Can you believe it's our second anniversary episode? And our fiftieth? We're celebrating both, and we have a very special guest who makes an appearance. We're discussing our namesake movie, TapeHeads, a fairly obscure 1988 cult classic film starring John Cusack and Tim Robbins as two guys who want to get into the business of making rock music videos. It also stars Sam Moore and Junior Walker as their musical idols the Swanky Modes. The soundtrack is fantastic (Todd owns it on vinyl, CD, and cassette), and the score is by Fishbone, who appear in a scene as a country band. Comparatively few people have seen this underdog of a movie, and we're thrilled to be able to share it with you. Am I crying? Well, it wouldn't surprise me if I was. Let's get into trouble, baby! (TapeHeads fact checker here: Bird is the movie about Charlie Park, obviously. The Dexter Gordon movie is 'Round Midnight.) Rays Jazz ShopRays Jazz shop was originally Collets Jazz and Folk Records " The shop moved to Shaftesbury Ave in 1974 and the following year Ray came to an agreement with Chris Barber to store and sell a vast number of mint condition 78s which Chris had picked up from a warehouse in New Jersey. They were on the Savoy, DeeGee and Bop labels, still boxed in original packaging from the late 40s, by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Stitt, Wardell Gray & others. The publicity raised the profile of the shop, television and radio publicity followed, and Peter Clayton interviewed Ray, with Matthew Wright, for a broadcast on the BBC World Service,In 1983, Collets wanted to move the record shop but the jazz staff – Ray, Matthew and Bob Glass - had no interest in going. Ray decided that as it had been his life for nearly thirty years, he had most to lose and was more committed to it, so he bought the lease from Collets. They closed for a few days, pulled down a wall, repositioned the counter and reopened it as Ray's Jazz Shop, ready for trading. Ray's wife, Wendy, a professional illustrator, designed the cat logo for the shop. It quickly established itself and live music sessions were held there. It was a meeting place for musicians and legendary hipster Slim Gaillard became a regular. In 2002, spiralling costs and ill health forced him to give up the lease, but thanks to the endeavours of Paul Pace, the name lives on at Foyle's in the Charing Cross Road and in the words of Georgie Fame's song “Vinyl”.In his final years he only occasionally moved out of his home area of Camden, but could be seen from time to time at gigs, usually accompanied by close friend and musician Paul Shearsmith. Jazz saxophonist Joe Henderson was born on April 25, 1937 in Ohio. Following his stint in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962, Henderson made his way to New York City, where he crossed paths with fellow saxophonist Dexter Gordon. Joining Gordon's band proved pivotal for Henderson's career, exposing him to diverse musical influences including bebop, R&B, and Latin styles. Henderson's breakthrough arrived with a standout solo on Horace Silver's popular track, "Song for My Father." This led to a deal with Blue Note Records, featuring a remarkable 30 albums from 1963 to 1968.  Throughout his career, Henderson collaborated with jazz luminaries such as Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, as well as the rock ensemble Blood, Sweat & Tears.  In 2001, Henderson died at 64 years old. Rarified Heir Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2024 90:28

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Ed Eckstine, son of singer Billy Eckstine and actress/model Carolle Drake. Our conversation with Ed was fun, fascinating, edifying and above all, full of stories of his life as the child of a celebrity but also his own career in the music industry. Our only regret was not keeping Ed for another 90 minutes because he has stories for days. We barely scratched the surface. Part two is a must. Many of us only know Billy Eckstine as a jazz & pop singer whose baritone voice and smooth delivery made him one of the most in-demand singers from the 1930s well into the 1950s. But he also was a guitar player, trumpet player and this Billy Eckstine & his Orchestra was the first Bebop Big Band and his players and vocalists were a who's who of Jazz -  Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis, Art Blakey,  Sarah Vaughan, Pearl Bailey, and Lena Horne all were part of the band in the 1950s. By 1950, his popularity rivaled Sinatra - which as you will hear wasn't a rivalry at all between these two friends. It was Eckstine's talent as well as his good looks and dapper attire that made him perhaps the first black entertainer to become a crossover star in the segregated 1950s America. But as we learn from our conversation with Ed, one photo in a major American magazine essentially put an end to all that in the must ugly and vile way possible. But to hear Ed tell it, this terrible incident was a blessing in disguise as it opened up doors for him outside America and made him an international star, touring well into the 1980s in Europe, Australia and Japan. Our conversation with Ed also focused on his own career in the music industry that took him from journalist to publicist to head of Quincy Jones Qwest Productions to stints at Polygram,  Arista and as the President of Mercury Records. As Nabil Ayers in the New York Times said, “Eckstine's story is unique because he was the first black person to be let in — to be allowed by the predominantly white music industry to helm one of its largest entities.” This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story. Ed Eckstine's is like none other.

Tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon was one of the most quintessential performers on that instrument for over 40 years. Born in Los Angeles on February 27, 1923, he was initially heavily influenced by Lester Young, but soon developed his own bebop vocabulary and a room filling sound befitting his 6'6” frame, his playing heavily influenced Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. He was one of a number of American jazz musicians to become an expatriate, spending 14 years in Copenhagen and Paris. His bravura performance in the film Round Midnight earned him a best actor nomination, in 1986. On Sunday, the Jazz Evensong Quintet will perform a selection of his compositions from his over 90 recordings as a leader.

Burning Ambulance Podcast

Rufus Reid is an extremely important but under-recognized figure in modern jazz. He's always been someone who's had one foot in the mainstream and one in the avant-garde — he did a lot of work with soul jazz and jazz-funk saxophonist Eddie Harris in the early 1970s, before joining Dexter Gordon's band when Gordon made his famous US comeback after years in Europe. He was also part of Andrew Hill's band in the late '80s, and has done a ton of straightahead records. But he was also a member of Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition in the early '80s, and he was one of the four bassists on Henry Threadgill's X-75 album, and he played on Muhal Richard Abrams' Things To Come From Those Now Gone, and he played with Anthony Braxton on the two Seven Standards 1985 albums with Hank Jones on piano and Victor Lewis on drums. He was also a member of the World Bass Violin Ensemble, which was a group of six bassists that made an album for Black Saint in 1984. Reid has also done a lot of work as a leader. He's made a string of albums in collaboration with drummer Akira Tana and various other musicians; he's done bass duo albums with Michael Moore; and he's led the Out Front trio with pianist Steve Allee and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca. In 2014, he released Quiet Pride: the Elizabeth Catlett Project, an album that featured a total of 19 instrumentalists and a singer all paying tribute to a sculptor whose work focused on the Black female experience in America. Reid is also an educator and the author of The Evolving Bassist, a book originally published in 1974 that's still a standard text for bassists. In this interview, we talk about Reid's work with Eddie Harris, with Dexter Gordon, with Henry Threadgill, and with his own ensembles. We talk about a six-CD set he made with Frank Kimbrough a few years ago, recording all of Thelonious Monk's compositions. We talk about his approach to the instrument, his influences, and about his new album, which is a duo collaboration with pianist Sullivan Fortner. This was a really enjoyable and informative conversation, and I think you'll come away from it with a new or perhaps a renewed appreciation for someone who's been a major figure in jazz for 50 years and isn't stopping yet.

It's time to discover, learn, and play Jazz Piano with special guest Paul Croteau.Paul grew up in Bloomfield, CT. His father was a passionate jazz fan with a modest but finely refined record collection, immersing him in the sounds of Dexter Gordon, Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Phil Woods, Jack McDuff, and many other jazz greats. He took up the saxophone at the age of 10, then taught himself piano during high school. He studied classical saxophone with Philip Delibero, earned All-State and All-New England recognition, along with several jazz soloist awards during competitions at Berklee in Boston. He then attended the renowned music school at North Texas where he studied with Jim Riggs. Paul played lead alto in the 1988 Disneyland All-American College Band in Anaheim, and won first place in the 1989 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Competition in Washington DC. Upon graduation Paul traveled the world as a freelance musician for many years playing in a variety of genres from classic jazz and shows to R&B and smooth jazz. Later in life after building a family with his North Texas college sweetheart, Paul shifted his focus to composing music for television and film, forming Yo Paulie Music (YPM) in 2015 out of his home studio in San Antonio, TX. Ep.124 Mastering Vocal Style Licks Riffs And Runs With Jono McNeil

