In 1870, a strange fruit arrived on the docks in New Jersey, starting an industry that would change the world. That fruit was a banana, and, although it was a staple food in tropical regions, most Americans had never tried one. Today, a century and a half later, even the most depressing gas station, corner store, or hotel breakfast buffet in the land has bananas on offer. This week, we're exploring the story of how humans transformed a tiny berry full of tooth-breaking seeds into the soft, yellow, suggestively-shaped fruits we know and love. Listen in now for the funny but tragic story that involves the invention of the cruise ship vacation, a Brazilian beauty and her iconic tutti-frutti hat, and the creation of the first "banana republic." As someone who entered the venture industry in the wake of the Dot-com crash, I have a deep appreciation for new managers, their entry point into the industry, and how that shapes their world view. For me, it was pure carnage for the first few years of “investing”. I put that in quotes because it was mostly triaging the portfolio and trying to assess which companies were worth saving and which were destined for the Dot-com dust bin. Shortly after stepping out on my own to start OATV, another bubble burst with the Global Financial Crisis™. My trips to NYC for board meetings were often capped off with midnight strolls through Zuccatti Park to witness the occupation of Occupy Wall Street. The markets were in free fall, checkbooks closed, and founders, once again, were at the mercy of the market. But easy times never make for strong people and that's why I was excited to sit down with Turner Novak when we both found ourselves in Columbia, MO for the Main Street Summit a few weeks back. His is a “chronically online” story of discovery and persistence into the world of startups and VCs. Through the use of memes, social networks, and data, Turner was able to build an audience and a “fantasy portfolio” to land himself an internship and, eventually, a fund of his own. Turner came into his own as an investor in the frothy times of the not-too-distant past. With wide eyes and fresh funds to deploy at his newly formed firm, Banana Capital, he set to work deploying near the peak of the ZIRP bubble. I thought it would be fun to unpack the experience of someone who built their brand online, from the midwest, and began deploying into a market that's rules and dynamics quickly changed on them. With that as the goal, this one did not disappoint. A few takeaways: - Turner's exposure to entrepreneurship began early with his mother running a small wedding gown business. Turner developed an interest in technology and the internet during his teenage years, teaching himself programming.- Turner's path into venture capital began in college, where he joined the investment club and got hooked on investing. After working in commercial lending and for a nonprofit endowment, he started building a “fantasy VC portfolio” on Twitter, which helped him break into the industry. His visibility on social media eventually led to his first job in venture capital.- Turner's largest learning from the last few years in venture is the importance of entry points — getting in at the right valuation can make or break an investment. While many aspects of startups are unpredictable, controlling the price you pay is crucial for long-term success. This was a really fun one and I think Turner has a bright future ahead of him as an investor and fund builder. The easy times may be over, but I can see his strength already showing through as he navigates this new reality. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording it. PS - Today is my birthday and all I want is for you to A) subscribe to the INDIE YouTube channel (just hit that subscribe button) and B) send the next category defining company our way. Is that too much to ask?!?

A killer fungus is ravaging plantations of the Cavendish banana worldwide. It travels through the soil at lightning speed and chokes the banana plant so its leaves shrivel up and die. The disease is known as Tropical Race 4, or TR4 for short, and it has spread across the globe from Australia, to the Philippines, Pakistan and Mozambique. Now TR4 is widespread across Latin America. In Colombia where 30,000 people are employed in banana plantations, the government declared a state of national emergency when the fungus first arrived on farms in 2019. An international community of scientists is experimenting with different techniques to try to halt the spread of TR4 whether that's through gene-editing, selective breeding or injecting microbes into the soil.

