In this episode, Brian Brodersen joins us to share insights from decades of pastoral ministry, biblical exposition, and spiritual discernment. Now serving as pastor emeritus of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, Brian reflects on his transition out of the lead pastor role, and his current ministry leading a Sunday night Bible study through the New Testament - currently in the Book of Acts. This intentional, accessible overview of the New Testament continues to build up believers and equip the next generation with solid biblical foundations. The heart of our conversation focuses on the nation of Israel, biblical prophecy, and current events. Drawing from a dispensational framework without lapsing into speculation, Brian offers careful guidance for preachers navigating one of the most charged and misunderstood topics in Christian ministry today. Whether you're teaching through Ezekiel 38–39, responding to the news cycle, or wondering how to speak about Jerusalem from the pulpit, this episode will offer clarity, conviction, and a call to faithfulness. In the final section, Brian turns our attention to the spiritual realities behind gospel ministry. Drawing on themes from his book The Powers of Darkness & the People of God, he reminds us that the preacher is always a target for satanic opposition. This sobering yet hope-filled word will encourage pastors and Bible teachers to persevere in the face of unseen resistance.Guest Bio – Brian Brodersen:Brian Brodersen is pastor emeritus of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, where he served as senior pastor from 1993 to 2023. What if the key to unlocking your preaching voice lies not in mimicking others, but in embracing the unique way God has shaped you—through your experiences, challenges, and divine calling? In this episode, recorded during the final session of the Reliance Church in August 2023, Mike Neglia reflects on the unique journey every preacher undertakes in finding their authentic preaching voice. Starting with the humorous challenges he faces as having an unexpected accent, Mike explores how "your voice" in preaching is not just about accent or regional dialect, but the genuine expression of who you are—shaped by both human experience and divine calling. Mike shares personal insights into the development of a preacher's voice, noting how imitation is a natural and essential part of the process, but warns against getting stuck in mere imitation. Drawing from his own life experiences and struggles, including being a parent to a special needs teenager, he highlights how preachers can discover their "sovereign themes"—those deep, personal truths God has worked into their lives, which resonate with authority and impact when shared from the pulpit. This conversation offers practical advice for preachers to reflect on their unique contributions, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and the grace of God in overcoming feelings of inadequacy. Pastor Mike encourages listeners to embrace their God-given voice, sharing how the themes of grace, shame, and the patient love of God have shaped his ministry and teaching. Tune in to hear more about the process of discovering your preaching voice, the balance between human influence and divine guidance, and how to avoid the pitfalls of imitation. "Preaching is the communicating of divine truth through human personality." – Phillips Brooks Key Takeaways: Finding your preaching voice is a journey from imitation to authenticity. Your voice is shaped by both personal experiences and divine calling. Sovereign themes—deep truths God has worked in you—carry unique authority in your preaching. Imitation is a natural part of the learning process but must lead to the discovery of your authentic self. "We discover our voice through a process that starts with imitation and ends with confidence and a distinct, unique, unrepeatable gift of your authentic self." Mike Neglia and Brian Brodersen discuss the practical and spiritual aspects of sermon preparation. They kick off this workshop (recorded at the 2024 CGN International Conference) by speaking about the time commitment that is needed to prepare a sermon, and then talk about the following 7 steps: Selecting a Passage: For many Calvary Chapel pastors, the text is simply the next chapter, but it's not always that straightforward. Brian shares how he approaches determining the right passage length and selecting the next sermon series, while leaving room for the Spirit's guidance. Meditating on the Text: How do you go from reading the passage to truly internalizing it? Brian talks about "marinating" in Scripture—letting it sink in, both mentally and spiritually. Crafting an Outline: A good sermon should lead your congregation on a journey, with each point helping them take a step closer to the main message. Brian emphasizes that the sermon should have a clear focus, guiding listeners from biblical history into personal application. Using Commentaries: Commentaries can be a great resource, but Brian cautions not to rely on them too quickly. They should act as consultants, not the first stop in preparation. Preaching the Gospel from Every Passage: Faithful Bible teaching must consistently point to Jesus as the ultimate Hero of the story. Collaborating with Others: Preaching is a solo endeavour, but it is also a community effort, and Brian and Mike discuss (and disagree!) about the