The SSPX Podcast is produced by Angelus Press, which has as its mission the fortification of traditional Catholics so that they can defend the Faith, and reaching out to those who have not yet found Tradition. What is the SSPX? The main goal of the Society of Saint Pius X is to preserve the Catholic Faith in its fullness and purity, to teach its truths, and to diffuse its virtues, especially through the Roman Catholic priesthood. Authentic spiritual life, the sacraments, and the traditional liturgy are its primary means of bringing this life of grace to souls. Although the traditional Latin Mass is the most visible and public expression of the work of the Society, we are committed to defending Catholic Tradition in its entirety: all of Catholic doctrine and morals as the Church has always defended them. What people need is the Catholic Faith, without compromise, with all the truth and beauty which accompanies it. https://sspx.org

In this episode, Father Despósito continues his commentary on Royo Marín's Theology of Christian Perfection. Today's topic is the struggle against the world and the flesh. Advice is given to those who live habitually in mortal sin; the effects of venial sin are explained. What should our conduct be before, during, and after temptation by the devil? This week, we piggyback off of our last episode and dive deeper into the subject of success. We'll talk about how the world defines success, grappling with those conventional metrics working in ministry (including when organizations seemingly fail to meet those benchmarks), and how God's presence can often defy how we determine success. Also, we learn to no one's surprise that Lindsay was basically a perfect child when she was growing up.

