Dead Man Walking - Week 2 - " I No Longer Live Is Really Living" - Josh Amstutz
What good is your faith if it sits on the bench instead of stepping into the game? James warns us today that true faith doesn't stay idle. It moves, takes action, and meets the needs of those around us. Faith that doesn't act is dead—lifeless, useless, and disconnected from God's purpose. So, is your faith alive and thriving? Or does your faith need a resurrection? Welcome to the Daily Devo. Our text today is James 2:14-17. What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. — James 2:14-17 To be clear, James isn't suggesting that works save us. Salvation is by faith alone, through the finished work of Christ on the Cross. What James is saying is this: true, saving faith produces visible evidence. A faith that doesn't show itself in action is not alive—it's counterfeit. James' message cuts straight to the heart of Christian apathy. If we claim to follow Christ, we can't just say it; we must show it. If I believe in a God who loves, then my life must overflow with love. If I trust a God who provides, my actions should reflect generosity. And if I know a God who forgives, then I must extend forgiveness and mercy to others. Faith that works isn't optional—it's essential. James paints a vivid picture: if you see someone shivering in the cold and starving and all you offer are empty words, “You've got this!” you're missing the point entirely. They don't “got this.” They're cold. They're hungry. Real faith doesn't drive by; it stops, steps in, and meets the need. Here's the hard truth: selfishness and a desire for convenience lie at the root of dead faith. We avoid helping because it disrupts our plans, our comfort, or our resources. But a living faith embraces the inconvenience because it reflects the sacrificial love of Christ. Faith that works, works. This year, don't just proclaim your faith—live it. God didn't just say He loved us; He demonstrated it by sending Jesus to die for our sins. Jesus' sacrifice is the ultimate act of faith in action. If you've experienced His love, let it move you to love, serve, and act in ways that reflect Him. Take a moment to examine your heart. Is your faith alive and active, or does it need a resurrection? Confess where you've fallen short and ask God to breathe life into your faith so it overflows into your actions. Lord, I confess that my faith has been stagnant in too many areas of my life. Thank You for showing me mercy through Jesus. Help me to live out my faith by meeting the needs of those around me and showing Your love through my actions. Amen. If you're ready to get off the bench and into the game, write “I'm in the game” in the comments below. Let's live a faith that moves, reflecting the God who moved heaven and earth to save us. Join me tomorrow as we continue our study through James! ASK THIS: How does your daily life show evidence of your faith? When have you chosen convenience over meeting someone's need? What steps can you take to make your faith more active? Does your faith reflect the sacrificial love of Christ?

Most of us are following life's default script -- wake, eat, work, sleep, repeat. But is this working? We receive lots of advice (upadesha) from those we respect on how to be great, but are we actually following? The greatest revelations (mahavakya) of visionaries are accessible to us, but do we trust in them? There are so many opportunities for receiving inspiration (shravana), for reflection (manana) to have faith in those teachings, and for contemplation (nidhidhyasana) to allow those ideas to soak into who we are -- do we take advantage of them? So really, are we alive, or are we living? On this season of Live Vedanta, entitled Stairway to Serenity, we'll be exploring 100 words at the heart of our self-development. The more we understand these words, the more we can live by them. Want to catch up? Maybe Easy Isn't Really Living? Sponsored by New Leaf Hyperbaric's & Massage & CrisDental Family Dentistry I wake to 15 degree's. It's my running day but consider for a moment changing that to a gym day. I know how running makes me feel. Yes, it hurts and today my knee is bugging me a bit. Last year it was so cold and windy and snowy I didn't get to run outside and my mental health arose from the dark. So I decide to grab the hand warmers, a stocking cap and layers and layers of running clothes and hit the path. I run a 7 mile stretch around a pond that in parts, borders Canyon Ferry Lake. I love it here. I rarely see another human but witness wildness in its purest form. Today I'm listening to a podcast with David Goggins and Andrew Huberman. They are talking about living strong, living hard and living long. I'm captivated by the topic because it's real life, it's my life, it's your life. I wrote something this same morning that lines up perfectly with what they are saying. If you want a great life, not just a good life, it means hardship, hard work and hard knocks. Most people don't want to put out the effort to have that. I'm not sure, up to this point, that I would either. I'm fortunate, I started doing this long ago and God is good to me. He shows me the depths of despair but only as much as I can handle. However I will say he pushes me. What if you and me are stronger than we think? What if the amazing life we want is not found in a promotion, more views or measured by vacations and comfort? It's hard because I don't want to ask for more pain but I don't want to go to my grave thinking I missed out of something either. I pick up a little book I try to read each morning and see where Jacob was taking his people through the wilderness and would measure how far he would push them in the desert by this standard. He said: “I will lead on softly, according to the cattle that goeth before me and the children.” I think God is like that too. He only gives us what we can handle but many of us could handle much more if we'd only allow ourselves to have those hard, difficult conversations with ourselves. I finished my run, knee's felt fine and my soul was full. God lead us softly according to what you know we can take but don't allow us an easy way out. I want to live a full life, but only if you are in control.