BAST Training podcast

Jono McNeil returns from our last episode, joining Alexa to discuss licks, riffs, runs, and how to master that vocal style. Jono has served as Head of Vocals at the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM), designing degree vocal curriculum content. He's also an external examiner for institutions like Leeds Conservatoire, combining his passion for popular music and artistry with innovative research. With academic qualifications including a Jazz degree and a Voice Pedagogy master's, he's dedicated to realising the potential of popular music. KEY TAKEAWAYS According to Jono, ornamentation serves as a delightful artistic tool, reminiscent of classical music's intricacies. He suggests that ornamentation, encompassing turns, formants, borders, trills, and more, adds a layer of decoration to the vocal performance. This not only enhances the musical experience but also enables singers to infuse their personal touch into each phrase. Jono's believes that exploring various onsets, from the breathy and balanced to the glottal, shapes the vocal narrative in profound ways. By employing these diverse onsets within a single phrase, singers can achieve a rich dynamic palette that captivates the audience's attention, offering a distinctive auditory journey. Dynamics aren't merely about loudness but encompass shading and texture. These nuanced shifts in volume and intensity create a vivid musical landscape, effectively evoking emotions and intensifying the listeners' engagement. From Jono's perspective, vocal embellishments like licks, runs, and riffs are essential tools for expressing agility and technical prowess. He believes these techniques add an exciting layer of creativity and individuality to a performance. Jono encourages singers to incorporate these elements organically, allowing their vocal expression to flourish while captivating their audience with the art of improvisation. Jono's approach emphasises the fusion of technique and musicality. He believes that true mastery of style involves knowing when to apply specific techniques, a skill that comes from musical wisdom. For Jono, style is not just about adding ornamentation or variations; it's about weaving a tapestry of musicality that resonates deeply with listeners, turning each performance into a unique artistic statement. Smooth Singing and Ornaments: When discussing terms like licks, riffs, and runs, we're talking about singing agilely across notes with smooth, connected execution. For instance, "lick" might refer to a melodic ornament, while "riff" could mean a repeating motif in pop. The goal is to master these elements to create engaging performances. Different Runs and Combinations: Vocal stylization involves various runs. Some are single-note embellishments, while others are combination runs with distinct sections. Learning and combining these parts enhances vocal skills. Breaking down complexity into manageable portions contributes to dynamic performances. Technique and Artistic Expression: Achieving vocal stylisation balances technique and creativity. Mastering techniques like maintaining jaw looseness, proper airflow, and posture enhances licks, runs, and riffs. These elements become easier with a strong technical base. Combining technique and creativity leads to captivating performances. Enhancing vocal agility begins with dissecting licks, riffs, and runs. Natalie Weiss's approach of breaking them down simplifies understanding, making it accessible for all skill levels. Slow, methodical practice is foundational; starting with a deliberate pace establishes precision and awareness of physical sensations. Gradually increasing tempo with a metronome builds discipline and muscle memory, leading to mastery. Achieving vocal agility requires steady, patient progress. Recognizing individual differences is crucial. The metaphor of the hare and tortoise holds true; steady, consistent practice leads to substantial growth in the industry. While some may advance quickly, embracing a patient mindset fosters sustainable improvement. Building a foundation and gradually progressing towards ambitious goals forms the essence of the journey towards vocal agility. BEST MOMENTS ‘Style gives you a discernible sound, making your performance stand out'‘Dynamics are about shading, texture, creating a sonic landscape'‘True style mastery is knowing what to include and exclude, weaving musicality into a unique performance'‘At the core of mastering vocal style