Is There Any Hope for Revitalizing Mainline Churches?

The long, slow death of mainline churches is well documented and goes back to the 1970s. In the mid-twentieth century, approximately half of all Americans were identified as members of one of the seven mainline denominations. Today, it's between 10% and 15%. Not much is said about revitalizing these churches, but there is hope. Josh and Sam interview one mainline Methodist elder, Chad Brooks, who has a plan to solve this problem. Character traits, hard work, seriousness, love and care, integrity, faithfulness, fruit of the Spirit. • 2Ti 3:10 Time, official and unofficial: • Luk 5:27 After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, "Follow Me." 28 So he left all, rose up, and followed Him. Answer questions, prep for presentation of studies, critique of study after the study  Time spent talking about the bible, principles, life principles  Time in social situations modeling character as a whole  Pray with  Find or create opportunities to practice teaching • Rom 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. • 2Ti 1:6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. Have a Saturday practice or a periodic meeting to practice with peers  Encourage use by other ministries for giving devotion prior to service  Use them in Home Groups  Allow them to give announcements  Use them at special events, men's, youth, outreaches etc.  Have them give devotions on a mission trip or Israel trip, etc.  When you believe they are ready, allow them to teach from the pulpit, Wednesdays and then possibly Sunday.  Always provide help before and critique after.  Be honest and always be positive but honest Pro 15:23 A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, And a word spoken in due season, how good it is!  Pro 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver. 12 Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold Is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear.  Pro 27:5 Open rebuke is better Than love carefully concealed.  Pro 27:6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.  Eph 4:25 Therefore, putting away lying, "LET EACH ONE OF YOU SPEAK TRUTH WITH HIS NEIGHBOR," for we are members of one another.  Eph 4:29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.  Modeling, Instruction, Time, Access, Opportunity As Senior Pastor since 1997 Rod Carver graduated from CCU in Biblical Studies with a focus on leadership. He is joined by Rev. Chad Brooks, a pastor in the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church and based in Alexandria, Louisiana. Rossnagel and Brooks discuss the theology of Wilco's amazing song, "A Shot in the Arm," and specifically a moment in the song at one particular concert in Mississippi. The conversation explores the themes of faith, hope, and redemption in Wilco's music, and how these themes can be relevant to people of all faiths. As Brooks shares, every single time when we want things to change, we realize that the change is already inside of us. And as Rossnagel shares, the line, "What you once were isn't what you want to be any more," is our call to continually seek transformation. In this episode, the Ben interviews Chad Brooks (Writing and Podcasts Linked Here) about the growing myth of church size and the struggles that many churches face in finding their identity in a post-COVID world. Chad, a pastor and church consultant, shares his insights and experiences on how churches can overcome these challenges and find new ways to do ministry in a rapidly changing world. Chad challenges the common assumption that bigger is always better when it comes to churches. He suggests that church size can be a myth that distracts churches from focusing on their core mission and identity. Instead, he encourages churches to embrace their unique strengths and identities, whether they are large or small. Ben and Chad also discuss Chad's ongoing research on how churches are changing in size, scope of ministry, and how they function as a whole. He highlights the importance of churches staying true to their core values and mission while also being open to new ideas and approaches. Finally, the Chad offers some practical suggestions for how churches can do ministry in new and innovative ways and how annual conferences can accommodate these new approaches. Overall, this episode offers a thought-provoking discussion on the challenges and opportunities that churches face in today's world. It provides valuable insights and practical advice for churches seeking to find their identity and make a positive impact in their communities. Chad's Twitter Here: RevChadBrooks

Jeremy Writebol speaks about his earliest sermon at a nursing home and the path that led him from there into the Lead Campus Pastor at Woodside Bible Church - Plymouth, Michigan and Executive Director at Gospel Centered Discipleship. They speak about the unique dynamics of pastoring at a multi-site church, sharing an outline with 13 other preachers, but responsibly and specifically creating localized sermons for each context. Jeremy and Mike speak about the advantages of sermon preparation in collaboration with other pastors, and the unique opportunities that the Christian calendar affords to prepare together for Easter, Christmas and Pentecost messages or series as an expression of gospel harmony. In his latest book, Pastor, Jesus Is Enough, Jeremy invites fellow pastors to hear the words of the risen Jesus in the seven letters within Revelation 2–3. The exhortations in Revelation 2–3 are directed to churches. But they also exhort pastors. In these seven letters, Jesus draws near to pastors—whether hurting or straying—and reminds them of his sufficiency. In these warnings and promises, Jesus has hard words for pastors. But they are words of life. Most of all, Jesus urges pastors to keep their focus on Him.Jeremy gives advice on preaching through the messages from Jesus in Revelation 2-3, and reminds us of the pastoral implications of this section - both to our own hearts and the hearts of our congregations. New Things - Chad Brooks

It's the time of the year to talk about all of the new things. Plans, words, dreams, lists, resolutions...all of the things. But how many of these things end up being truly new? Ask anyone in the fitness industry when their gym begins to normalize towards the end of the month. But what are the real and true things we find in life? And when is the right time to actually find a way for things to be truly new? What if we are in the beginning of the year where we really need things to change? We need new things. A new way of doings things, a new outlook on life. A new explanation for this complicated thing we call life. Scripture calls this a "new song" and it shows up in countless places throughout the prayerbook of scripture called Psalms. And don't doubt it for a moment, Psalms is about the absolute real human time colliding with the holy time of God. NT Wright calls it an "invitation to stand at the intersection of the different layers of time." I waited patiently for the Lord to help me,     and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair,     out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground     and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing,     a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed.     They will put their trust in the Lord. Oh, the joys of those who trust the Lord,     who have no confidence in the proud     or in those who worship idols. O Lord my God, you have performed many wonders for us.     Your plans for us are too numerous to list.     You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds,     I would never come to the end of them. Psalms 40:1-5 NLT It's this patience waiting that turns into something. This relief we need, this vision, the stability and firm foundation we need for a new year. It's about creating an internal patience that lasts longer than the 12 days it takes for a New Years Resolution to fail.   See you in worship. We will be celebrating Communion together and beginning our new year with Wesley's Covenant Prayer.
