Listening to a live big band is a thrilling experience. Back in the 1930's and 40's before the advent of television, people were often able to hear their favorite bands playing on the radio. Many of these performances were recorded and I am fortunate to have several in my collection. Our first and third remote today is from the Victory Parade of Spotllight Bands program. From that series I have performances by Gene Krupa and Charlie Spivak. To separate them I have a remote by the Glenn Miller orchestra from 1939. I hope you enjoy the sounds of the big bands performing live on the radio. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Pretty Perky Peggy King", as she was called, appeared on The George Gobel Show from 1954 through 1957 and guest-starred on many other TV shows. Mitch Miller signed her to a long-term contract with Columbia Records, under which she made two best-selling albums, Wish Upon on a Star and Girl Meets Boy and a string of hit singles, including "Make Yourself Comfortable" in 1954. She sang the Oscar-nominated song "Count Your Blessings" on the 1955 Academy Awards telecast, and both Billboard and Down Beat magazine named her Best New Singer of 1955–56.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. In 1941, the Mutual Radio Network had the idea of broadcasting Swing Bands remotely from various halls around the country. Coca Cola was sold on the idea, and the first edition of Spotlight Bands was broadcast just days before Pearl Harbor. Patriotism is front and center and the music is hot! And it was on Spotlight Bands/Victory Parade. Benny Goodman, Charlie Barnet, Les Brown, Ted Fio Rito, Jack Teagarden, Louis Armstrong and many others lent their talents to the program. On today's show we present three band remotes: Les Brown, Gene Krupa, and Charlie Spivak. Note that on the Les Brown remote Doris Day is the vocalist. I hope you enjoy the music from the war years as we celebrate Memorial Day 2019. Thank you for listening. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

Some of the artists we'll be hearing from today are Bing Crosby, Tommy Dorsey, Kay Kyser, Nat King Cole, Freddy Martin, Jimmy Dorsey, and Charlie Spivak. These were the songs that our men in the service were listening to as they headed into battle. World War 2 changed the big bands. During this time there were recording bans and out of this the vocalists became very popular. Also, because of gas rationing the bands didn't get to tour as much. I hope you enjoy the selections on the show from the years of 1940 to 1945. Thank you for listening. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

This week's show is a belated birthday salute to a great trumpeter and bandleader, Charlie Spivak. Charlie was an exceptional trumpet player who, despite having been around jazz musicians all his life, rarely improvised. I recorded a show on the Spivak Orchestra several years ago and decided a few weeks ago to revisit his band. He was a member of several top name big bands before launching one of his one. Glenn Miller was one of his backers. We will be listening to some of the early original recordings that feature Charlie's wife, vocalist Irene Daye. These are some great sides by a Big band leader and a trumpet master. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

The Jam Session with special guest Bob Mover was recorded January 26, 2014 at Bay Burger restaurant in Sag Harbor New York. Bob (Robert) Mover (born March 22, 1952, Boston, Massachusetts) is an alto, tenor and soprano jazz saxophonist and a vocalist. His father was a musician who played professionally including stints with the Charlie Spivak orchestra. He started playing the alto saxophone at age 13, studied with Phil Woods at a summer music camp, and took private lessons with Ira Sullivan. Mover has an explosive sound and style on the sax, directly influenced by Charlie Parker, Lee Konitz, Ira Sullivan, Stan Getz, and Sonny Rollins. His improvisations are melodically based, with lyrical melodies interspersed with complex bebop type lines. His selection of repertoire is wide and varied, with an encyclopedic knowledge of both standard and unconventional broadway and movie musical tunes. He was joined by Bill Smith on Piano, Peter Martin Weiss on Upright Bass and Don Moffit on Drums.

Miller played and recorded with the likes of Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey (who on several of their records, featured an up-and-coming singer by the name of Bing Crosby), Gene Krupa, Eddie Condon and Coleman Hawkins. In addition, during that time, Glenn cut 18 sides for Goodman, and also worked for radio studio conductors like Victor Young, Carl Fenton and Jacques Renard. In 1934, Miller became the musical director of the Dorsey Band, and later went on to organize The Ray Noble Orchestra, which included such players as Charlie Spivak, Peewee Erwin, Bud Freeman, Johnny Mince, George Van Eps and Delmar Kaplan, among others. the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band engaged in over 800 performances. Of these, 500 were broadcasts heard by millions. There were more than 300 personal appearances including concerts and dances, with a gross attendance of over 600,000. But Glenn was not to participate in the final six months of these activities. In the Fall of 1944, the band was scheduled to be sent on a six-week tour of Europe and would be stationed in Paris during that time. Miller decided to go ahead, in order to make the proper arrangements for the group's arrival. And so, on December 15th, Glenn Miller boarded a transport plane to Paris, never to be seen again.