lies a focus on foundational elements'‘Get those licks on clicks, use a metronome' EPISODE RESOURCES Website: www.jonomcneiled.com Social Media:  Instagram: @jonomcneil Relevant Links & Mentions:  Artists mentioned: Miles Davis; Lester Young; Dexter Gordon; John Coltrane; Karen Carpenter; Whitney Houston; David Bowie; Doja Cat; PinkPantheress; Bella; No Guidance; Scissor; Lalah Hathaway; Yebba Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 123 Insights into TV Vocal Coaching with The Masked Singer's Jono McNeil  Youtube - Natalie Weiss' Breaking Down the Riffs: https://www.youtube.com/@NatalieWeissOfficial ABOUT THE GUEST Jono McNeil has provided vocal coaching, arranging and production for pop artists, groups and vocalists in a range of influential positions within the UK music and entertainment industries for over 15 years.  He works as a vocal coach across a variety of TV shows including The Voice UK, The Voice Kids, The Masked Singer, Little Mix, The Search, Wedding Day Winners and Change Your Tune.  He also does coaching and vocal arrangement for touring acts such as JLS, New Rules, Needanamebro and July Jones to name a few.  An artist and singer in his own right, Jono has performed with Michael Buble, Paloma Faith, Josh Groban, Nelly, Jamie Cullum, Philip Selway (Radiohead), Lemar, George Ezra and Jocelyn Brown, with also several original albums available on streaming platforms. Rufus Reid With an incredible resume as a sideman, bandleader, and educator, bassist Rufus Reid represents one of the most significant links to the great jazz tradition. His remarkable accomplishments have not gone unnoticed, and Reid has worked and recorded with legends like Eddie Harris, Dexter Gordon, Andrew Hill, The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Quartet, Kenny Barron, Stan Getz, J.J. Johnson, Jack DeJohnette, and many others.  In fact, he has recorded on over 500 albums. His reputation as an educator is equal to that of his musical achievements.  His book The Evolving Bassist (Myriad Limited, 1974) remains the industry standard for double bass methodology.  Reid and Dr. Martin Krivin created the Jazz Studies and Performance Bachelor of Music Program at William Paterson University.  This program offered the first professional academically accredited Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies in the NY, NJ, and CT tri-state areas. On November 19, 2022, Mr. Reid was honored as part of the Giants of Jazz Series at the South Orange Performing Arts Center in New Jersey. Before the celebration, I was asked to interview the bassist for New Jersey Jazz Magazine, and here is that interview. Pat Irwin is a renowned film and television composer; some of his scores include Dexter: New Blood, Rocko's Modern Life, Pepper Ann, and Nurse Jackie. He's also a multi-instrumentalist who was a member of the B52s for 18 years; he founded The Raybeats and 8 Eyed Spy, and more recently the band SUSS of which I'm a fan. Pat also teaches film composition at NYU, and Brooklyn College at the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema, and this conversation wove it's way into important topics for all of us: a life well-lived, grief, the importance of creativity and of having a good hang. As always, I've included detailed timestamps, so if you want to jump to his days with the B52s or Dexter, go ahead, but I hope you'll take the time to listen to this whole episode which is rich with music and stories. An extraordinary number of the greatest jazz musicians were deeply involved in psychoactive drug use – to the extent that the history of jazz and the history of drugs during the middle third of the 20th century are inseparable. The King of Jazz, Louis Armstrong, never went a day without marijuana. The great “Lady Day,” Billie Holiday, became during the 1950s “the most famous drug addict in America.” Most of the great saxophonists – Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Art Pepper, Gerry Mulligan, Dexter Gordon and many more – used heroin as well as other drugs. Martin Torgoff, author of Bop Apocalypse, has probably thought about this subject more deeply than anyone else. Why did so many jazz musicians use heroin and other drugs? How did it impact the music they made and the lives they led? What role did racism and the nascent war on drugs play in all this? And what's the connection with famous Beat writers like Jack Kerouac and the poet Allen Ginsberg?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