importance of involving other church leaders, creative teams, and even new tools like ChatGPT to refine and communicate sermon ideas effectively. Prayer in Preparation: One of the most crucial parts of sermon prep is knowing when to stop studying and start praying. Ray Ortlund speaks with Mike about his Sunday morning routine, that consists of prayer and “major surgery” on his sermon manuscript, as well as an explanation of what his new post as a Canon Theologian and Catechist actually entails. The majority of the conversation is spent speaking about the power of the gospel to overcome hidden shame and lead people into the glorious freedom of the grace of Christ. Ray's latest book “The Death of Porn : Men of Integrity Building a World of Nobility” is published by Crossway and is available everywhere. Pornography may seem inescapable, but God can free us from its destructive power. The gospel replaces the dehumanizing lies of pornography with this surprising truth: God created us as royalty. How then can we reclaim our God-given identity to take a stand against—and ultimately starve—the predatory porn industry? At the conclusion of the interview Ray gives advice on how to reach 71 years old and not just remain faithful to Christ, but flourishing in relationship with Him and loving Him more than ever. Ray Ortlund is the President of Renewal Ministries, the Pastor to Pastors at Immanuel Church Nashville, and a Canon Theologian with the Anglican Church in North America. Brian Brodersen believes that preaching is not an end in and of itself, rather, it is a means to the greater end of knowing, loving, worshipping and serving God. Biblical Preaching (preaching the way it is defined and modeled in the Bible) is God's word, spoken by God's servants, through God's Spirit, in God's power. How to Assure We are Preaching in the Power of the SpiritA disposition, a bent, a leaning. An attitude of dependence on the Holy Spirit. A constant awareness of our own weakness: “I was with you in weakness, in fear and in much trembling.” “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God.” Preach the Word! There will be many temptations along the way to move from preaching the Word to preaching something else: politics, nationalism, social justice, prosperity, personal success and happiness, and the list goes on. People will often find a biblical text from which to springboard into their pet doctrine. This is not preaching the Word and the Holy Spirit will not honor such preaching with His power. There might very well be the power of persuasion, personality, passion, articulation, perspiration etc. but it won't be the power of the Spirit. The Spirit honors the preaching of the Word—taking the biblical text and bringing out its meaning for all to see, understand and apply. The Process of Preparing to Preach-a. Consciousness of the supernatural element.b. Pray for the Lord's leading on what to preach.c. Seek the Lord's assistance even in the preparation of your message. III. Preaching-Take that same dependency you've had through the whole process into the pulpit with you.Remember that you are the mouthpiece of God to bring His word to His people. “If anyone speaks, let them speak as the oracle of God.” 1Pet 4:11Be open to going off script, don't be afraid to go to places you hadn't prepared to go. The Spirit will often send us off on diversions but will also get us back on the main road. Be cautiously spontaneous. You'll find over time those spontaneous diversions are more often than not prophetic words that go straight to the heart of the hearers who then receive the Word, not as a human word, but as it is in truth the Word of God that works effectively in those who believe. “You can have knowledge, and you can be meticulous in your preparation; but without the unction of the Holy Spirit you will have no power, and your preaching will not be effective.” - Martyn Lloyd-Jones “The gospel's force lies beyond the power of the preacher. Paul Leboutillier, John Whittaker, Brian Brodersen & Nick Cady answer questions from the participants at our most recent in-person training event in Boise, Idaho. They give their thoughts on how to assess the tone and "vibe" of a church that you are invited to speak at, what commentaries that every preacher should own, what commentaries are specifically suited for particular books of the Bible, and what to do when you are simply starting at a blank Word Document and can't think of what to write, or what to say about a certain passage of scripture. Teach them how to listen, teach them how to read, and discuss with them what they are learning.Be willing to take risks with them.Correct when correction is necessary and encourage when encouragement is needed.Don't attach your identity and worth to their success and failures but show them what a true understanding of your identity and worth in Christ looks like.Be thankful and present when you have them and be thankful and hopeful when God takes them to other places and other people.Join our private Facebook group to continue the conversation: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ExpositorsCollectiveThe Expositors Collective podcast is part of the GoodLion podcast network, for more thought provoking Christian podcasts visit https://goodlion.io