In the nearly two years since the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, a common criticism of Russians by outside observers has been that they largely continue to live their lives as if nothing serious is happening. In this episode, we take a closer look at how Russians are living amid the war. We speak with residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg who share how their lives have been changed by the war. We later hear from leading sociologist Denis Volkov about how the behavior of Russian society is unique against the backdrop of the war and what trends have emerged in different regions of the country. The Moscow Times recently published a report on the Muscovites who party hard as a form of escapism from the war. For this episode, we asked the report's author if she was shocked by such behavior when she returned to the Russian capital after several months abroad. Whether you're working on developing more self-love, honouring your boundaries, deepening authenticity in your relationships, raising your confidence, or growing your business, there's always a sense of momentum and success... And then the fear that "the other shoe's going to drop". Do you relate to this? You CAN PREVENT energy leaks so that momentum is KEPT, without getting sucked in by other people's drama. Aug 13, 2020 #SRFConvocation #Yogananda #ChildOfGod “Who am I?” “Where am I headed?” “Is God hiding from me, or am I hiding from Him?” Such questions have a way of showing up repeatedly in the spiritual journey. As part of the Day 4 (Wednesday) schedule of the 2020 SRF World Convocation, SRF monk Brother Govindananda will give a class about how in the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda, we find not just theories and speculative answers to these questions but living truths that enable us to get answers from within. The journey starts by changing how you think of yourself: Do not start it from where maya wants you to think you are — a limited human being. Start from the truth: You are a child of God. This class will explore how to cultivate the understanding and attunement that reveals that you are a spark of the Infinite — a soul — moving rapidly toward the realization of your oneness with God. The 2020 Self-Realization Fellowship World Convocation is a week of free online classes, meditations, virtual pilgrimages to ashram centers where Yogananda lived, kirtans (devotional chanting), and more—offering all seekers of higher consciousness and balanced spiritual living a unique experience of peace and joy. This year SRF is honoring the 100th anniversary of Yogananda's arrival in the West and the beginning of his worldwide work. Paramahansa Yogananda viewed the Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons as the very core of the teachings he was ordained to bring to the world as a special spiritual dispensation for the coming global civilization. To learn more and apply for the SRF Lessons: https://yogananda.org/lessons In this class, Brother Govindananda refers to two other books by Paramahansa Yogananda and one by Yogananda's guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar: To read “God Talks With Arjuna,” Yogananda's translation of and commentaries on the Bhagavad Gita: https://bookstore.yogananda-srf.org/p... Forget a mandatory 5 a.m. wake-up. Forget outlining your life plan in six-month, one-year, and five-year spans. We're living in a cultural shift as we reframe our perspectives around the purpose of work, what work/life balance really means, and how we want to spend our time on this planet. We move through our day attempting to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible. When asked how we are, we give a brief "fine" and proceed with our day figuring that the person asking wouldn't really want to know anyway. But what if we stopped ourselves and truthfully answered the question? What truths might we uncover? In her debut book, HOW ARE YOU, REALLY?, Jenna Kutcher takes everything she's learned to demystify for readers the steps to take to create their own truly fulfilled lives. It all starts with asking that simple question, and finally getting to an answer. Divided into three sections, HOW ARE YOU, REALLY? is a guide to creating a life that focuses on soaking up the richness of our experiences to make room for more actual living.