In this episode, Part III: Negative Aspect of the Christian Life begins in Royo Marín's Theology of Christian Perfection with Stages of the Christian Life. The three principal classifications which have been proposed in the history of Christian spirituality are the classic division into the three ways (purgative, illuminative and unitive), that of the three degrees (beginners, proficient and perfect), and that of St. Teresa of Avila as outlined in her Interior Castle. We shall bend these three classifications in order to construct the following schema of the entire Christian life. Join Father Nicolás Despósito and host Father Germán Fliess, seminary professors at Most Holy Trinity Seminary in Brooksville, Florida in this episode of Catholic Spirituality.
The next chapter in Royo Marín's Theology of Christian Perfection is on Models of Perfection. Jesus Christ is the only way. No one can go to the Father except through Him, for there has been given to us no other name under heaven by which we can be saved. Mary is, in a word, the shortest and most secure path to Christ. God has wished that Mary should be so intimately associated with the divine plan of redemption and sanctification that they cannot be attained without her. Consequently, this is not merely a question of another devotion, but Mary has a basic and necessary role to play in the Christian life. Join Father Nicolás Despósito and host Father Germán Fliess, seminary professors at Most Holy Trinity Seminary in Brooksville, Florida in this episode of Catholic Spirituality.
This episode continues with Royo Marín's Theology of Christian Perfection on Mysticism and Christian Perfection. "The essential constitutive of mysticism is the actuation of the gifts of the Holy Ghost in the divine or superhuman manner which ordinarily produces a passive experience of God or of His divine activity in the soul." Mysticism enters into the normal development of sanctifying grace. Join Father Nicolás Despósito and host Father Germán Fliess, seminary professors at Most Holy Trinity Seminary in Brooksville, Florida in this episode of Catholic
In this episode, we continue with the chapter, Christian Perfection, in Royo Marín's Theology of Christian Perfection. All Christians are obliged to aspire to Christian perfection. We say all Christians in order to signify that the obligation to aspire to perfection is not restricted to priests and religious. "Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect." Matthew 5:48 "But according to him that hath called you, who is holy, be you also in all manner of conversation holy: Because it is written: You shall be holy, for I am holy." 1 Peter 1:15–16 Join Father Nicolás Despósito and host Father Germán Fliess, seminary professors at Most Holy Trinity Seminary in Brooksville, Florida in this episode of Catholic Spirituality. Unseen warfare is the path of all Christians, it is the Cross we must take up, and it is how we enter the arena of combat for perfection. Every aspect of life is an opportunity for attaining perfection—walking down the street, driving, eating, etc. Thus, the unseen warfare is everywhere—we either take steps towards Christ or steps away from Him. Life is not spiritually stagnant. Some notes taken from: https://www.unseenwarfare.netSupport the show
Reverend Chad Brooks speaks with Mike Neglia about lessons learned regarding preaching during lockdown, and the changes that he sees between traditional sermon preaching and livestream/YouTube content. He also speaks about the distinction between “doing more things” actually doing things well, hustle culture, true pastoral productivity that focuses on health and fruitfulness instead of cranking out material. Tonight we resumed our reading of Step One on the Renunciation of the world. The step fits into the larger context of a break with the world which includes, John tells us, detachment and exile. Here is where monks sought to remove everything from their lives that would keep them from focusing solely upon God and what He alone offers. As Christians we may not imitate the monk in living in the desert; yet, in reality, the desert exists within the human heart. The renunciation that John speaks of in this first step must exist within us as well. There are many ways that we have to let go of the things that hold us within their grip; the passions (sins that have become habitual), disordered desires that make us long for satisfaction and seek it within worldly goods and the fulfillment of the appetites. In paragraph 4, John begins to define for us the various types of Christians. He does this not as an abstraction but rather as a frame through which we can view our lives. He paints with broad strokes and asks us to gaze deeply into the image to see if we recognize a reflection of ourselves. Are we an irreligious man (not thinking of God at all), a transgressor who distorts the faith in a depraved fashion? Are we a Christian who seeks to imitate Christ in word, thought, and deed - who believes in what God has revealed of himself to us; namely, believing in the Holy Trinity? Are we the lover of God who seeks to live in communion with all that is natural and sinless? Are we the continent man, who in the face of temptations and turmoil, struggles in order that he might be free? Have we interiorized monasticism in the sense that we seek a chaste love, purity of heart and mind? Do we remember death so as to cling to He alone who is our life? Have we set aside the things of this world voluntarily; not because they are evil but because we are a naturally attached to them more than we are attached to the love of God? --- Text of chat during the group: 00:34:39 Anthony: We are tied to an evolutionary metaphysic - to our detriment. 00:35:13 Anthony: "We" being society, even Christian society adopt evolutionary "becoming' 00:36:54 Eric Williams: I think Thomas à Kempis made a good effort to remind Western scholastics of the bigger picture. 00:38:18 Ambrose Little: Some people are more intellectually inclined, and God can use that to draw people to himself. 00:39:20 Joseph Caro: good point Ambrose! We will despise one 01:18:37 Mitchell Hunt: Thank you Ren 01:18:40 Eric Williams: Material comforts are like agglomerations attached to us. As they increase in number, they add to our “mass”, and as mass increases so does gravitational attraction. The more things we amass, the more we draw toward ourselves. With a little more thought one might find an interesting metaphor to be made from the accumulation of accretions becoming so great that a black hole is formed. 01:20:17 Anthony: God is the "Philanthropic One." Beautiful title. 01:22:45 Sean McCune: Eric: We become a nothingness that pulls everything in our grasp to ourselves where they are also become nothingness. 01:25:09 Sean McCune: (It took your comment about material things to get this secular Franciscan to say something)
Can we become sinless in our lifetimes? Some devoted followers of Jesus believe that Christians can reach a point in their spiritual maturity where they no longer sin. Imagine it! No longer struggling with negative internal thoughts like anger or hate. No longer wrestling with the inner tensions that tempt us to walk a path other than the one God has laid out for His followers. Sinless perfection, or Christian perfection as believers in this position prefer to call it, sounds amazing! But is it really possible? No matter how wonderful it sounds, is it even attainable? Many respected heroes of our Faith continued to struggle with sin throughout their lives and were looking forward to the day when Jesus would rescue them from "this body of death." Think the Apostle Paul in Romans 7. While sinless perfection sounds fantastic, this position rests on a very anemic definition of what sin and sinlessness actually are. In this episode of The Rugged Truth Podcast, we will explore this idea and answer this question in a way that will leave us informed and encouraged. Join the conversation now! One of the questions we often get here at the podcast is, "How would you preach Wesley's sermons in a 21st-century church?" In this episode, Bob Kaylor demonstrates how a sermon like "Christian Perfection" can be used to bring some of Methodism's distinctive doctrines to new generations. Think of it as a throwback to the way that Wesley's original circuit riders used the sermons as a "seminary in a saddlebag" for fueling their preaching in fields and preaching houses across the British Isles and the American frontier. "There is scarce any expression in Holy Writ which has given more offense than this...And whosoever 'preaches perfection,' [and] asserts that it is attainable in this life, run great hazard of being accounted by them worse than a heathen or a publican." These opening lines to John Wesley's sermon indicate that Christian Perfection is a widely misunderstood doctrine, even though it is at the heart of the Scriptures. Understanding what this term means is essential to understanding the key emphasis in Methodism. In this episode, Bob Kaylor unpacks Wesley's explanation of "perfection" and how it is audaciously optimistic about what the grace of God can do in the life of the believer. The ultimate goal of this process is union with God characterized by pure love of God and other people…”Becoming all that God wants you to be - Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:48)Perfect in loveHow is the different form human perfection? IT DOES NOT = without fault or sin Perfect (Greek) = full, mature, complete Is it possible to achieve Christian Perfection? Because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. (Hebrews 10:27)Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.' (Matthew 22:37) How do we achieve Christian Perfection? LOVE GOD, LOVE OTHERS.

In this special extra-quick episode, we talk about a concept that is as central to Christianity as it is contested: holiness. What does it mean to be holy? How do we become holy? And, a big one...can we drink whiskey and still be holy?? We hope the answer is yes, because we also review two great whiskies, one from Islay (Scotland) and the other from Kentucky. Both are strong in proof and flavor. From this episode: Drew's Knob Creek 100 here. Evan's Laphroiag here. Excerpt from C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity here.