We strive to be studious at our desks, lucid and clear in our communication and accurate in our exegesis; but without the empowering of the Holy Spirit our messages will be powerless and dry. How much of an emphasis does Calvary Global Network put on eschatology: the area of theology that deals with studying the end times? What is CGN's position on end times theology, and how does the network relate to those who do not hold that position? In this episode, Nick Cady speaks with Brian Brodersen and Kellen Criswell about “Premillenialism," which is one of the theological streams to which CGN belongs. We explain what premillennialism is, and why we hold this view. We also discuss the relationship between Premillenialism and “Dispensationalism” — and explain how this distinction works practically out in our network. Brian Brodersen responds to some questions about his own views on End Times theology, and listen for a clip from Pastor Chuck Smith, sharing his heart on these matters. The recent years have presented new challenges for pastors and leaders, and many studies are showing that discouragement is at an all time high. Even apart the unique events of the past few years, pastoring and leading can be difficult. What is CGN doing as a network to provide care and coaching for pastors and leaders? In this episode, Brian Brodersen, Kellen Criswell, and Nick Cady are joined by Rob Salvato, who leads the Leadership Care and Coaching Team for CGN. In our discussion, Rob shares about the ways their team is developing systems and providing resources to help pastors and leaders in practical ways, including providing resources to help them lead, and providing a lifeline for those who are struggling. Together we share about some of the struggles we've faced as leaders, and how relationships within our network helped us in those times; as well as how we would like to make that experience available to anyone who needs it. What do CGN leaders believe about the charismatic gifts mentioned in the Bible — specifically, the spiritual gifts of prophecy, healing, and speaking in tongues? Are these gifts still in operation? Are they available to Christians today? — And if so, how should they be used practically, in our churches? In this episode of the CGN Mission & Methods podcast, I sit down with Brian Brodersen and Kellen Criswell to discuss on of the theological streams that we belong to as a network, which is: Continuationism. We believe that all the spiritual gifts mentioned in the New Testament are available for believers today. In this episode, we discuss the difference between the terms “Continuationist” and “Charismatic,” and we talk about the biblical reasons why we hold this position, and share some stories as examples of what this can look like in practice. Make sure to listen for a clip from Pastor Chuck Smith, in which he talks about a key passage for this discussion, found in 1 Corinthians 13:8-10. New episodes are being released every two weeks! What do CGN leaders believe about things like Critical Race Theory, or how we should relate to those who identify as LGBTQ? Is talking about “spiritual formation” biblical, or does it open people up to unbiblical influences? In this episode of the CGN Mission & Methods podcast, we answer some questions that you, our listeners, have sent in. I ask Brian Brodersen and Kellen Criswell questions related to some of the most pressing cultural issues of our day, including Critical Race Theory, Social Justice, LGBTQ issues, and more — giving them a chance to respond to your questions and share their thoughts on these matters. Make sure to listen for a clip from Pastor Chuck Smith, in which he gives his take on racial prejudice and even white supremacy in the church. In this episode of the CGN Mission & Methods podcast, we discuss the future of CGN as a network: What initiatives are currently in the works? How does CGN relate to and work with other groups and churches, while still holding fast to our core convictions, values, and beliefs? What will happen to CGN once Brian Brodersen is no longer leading it? Those questions and more are answered in our discussion this week, as Nick Cady sits down with Brian Brodersen and Kellen Criswell to take you behind the scenes, and give you some insight into the heart and vision for CGN - especially moving forward, into the future. Listen for a clip from Pastor Chuck Smith, talking about the need to adjust our message and approach to ministry in an ever-changing culture. In this episode of the CGN Mission & Methods Podcast, we open our Bibles to examine the much-debated topic of the role of women in ministry leadership. As a network, CGN churches are complementarian. In this episode, Nick Cady asks Brian Brodersen and Kellen Criswell to explain the complementarian and egalitarian positions, and why Calvary Global Network is complementarian. Further, they explain what this means for CGN churches, and where there is room for diversity of practice in this area. Listen towards the end of this episode for a clip of Pastor Chuck Smith giving his perspective on this topic, in a recording from 2008. He is the author of several books, including the Preaching the Word commentaries on Isaiah and Proverbs and Marriage and the Mystery of the Gospel. He is also a contributor to the ESV Study Bible. “Jesus, the Champion of grace, has won the battle for you, and He has huge supplies of grace waiting for you.” Hallelujah! Listen in as Stacy talks with author, international speaker, and pastor's wife Cheryl Brodersen about how we can access this abundant