated for, and have also won, many industry awards such as TOTY (Toy Of The Year), TAGIE (Toy and Games Innovators), Games 100, Origin, and Family Fun among others. In 2019, Matt was honored by the National Security Agency (NSA) as an American Innovator and was recently listed for the second year in a row, by Mojo Nation, as one of the top 100 most influential people in the toy industry today. Highlights: The design-conscious is about not being fully satisfied with your work. (7:40) The beginning of Design Edge Inc., a toy business family. (8:30) The value of knowing about mechanical techniques even for designers who use modern design software. (10:17) Why is experiencing the evolution of the toy industry (or any other industry) is of value to clients or employers – or the evolution of the toy industry – from toy businessmen. (11:24) Santa Claus the movie from 1985 was based on the old school toy industry. (15:00) Designers vs. sales; and why designers hold their keep. (19:13) Is art school a waste of time? (20:00) Leveraging being a family business versus changing its culture to be more corporate. (24:00) I ask Mark, “What one piece of your business is the highlight of your day?” (27:51) Toys is a fashion-based business; fashion and toys – similarities are plenty! (28:06) What runs through Mark’s mind when a toy he designed does not make it? (30:00) What a toy idea MUST have. (31:38) The impact of the internet on retail in the toy industry. (32:40) Start-ups can benefit from the low barrier to entry. (34:04) Puzzles as the game comeback story of this pandemic. (35:00) The trick to a good board game is that there are clear instructions. (38:38) How true to life was the movie Big with Tom Hanks? It reflects the evolution of the industry. (39:45) Matt’s best advice for anyone with a toy idea: understand the difference between a toy and a solution. Brian Fried is a serial inventor, with many of his inventions reaching audiences through mass retail, infomercials, home shopping channels, catalogs, and online retailers through licensing and manufacturing. He is the author of Inventing Secrets Revealed and You & Your Big Ideas and has been featured in media outlets like The New York Times Magazine, Newsday, CBS News, Food Network, and WPIX-11. Brian hosted Got Invention Radio, conducting over 150 interviews and interviewing high-profile guests including the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, and Lori Greiner from ABC's Shark Tank. Brian mentors and represents individual inventors and celebrities at all stages of the invention process, providing feedback, product development, licensing representation, and turnkey solutions to make ideas a reality. He is considered an authority and advocate for inventors within the invention community and is requested as a guest speaker on innovation and invention at major trade shows, government agencies, schools, and libraries. Brian is also the Founder and Chief Invention Officer at Inventor Smart, an Inventor Liaison at Licensing International, and Executive Director at the United Inventors Association of America. When looking to invent something, it is important to put things into perspective and have the right expectations. Many times, inventors become emotionally attached to their inventions, especially the first one, and believe that nothing will get in the way of their quest for success. However, inventors should be aware that every invention doesn't have to be a home run. It is necessary for them to step back, think critically, and make good business decisions. They also need to separate their emotions from business decisions; that way, they will make the best decisions for their inventions. Brian Fried, Founder of Inventor Smart and an inventor, is Rich Goldstein's guest in this week's episode of Innovations and Breakthroughs. Brian talks about inventing products from a business perspective, the steps inventors should take in researching patents, and licensing and manufacturing. They’ll also touch on product design and development. Keep listening.

http://www.LloydMarketingGroup.com Lisa Lloyd is a highly successful entrepreneur, inventor, and patent holder who has licensed each of her seven patents. Her products can be found in stores globally licensed by brands like Scunci®, Vidal Sassoon®, Goody® and Suave®. She also has a long history of helping inventors bring their products to market. After the success of her first licensed product, a hair accessory called the French Twister, Lisa cofounded the Inventors Association of Arizona with her mother, which is still thriving today! Due to her organization's success, she was invited to share her secrets with the United Inventors Association and also became its president. Stephen interviews Lisa about her experience licensing her ideas for products, including how easy it was to get into companies looking for ideas. Lisa explains how she got in touch with companies looking for ideas (this was before the Internet) and that these companies treated her well. Over the years, Lisa has been very successful at getting national media attention for her products, including getting on Dr. Phil, the Big Idea with Donny Deutsch show, and the first season of ABC's Shark Tank, where she received three offers. Stephen has known Lisa for 25 years and brought her on inventRightTV to discuss how to invent. Even professional inventors struggle to answer this question! What's the process? How do you do it? Lisa has been researching the best practices of innovation and inventing, learning as much as she can about how leading innovators innovate and ideate. She's taken what she's learned from Fortune 500 companies and brought it to the level of the independent inventor, so they can use the same principles. Lisa explains that the reason why companies are not licensing more products is because the ideas they receive are not solutions to problems that will sell. If your solution is not dramatically better enough, it won't net profit for the company. That's the only way to get consumers to switch to something new. You know you've hit it when you get a "Wow!" The owner of Design Edge Matt Nuccio has toys in his blood. A 2nd generation toy guy, he grew up in the business and has massive experience at all levels of the industry. He is a member of the Creative Factor Advisory Board for the Toy Association and a member of the board for ChiTAG. I bring Matt to the mic today to discuss his efforts to more closely include designers, inventors and sales reps into the Toy Association. He has also worked closely with the United Inventors Association and we discuss current weaknesses of US patent law. Do you always need a patent for your toy invention? How do we show an invention and get feedback while also protecting our ideas? Later in the show we get pragmatic and discuss how to learn from having your concept rejected and use it to adjust your course and fuel your fire. This conversation is a great balance of entertainment and education. Enjoy!