Embarrassing confession: I didn't know who the Savannah Bananas were before moving to Savannah Georgia. (I know, right?!) But if you really know me, you'll understand why I am now a HUGE Savannah Bananas fan -- because it's not just baseball for them. It never has been, since the very beginning! If you know The Savannah Bananas, you know. But if you DON'T know them, well then get cozy because you're about to hear their entire start-up story from today's guest. Today's guest, Kelsey Orton and her husband Jared (President of the Bananas) were college sweethearts that took a crazy leap of faith as boyfriend + girlfriend, fiances, and then newlyweds when they decided to chase a dream together. In 2016, they helped in the startup of what was a brand new baseball team in Savannah Georgia. You could say the entire thing was bananas! Kelsey is also a business owner herself, as a luxury interior designer + the owner/founder of Tennyson Studio here in Savannah. Kelsey is a wife, mom, + a follower of Christ. Her story today is one you don't want to miss!  In this episode you'll hear: They story of Kelsey, Jared, + the entire Banana team's humble beginnings. Kelsey's advice for dating + chasing dreams as a couple with Christ at the center of it all. How to hold being a mom + chasing dreams at the same time -- including if being a mom IS the dream (the most divine calling, IMO!) Why + how you need to trust God through all of life's ups + downs: career decisions as a college grad, dating, marriage, startup cultures, toxic work enviornments, becoming parents + more. Break 1: GCPS   STORY 1: Woman Dies In Lawrenceville House Fire A tragic house fire in Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County claimed the life of a woman on Saturday. Firefighters responded to the blaze at 100 Mae Belle Way after receiving a 911 call reporting the fire and a woman in a wheelchair inside. Despite firefighters' efforts, they discovered the woman deceased on the main level of the home. The victim's stepson informed them that his stepmother was bedridden and unable to escape independently. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. STORY 2: Former Wesleyan Pitcher is Going Bananas for Baseball Career in Savannah Former Wesleyan pitcher Andy Archer, hailing from Peachtree Corners, has signed with the Savannah Bananas for their barnstorming 2024 season, known for their unique Banana Ball games. Archer, a Georgia Tech and University of Hawaii alum, earned a master's degree in finance before pursuing a baseball career. Despite a recent shoulder surgery, he impressed the Bananas' coaching staff with a quirky audition, securing the last spot on the roster. Banana Ball, distinctive for its entertaining rules, offers a fresh and enjoyable baseball experience for fans. Archer anticipates a unique homecoming when the Bananas play in Lawrenceville on March 22-24. STORY 3: Martin Luther King Jr. Parade Reminds Gwinnettians To Carry On Civil Rights Leader's Work The United Ebony Society of Gwinnett County organized the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in downtown Lawrenceville, commemorating King's legacy and emphasizing the unfinished work for civil rights. Participants included marching bands, scout troops, churches, advocacy groups, and political figures. President Zachary Pratt urged Gwinnettians to carry forward King's message of love and equality. The theme, "It Starts With Me," emphasized individual responsibility. Gwinnett County Public Schools Superintendent Calvin Watts, the grand marshal, highlighted the journey toward equity, unity, and justice. Gwinnett County Sheriff Keybo Taylor noted persistent inequities, while Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson stressed "Kingian nonviolence." The parade concluded with a celebration at Central Gwinnett High School.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: TOM WAGES – MOG – INGLES 6   STORY 4: Study says air pollution can make people lazy A study by the University of Leicester has found that long-term exposure to current levels of air pollution in the UK can lead to an additional 22 minutes per day of sedentary behavior. Sedentary behavior includes time spent lying, reclining, sitting, or standing still. The research involved 644 people at risk of type 2 diabetes who wore accelerometers around their waists for seven consecutive days. The study suggests that high levels of exposure to nitrogen dioxide were associated with increased sedentary time, emphasizing the need to reduce air pollution for public health benefits. STORY 5: King's granddaughter calls for goodwill among Georgians in celebration of civil rights icon During the annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday at the state Capitol, Yolanda Renee King, the civil rights icon's granddaughter, delivered a message of inspiration for Georgians. She emphasized Georgia's role in setting an example for the country in fighting for justice and equality. King encouraged residents to honor King's legacy through community service during the holiday weekend. The event also acknowledged the recent death of Christine King Farris, King's eldest sibling and a civil rights leader, who received tribute in Georgia's Capitol Rotunda. The ceremony included awards named after individuals who worked closely with King during the Civil Rights Era.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3:  ESOG – DTL   STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on celiacs disease.   STORY 7: LEAH MCGRATH ***LEAH MCGRATH INERVIEW***   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: JACKSON – Henssler 60   Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast.