grace. Don't miss the encouragement that it's good to come to Jesus empty because what He fills us with is far superior to anything we could have on our own. About our Guest: Cheryl married Brian Brodersen in 1980, and for many years they ministered together at Calvary Chapel Vista, California. In 1996, the Brodersen family moved to London and planted Calvary Chapel Westminster. Brian became the senior pastor of the church in October of 2013. Cheryl currently oversees the Joyful Life women's Bible study at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. She also hosts a weekly podcast called “Women Worth Knowing,” highlighting women from all walks of life, past and present and the lives they led for the Lord and serving others. Cheryl is also a frequent speaker at women's retreats and conferences around the world. She has written several books with Harvest House Publishers. It is her joy and privilege to minister biblical truths to women of all ages. Cheryl & Brian have four grown children, six grandchildren, including five grandsons and one granddaughter and a Golden-doodle named Barnabas. Scripture: Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV) Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom; and the earth did quake and rocks were split, John 1:14 (NKJV) And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Walking in white, marked by love, the Rapture, and the danger of being lukewarm are just a few things Jesus discussed with the early churches of Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. And from these churches we see that Jesus has something to say to us today. In their Conversation Through Revelation chapter three, Brian Brodersen, John Hwang, and Thom Walker encourage us to be overcomers with ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.

What went wrong at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa?
Brian Brodersen is the lead pastor at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. Before becoming a pastor, he worked as a plumber and surf shop employee and still surfs regularly (while the plumbing skills lay more dormant). After hearing the call to pastoring, he served as Pastor of Calvary Chapel Vista in California. He transitioned into the role of Senior Pastor at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa in 2013 after the unfortunate passing of the beloved Pastor Chuck Smith. He is well known for being a phenomenal teacher of the Bible, while also having a huge heart for church planting and discipling the next generation of pastors and ministers to take the Gospel around the world. Pastor Brian has been a tremendous influence on me, and I can't wait for you to hear his heart in this episode! I started my music school with virtually no knowledge of business. Marketing was a mystery that I knew I needed to solve. I was confident in my teaching skills but anything beyond chords, melody, and rhythm was a new, and intimidating, frontier. Music studio owners Cathy Hallessey and Brian Brodersen started their music studio, U-Rock Music School, with a background in marketing that allowed them to enter the market with a clear and attractive offer. In this episode, Brian and Cathy share some amazing insights into how you can improve your messaging and writing skills. At the end of the day, words motivate customers to take action. Pastor Rob Dingman (Twickenham, UK) speaks with Mike about the dangers of convoluting simple passages with unnecessary complications and obscure details. Time is precious, so may we use it wisely!Rob Dingman was born and raised in Seattle, USA. He has been serving Jesus Christ since 1974. He planted Calvary Chapel Twickenham in 2001.Although exposed to Christianity from an early age, he found it frustrating. It seemed futile to go to church but not actually know God.His connection with Jesus Christ became concrete when he heard the Bible taught chapter-by- chapter, verse-by-verse. Knowing God through what the Bible says became the focus of his life. Inspired by the example of his pastor, Wayne Taylor, Rob began reading, studying, and meditating in his Bible. He travelled as a guitarist with the Robert Case Band across the US, the Far East, and Western Europe. He and his wife moved to Germany to help plant Calvary Chapel Siegen in 1990. They moved to England in 1997 to help plant Calvary Chapel Westminster with Brian Brodersen. Along with planting Calvary Chapel Twickenham Rob has helped plant churches in Russia, Germany, and UK.He is married to Joanie, their daughters are Holly and Katie. An important Bible verse for him is Romans 12:2“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”Expositors Collective is part of the GoodLion podcast network

“In this episode Brian Brodersen and Kellen Criswell discuss the past and present of Calvary Chapel on formal ministry training and education. Important questions tackled in their conversation include: - Why has Calvary Chapel often been labeled ‘Anti-intellectual'? - Why are many Calvary Chapel leaders today experiencing new openness to using theological seminaries for part of their ministry preparation? - Why are the flagship Calvary Chapel Bible Colleges in Europe and North America pursuing formal accreditation? - What do these changes mean (and not mean) regarding Calvary Chapel's historic commitment to the idea that formal education is not a necessary prerequisite for serving in ministry leadership?”
